Hiring a Disciple
11-21-10
The Jesus method of interviewing
• Starting in Luke 4:14• Jesus knew that discipleship was the approach
He would use to spread His message• He needed trustworthy, teachable, energetic
men who would follow Him• He began the interview process……
He was invited to dinner
• Peter had very little experience in who he was dealing with, but knew he wanted to understand more
• There was faith in the house to see his mother healed
Peter had a bent for action
• Jesus picks a boat (at random????) and asks Peter to row out into the lake
• So Peter does
• Jesus is the center of attention, not him
Peter was obedient
• Jesus – the non-fisherman, gives instruction on fishing
• Peter – the fisherman who “knows better” declares his willingness to follow the instruction
• It defied science, nature, and Peter’s own intuition, but he did it anyhow
Peter – the uber fisherman
• So many fish that he needed help from his friends
• So many fish that his boat started to sink• Possibly more fish than he had ever caught in
his life in one day• His response?
Peter gives credit to the King
• He gives full credit to the One who provided• He recognized that he could not have done it
on his own
What is true about the turtle?
There is no way it got up there by itself
Think through this….
• Jesus extends the invitation• Peter’s got some decisions to make– What about the unmended nets?– What about my wife, my mother in law, my
responsibilities– What about my boat
• They forsook everything and followed
The cost of discipleship
• Peter left all he had• The rich young ruler would not make the same
commitment (Matthew 19:16-30)• Americans are the most wealthy people in the
history of the world• Are we more like Peter or the guy who was
wealthy?• Would your check book reflect it?
