HIPPI for newcomersHIPPI for newcomers
HIPPI = High Intensity Pulsed Proton Injectors
Main objective:
Research and development of the technology for high intensity pulsed proton linear accelerators up to an energy of 200 MeV.
- First proposal in March 2003- Final proposal in September 2003- Start in January 2004 for 5 years
duration
HIPPI is at the end of its 2nd year, almost mid way to the end…
We are now in the real business !

HIPPI Management ChangesHIPPI Management Changes
Purely CERN-related problem: in 2006 the CERN AB Department had to replace 6 Group Leaders out of 9…
Roland Garoby has been convinced to accept the responsibility of the BDI (=Beam Diagnostics and Instrumentation) Group (~85 people, LHC on sight…), effective from September 1st.
RG was forced to reduce his other responsibilities: he has convinced MV to accept the role of HIPPI coordinator from July 1st as well as the responsibility for the CERN contribution to HIPPI-related work (R&D for Linac4).
However, RG remains involved in CERN studies for future accelerators, keeps responsibility of the SPL work at CERN and contributes to BENE and HHH Networks inside CARE.
And he sends to HIPPI05 his greetings and his wishes for a good work!
Why change a well experienced team?

HIPPI LifeHIPPI Life
- Preparation of reports and of this meeting went very smoothly thanks to the excellent communication inside the JRA.
- Scientific progress is constant.- We are (more or less) keeping up with our milestones and
deliverables.- Good number and quality of publications.- We are hiring people, mostly young and motivated, and we are
training them for a career in the field of accelerators.- HIPPI stands as a good example inside CARE.
A great thank to: All HIPPIes for the pleasant and effective working
atmosphere Our Work Package Coordinators for their excellent work in
driving and coordinating the activities, preparing the meetings, contributing to the reports, …

HIPPI ProgressHIPPI Progress
- 2nd 2005 Quarterly Report finished on Aug. 30th (46 pages!). Note that in order to reduce the amount of paperwork, we have only 2 Quarterly Reports (April and August) plus the Annual report (December).
- Internal and External (collaboration) meetings proceed as scheduled, with good attendance and quality of presentations.
- Proposition for an additional member: INFN-Naples has experience of Side Coupled NC Structures for medical applications. They (Prof. Vaccaro + a small team) would like to join HIPPI WP2 from 2006, in case a common programme could be agreed with the partners (and with no financial contribution from EU).

External Scientific Advisory External Scientific Advisory CommitteeCommittee
The ESAC plays a very important role in our work !
We have read carefully the 2004 ESAC Report and we have used it as a reference in the continuation of our work. It was a balanced document that has started reaction to some critical issues, and we are grateful to the ESAC members for the time and work devoted to its preparation.
We regret that Prof. Yamazaki is not able to attend this meeting, due to a last minute management problem at JAERI, but we hope that he will be able to contribute from Japan.
From the ESAC, we expect as usual a summary talk on Friday with a short draft document.
A longer document should be prepared before the end of October, to be presented and discussed at the CARE05 Meeting, and to be part of the HIPPI Annual Report to be sent to Brussels.

The External Scientific Advisory Committee for the HIPPI JRA inside CARE has been nominated to analyse the work done and planned in the frame of HIPPI and to give advice to the HIPPI management, by making assessments and by providing recommendations. More specifically, the following questions have to be addressed: # 1 (general) Please review and comment the overall scientific quality of the research carried out. What were the most important accomplishments of the past year? How does the work compare with the international level? # 2 (labs & groups) Does the work presented by the different labs match with the HIPPI work plan? Is it consistent and sufficiently transparent scientifically? Comment on the proper use of resources. Is it clear how the groups proceed in the following year? # 3 (WP's) Comment on the effectiveness of interaction within WP's. Is there enough visibility of WP collaboration? Comment on what needs to be strengthened.
