WHERE TO POST YOUR JOBWhere to find the right candidate for your new position.

When looking for a social media marketing manager, it’s important to look and post where qualified candidates are participating. A great candidate will be on most social platforms, sharing content, involved with local groups, and if they’re in the job market, looking on job boards and social channels. Look for candidates that are sharing content and having conversations with people in these places:

Local Groups and OrganizationsParticipate in local social media groups, meet-ups, and business organizations and use those networking opportunities to find candidates. University job boards, local chamber of commerce meetings, and local marketing groups are great resources. Consider sponsoring a local social media event. They frequently allow for announcements to their organization and it’s a great place to let people know your company is hiring.

Social Media PlatformsPost your job opening on all social platforms reach candidates where they are participating socially. A good candidate will be looking on social, as well as other places for job leads.

Social Networking and Job Search WebsitesSocial networking sites such as LinkedIn are very valuable in finding the right person. Job search sites are good, as most people looking for a job will be on 2-3 of them.

RESEARCHHow to effectively research your social media manager candidate.

If you’re hiring a social media manager, you obviously want someone who not only uses social media, but has a personal brand and a positive social voice. Here are some ideas of where to look and what to look for.

Look for your candidate on all major social platforms. What are they posting? You can learn a lot about your candidate by looking at their posts, photos, and videos. It’s also a good idea to look at their posting frequency. Don’t just look at the first few posts, go back over several months.

Search for your candidate.Google. Bing. Whatever search you like. This may not be easy if they have a common name, but give it a try. It’s a good way to learn about potential candidates, organizations they’re involved in, and how they socially support others.

Look for past social campaigns they’ve been involved with. This is a great way to see their work in action and their creativity.

This may feel like you’re stalking your candidates, but this is a necessary step in finding the right person for the job. Just so you know, they’re researching you and your company in the same manner.

RANDOM OBJECT PROJECTHere’s a sample project to use during the interview.

Here’s a simple project to see how quickly your candidate thinks on their feet, to get a glimpse of their creativity level, and to see how they will interact on the different social platforms.

Grab a random object. Grab some random object or something related to your business. Yes, this is similar to the old “sell me this pencil” routine, but with a social twist. During the interview, set the object on the table.

Ask any of these questions.

What are three uses for this object?

How would you determine a target audience to promote this object?

How would you promote this on Facebook?

What three hashtags would your tweet with this object?

How would you photograph this for Instagram?

How would you create a social campaign around this object?

If you were blogging about this object, what would the title be?
