This September I looked forward to the first morning of schoolwhen I, along with faculty and staff, welcomed new and return-ing families and their students to our campus at Foxcroft

Academy. This year, my second at Foxcroft Academy, it was a pleasure

to greet 370 local day students as well as 61 students whose fam-ilies or towns pay tuition directly to the Academy, among whichare 26 boarding students, both domestic and international.

I would like to say to our families: thank you for the privilegeof educating your children. As an independent school we understand

that we must earn the right to educate the students who attendFoxcroft Academy. While historically Foxcroft, and then Dover, and more

recently, Monson, Charleston, and Sebec have chosen to send their studentsto the Academy, we never take for granted this tremendous privilege given to us by thefamilies and towns who have Foxcroft Academy as their school of choice.

Others too have recognized the quality of education provided by the Academy becausein recent years a number of families and students from neighboring towns with their ownpublic high school have expressed an interest in attending Foxcroft Academy. Students andfamilies are attracted to the Academy in large measure due to the breadth of our academicprogram, including our Advanced Placement courses. Unfortunately, many of these parentscan't afford tuition payments. Recognizing this need, Paul and Genie Dillon created the AzureDillon Academic Aspirations Scholarship Fund in memory of their daughter who was killedin a tragic automobile accident in her senior year. The fund awarded its first scholarship thisyear to assist a family with tuition payments so that their child could attend Foxcroft Acad-emy. Recently, alumna Barbara Livermore Morrison '36 left a portion of her estate as a bequestto the Academy to establish the Barbara Livermore Morrison Academic Aspirations Scholar-ship Fund. We are grateful for these friends and alumni of Foxcroft Academy who are helping tomake it possible for more young men and women to experience a Foxcroft Academy education.

With other educational options available nearby, the Academy is held to the highest levelof accountability as it is evaluated in the marketplace every day. Families keenly perceive thevalue in a Foxcroft Academy education, for which we are grateful. As you read this issue ofthe Foxcroft, you will learn of the wonderful work of our faculty and students in implement-ing a school-wide code of ethics, our developing relationship with Jackson Laboratory, andvarious students' achievements in the classroom as well as on the athletic fields.

My thanks to all supporters, past and present, whose charitable gifts continue to makethe Academy a school of distinction. A special thanks to the classes of 1937, 1952, and 1954,for their newly established class endowment funds. With leadership and vision like this, ourfuture is filled with optimistic hopes and dreams.

Sincerely,Allen Adriance, Headmaster

Dear Friends of Foxcroft Academy:

FALL/WINTER 2004 1

Foxcroft Academy News

While Foxcroft Academy has been on the cutting edge inMaine and New England in developing a standards-basedcurriculum that raises academic standards for all students,

the standards now being talked about among faculty, students, admin-istration and Trustees are not strictly academic in nature.

Over the past five years, beginning in 1999, the administrationand faculty have been working at developing their own code of ethicsas professionals. This work was in part supported by a collaborativerelationship with the Institute of Global Ethics located in Camden,Maine. While the work is ongoing, a written code of ethics was adoptedin 2002 and today is part of the school handbook which governs howfaculty, staff and administrators are to conduct themselves with eachother, students and others with whom they serve.

In the spring of 2004 Foxcroft Academy took the next significantstep forward in providing students an opportunity to begin the pro-cess of defining a code of ethics which will guide their conduct asstudents and community members. Staff members conducting thetraining have explained to students, “When we think about schoolsand what should be taught in them, of course we think that academ-ics should be the main focus. But it is hard to learn in a place withouta common core of values that makes it a safe place and one that en-sures equal treatment for all students. Although teachers and admin-istrators should be the model for such behavior, they alone are notresponsible for making schools such a place. Students have an obliga-tion to each other to uphold treatment that delivers respect.”

From a historical perspective, the Academy has always viewedits educational mission very “holistically”, in fact, as recently as 1972Foxcroft Academy had as a part of its mission statement phrases suchas “social consciousness” and “moral obligations” and the studenthandbook even included the statement, “promotion of literature, science, morality, and piety….based on the teaching of Jesus Christ.”While today Foxcroft serves as a non-sectarian independent school, the Academy remains true to its historic mission as it focuses on thedevelopment of a common code of ethics which can guide the conductand behavior of administration, faculty, and students.

Toward this end, staff members have provided 45 students withtraining over a period of several months in an ethical problem solvingmodel which has taught them to examine their own personal values, think before they act, and act in harmony with what we as an institu-

tion and individuals say we believe. These 45 student leaders in turnhave had the opportunity to lead the entire Academy student body, divided up into 28 small groups, through the ethical problem solvingmodel over a six-week period. The work will continue this year and cul-minate in students proposing the adoption of a student code of ethics.

The ethics training, as one staff member observed, “Caused stu-dent leaders to do some soul searching and self-examination. Like allof us, they are not perfect and perhaps don’t always act in harmonywith their values. But they have had the determination, the strengthof character to persevere, and the responsibility to follow through. They deserve recognition for their service to our school and for lead-ing the way and taking a risk in helping to make Foxcroft Academy abetter place for all students.”

This past summer, as part of the Academy’s continuing relation-ship with The Jackson Laboratory in Bar Harbor, Ms. JessicaWentworth, a science instructor at Foxcroft Academy, partici-

pated in an eight-week intensive project involving animal stem cellresearch. The Jackson Laboratory is internationally recognized as onethe world’s leading mammalian genetic research facilities.

Ms. Wentworth’s summer research under the sponsorship ofDr. David Harrison is in preparation for a research projectthat Academy students will participate in during thenext few years at the Academy. Her projectincluded work with mice embryon-ic stem cells (ES cells). According toMs. Wentworth, “The goal of my work was to have the ES cells differ-entiate to become hematopoietic stem cells, which are cells that canreplicate indefinitely and can differentiate into other cells; specifically, into the formation of blood or blood cells.” Ms. Wentworth workedon her project with additional help from Dr. Jane Barker, a 1953 alum-na of Foxcroft Academy and Senior Scientist with Jackson Lab, whodemonstrated the specific dissection of the embryonic mice.

Ms. Wentworth also served as one of the resident assistants forthe lab’s summer program for students, involving 34 students fromall over the world, including Ireland and Malta. The students eachhave their own research sponsor at the lab and are required to writeproject proposals, give seminars about their projects, and write afinal paper, as well as give a lecture at the final symposium.

One of the projects that Foxcroft Academy is preparing to part-ner with Jackson Lab on is under the direction of Dr. David Harrison, whose area of research at the lab has been genetic and endocrinemechanisms of aging. The specific research project for which Academystudents would prepare and collect data on tissue cultures is knownas: Pluripotency of Mesenchymal Stem Cells Derived from Adult MouseMarrow. Ms. Wentworth’s training this summer was in preparationfor her leadership with Aca-

demy students incollecting data forthis research.

To put this re-search piece in place, Fox-croft Academy will need tocreate a sterile environmentto conduct tissue culture de-velopment. To fund all thenecessary equipment for thisresearch, Foxcroft Academywill need to raise approxi-mately $34,000. Those inter-ested in additional informa-tion or making a charitable contribution to help create this tissueculture lab, please contact Jay Brennan at Foxcroft Academy at(207)564-8664 or [email protected].

We welcome these new faculty members to Foxcroft Academy!

Foxcroft Academy was pleased to welcome this fall Mrs. LeePearsall as its new Director of Counseling Services. She re-places Colleen Grover who provided the Academy with nine

years of exemplary service. Mrs. Pearsall is the former Director ofCounseling Services at PCHS in Guilford. She earned her mastersdegree in counseling at the University of North Dakota and hasserved as a family and adolescent counselor at the Ozark GuidanceCenter in Berryville, Arkansas. Counseling services also welcomedMs. Sadie Faulkner, a recent graduate from the masters program atthe University of Maryland, College Park, and she replaces KandiGrant Martin ’93 who decided to become a full-time mom to her twochildren. Ann Kendall Erickson ’82, an alumna of Husson College andgraduate student at the UMO, will assume the responsibility for theAcademy’s alternative education program.

Two new appointments were made to fill the part-time musicdirector position vacated by Mr. Arnold Poland after 27 years of excel-lent service. According to Mr. Adriance, “While the Academy pursuesa national search for a new music director, we have been fortunate tofind two highly qualified music educators who have agreed to step infor the 2004-05 school year to provide leadership to our music pro-gram.” Mrs. Pat Hinkley, who for the past several years has served asa volunteer and substitute teacher in the music program, will be as-suming responsibilities for the choral program. Mrs. Hinkley is a grad-uate of North Central College (Illinois) and George Mason University(Virginia). Mr. Jason Brown, who had been serving as a music instruc-

Report of Charitable GivingJuly 1, 2003, through June 30, 2004

Dear Friends,

On behalf of Foxcroft Academy’s Board of Trustees, I want to thank you for your participation in this year’s annualgiving program. Your gift shows your understanding of the challenges inherent in funding independent school educationas well as playing a critical role in bridging the gap between tuition revenues and the true cost of an FA education.

We exceeded this year’s goal raising $61,000 in unrestricted gifts which directly supported the instructional budget. This expression of your confidence in Foxcroft Academy is essential as we look to maintain the breadth of our academicprogramming while local tuition revenues decline. In addition, $137,336 in charitable cash gifts were received tosupport specific academic, athletic, and scholarship programs. We also received in-kind gifts valued at over $60,000.Again, thank you for your generosity to Foxcroft Academy.

with a generous gift of $250 or more to the Annual Giving Campaign, while at the same time helping to support academic programs. A brassnameplate has been placed on a chair in the Pride Manufacturing Stu-dent Center with the wording of their choice. These nameplates alsoserve in helping students understand the importance of philanthropyin the life of a school such as Foxcroft. Another option would be toname a chair to honor a faculty member who had an important impacton your life. With a gift of $1,000 you may name one of the tables inthe Pride Student Center. It’s as easy as checking one of the boxes onthe contribution envelope in which you return your gift and the De-velopment Office will contact you for more specific instructions.

Alumni Weekend 2004 began with the Lawn Party onFriday night, August 6. The 30th reunion of the Rom-anian Band Exchange Trip was celebrated and many

fascinating stories were recounted by those in attendance. Most of the alumni sporting events were held on Satur-

day and included, 5K Race, soccer, field hockey, basketball, and the traditional golf scramble with over 130 alumni com-peting in the various events. However, on Friday night, thefirst ever alumni ice hockey game was held at the AlfondArea in Orono. Nearly 30 past players showed up to play inwhat is hoped to become an annual event. Ice for the alumnigame was donated by the law office of Jim Austin.

The Alumni Banquet on Saturday night was attended byabout 220 people, with the Class of 1979 having a large repre-sentation of about 35 classmates and spouses. Presentationsof the alumni awards were made with Mrs. Madelyn BallardBetts ’30 receiving the Dr. Mary Chandler Lowell Award, givento an alumnus who has distinguished him/herself in theirchosen profession. Ironically, Mrs. Betts was instrumentalin organizing the Mary Chandler Lowell collections at theThompson Free Library, and the Dover-Foxcroft HistoricalSociety continues to use her book Old Foxcroft as a refer-ence bible for many historical and genealogical inquiries.

Awarded the Tillson Thomas Award for her 12 years ofservice to Foxcroft Academy was Mrs. Gwendolyn TrefethenHaynes. From 1949 - 1961 she was known as Mrs. Trefethen, whose son Bob was a member of the Class of 1954.Mrs. Trefethen taught Latin and French and was the onlyforeign language teacher here at that time. She also coachedthe girls’ basketball team and served as a class advisor to anumber of classes. In addition, she directed “Class Day”programs for several graduating classes, including the classof 1952’s production of Alice in Wonderland. Mrs. Haynes, now 94 years old, is in a nursing home and her son Bobgraciously accepted the award for her.

The Sunday morning brunch in the Pride Manufactur-ing Student Center was well attended and the numberscontinue to grow each year. It’s a great way for classes towrap up their reunion weekend.

Academy’s Brandon HallWins New England Title

Brandon Hall ’04, son of Gordon and Missy Merrill Hall ’84, placed first inthe high jump at the annual New England Interscholastic Outdoor Track andField Championship held in Plymouth, MA. Brandon was one of only two

Mainers to win a New England championship, winning the title with a jump of 6-8.During Brandon’s career at Foxcroft, he won 7 individual state champion-

ships, three in high jump, two in the long jump and two in the triple jump. Hewon 5 conference titles and 1 regional title. He holds the PVC high jump recordat 6-8 1/4 and the State Class C record at the same height, a feat he achieved atthis spring’s Class C State Championship Track and Field meet hosted byFoxcroft Academy. He barely missed on his second try at 6-10 1/4, which wouldhave been the best jump in state history for all classes.

This meet also produced six state records and two triple-event winners, with Brandon sweeping the long, triple and high jumps for the second straightyear, including his 6- 8 1/4 in the high jump.

Three Foxcroft Academy students: Danielle Tudor, Dustin Colbry andCaitlyn Walsh spent part of their summer at Bates College wherethey participated in the Edmund S. Muskie Scholars Program.

This program offers two weeks of intensive college-level instruction tooutstanding upcoming high school seniors who have a strong interest inU.S. political history since World War II. Participants in the program liveon the Bates College campus. During their two weeks of residence, Dustin,Danielle and Caitlyn examined in depth such topics as the civil rights move-ment, the emergence of environmentalism, the U.S. economy, U.S. foreignpolicy, the Vietnam War and Watergate. At the same time, their studiesallowed them to develop an historical perspective on contemporary polit-ical events and developments.

As in college, Muskie Scholars attend lectures, engage in small-groupdiscussions and in-class exercises, and make use of the rich instructional

resources of the college, including more than 600,000 volumes in the Ladd Library. A key feature of the program is a substantive assignmentthat demands research within the papers of Edmund S. Muskie in the Muskie Archives and Special Collections Library, one of the largestcollections in the nation on a political figure.

These students were part of Rusty Willette’s Advanced Placement American History class, one of six Advanced Placement courses of-fered at Foxcroft Academy.

Two of these students received scholarships from the Foxcroft Academy Scholarship Association to aid in the tuition cost of the program.

This spring the towncelebrated Owen’s years of service with a galacelebration held in the gym of Foxcroft Acad-emy. Well over 200 residents and friends at-tended the event, which became a friendlyroast and recounted many memorable storiesof Owen’s leadership of the town.

As a private secondary school, Foxcroft Academy accepts localday students whose families pay tuition directly to to the Academy,as well as boarding students who pay tuition room and board. How-ever, throughout its 181-year history, Foxcroft Academy has alsoprovided an independent education at a reasonable tuition rate forthose towns or school district without a public high school. Thistuition rate compares favorably with the per pupil costs of Maine’spublic secondary schools with a similar enrollment to that of theAcademy. According to figures from Maine’s Department of Educa-tion, public high schools in Maine with an enrollment of between400-500 students had an average per pupil cost for 2002-03 of$7,361.96. Yet, in the same year, Foxcroft Academy’s per pupil tuition

rate, which is capped by the state legislature, was only $6,333. Thisrepresented a 14% savings to the local school district.

In addition to tuition revenue, Foxcroft Academy has othersources of income to help support the educational programs of theschool. These include charitable donations, beneficiary income, in-vestment income, and other revenue such as the boarding program. As a result, in 2002-03, FA’s total per pupil expenditures was $6,975.75.This additional $642 per student in expenditures, beyond tax sup-ported tuition revenue, is an added value to parents, students andlocal taxpayers and reaffirms one of the advantages of an independ-ent education.
