Winston Churchill once called the oldSoviet Union ‘a riddle, wrapped in amystery, inside an enigma’; and muchthe same could be said for author ‘BTraven’ - a pen name adopted by . . . ?There is speculation as to what his realname may have been, but that’s it. All ofhis novels were first published in German, but he claimed that they’d all been writtenin English. The only real consensusabout him is that he lived much of hislife in Mexico; and the publication of‘Treasure of Sierra Madre’ in 1927marks him as a keen observer of life ina country recovering from political chaoswhile in the midst of a boom in mineralextraction. Political chaos and mineralwealth! What an opportunity, if you lacka conscience; and as Dobbs (one ofTraven’s characters) speaking in Huston’sfilm version of ‘Treasure of Sierra Madre’observed, “Conscience. What a thing. If you believe you got a conscience it’llpester you to death. But if you don’tbelieve you got one, what could it dot’ya?” And Fred Dobbs could easily havebeen speaking of Ghana when (HumphreyBogart, speaking his lines) said, “This isthe country where the nuggets of gold arejust crying out for you to take them out ofthe ground and make ‘em shine in coinson the fingers and necks of swell dames.”

When it was a British colony, Ghana wasknown as the Gold Coast. Independencein 1957 led to a change in name, butnot in the country’s mineral wealth andit has grown since. In 2008 Ghana wassecond only to South Africa in Africa’sgold production; and one would think thatbetween its gold, its cocoa and its oil thepeople of the country would be doing well.Such is not the case; the claim jumpershave moved in. Attracted by seeminglyguaranteed profitability, it works thisway. ToToT encourage the spread of mineralwealth, Ghanian law allows a Ghanian ina position of trust, authority or outrightownership to obtain a lease for miningfrom his government. Even though sucha lease is, in theory, solely for Ghaniannationals, the question of a sublease isso open to interpretation that an originallessee can sublet his mining claim to aChinese mining firm. This starts the ballrolling.

The boom in the price of gold (it hasincreased from about $290/ounce in2002 to about $1650/ounce today) hasmade it profitable for Chinese miners tobring in heavy equipment. Once there, many of these formidably equippedminers have extended their operationsinto some restricted areas, workingwithout a permit and without any care forthe land. Commenting on the problem,Ahmed Nantogma, Director of PublicAffairs at Ghana’s Chamber of Mines, said“You“You“Y go where your product is. So thatis why they are not going to say, Congo

or Liberia, they come to Ghana. And theyknow they can take advantage of thesituation and hide somewhere in a bushand mine illegally without paying taxes.”Nor does the Ghanian Government haveany idea how many unregistered (illegal)Chinese there may be in the countryengaged in illegal gold mining.

The problem is not only that untrainedGhanians are not employed in Chineseoperated mines, it is compounded byignorance (of the real worth of a lease)and gullibility (sure, we’ll clean up whenwe’re done.) Ghanian activist Owusu-Koranteng put it this way. “Mining goeswith a lot of myths, like it creates jobs,it brings development, it makes people’slives better. That is the first deception:that you are sitting on gold and somebodyis going to mine it. YouYouY cannot imaginefor once the person can take the goldaway and leave you in a bad state. Wealso have a situation where our lands aretaken over by mining. They (the farmers)lost their jobs, their lands were gone, theriver is polluted and the skills they hadcould not fit into the skills of the mining.”Greed, of course (and as it usually does),keeps wealth from ‘trickling down’; buthere in the U.S. the jewelry business hasa conscience.

TodayTodayT much of the gold used in Americanmade jewelry is gold that has been‘recycled’ from everything from computermother boards, to gold teeth and realjewelry. When our business is the stuff ofgreat human emotions, how can we doless? Naturally, here at Hursts’ BerwynJewelers we make sure that the gemsand precious metals we use are ethicallysourced; and we do this not only becauseit’s the right thing to do. HINSDALE — It was Kathryn Brackett’s 100th birthday Dec. 26, but she didn’t care. Age was only a number, and what was more important to her were those who were by her side: friends and family.

“It was very much a surprise to me,” said Brackett, who didn’t expect a party to be held in her honor Jan. 8 at Adventist Hinsdale Hospital. “You get to be 100 without doing anything about it.”

Everyone wanted to say ‘hi’ to Brackett and flood her with compli-ments, mostly about how good she looked and how happy they were to see her, but that was secondary to her as she

mostly was concerned with whether or not every one of her visitors got to have a piece of cake.

“They really did get me the most beautiful cake,” she said.

Brackett has been volunteering with Adventist Hinsdale since 1978 and has logged about 5,500 hours, mostly with the sewing circle creating dog and cat pillows for kids in the hospital.

“I enjoy it and it’s actually quite a bit of work,” she said. “It’s a nice gift though and we do it every Tuesday morning for the kids.”

Brackett didn’t look or sound like she was 100 at all. She was all smiles, lucid and full of joy when she was showing off the pillows they made for all the chil-dren.

“I don’t know when I started doing this to tell you the truth, but I just really got into sewing pillows,” she said.

She asked twice if the interview was almost over. After a few shared laughs she opened up about her husband, Harold, who together celebrated their 74th anni-versary in October. Also a hospital volun-teer, Harold died a month later.

But whatever longevity trick they were doing worked, as he also saw his 100th birthday.

Brackett’s daughter-in-law, Judy, said she and the rest of her family encouraged Brackett to continue volunteering after Harold died. Like the others in atten-dance during the birthday party, Judy couldn’t say enough about Brackett.

“She is amazing,” she said. “I think as long as she’s able to (volunteer), then she’s going to keep doing it. It’s a part of who she is.”

Goddard School uses learning-through-fun approach to teaching curriculum

By DANNY [email protected]

DARIEN — When Kathy Silver picked up her son from the new Goddard School in Darien, he said “Hola” and then signed the word, “Mom.” He’s 2.

“The other morning he said, ‘Mommy, where are we going?’ and I said, ‘You’re going to school,’ and he asked, ‘Ms. Nora’s class?’” Silver said. “I said ‘Yes,’ and he said, ‘Yay!’”

The Goddard School is a year-round preschool that serves children from 6 weeks to 6 years old. What sets Goddard apart from other schools is what it refers to as using a FLEX program, or a fun learning experience. The philosophy is to have a child-focused lesson plan and curriculum that creates excitement and curiosity for learning.

The newest local franchise owner, Michael Petrucelli of Oak Brook, spent 20 years working in financial services. Until about three years ago, he was working on Wall Street. But it just wasn’t for him.

“My wife and I really wanted to start our own business — ideally something that involved kids, education and some-thing that could give back to the com-munity,” said Petrucelli, who opened the Darien school Jan. 2.

The 49-year-old also is father to three elementary-aged kids. He said it was because of them and his past work as a soccer and baseball coach that he wanted to start a business in which he could help all children.

Goddard itself is child-centric because the teachers, along with their education director, create a lesson plan customized for the children in the classroom.

“It’s the teachers that spend all the time with the kids,” Petrucelli said. “They’re the ones who understand their inter-ests and their needs. For example, if you have a classroom full of boys that really love dinosaurs, we can use dinosaurs as a learning tool.”

Tony Padulo, vice president of fran-chise development for Goddard School, said the learning-through-play phi-losophy has been in place for the last 25 years. The Darien school, one of its new-est of nearly 400 locations, has a current enrollment of about 40 children served by nine teachers.

“Everything that we do in our schools is based around learning and it’s done in a fun environment,” Padulo said.

To help become better learners for the future, children are introduced at an early age to learning how to use comput-ers, speaking foreign languages, learn-ing sign language and even doing yoga. Petrucelli’s voice grew with excitement as he talked about the natural curiosity to learn at this early age.

“If you can make learning fun and make someone a naturally curious person, then your chances for success and a happy life really just grow tremendously,” he said. “It’s all about giving children the con-fidence to be positive, the confidence to want to learn and to really celebrate their learning.”

The curriculum at Goddard is similar to that at an elementary or middle school in that there are set objectives each day, but it’s driven by the teacher and chil-dren. The fun doesn’t just come from the stories and sing-alongs the kids partici-pate in every day, but also from what they want to learn.

Mala Gandhi of Woodridge has a 15-month-old daughter who just started at Goddard. Gandhi said she chose the school because of its reputation and wanting her daughter to socialize with those her age.

“We do anticipate to see a lot of growth and we are actually seeing a lot of changes

DOWNERS GROVE — Hunter Himes, the 15-year-old Downers Grove boy who was struck by a car while riding his bike home from a friend’s house last year, died Sunday from injuries sustained in the accident.

Hunter was riding his bike on the side-walk along Lemont Road on Feb. 26, 2012, when he was hit by a truck making a right turn from Lemont onto Beller Drive, accord-ing to the accident report. He was rushed to Advocate Good Samaritan Hospital, and the accident left him with a severe traumatic brain injury.

The driver in the accident, Timothy Hagan of Darien, was found guilty in November of a traffic citation — failure to yield to a pedes-trian on a sidewalk — and a judge sentenced him to 300 hours of community service and ordered him to pay a $1,500 fine. In his rul-

ing, the associate judge said that he was giv-ing the toughest penalty he could.

Throughout the past year, the community rallied around Hunter and his family with vigils, dinners and fundraising events, as well as a petition to install tougher penalties for striking a pedestrian. The effort adopted orange, Hunter’s favorite color, on T-shirts and ribbons.

The accident left Hunter in a permanent vegetative state, and during the November court hearing his mother, Terra Idhe, said his condition had worsened. Hunter was placed on hospice care after his parents learned he would not recover from his injuries, she said.

Visitations took place Tuesday at Modell Funeral Home in Darien, with a funeral Mass that followed on Wednesday at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church.

In lieu of flowers, the family is asking donations be made to “Hope for Hunter” at Charter One Bank.

Garage fire causes $70K in damageBy AMBER [email protected]

HINSDALE — A fire contained to a three-car garage in Hinsdale caused $70,000 in damage Saturday night.

About 5:33 p.m., the Southwest Central Dispatch 911 center received a call from a resident at 28 E. 57th St. who reported a fire in her garage, fire offi-cials said. The dispatcher advised the resident to evacuate the home, located in the southeast corner of Hinsdale near Hinsdale Central High School.

The Hinsdale Fire Department responded with a truck company, engine company and ambulance to a fully involved attached garage fire with flames and heavy smoke coming from the front of the garage. The fire was then upgraded to a box alarm, bring-ing on mutual-aid companies to assist Hinsdale fire crews.

At the scene, firefighters used hand lines and aggressive overhaul to con-tain the fire to the attached three-car garage, fire officials said. The fire was controlled within minutes after arriving on the scene, and completely out within 10 or 15 minutes after arriving.

“The guys really did a nice job of get-

ting there quickly and safely and putting water on the fire in a very short amount of time,” said Steve Tullis, spokesman for the Hinsdale Fire Department.

The attic area above the garage suf-fered heavy smoke damage, but the blaze did not reach the interior of the home.

The homeowner was able to remove the cars from the garage before the fire department’s arrival, but several items in the garage and stored above it were damaged.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation but appears to be acci-dental and not suspicious in nature, fire officials said. The homeowner was treated for minor injuries at the scene and one firefighter was taken to the hospital for a minor illness.

Additional crews that were request-ed to the scene provided ventila-tion, salvage and overhaul operations. Assisting Hinsdale were firefight-ers from the Pleasantview, Tri-State, Western Springs, Westmont, Clarendon Hills, Oak Brook and Oakbrook Terrace fire departments. A fire engine from Brookfield Fire Department and an ambulance from Elmhurst Fire Department stood by as change-of-quarters companies.

Topinka must make state comptroller books availableTo the Editor:

Our organization, For the Good of Illinois, filed a Freedom of Information Act request nine months ago asking Republican Illinois Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka to send us one year of the state’s checkbook.

We were simply seeking an accounting of state expenditures so we could share that information with Illinois citizens through our online database. Our request for this information was rejected.

The comptroller asserted that “review, redaction and arrangement of all 2011 vendor payments would take multiple staff members, dedicated solely to this request, more than three days to complete.” Topinka’s office concluded that fulfilling the request was an “undue burden.”

This conclusion is not credible, and her refusal is in fact against both the spirit and the letter of the law. Is the comptroller really going to argue that in this electronic age state gov-ernment can’t produce a timely and organized checkbook? Is the comptroller’s office really that much of a mess?

The fact our FOIA request is being denied by the state’s top financial officer because it’s inconvenient is inexcusable. Or is Comptroller Topinka trying to hide something?

Here in Illinois, income tax rates rise as fast as 67 percent overnight and property taxes double every 10 years. You would think citizens should at least have access to detailed information show-ing how their tax dollars are being spent. The state’s checkbook should be “public information.”

If this “business as usual” goes unchal-lenged, governmental entities across Illinois will begin denying citizen requests. Providing such information is the essence of the Freedom of Information Act.

In fact, no other Illinois governmental entity has denied our similar FOIA requests.

We’re not asking Comptroller Topinka to lead the charge for openness and accountability — we are simply asking her to follow the law, as did virtually every other state and local entity.

Eight months ago, we asked Democratic Illinois Attorney General Lisa Madigan’s office of public access counselor to render a legal opinion on Comptroller Topinka’s refusal to release one year’s information of the state’s checkbook. Initially, the attorney general opened a case saying, “further inquiry is war-ranted.” But after a few perfunctory phone calls and letters, we’ve had five months of silence.

That is why, we filed a lawsuit last week to enforce the law: For The Good of Illinois Inc. v. Illinois Office of Comptroller Judy Baar Topinka. Sadly, our suit is the result of two of the biggest names in both political parties refusing to treat Illinois taxpayers and citizens with the respect they deserve and refusing to obey or enforce Illinois law.Adam Andrzejewski, Hinsdale, For the Good of Illinois founder

If we can build a better battery, we can change the world.

That statement may seem overblown if you think of batteries only as minor necessities — little cyl-inders that power children’s toys, flashlights and laptop computers.

But with rising levels of greenhouse gases in the atmo-sphere threatening our global environment, it’s clear that we need to move fast to replace carbon-emitting fossil fuels with wind and solar power. Unfortunately, electricity has no “shelf life”; it must be used as soon as it’s generated.

So we need a way to store clean power for use when the

wind doesn’t blow and the sun doesn’t shine. That means we need superbatteries that can store enough electricity to power our cars and trucks, heat and cool our homes, and keep our lights on and our fac-tories humming.

The United States took a giant step toward that goal a few weeks ago when Secretary of Energy Steven Chu chose the Joint Center for Energy Storage Research, headquartered at Argonne National Laboratory, to be the new Batteries and Energy Storage Hub. With this new hub, which represents a $120 million federal investment over the next five years, we are embarking on a historic, focused effort to transform our nation’s energy landscape.

Argonne is already in the forefront of battery research worldwide; in fact, our battery materials are powering the Chevy Volt. So we have a running start. And with JCESR, we’ve put together a “dream team” in energy storage science — a public/private partnership that brings together America’s very best battery scientists, engineers and manufacturers, from academia, national labs and industry, all under one organizational roof.

We have a lot at stake here. The international market for advanced batteries is expected to grow to $50 billion over the next five years.

If JCESR succeeds in creating new, affordable, practical batteries for transportation and the grid, we will position the United States to lead the global energy storage industry, creating thousands of new jobs and restoring manufacturing in this country. Just as important, we will demonstrate the power of this new model of collaboration, showing how much we can get done when we bring together the top people from the public and private sectors, provide them with great facilities and adequate resources, and — most critically — assign them an inspirational mission and an ambitious goal.

Thumbs Up — A local medical professional has demonstrat-ed a true concern for cancer patients. Candice Washilewski, director of surgical services at Adventist La Grange Memorial Hospital, worked with the Minneapolis-based Colon Cancer Coalition in 2010 to hold the group’s Get Your Rear in Gear 5k Run/Walk in the Chicago area. She donated $25,000 of the proceeds to the Adventist Cancer Institute, which will be con-structed in Hinsdale. The race has become even more popular, with about 800 people participating last year. Washilewski has shown she’s committed to bringing comfort to people with colon cancer and advancing research to find a cure.

Remember Hearing Aids inyour Flexible Spending Plans

MAKE HEARING BETTER ONE OF YOUR NEW YEAR’S RESOLUTIONSBy Audrey G. Freeman, Au.D., Dr. of Audiology

Many of us make New Year’s resolutions to

improve our emotional and physical needs each

new year. Would you and your family enjoy you

being able to hear better in the coming year?

Studies have shown that many delay pursuing

hearing help for many years. Sergei Kochkin,

Ph.D. of the Better Hearing Institute has written

about why many put off this positive step in

communicating better. He states that a key reason

some people hold off their purchase is:“I do

not trust hearing healthcare providers who fit

hearing aids!”The data shows that nearly 90%

of consumers are satisfied with their hearing aid

professional.

Dr. Kochkin writes that many people who

have avoided amplification tend to believe there

is little value in hearing aids. By low value they

mistakenly assume that“hearing aids will not

work for them,”and therefore, they will not derive

any benefit. Both consumers and many physicians

have little knowledge of the potential benefit of

hearing aids. In recent years, large-scale research

has been published on the impact of hearing aids

on an improved quality of life.

Hearing aids have an impressive list of

potential benefits including greater earning

power, improved interpersonal relationships, reduced difficulty in communicating, enhanced

emotional stability, reduced social phobias, increased self-esteem, improved perceptions of

mental acuity, greater level of socialization, and reduced anger, frustration, depression,

and anxiety. When these findings were recently presented to a group of medical doctors,

one prominent physician stated, “I was not aware of the seriousness of hearing loss and

the potential for hearing aids to alleviate theproblem. Every doctor in the world must be madeaware of these findings!”

A common myth is that your hearing loss

cannot be helped. In the past, many people

with hearing loss in one ear, with a high

frequency hearing loss, or with nerve damage

have all been told they cannot be helped. This

might have been true many years ago; but with

modern advance in technology, nearly 95% of

people with a sensorineural (nerve) hearing

loss can be helped with hearing aids.

Hearing aid technology has improved

greatly over the past few years. If you did not

like the aids you tried before, it is likely worth

your effort to try again. There new options,

accessories, and styles.

Don’t put off the resolution of better

hearing and communication one more year.

Call your professional audiologist today and

schedule an easy hearing evaluation to make

the first step to better communication today.

Just the idea of winter makes many want to curl up under a blanket by the fireplace with some good wine, snacks and a classic movie — and forget about going outside, let

alone, exercising. When it’s too cold for that normal neighborhood jog,

or your kids can’t participate in customary youth leagues with their friends, it’s time to find an alternative. There are plenty of options in the western suburbs for families looking to change up the typical indoor treadmill and elliptical-based gym. Forget tedious, boring exercise. This winter, shake things up at these unique gyms and athletic facilities.

Oak Brook Aquatic CenterAddress: 1450 Forest Gate Road, Oak BrookContact: 630-990-4233, obparks.org/aquatics

Aside from open swim, the water park offers parent/tot swim lessons, youth swim lessons, private swim instruction and advanced training. And the tide is high for adult fun — from scuba diving certification to swim lessons, fitness training and fluid running in deep water. Daily fees for the aquatic center are $10 for resident adults, $12 for nonresi-dent adults, and $6 and $8, respectively, for both youth and ages 55 and better.

The combination makes for a never-ending bounce fest. If you have the urge to get your bounce on too, Xtreme Trampolines offers adult “Airobics” classes at 7 p.m. every Tuesday and Thursday. Classes cost $8 each, or $60 for 10 sessions. Xtreme Trampolines charges hourly for jumping fun, and prices start at $11 for the first hour, with each con-secutive hour priced at $6.

Cantigny Golf AcademyAddress: 27W270 Mack Road, WheatonContact: 630-260-8236, www.cantignygolf.com

The five-workshop series is open to the public, and can accommodate all skill levels. The series was set to kick off with “True Fundamentals of Golf” this week, continuing with “Fix My Slice!” on Jan. 30; “How to Be More Consistent” on Feb. 13; “Gain More Yards Off the Tee” on Feb. 27; and “The Best Way to Practice” on March 20. The golf series is priced by the session, and costs $10 for adults and $5 for golfers younger than 18. The one-hour classes begin at 6 p.m. To sign up, call 630-260-8236 or email [email protected].

former joins with Megan Mercier to lead a collective of artists who take an unusual approach to live the-ater. Among its offer-ings, the 24-year-old troupe lays claim to Chicago’s longest-

running show, “Too Much Light Makes The Baby Go Blind,” which aims to deliver 30 plays in 60 minutes each weekend. Dardai dis-cusses the Herculean task.

Explain The Neo-Futurists’ concept.

The important thing about our theater aesthetic is that we are as honest as pos-sible with the audience. We are honest about our own lives. … When we perform things, we don’t try to suspend disbelief. We’re trying to strip all the artifice out of what we’re doing at all times. That’s the core of the aesthetic. The other things are randomness and audience interaction. We do a lot of stuff with chance — stuff we can’t recreate the same way multiple times.

How do chance and audience interaction apply to ‘Too Much Light?’

Our theater has admission that is decided by a roll of the die. People (pay) $9 and roll (to determine the full ticket price). The audience is part of the show. We make a lot of use of talking with them. (It) introduces the element of surprise for us. (And there’s) a list of 30 titles that the audience is given as part of the playbill. We have numbers on a clothesline above the stage. When we start the show, (an audience member will) yell out a number at random. We pull that number off the clothesline. The audience decides in the moment, and we

have no idea what comes next. Part of the fun is we attempt to complete 30 plays in an hour. We don’t always finish.

Brevity as the soul of wit? We’re trying to be concise. Even if

there’s a complicated topic, we want to find a concise, impactful way of saying it. ‘Too Much Light’ changes every single week. Every week, two to 12 of 30 plays have to be removed — decided by the roll of the die. We get used to writing and rehearsing very quickly. Within a week,

we have to have a brand new show ready.

Are the plays in a certain genre? It’s much like life. It will be comedy,

tragedy … political and world events. Some of it will be very abstract. Moving pieces with no words — thought-provok-ing emotional response. All those things can be part of a single evening.

You’re part of a cast of how many? There’s a rotating cast. Fifteen of us are

in the active ensemble; five to eight of us

perform the show each weekend.

How early did you begin writing?I’d say I was writing short-story type

things since kindergarten. I had a number of teachers who were very encouraging about reading and writing my own stuff.

Did you do a lot of acting at Downers Grove North High School?

I was primarily on the crew — the tech-nical side. I did do some parts in senior year, (and became) involved in acting.

What is the coming play ‘Analog’ about?‘Analog’ is conceived of by one of our

ensemble members. A more abstract show, it kind of takes as its core the nature of fate and routine and processes, and there’s an autobiographical element. The author once had a period of his life when he (felt) compelled to transcribe a copy of the ‘Lord of the Flies.’ That forms the initial germ of the idea.

Comeback win caps memorable week for HornetsBy SCOTT [email protected]

Last week was a memorable one for the Hinsdale South girls basketball team and Toni Romiti.

A 60-44 victory over Proviso East in which the senior guard scored 40 points kicked off a five-day stretch that ended with a come-

from-behind 53-50 win over the host Trojans Saturday as part of the Winter Classic at Downers Grove North high school.

In between was a 56-27 decision over Addison Trail that gives the Hornets a three-game winning streak and an overall record of 10-7 head-ing into Saturday’s

non-conference matchup with Richards.“It was a really nice week for us,” said

Hinsdale South coach Jen Belmonte. The highlight no doubt was the individual

performance of Romiti, who knocked down seven three-pointers to reach her career-high against the Pirates. She also added eight steals.

“I don’t even know,” Romiti said. “When I have games like that, I’m in a zone almost. After

it happens, when I look back, I think, ‘Whoa I scored that much?’ I don’t look at the score-book, I just play. And if we would have lost, it would not have mattered to me.”

Romiti added 25 points against Addison Trail and then helped Hinsdale South recover from a 15-point fourth quarter deficit Saturday against the Trojans.

The guard scored nine points in the final two minutes to pull the Hornets within one before Mary Clare Ladd sank two free throws with 15 seconds remaining to give the visitors the lead. Romiti added two from the charity stripe with 3.2 seconds left to ice the game and finished with 19 points. Mackenzie Kern chipped in with 13.

“It was one of those things where we knew we could do it but we just needed a spark,” Belmonte said. “In the fourth quarter we came out with a lot of fire and energy and it was awesome to see.”

The team’s focus will soon shift to the West Suburban Gold conference race where they find themselves trailing Willowbrook by one game courtesy of the Warriors’ 49-35 win over the Hornets on Dec. 15. The two teams will meet again on Jan. 24 but this time it will be on Hinsdale South’s home court.

“Hopefully we can pull that out,” Romiti added. “Willowbrook didn’t graduate anybody besides one girl and they all play travel ball together. We lost almost everybody; it is hard to meld with kids you haven’t played with before but we are trying.”
