All praise be to God, the Lord of all the worlds, the Creator of the heavens and earth and all creatures living in them. May God grant peace and blessings to Prophet Muhammad, God’s

final Messenger, whose message brought mercy to all mankind. May He also give His blessings to all the prophets and messengers whom He sent to guide mankind out of darkness and into light. At the Osoul International Centre for Islamic Advocacy, every new release that we produce gives us a great opportunity to interact with our readers. All our releases have the same overall objective; to present Islam to mankind, as it truly is. We aim to make people aware of Islam’s fine aspects and profound teachings and to show clearly that it is the only faith that provides practical and effective solutions to all the problems faced by humanity. Islam gives clear and solid answers to all of the questions that have troubled people over many generations, such as: How did we come into existence and why do we exist? Where do we go from here? Further-more, Islam is the only religion that requires its followers to love and respect all the prophets God sent, particularly Moses and Jesus (peace be upon them both).We take great care to provide solid and rational proofs for our arguments, so as to give our read-ers the reassurance they need, and our releases also refute the accusations levelled against Islam and provide clarification to people’s misunderstandings of Islamic teachings. By God’s grace, Islam is the fastest growing religion in our time, as confirmed by a study undertaken by the Pew Research Center(1), and our motive is to make this great divine faith known to all people. This book, Hisn al-Mu’min (A Believer’s Refuge), speaks of the causes of reversals and mis-fortunes that people may encounter. It highlights ways to ensure the protection and preserva-tion of God’s favours and blessings, as well as how to prevent harm and reduce the effects of personal tragedies and calamities. It teaches the ways and means to fortify oneself against the effect of such tragedies, of which the most important is the remembrance of God and glorifying Him at all times, and explains the best forms of such remembrance and glorifica-tion. The book also explains how to earn God’s pleasure, the prevention of harm, the proper form of prayer and supplication, and quotes a number of supplications mentioned in the Qur’an and the Sunnah that provide certain refuge for believers.We hope that readers will find this book useful in adding to their knowledge and understand-ing of Islam.

Terminology used in this Book

Rubb: Some prefer to translate the term ‘Rubb’ to ‘Lord.’ Beside the fact that the latter is a Biblical term referring to the alleged lordship of the slave of Al-lah, the Prophet Jesus, the word ‘lord’ which is limited to ‘master’, ‘chief’, ‘pro-prietor’, or ‘ruler’, can never convey the con-clusive significance of the term ‘Rubb’. Among its other meanings, the term ‘Rubb’ can signify: the Creator, the Fashion-er, the Provider, the One upon Whom all creatures depend for their means of subsistence, and the One Who gives life and causes death.

Deen: The Arabic word translated as religion is ‘Deen’, which in Arabic com-monly refers to a way of life—both pri-vate and public. It is an inclusive term meaning: acts of worship, political prac-tice, and a detailed code of conduct that includes hygiene and etiquette.

.Sal’lal’laaho a’laihi wa sal’lam ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص Some translate it as peace be upon him. This translation is incorrect; the correct translation is, may Allah exalt his mention, and render him and his household safe and secure from every derogatory thing.

All praise is due toAllah, Whose aid we implore, andWhose forgiveness, guidance, andprotectionagainstourownevilandsinfulactsweseek.HewhomAllahguidesaright,nonecanleadastray;andwhomHeallowstoastray,nonecanguidearight.ItestifythatthereisnotruegodworthyofbeingworshippedexceptAllahaloneWhohasnopartner,andItestifythatMuhammad,mayAllahexalthismention,istheslaveofAllah,andHisMessenger.MayAllahexalthismentionandrenderhimandhishousehold,hisCompanions,andthosewhofollowtheirwaysafefromeveryevil,andgrantthemsecurityontheDayofResurrection.

OneofthegracesthatAllah,theExalted,grantedtoMuslimsisthatHehasassignedforusactsofworshipwhichbringusnearertoHimatalltimes.RemembranceofAllahandsupplicationaretwosuchactsofworship.

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص clarifieditsmeritandvirtue,saying:“ShallItellyouofadeedwhichisbelovedtoAllah,andwouldelevateone’sranks,andwouldbebetter(fortheonewhoperformsit)thanspendinggoldandsilverforthesakeofAllah,andbetterthanfightingforthesakeofAllah?Theysaid:‘Whatisthat,OMessengerofAllah?’TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘TheremembranceofAllah,theExalted.”(Haakim#1825)

RemembranceofAllah is the ‘fortress’ thatwouldsafeguard thebeliever,his familyandhiswealth.Thisworldisatransitorystage,whereinapersonwouldbetriedandtested.Allahsays:

(Verily,WehavecreatedmanfromNutfah(dropsofmixedfluids),inordertotryhim:soWemadehimhearingandseeing.)(76:2)

Allahsays:(Verily,Wehavecreatedmanintoil.)(90:4)

Manisweak;hecannotextendbenefitorharmtoanyone,norcanhewaiveitawayfromhimselforanyoneelse.He lives inastateof constantneed…whichwouldnot ceaseuntil hedies.Manisindireneedofhelp;therefore,AllahhasguidedtheslavetoaskandsupplicateHim.SupplicationisthelinkbetweentheCreatorandtheslave.TheslavewouldbeseechhisCreatortotakecareofhisneeds,andAllahwouldanswer.Allahsays:(AndyourRubbhassaid:‘InvokeMe,Iwillrespondtoyourinvocation.Verily,thosewhoscornMyworship,theywillsurelyenterHellinhumiliation!)(40:60)

Sohewentforthbeforehispeopleinhispomp.Thosewhoweredesirousofthelifeoftheworld,said:‘Ah,wouldthatwehadthelikeofwhatQaroonhasbeengiven!Verily,heistheownerofagreatfortune.’Butthosewhohadbeengivenknowledgesaid:‘Woetoyou!TherewardofAllahintheHereafterisbetterforthosewhobelieveanddorighteousgooddeeds,and thisnooneshallattainexcept thosewhoarepatient.

SoWecaused theearth toswallowhimandhisdwellingplace.ThenhehadnogrouporpartytohelphimagainstAllah,norwasheoneof thosewhocouldsavethemselves.’)(28:76-81)

SahlSa’dsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلصpassedbyDhul-Hulaifahandsawadecayingbloated sheep whose leg was raised, andheملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Is thissheepworthless to itsmaster?’ theCompanionssaid:‘Yes!’Heملسو هيلع هللا ىلص thensaid:‘BytheOneinWhosehandsismylife,this world is more worthless toAllah than this animal to itsmaster!Werethelifeofthisworldtoequaleventhewingofamosquito,Hewouldnothavegiventhedisbelieverevenadrinkofwater.’(Haakim)

AllahgivesworldlyrichestothosewhomHelovesandtothosewhomHedoesnot;whereas the success in theHereafter isonlygrantedtohimwhomAllahloves.Furthermore,ifapersonisstruckwithacalamity,itdoesnotmeanthatAllahhatesthatperson.Allah,theExaltedrelatestousintheQur’anthestoryofProphetAyoubusaying:(AndAyoub,whenhecalledtohisRubb:‘Indeedadversityhas

Calamities are not an evil omen as some perceive; rather apersonmaybetestedwithgoodthings.Allahsays:(Everysoulwilltastedeath.AndWetestyouwithevilandwithgoodastrial;andtoUsyouwillbereturned.)(21:35)

As for the type mentioned in the verse mentioned below…thetrialofevil;AllahwouldtestHisslavetoseeifhebearsitpatientlyornot.Allahsays:(Andcertainly,Weshalltestyouwithsomethingoffear,hunger,loss of wealth, lives and fruits, but give glad tidings to thepatient.)(2:155)

As for the second type, the trial of good;Allahwould test His slave to see if he is grateful ornot.Allah, theExalted, relates tous thestoryofProphetSulaimanu:(... Said one who had knowledge from theScripture,“Iwillbringittoyoubeforeyourglancereturnstoyou.”Andwhen[Solomon]sawitplacedbefore him, he said, “This is from the favor ofmyLord to testmewhether Iwill begrateful orungrateful.Andwhoeverisgrateful–hisgratitudeisonlyfor[thebenefitof]himself.Andwhoeverisungrateful–thenindeed,myLordisFreeofneedandGenerous.”)(27:40)

ApersonshouldunderstandthatifheistestedwithgoodthingsitisnotasignthatAllahloveshimandispleasedwithhim.AllahsaysaboutQaroon:(Verily,QaroonwasofMusa’speople,buthebehavedarrogantlytowardsthem.AndWegavehimofthetreasures,thatofwhichthekeyswouldhavebeenaburdentoabodyofstrongmen.

Remember when his people said to him: ‘Do not exult withriches, being ungrateful toAllah. Verily,Allah likes not thosewhoexult.Butseek,withthatwealthwhichAllahhasbestowedonyou,thehomeoftheHereafter,andforgetnotyourportionof(lawful)enjoymentinthisworld;anddogoodasAllahhasbeengoodtoyou,andseeknotmischiefintheland.Verily,Allahlikes

ImamIbnal-Qayyim,mayAllahhavemercyonhim,said1:‘Theperson who dislikes something which is preordained for himshouldremembersixdifferentprinciples:

1st Principle: Pure Tawheed,suchthatapersonwouldsay,‘Allah has predestined, preordained, created, and what He willsshallcometopass.’2nd Principle: Justice,suchthatapersonwouldsay,‘Allahisjust,whateverHeordainsisjust.’3rd Principle: Mercy,suchthatapersonwouldsay,‘Allah’smercysurpassesHisanger.’

4th Principle: Wisdom,suchthatapersonwouldsay,‘Allahisall-Wise,andHehasordained that thiswill come topass,therefore theremust be a divinewisdombehind it whichwemayormaynotperceive.’5th Principle: Gratefulness,suchthatapersonwouldsay,‘AllthepraisebelongstoAllah,alone.’6th Principle: Complete Submission to Allah,suchthatapersonwouldrealizethatheisaslave,andthatwhateverhisMasterordainsandwillsshallcometopass.

Mus’abSa’dMaliknarratedthathisfathersaid:“O Messenger of Allah, who are the most tested and triedpeople in thisworld?Heanswered: ‘TheProphets,and thenwhoaresimilartothem(i.e.thegod-fearingandpious).AmanwouldbetestedandtriedaccordingtohispietyandDeen.Iftheindividualhasstrongfaith,hewouldbetestedandtriedin

amoreintensemanner;similarly,iftheman’sDeenisweak,hewouldbetestedaccordingly.Apersonwouldbestruckbyacalamityuntilhewouldbesin-free.”(IbnHibban#2901)

AbdullahMughaf’fal said that aman groped awoman who was known to be a harlot duringtheDays of Ignorance as hewalked past her.Sheexclaimedindisapproval:‘Leavemealone!Allah has cleansed us fromShirk (polytheism)andhonoreduswithIslam!’Heleftheralone,butturnedhisheadtolookather,(andwhilehewasdoingthis)hewalkedintoawallandcuthisface.

HethenwenttothePropheteandhesaid:“Allahdesiresgoodforyou,forifAllahdesiresgoodforaslave,hewouldpunishhiminthislifeforthesinsthathecommitted.Butifhedesiresillforaslave,hewoulddelaythepunishmentofhissinstilltheHereafter.”(Hakim#8133)

TheProphetesaid:‘Apersonwouldbeafflictedandtriedinhishealth,offspringandwealthuntilhewouldmeetAllah(ontheDayofResurrection)sin-free.’(IbnHib’ban#2924)

TherewardthatAllahhaspromisedforthosewhobearpatientlywouldonlybeforthepatientbeliever!

Andwhoeverintendsandseeksoutthislife,Allahwouldplacepovertyoverhiseyes (hewouldalwaysseewhathedoesn’thaveandthusneverbecontentwithwhathehas),andHewouldscatterforhimhisaffairs(suchthatittakeshimmuchtime),andregardlessofhowhardheworks,hewouldonlygatherwhatAllahhasalreadydecreedforhim.’(Sahihal-Targheeb,Albaani)

DevouringRiba(usury),andfacilitatingit.Allahsays:(Oyouwhobelieve,fearAllahandgiveupwhatremains[duetoyou]ofinterest,ifyoushouldbebelievers.Andifyoudonot,thenbeinformedofawar[againstyou]fromAllahandHisMessenger.Butifyourepent,youmayhaveyourprincipal–[thus]youdonowrong,norareyouwronged.)(2:278-279)

DevouringRibawouldwipeout thegoodnessofthewealth.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘No one devours Riba, except that he wouldbecomeneedy.’(IbnMajah)

TheonewhodevoursRiba,wouldbecastawayfrom the mercy of Allah. Jabir said that theMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘AllahcursestheonewhotakesRiba,andtheonewhogivesit,andtheonewhowrites(thecontract)andthetwowitnesseswhoattesttoit.’(Muslim)

AnotherproofwhichprovesitsevilisthewordsoftheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص:‘Ribahasseventythreelevels,theleastofwhichissimilartomarryingone’sownmother;andthegravestisequaltoviolatingaBeliever’shonor.’(Hakim)

Sinning inpublic,beautifying itandhoping that itwouldspreadamongthepeople.Allahsays:(Indeed, thosewho like that immorality should be spread [orpublicized]amongthosewhohavebelievedwillhaveapainfulpunishment in thisworldand theHereafter.AndAllah knowsandyoudonotknow.)(24:19)

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘AllofmyUmmah(nation)wouldbesafeguardedexceptthose

Committingsins.Allahsays:(Andwhateverstrikesyouofdisaster–itisforwhatyourhandshaveearned;butHepardonsmuch.)(42:30)

A’ishahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Towards theendof time, therewill be sinkholes, peoplewillbetransformed(intootherforms)andtheearthwillberaineduponbymeteors.Shesaid:‘OMessengerofAllah!Wouldwebedestroyed,andamongusarethepious?’Hesaid:‘Yes,ifevilbecomeswidespread.’(Sahihal-Jaami’)

AbuMusasaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Allah I would give the oppressormany chancestostophisoppression;butwhenHedoesdecidetopunishhim[forhisoppression]He Iwouldnotwaiveit.TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص thenrecited:(And thus is the seizure of your Lord when Heseizesthecitieswhiletheyarecommittingwrong.Indeed, His seizure is painful and severe. (Quran11:102)(Bukhari)TheCompanionoftheProphet,AliibnAbiTalib,said:‘Everyafflictionwhichbefalls(theUmmah)isduetoasin,anditwouldnotbewaivedunless(people)repent(toAllah).’

AndthePoetsaid:Sinsmakeoneheedless,andifonecontinuouslysins;hewouldbehumiliated.Whenoneabandonssins,hisheartwouldrevive,anditisbetterforhimtodisagreewithhiswhims.

Love of this life and desiring it above everything else;heedlessnessoftheHereafter,andnotpreparingforit.

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Whoever intends and seeks out the Hereafter, Allah wouldmake him content with what he has been given, and gathertogetherforhimhisaffairs(suchastobeeasyforhim),andhewouldattainmaterialsuccessdespitenotseekingit.

Announcing the sins that apersondidduring thenight,whileAllahhadscreened(othersfromknowingwhathehaddone)isalsoconsideredasopenlydisplayingsinfulacts.Thepersonwouldsay:‘Ididthisandthislastnight’.HewenttosleepwhileAllahhadscreenedhimandthenheuncoveredithimself.’(Bukhari)

Abdullah. Umar said that the Messenger ofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said tothem:‘O Muhajirun, (emigrants from Makkah to al-Madinah) youmay be afflicted by five things; God forbid that you shouldlive to see them. If fornication should become widespread,youshouldrealizethatthishasneverhappenedwithoutnewdiseasesbefallingthepeoplewhichtheir ancestors never suffered. If people shouldbegintocheatinweighingoutgoods,youshouldrealize that this has never happened withoutdrought and famine befalling the people, andtheir rulers oppressing them. If people shouldwithhold zakat, you should realize that this hasnever happenedwithout the rain being stoppedfromfalling;andwereitnotfortheanimals’sake,itwouldneverrainagain.Ifpeopleshouldbreaktheir covenant with Allah and His Messenger,youshould realize thathishasneverhappenedwithoutAllah sendinganenemyagainst them to take someof their possessions by force. If the leaders do not governaccordingtotheBookofAllah,youshouldrealizethatthishasneverhappenedwithoutAllahmaking them intogroupsandmakingthemfightoneanother.’(Hakim)

Forsaking and abandoning ordering with the good andforbidding theevil.This indeedwouldsafeguard theUmmah.Allahsays:(Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Children ofIsraelbythetongueofDavidandofJesus,thesonofMary.Thatwas because they disobeyed and [habitually] transgressed.Theyusednottopreventoneanotherfromthewrongdoingthattheydid.Howwretchedwasthatwhichtheyweredoing.

• Indeed, thosewho like that immoralityshouldbespread [orpublicized]among thosewhohavebelievedwillhaveapainfulpunishmentinthisworldandtheHereafter.

theyhadbelievedinAllahandtheProphetandinwhatwasrevealed tohim, theywouldnothave taken themasallies;butmanyofthemaredefiantlydisobedient.)

He thensaid: ‘Nay,byAllahyouwill command thegoodandforbid theevilandprevent theoppressor fromhisoppressionandmakehimabidebythetruth.’(AbuDawood)

Ridiculing the believers, spreading animosity againstthem,particularlythepiousamongthem.Allahsays:(IndeedAllahdefendsthosewhohavebelieved.Indeed,Allahdoesnotlikethetreacherousandungrateful.)(22:38)

AbuHurairahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص saidthatAllahsays:‘Whoeverharmsawali(piousman)ofmine,Ihavedeclaredwaragainsthim.’(Bukhari)

Ridiculing believers, would possibly lead one toridiculing theDeen ofAllah, whichwould cast apersonoutofthefoldsofIslam.Allahsays:(And if you ask them, they will surely say, ‘Wewereonlyconversingandplaying.’Say,‘IsitAllahandHisversesandHisMessengerthatyouweremocking?Makenoexcuse;youhavedisbelieved[i.e. rejected faith]after yourbelief. IfWepardonone factionof you – We will punish another faction because they werecriminals.)(9:65-66)

Showingcontempttopeople,belittlingandmockingthem. Allahsays:(Thosewho criticize the pious among the believers concerningwhattheygiveincharityandtheoneswhofindnothingtospendexcepttheireffort,sotheyridiculethem[aswell]—Allahwillridiculetheminreturn,andtheywillhaveapainfulpunishment.)(9:79)

TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Do not show contempt to your brother, for Allah may havemercyonhim,andafflictyou.’(Tirmidhi)

Youseemanyofthembecomingalliesofthosewhodisbelieved.HowwretchedisthatwhichtheyhaveputforthforthemselvesinthatAllahhasbecomeangrywiththem,andinthepunishmenttheywillabideeternally.AndiftheyhadbelievedinAllahandtheProphetand inwhatwasrevealedtohim, theywouldnothave taken them as allies; but many of them are defiantlydisobedient.)(5:78-81)

Abu Bakr said: ‘O people you read this verse: (O you whobelieve,uponyou is [theresponsibility for]yourselves.Thosewhohavegoneastraywillnotharmyouwhenyouhavebeenguided.(Qur’an5:105))andIhaveheardtheMessengerofAllah

:say ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص ‘If people see theoppressoroppressingothers, and do not stop him, the punishment ofAllahwouldencompassthemall.’(Tirmidthi)

Showing love to sinners (i.e., thosedisobedient to Allah), aligning himself withthem,andexertingone’sefforttosupportthem.Abdullah. Masood said that the Messenger ofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Oneofthefirstsins[of the]ChildrenofIsrael,was thatapersonwouldmeetanotherpersonandhewouldsay:‘Osoandso,fearAllahandstopdoingwhateveryouaredoingofsin!Forit

isnotlawfulforyou.’Hewouldthenmeethimthenextday,and[thefactthathewasstillsinningfromthepreviousdaywouldnotpreventhimfrom]eating,drinkingandsittingwithhim.Whentheydidthis,Allahhardenedtheirhearts(thosewhosinnedandthosewhodidnot).Hethenrecited:(Cursed were those who disbelieved among the Childrenof Israel by the tongue of David and of Jesus, the son ofMary. That was because they disobeyed and [habitually]transgressed.Theyusednottopreventoneanotherfromthewrongdoingthattheydid.Howwretchedwasthatwhichtheyweredoing.Youseemanyofthembecomingalliesofthosewho disbelieved... SoWecausedtheearthtoswallowhimand his dwelling place. Then he hadnogrouporparty tohelphimagainstAllah, nor was he one of those whocouldsavethemselves.)(28:79-81)

Remember when his people said to him: ‘Donotexultwithriches,beingungrateful toAllah.Verily,Allahlikesnotthosewhoexult.Butseek,with thatwealthwhichAllah has bestowedonyou, thehomeof theHereafter,andforgetnot

yourportionof(lawful)enjoymentinthisworld;anddogoodasAllahhasbeengoodtoyou,andseeknotmischiefintheland.Verily,Allah likesnot thosewhocommitgreatcrimesandarecorruptors.

Hesaid:‘ThishasbeengiventomeonlybecauseoftheknowledgeIpossess.’Did he not know thatAllahhaddestroyedbeforehimgenerations; men who werestronger thanhim inmightand

to forgivehisdebt,or to feedhishunger.That Iwalkwithabrotherregardingoneofhisneedsismorebelovedtomethansecludingmyselfforworshipinmymosque(inMedina)foramonth.Whoevercontainshisanger,thenAllahwillconcealhisfaults.Whoeversuppresseshis rage,even thoughhecouldactuponhisangerifhewished,thenAllahwillsecurehishearton theDayofResurrection.Whoeverwalkswithhisbrotherregarding a need until he suffices it for him, thenAllah theExalted will make his footing firm across the bridge on thedaywhenpeoplewillslip.(i.e.theDayofResurrectionontheSiraat[bridge]).”(Al-Mu’jamal-Awsat)

Allah,theExalted,hasclarifiedthegreatrewardforhimwhodoesthesethingspurelyforHissake.Allahsays:(And theygive food in spiteof love for it to theneedy,theorphan,andthecaptive,[saying]“Wefeedyouonly for the countenanceofAllah.Wewishnotfromyourewardorgratitude.Indeed,WefearfromourRubbaDayaustereanddistressful.SoAllahwillprotectthemfromtheevilofthatDayandgivethemradianceandhappiness.Andwillrewardthemforwhattheypatientlyenduredwithagardenandsilkengarments.)(76:9-12)

Obedience is one way in which we can show gratitude toAllah for theperfect shape inwhichHehascreatedusandthehealth thatHehasbestowedupon.Therefore,apersonshouldsafeguardhissightfromlookingatanythingunlawful;andsafeguardhishearingfromlisteningtoanythingunlawful,andsafeguardhistonguefrombackbiting,spreadingrumors,lying,andothereviltalk.Heshouldnotusehisfeettowalktoanunlawfulthing;heshouldnotusehishandstodounlawfulthings,norshouldhefallshortindoinggoodworkswiththem.Allahsays:(Indeed,thehearing,thesightandtheheart—ofeachofthese,onewillbequestioned.)(17:36)

OslaveofAllahknowthattheOneWhobestowedthesefavorsuponyoucanindeedtakethemawayfromyou!YouarenotthemostpiousorthebestofthecreationofAllahexceptifyoufearHimanddorighteousdeeds.Allahsays:(O mankind, indeed We have created you from male andfemaleandmadeyoupeoplesandtribesthatyoumayknowone another. Verily, the most honorable among you, in thesight ofAllah, is he who is themost righteous among you.Indeed,Allahisall-Knowingandall-Aware.)(49:13)

Allahhasshownthecorrectmethodtosafeguard thefavorsandpreservethem.Allahsays:(And [remember]whenyourRubbproclaimed,‘Ifyouaregrateful, Iwillsurelygiveyoumore;but if you deny, indeed, My punishment issevere.)(14:7)

TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:“Allahdoesnotbestowagraceuponaslaveandhesays: ‘Alhamdulilah’ (i.e. all praise isdue toAllah) except the praise he gave is better thanwhathetook(i.e.thegracewhichAllahbestoweduponhim).”(IbnMajah)

OnecanshowgratitudeandpraiseAllahinmatterspertainingtomoneybygivingoutitscompulsoryandpraiseworthyrightstothepoorandneedy.Allahsays:(And those within whose wealth is a known right. For thepetitionerandthedeprived.)(70:24-25)

Heshouldalsoknowthatthereareotherrightsinone’swealthbesidestheZakah(poor-due).Soheshouldfeedthepoorandhungry,clothehimwhohasnoclothing,andtreattheill,helpothers,andpayoffdebts.TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:“Themost beloved people toAllah are thosewho aremostbeneficial to others. The most beloved deed to Allah is tomake aMuslim happy, or to remove one of his troubles, or

Andhehadsuchfruit,sohesaidtohiscompanionwhilehewas conversingwith him, ‘I amgreater than you inwealthandmightierinnumbersofmen.”Andheenteredhisgardenwhilehewasunjusttohimself.Hesaid,“Idonotthinkthatthiswillperish–ever.AndIdonotthinktheHourwillcometopass.AndevenifIshouldbebroughtbacktomyRubb,Iwillsurelyfindbetterthanthisasareturn.

Hiscompanionsaidtohimwhilehewasconversingwithhim,‘HaveyoudisbelievedinHewhocreatedyou from dust and then from a sperm-drop andthenproportionedyouasaman?

But as forme, He isAllah,myRubb and I donot associate with my Rubb anyone.And whydid you, when you entered your garden, notsay,‘WhatAllahwilledhasoccurred;thereisnopowerexceptinAllah?

Although you see me less than you in wealthand children. Itmaybe thatmyRubbwill givemebetterthanyourgardenandwillsenduponitacalamityfromtheskyanditwillbecomeasmooth,dustyground.Oritswaterwillbecomesunken[into theearth],soyouwouldneverbeabletoseekit.

Andhis fruitswereencompassed [by ruin],sohebegan toturnhishandsabout[indismay]overwhathehadspentonit,whileithadcollapseduponitstrellises,andsaid,“Oh,IwishIhadnotassociatedwithmyRubbanyone.)(18:31-42)

A person should not use the natural faculties that Allahhas bestowed upon him, from wisdom and intelligence, to

support evil or fight the truth. He should usethese natural faculties in things which wouldbenefithiminthislifeandintheHereafter.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:“ApersonwouldnotmovehisfeetontheDayofResurrectionuntilheisaskedabouthislifeandhowhespent it,andabouthisknowledgeandhowheusedit,andabouthismoney–whereheearneditfromandhowhespentit,andhisbodyandhowheusedit.”(Tirmidhi)

A person should safeguard his private parts,from doing anything unlawful. He should not

relievehissexualanxietyexceptwithhiswife.Allahsays:(And they who guard their private parts, except from theirwives or those that their right hands possess, for indeed,theywillnotbeblamed.Butwhoeverseeksbeyondthat,thenthosearethetransgressors.)(23:5-7)

A believer should praiseAllah I forwhat he has bestoweduponhimofgracesandshouldbegratefultoHim.Heshouldnot praise other thanAllah for these bounties and graces.PraisingotherthanAllahforthesethingswouldindeedincuraseverepunishment.Allahsays:(Andpresenttothemanexampleof twomen:Wegrantedtooneofthemtwogardensofgrapevines,andWeborderedthem

BelievershouldshowhisgratitudetoAllahfortheNi’mah(bounty and grace) of Islam which Allah has bestowed uponhim,byfulfillingthefollowing:

BeingmindfulandobservantofAllah Iatall times.ThisisthelevelofIhsaanonwhichtheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

“IhsaanistoworshipAllahasifyoucanseeHim;butalthoughyoucannotseeHim,Heseesyou.”(Bukhari)

IbnAb’bassaid:‘OnedayIwasridingbehindtheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص andhesaidtome,“Oyoungman,Ishallteachyousomewords[ofadvice].BemindfulofAllahandAllahwillprotectyou.BemindfulofAllahandyouwillfindhiminfrontofyou.Ifyouask,askofAllah.Ifyouseekhelp,seekhelpfromAllah.Knowthatifthepeopleweretogathertobenefityouwithsomething,theywouldnotbeabletobenefityouexceptwithwhatAllahhasalreadydecreedforyou.Andthatiftheyweretogathertoharmyouwithsomething,theywouldnotbeabletoharmyouexceptwithwhatAllahhasalreadydecreedagainstyou.Thepenshavebeenliftedandthepageshavedried.(Tirmithi)

Abandoning the unlawful and prohibited things, andobservingthecompulsoryduties,especiallycongregationalprayerintheMasjid,exceptifapersonhasavalidexcusefor not doing so.This indeed is the first thingwhichmanwouldbequestionedaboutontheDayofResurrection.Ifitisacceptedallhisdeedswouldbeaccepted.TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:“IndeedthefirstthingaslaveofAllahwouldbequestionedabout on the Day of Resurrection is his prayer. ThebesttypeoffastingisthefastingofDawoodu.Abdullah.AmrsaidthattheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص wasinformedthatIsaid:‘ByAllah,Iwillfastthroughoutthedays,andperformprayerthroughoutthenightsaslongasIlive.’Isaidtohim:‘Iransomyouwithmyfatherandmother,Ihavepledgedtodoit!’Heملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Youwillnotbeabletofulfillthat,sofast(somedays)anddonotfastothers,performprayersandgotosleep,andfastthreedaysfromeverymonth;forindeedthegooddeedismultipliedbytenfold…and(ifyoufastthreedayseverymonth)thiswouldbesimilartofastingawholeyear.’

Isaid:‘Icanwithstandmorethanthat!’Hesaid:‘(then) fast a day andmissthe next; this is the fast ofDawoodu,anditisthebesttypeoffasting.’Isaid:‘Icanwithstandmorethanthat.’Heملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Thereisnothingbetterthanthat.’(Bukhari)

IftheMuslimonlyattainstheloveofAllahbyobservingthesupererogatoryactsofworship,thatwouldbesufficient.TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Whosoever shows enmity to a wali (pious servant) ofMine,then I have declaredwar against him.AndMy servant doesnotdrawnear toMewithanythingmorebeloved toMe thanthereligiousdutiesIhaveobligateduponhim.AndMyservantcontinuestodrawneartomewithsupererogatorydeedsuntilI lovehim.WhenI lovehim,Ibecomehishearingwithwhichhehears,andhissightwithwhichhesees,andhishandwithwhichhestrikes,andhisfootwithwhichhewalks.Werehetoask[something]ofMe,Iwouldsurelygiveittohim;andwerehetoseekrefugewithMe,Iwouldsurelygranthimrefuge.’(Bukhari)

madeattheendofthenight(generallybeforesleeping).TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص wouldkeenlyobservethe Witr prayer, and would even observe itwhilehewastraveling,eventhoughonewouldfacenumeroushardshipswhile traveling.Theleast it canbeperformed isone rak’ah (unit).

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:“Witrisarightoneshouldobserve,sowhoeverwishescanperformwitrasfiveunits.Whoeverwishescanobserveitasthreeunits,andwhoeverwishescanperformonerakah(unit).”(IbnHib’ban)

Oneshouldobservefastingsupererogatoryfasts;likefastingMondaysandThursdays,andthewhitedaysofeverymonthwhich are the thirteenth till the fifteenth. One should alsoobservefastonthedayofArafah,andthedayofAashoorawithadaybeforeorafterit.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:“NoslavefastsadayforthesakeofAllah,butAllahwoulddistancehimfromtheFireonaccountofthatday(whichhefasted)adistanceofseventyyears.”(Muslim)

displeased with Him while he is in a state of poverty orsickness;isdescribedthusbyAllah:(Andof the people is hewhoworshipsAllah on an edge.Ifheistouchedbygood,heisreassuredbyit;but ifheisstruckbytrial,heturnsonhisface[totheotherdirection].Hehas lost [this]worldand theHereafter.That iswhat isthemanifestloss.)(22:11)

If the slave knows that allmatters are in the hands ofAllahalone,Whohasnopartner,andthatHeisthedisposerofaffairsinthedominionandofallthecreaturestherein.HeonlyordainsthatwhichisgoodandthatwhichisinthebestinterestofHiscreation.We should know thatAllah is the onlyOnewhoextendsbenefitandcausesharm,andtheOnewho cures, and protects, theOneWhogivesandwithholds.Allahsays:(AndifAllahshouldtouchyouwithadversity,thereisnoremoverofitexceptHim;andifHeintendsforyougood,thenthereisnorepellerofHisbounty.HecausesittoreachwhomHewillsofHisslaves.AndHeistheForgiving,theMerciful.)(10:107)

If the slave knows this with certainty andstrengthens his faith, depending solely uponAllah,andseeking refugewithHimwhile fearingHispunishment,andhopingforHisreward,andbountiesandgraces (in this life) while doing necessary (and appropriate)thingstoattainthebountiesofAllah.Allahsays:(AndwhoeverreliesuponAllah–thenHeissufficientforhim.)(65:3)

Theslaveisweakanddoesnotknowwhatholdsgoodnessforhim.Allahsays:(Butperhapsyouhateathinganditisgoodforyou;andperhapsyouloveathingandit isbadforyou.AndAllahknows,whileyouknownot.)(2:216)

SeekingAllah’srewardforpatienceoverthatwhichAllahhasordained,whethercalamitiesorafflictionsinhimself,hisfamilyorwealth.Allahsays:

The most effective remedy to prevent calamities is totrulybelieveintheDivineDecree(QadaandQadar–thesixthpillar of Iman). It is a key factor in lessening the effects ofcalamitieswhichmaybefall thebeliever.With this importantbelief,thebelieverwouldsafeguardandprotecthimselffrommanypsychologicaldiseasesanddisorderswhichafflictmanypeople.Whenthebelieverbelievesthatnothingwouldharmhim except that which has been preordained, he would becontentwithwhatAllahhaspreordained.Allahsays:(No disaster strikes upon the earth or among yourselvesexcept that it is ina registerbeforeWebring it intobeing–

indeed that, forAllah, iseasy. Inorder thatyoudo not despair over what has eluded you andnotexult[inpride]overwhatHehasgivenyou.AndAllah does not like every self-deludedandboastfulone.)(57:22-23)

TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:“Thestrongbeliever1isbetterandmorebelovedto Allah than the weak believer; and in boththereisgoodness2.Bekeenonacquiringthingswhichwouldbenefit you,andseek thehelpofAllah,anddonotbecomelazyindoingactsofworship. If something harms you, do not say:

‘HadIdonethis,thiswouldnothavehappened’.Butinsteadsay: ‘Allah has willed, and whatever He wills will come topass;indeedsaying(theword)‘if’3wouldopenthedoorstoSatan.”(Muslim)

The believer must be content with what his Rubb hasordained inevery instance;whetherhe is healthyor sick,rich or poor. The onewho is contentwith hisRubbwhilehe ishealthy, richand inagoodstateofaffairsonly,and

1- “Strong” in this Hadeeth refers to the persistence of the believer in acquir-ing things which would benefit him in the Hereafter. 2- Since both are believers, so there is goodness in them. 3- This is in regards to one who says, 'if' while believing with certainty that he could have changed the state of affairs.

(AndWewillsurelytestyouwithsomethingoffearandhungerandalossofwealthandlivesandfruits,butgivegoodtidingstothepatient.Who,whendisasterstrikesthem,say,‘IndeedwebelongtoAllah,andindeedtoHimweshallreturn.’ThosearetheonesuponwhomareblessingsfromtheirRubbandmercy.Anditisthosewhoarethe[rightly]guided.)(2:155-157)

TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:“Noslavesays:

يا منها ]إنا لله وإنا إلييه رياجعون[ اللهم أجرني يف مصيبيتي وأخلف ل خي

'In'naa lil'laaheewa in'naa ilai'heera'jioon.Allahum'ma-jurneefee mo'seeba-tee wukh-luf'lee khairan minhaa'4 when he isafflictedorhitwithacalamity,except thatAllahwouldrewardhim,andreplaceit(i.e.whathelost)withbetter.’

ImamIbnal-Qayyim,mayAllahhavemercyonhim,said:‘Thiswordisthemostbeneficialthingthatanafflictedpersoncansay,inthislifeandthehereafter,foritcontainstwogreatfundamentals.Ifapersonknowsandfulfillsthemhewouldberelievedfromtheaffliction.

Thefirst:Theslave,hisfamily,andhiswealthbelongtoAllah,theExalted.Theyareonlyundertheslave’spossessionasaloan, so if He takes themaway from him, it is similar to theownertakingbackhisloaneditems.

The second: The slave will finally return toAllah, and hewould–withoutdoubt-leavethisworldbehindhim.Hewouldbe brought forth before Allah alone, as he was created,without any family, money or supporters. He would standbeforeAllahwithhisgoodandbaddeeds.Therefore,ifthisisthebeginningoftheslaveandhisend,howcanonerejoiceover something he attains, or despair over something heloses.Whenapersonpondershisbeginningandhisend;thisindeedisagreatremedyforthisaffliction.’5

Knowingtheinsignificanceofthisworld.Sahl.Sa’dsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص passedbyDhul-Hulaifahandsawadecayingbloatedsheepwhoselegwasliftedup,andheملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Is this sheepworthless to itsmaster?’ theCompanions said:‘Yes!’Heملسو هيلع هللا ىلص thensaid:‘BytheOneinWhosehandsismylife,thisworldismoreworthlesstoAllahthanthisanimaltoitsmaster!Werethelifeofthisworldtoequaleventhewingofamosquito,Hewouldnothavegiventhedisbelieverevenadrinkofwater.’(Haakim)

Knowingthatmanwouldnotexitthisworlduntilhe has completed the assigned termwhichAllahhasassignedforhiminthislife.TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Jibreelhas just informedme thatnosoulwouldexitthisworlduntilitcompletestheassignedtermAllahhasassignedforit,andreceivetheprovisionsAllahhasordainedfor it.Soseekanappropriateliving.Letnotadiresituationforceyoutoseekitthroughunlawfulmeans, forAllahwouldgrant toanindividualwhoobeysHim.’(Mu’jamal-Kabeer)

Imam Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, mentioned some additional remedies, of which are:

Oneshouldtakeheedfromthoseuponwhomtrialshavebefallen.He should know that he is not the only person thatis facedwithacalamity. Ifhewere tosearch in theworldhewouldconcludethatcalamitiesoccurdueto,missingabelovedopportunityorbefallingofadisliked thing.Heshouldkeep inmindthatthisworldisarealmwhereinonewouldbetriedandtested.A placewherein one laughs a little and cries a lot; aplacewhereinoneishappyatcertainoccasionsandunhappyat others; a place wherein one has some fun and would bepreventedfrommanyotherthings.Allahsays:(Verily,Wehavecreatedmanintoil.)(90:4)

PerformingSalah(i.e.,prayers).Allahsays:(Andseekhelpthroughpatienceandprayer.)(2:45)WheneverasituationthatconcernedtheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص befellhim,hewouldrushtoperformprayers.Hewouldsay:‘OBilalcalltheIqamahforprayer,andrelieveuswithit.’(AbuDawood)

Thinkingwell ofAllah,andnot showingdiscontent.AbuHurairahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:“IndeedAllah says: ‘I am capable of doing withmy slave whathethinksofMe;ifhewishesgood,hewouldhavethat,andifhewishesbad,hewouldhavethat.’”(IbnHib’ban)

RememberingAllah excessively. By doingthis,apersonwouldbe relieved fromcalamitiesand afflictions and it would strengthen his faith.Allahsays:(ThosewhobelieveandwhoseheartsareassuredbytheremembranceofAllah.Unquestionably,bytheremembranceofAllahheartsareassured.)(13:28)

SupplicatingAllahexcessively.Allahsays:(IsHe [notbest]whoresponds to thedesperateonewhenhecallsuponHimandremovesevilandmakesyouinheritorsoftheearth?Isthereadeity

withAllah?Littledoyouremember.)(27:62)Allahsays:(AndyourRubbsays,“CalluponMe;Iwillrespondtoyou.”Indeed,thosewhodisdainMyworshipwillenterHellhumiliated.)(40:60)

Tobelievethatcalamitiesareaccompaniedwithrelief,andthathardshipsareaccompaniedwithease.Allahsays:(Indeed,withhardship[willbe]ease.)(94:6)Apoetsaid:Inadiresituation,everythingclosedinaroundme(Suddenly)IwasrelievedandIthoughtnoreliefwouldcometome

Knowingthelifeinthisworldisonlyforashort-term.Itisnoteverlasting,foreverythingwillbedestroyed.Allahsays:

seeks the reward ofAllah.AbuMusaal-Ash’ari said that theMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Whenthechildofabelieverdies,Allahwouldsaytotheangels:‘YouhavetakenthesoulofMyslave’schild?’Theywouldsay:‘Yes.’Allahwouldsaytothem:‘Youhavetakentheloveofhisheart?’Theywouldsay: ‘Yes.’Hewouldask them: ‘WhatdidMyslave say?’Theywould say: ‘Hehas indeedpraised youandproclaimedthathebelongstoYouandthathewillreturntoYou.’Allahwouldsaytotheangels:‘BuildforhimahouseinJannahandcallitthehouseofPraise.’(IbnHibban)

AbuSa’eedal-KhudrisaidthattheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘NoMuslim isafflictedwithexhaustion,sickness,worry, sorrow, harm or pain; even a prickwhichharmshim,exceptAllahwouldexpiatehissinsonaccountofthat.’(Bukhari)

He should know that bearing patiently andseeking the reward ofAllah during calamities isindeedoneof thecharacteristicsof thebelieversandacausewithwhichonewouldenterJannah.Allahsays:(AndcertainlyWeshalltryyouuntilWedistinguishthose of you who strive hard (for the cause ofAllah) and the steadfast, and till We test yourrecord.)(47:31)

IbnAbbassaidthathesaidtosomeofhiscompanions:‘ShallInotshowyouawomanfromthewomenofJannah?’Theysaid:‘Certainly!’Hesaid:‘ThisblackwomancametotheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص andsaidtohim:‘Ihaveepilepticseizures,andImaybecomeuncoveredonaccountofit.SosupplicateAllahforme(i.e.torelievemefromthisdisease).’TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Ifyouwish,bearpatiently,andyouwouldbegrantedJannah.Andifyouwish,IwillsupplicateAllah(torelieveyoufromthisdisease).’Shethensaid:‘Iwillbearpatiently,butIwouldbecomeuncovered,sosupplicateAllahthatIdonotbecomeuncovered(onaccountofepilepticseizures).’SotheMessengerofAllah(Bukhari)her.’forAllahsupplicated ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص

Allahsays:(Ifawoundshouldtouchyou-therehasalreadytouchedthe[opposing]peopleawoundsimilartoit.)(3:140)

Abdullah.Masoodsaid:‘There is a sad occasion for every happy occasion.There isneverahomethatisfilledwithjoyatalltimesbutratherisfilledwithsadnessatanothertime.’

ThePoetsaid:IknowthatnocalamitybefallsmeExceptthatsomeonebeforemewasalsohitbyit

One should ponder the calamity that hasbefallenhim,andbegrateful toAllahandpraiseHimthatitwasnotgreaterthanwhatitis,andthatitwasnotinhisDeen.Anythingamanlosesfromthematerialisticthingsinthislifewouldnotcausetrueharm,exceptifthecalamityisinhisDeen.HeshouldalsobegratefultoAllahforallothergraceshehasbeengiven.

ThelegofUrwah.az-Zubairwasamputatedandhissonwaskilledonthesameday,andhesaid:‘OAllah,allthepraisebelongstoYoualone.Ifyouhave taken fromMe (a thing), indeedYou have

givenme,ifYouhaveafflictedmewithacalamity,Youcertainlyhavehealedme.Youhavegrantedmefourlimbs,andYouhavetakenoneaway,andYouhavegrantedme fourchildrenandhavetakenoneaway.’

One should know that despondency and showingdissatisfaction to the decree ofAllah would anger Him, andpleaseSatanandamusetheenemiesandhurtfriends.Itwouldalsonullifyone’sreward,andweakenhim.IfhebearspatientlyandseekstherewardofAllah,hewouldpleasehisRubb,andhumiliateSatan,anddismayhisenemyandpleasehisfriend.

He should consider the calamities that befall him anopportunitytoaccumulategooddeeds,ifhebearspatientlyand

andHell-Firehasbeensurroundedbylustsanddesires.’(Muslim)

Thisdoesnotmeanthatmanshouldbelikeaninanimatebeingwhodoesnothavefeelings,andthathedoesnotshowsomeofhisnaturalemotions.Whatisprohibitedisthatonebecomedespondent, angryandunsatisfiedwith thedecreesofAllah.Anas.Maliksaid:‘WeenteredwiththeMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص uponAbuSaif,theblacksmith,whosewifewasthemilkmotherofIbraheem–thesonof theProphet-so theProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص held Ibraheem,kissedhimandsmelledhim.Thereafterweentereduponhimwhilehewasdying,andtheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص wept.Abdurrahman.Auf said: ‘And youOMessengerofAllah (cryaswell)?’TheMessenger of Allah said: ‘O IbnAuf, this is a mercy, and Ifurthersay,Indeedtearscomeoutoftheeye,andtheheartissaddened,yetweonlysaythatwhichpleasesourRubb.IndeedwearesaddenedbyyourdepartureOIbraheem.’(Bukhari)

Usaamah.Zaidsaid:‘The daughter of the Messenger of Allah asked ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص theMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص tocometoher,sinceoneofhersonswasdying.SotheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص sentamessengertoconveyhissalamand tosay toher: ‘Indeed toAllahbelongswhathehasgivenandwhatHehastaken,andeverythinghasasettime,sohavepatienceandseektherewardofAllah.’

Shethenmadeanoathandinsistedthathecome,sohewentwhilehewasaccompaniedbySa’d.Ubaadah,Mu’aadth.Jabal,Ubai.Ka’b,Zaid.Thabit,andothermeny.Whentheyarrived,the child was given to the Prophetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص while he wasmovingslightlyandtheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص wept.Sa’dthensaid:‘OMessengerofAllahwhat is this (referring tohis tears)?Hesaid: ‘This isamercywhichAllahhasplaced in theheartsofHisslaves…IndeedAllahhasmercyonHismercifulslaves.’(Bukhari)

Apoetsaid:Letthedayspassbyastheyplease.BehappywithfateandthedecreeOncesomethinghappenswhichhasbeendecreed.Thereisnowayofstoppingit.

SuhaibsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Amazingisthematterofthebeliever!Everythingisbeneficialandrewardingtohim,andthisisonlyforthebeliever!Ifheisgracedwithamercy,hewouldbegratefultoAllah,anditwouldbe(rewarding)forhim.Ifheishitwithacalamity,hewouldbearpatientlyanditwouldbebetterforhim.’(Muslim)

One should keep in mind that even if despondencyovercomeshim, hewill have tobear patiently anyways.Thistypeofpatienceisnotpraiseworthy,anditsbearerwouldnotberewardedonaccountofit.

Mahmoud. Labeed reported that the Messenger ofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘IfAllahlovesapeople,Hewouldtestthem.Whoeverispatientwouldberewardedonaccountofhispatience,andwhoeverisdespondentwouldbechastisedonaccountofit.’(Ahmed)

HeshouldkeepinmindthattheOneWhoistestingandafflictinghimistheMostMerciful.Hedidnotcausetheafflictiontobefallhiminordertodestroyhim,nortopunishHim;rather,Heistestinghispatience,happinessinobeyingAllah,andbeliefinHim.HealsowantstohearHisslavecalluntoHim,andseekHishelpandbeseechHim.

Umar.al-Khattabapproached theProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص while thebootyfromabattlewasbroughtforth,andamongthemwasawomanwhowasbreast-feedingherchild.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Doyouthinkthatthiswomanwilltossherchildintothefire?’Thecompanionssaid:‘Howcanshe,whenshecannotletgoofhim?’TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘IndeedAllahismoremercifultoHisslavesthanthiswomanistoherchild.’(Bukhari)

Heshouldkeepinmindthatthemiseryinthislife,wouldin fact leadhim to livinga life of happiness in theHereafter.And Happiness in this life would lead him to misery in theHereafter.Thereforetomovefromastageoftemporarymiserytoapermanent stateof joyandhappiness isbetter than theopposite.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Jannah(heavenlyabode)hasbeensurroundedbyhardships,

Icanadhereto!’TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘KeepyourtonguemoistwiththeremembranceofAllah.’(Tirmithi)

AllahremembershewhoismindfulofHim.Allahsays:‘I am just as My slave thinks I am1, and I am with him if heremembersMe2.IfheremembersMeinhimself,Itoorememberhim;and ifhe remembersMe inagroupofpeople I rememberhiminagroupthatisbetterthanthem;andifhecomesonespannearertoMe,Igoonecubitnearertohim;andifhecomesonecubitnearertoMe,Igoadistanceoftwooutstretchedarmsnearertohim;andifhecomestoMewalking,Igotohimrunning.’(Bukhari)

AllahhasmentionedinHisBookthatcontinuouslyrememberingHimisacauseforliftingandwaivingcalamitiesaftertheyhavebefallen.Allahsays:(AndYounuswasalsooneoftheMessengers.Whenhefledtotheladenship,hecastlotsandlost.Thenthewhaleswallowedhim,andhewasblameworthy.HadhenotbeenofthosewhoglorifyGod,hewouldcertainlyhavestayedinitsbelly.)(37:139-144)

Continuously remembering Allah is a cause for one’ssupplicationtobeacceptedbyAllah,andittooisafortificationwhichwouldsafeguardtheslave.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘IndeedAllahinspiredYahya.ZakariyyahwithfivewordswhichHeorderedhimwithandthechildrenofIsrael.Itseemedthathehaddelayed conveying thismessage to them, soEesa said to him:‘Allahhasorderedyoutoconveytoyourpeoplefivewordswhichyoushouldapply,soeitheryouconveyittothem,orIwillconveyittothem!’Hesaid:‘OEesa,donot,forIfearthatifyouconveythem,Allahwillpunishme,ortheearthwillswallowme.

SohegatheredthechildrenofIsraelintheMasjidinJerusalem,anditbecamepacked,untiltheysatinthewindowsills,hethenaddressedthemsaying:

1- i.e. if he seeks forgiveness, Allah will forgive Him, if hopes for Allah's mer-cy, Allah will grant it to him. 2- Allah would bestow upon him mercy, success and guidance when he men-tions Allah.

Continuously recitingQur’an, forShaytanflees fromthehouseinwhichtheQur’anisrecited.

AbuHurairahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Donotmakeyourhousesgraveyards.IndeedSatanfleesfromthehouseinwhichthechapterofAl-Baqarahisrecited.’(Muslim)

Saying‘Bismillah’(IbeginwiththenameofAllah)wheneverdoinganything, for thiswouldbeameansofprotection fromSatan.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘TheprotectivebarrierthatpreventstheJinnfromlookingattheprivatepartsofthechildrenofAdamistosay‘Bismillah’.’(Tirmidhi)

TosupplicateAllahforgoodnesswhenheseeshimself,hisfamilyorchildrenexcellingingoodness;suchastosay,‘OAllahgranthimofYourbounty,andprotecthimfromharm’ortosay:‘Mashallahtabaarakal-laah’(WhatAllahwills[comestopass],mayAllahblessitforyou)

ToseekrefugewithAllahtoprotecthimselfandhisfamilyandchildren,fromallevils.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص usedtodothisforal-Hasanandal-Husain.Hewouldsay:‘YourfatherwoulddothiswithIsma’eelandIshaaq,

»أعيذكما بكلمات الله التامة ، من كل شيطان وهامة ، ومن كل عي المة«

'A'eedthukumabikalimaatil'laahit-taam'maatminkullishaytaaninwahaa'ma'tinwaminkulli'aininlaa'ma.’(AbuDawud)

Meaning:IseekrefugeforbothofyouintheperfectwordsofAllahfromeverydevilandeverypoisonousthingandfromtheevileyewhichinfluences.

Being mindful of Allah at all times, and uttering Dhikr(remembrance).Allahsays:(ThereforerememberMe,sothatImayrememberyou,andbegratefultoMeanddonotbeungrateful.)(2:152)

Abdullah.BishrsaidthatamansaidtotheMessengerofAllah:‘TheShari’ahlawsaremany,soinformmeofsomethingwhich

RemembranceofAllahwould suffice if onecannot recite theQur’an.Abdullah.AbiO’faa,mayAllah be pleasedwith him,said: ‘a man came to the Prophet of Allah and ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: ‘OMessengerofAllah, I cannotmemorize theQur’an, so teachmesomethingwhichwouldsufficeme.Hesaid:‘Say: Subhanaalah (Far removed is Allah from everyimperfection), Alhadmulilah (All praise is due to Allah), Laailaahail’laaAllah(ThereisnothingworthyofbeingworshippedexceptAllahalone),AllahuAkbar(Allahisthegreatest)andLaahawlawalaaquwatail’laabil’laah(Nosituationwillchangetoabetterone,noristherestrength,withoutthewillofAllah).’

Themansaid:‘ThisisforAllah…whatisforme?’Heملسو هيلع هللا ىلص saidمني واهدني وعافني وارزقني ريب اغفر ل ويارحي

'OAllah forgive me, and havemercy onme, guide me andpardonme,andprovideme.'

When [the man] stood up, he made a sign with his hand(indicatingthathehadearneda lot).TheMessengerofAllahDawud)(Abugoodness.’withfilledwerehands‘Hissaid: ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص

Remembrance of Allah would keep Shaytan away andsafeguardhimfromthewhisperingofShaytan.

AbuHurairahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: ‘Shaytanwould tie three knots at aman’s headwhile he isasleep,andwouldsayyouhavealongnightsosleep.WhenhewakesupandmentionsthenameofAllah,oneknotwouldbeundone.Andifheperformswudhu,anotherwouldbeundone.Andifheprays,thelastknotwouldbeundone,andhewouldbecome very energetic and would have a good character,otherwisehewouldbeofbadcharacterandlazy.’(Bukhari)

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص informedusofthepunishmentoftheonewhostaysawayfromthedhikrofAllah,saying:(But whosoever turns away fromMy remembrance He shallsurelyhaveastraitenedlife,andWewillgatherhimontheDayofResurrectionblind.)(20:124)

‘IndeedAllahhasorderedmetoconveytoyoufivewordswhichyoushouldapply;first,donotassociateanypartnerswithAllah,fortheexampleoftheonewhoassociatespartnerswithAllahislikeamanwhoboughtaslavewithhisowngoldandsilver,andthenhousedhiminhishouseandsaidtohim:‘workandbringmetheproceeds’.Yethewasworkingandgivingtheproceedsto someone other than hismaster. Sowho of youwould bepleasedwithhisslaveifhedoesthis?Allah,hascreatedyou,andprovidedforyousodonotassociateanypartnerswithhim.

Whenyouperformprayers,donotlookabout,forAllahwouldlookatHisslaveaslongashedoesnotturnaboutinhisprayer.

Icommandyoutofast,andtheexampleofthatislikeamaninagroupwhohasapouchofmusk,everyonewouldwanttosmellitsscents,andfastingismorebeautifultoAllahthanthescentofmusk.

Iorderyoutogiveoutcharity,andtheexampleofthatislikeamanwhowas captured by the enemy.They tied his handtohisneck,andbroughthimforwardtobebeheaded,andhesaid to them,will youallowme to ransommyself fromyou?Hegavethemalittleandalot,untilheransomedhimselffromthem,soIorderyoutorememberAllahalot.AndtheexampleoftheremembranceofAllahislikeamanwhowaschasedbytheenemy,andhethencametoafortifiedfortress,andstayedthereinandsavedhimselffromtheenemy.Likewise,theslavewouldnotbesavedfromSatanunlessheremembersAllah.’

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص thensaid:‘Icommandyouwithfivethings;Allahhasorderedmetostaywith the general assembly of Muslims, to listen and obey,emigratetothelandsofIslam,andJihadinthepathofAllah.

Whoeverdeviates from thegeneralassemblyofMuslims thedistanceof a cubit,would haveexited the folds ofFaith andIslam,andwhoevercallswith theDa’wahof Jaahiliyahhe isfromthefueloftheFire.

ItwassaidOMessengerofAllah,evenifhefasts,andprays.Hesaid:‘evenifhefastsandprays’.SocallpeopletothepathofAllah,

• There is nothingworthyof beingworshippedexceptAllah,whohasnopartner, toHimbelongs theDominionandPraiseandHe isallcapableoverallthings.

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: ‘Wouldoneof younotbeable togainathousandrewardsaday?Say‘Subhanallah’ahundredtimes,andathousandrewardswouldberecordedforyouandathousandsinswouldbeeffaced(fromyourrecord).’(Muslim)

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘WhoeverasksAllahtoexaltmymentionandrendermesafefromeveryderogatorything,Allahwouldgivehimtenrewardsandeffacetensins(fromhisrecord).’(IbnHibban)

The Prophet :said ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص ‘Cleanliness is equal to half of faith,sayingAlhamdulilahwould fill the scale, (saying) Subhanallah andAlhamdulilahwould fill the space between the heavens and earth.Prayerisanoor(light)andcharityisanevidence(ofone’struefaith),patienceisradianceandtheQur’anisawitnessforyouoragainstyou.Allmengooutearlyinthemorningandsellthemselves,therebyfreeingthemselvesfromtheFire,ordoomthemselvestherein.’(Muslim)

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: ‘Shall I not inform you of awordwhichisofthetreasuresofJannah?Laahawlawalaaquwatail’laabil’laah.’(Bukhari)

Meaning: ‘NoconditionwouldchangefromastatetoanothernoristhereanypowerexceptbyAllah.’

Jowaire’yahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص leftherquarterswhileshewaspraying,andhereturnedwellafterthesunhadrisen.Hefoundthatshewas(still)sittingrememberingAllah.He then said: ‘Have you been in this state since I leftyou?’Shesaid:‘Yes!’TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص:‘Isaidfourwordsthreetimesandweretheytobeweighedwithallthatyouhavesaid,theywouldoutweighthem…

اته« لمي رشه ويمديادي كي زنيةي عي ا نيفسه وي لقه ويرضي ديدي خي مده عي اني الله ويبحي »سبحي

Subhanallah wa be'ham'de'he a'da'da khalqe'he wa re'daanaf'se'hewaze'nataarshe'hewame'daadaka'le'maatih.'

Meaning:IrepeatthedeclarationthatAllahisfarremovedfromeveryimperfection,anumberoftimesequaltothenumberofHiscreation,anduntilHeispleased,andequaltotheweightofhisThroneandequaltothenumberofHiswords.’

TheMessenger ofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: ‘Twowords,which areeasytosay,belovedtotheMost-Mercifulandheavyinthescales:

ظيم« مده، سبحاني الله العي »سبحاني الله ويبحي

'Subhanallahwabihamdihi,Subhanallahal-Adtheem.'(Bukhari)

Meaning: Far removed is Allah from every imperfectionand IbeginwithHispraise.Far removed isAllah fromeveryimperfectionandHeistheGreatest.’

The Messenger of Allah :said ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص ‘Whoever says:‘Subhanallahwabi’hamdihi’ [Farremoved isAllah fromeveryimperfection and I begin with His praise] 100 times everymorningoreveryevening,hissinswouldbeexpiatedeven iftheywereasmuchasthefoamofthesea.(Bukhari)

TheMessenger ofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said: ‘Whoever gets up atnightandsays:

مد دير الحي ء قي ىل كل شي مد ويهوي عي يكي ليه ليه امللك ويليه الحي »ال إليهي إال الله وحديه ال شي

ول ويال قوةي إال بالله« ويال حي يكبي ان الله وال إليه إال الله والله أ لله وسبحي

'Laailaahahil'laaAllahwahadahulaashareekalahu,lahulmulkwalahulhamdwahuwaalakul'leeshai'inqadeer.Alhamdulilahwa subhanal'laah wa laa ilaahah il'lal'laah wal'laaho akbarwa laa hawlawa laa quwata il'laa bil'laah’ and he then says:‘Al’laahum’ma ighfir’lee’ or he asksAllah whatever he wants,Allahwouldaccepthissupplication,and ifheperformswudhuandprays,hisprayerwouldbeaccepted.’(Bukhari)

Meaning: There is nothing worthy of being worshipped exceptAllah,whohasnopartner,toHimbelongstheDominionandPraiseandHeisallcapableoverallthings.AllpraiseisduetoAllah,farremovedisHefromeveryimperfection,thereisnothingworthyofbeingworshippedexceptAllah,andAllahistheGreatest,andnochangefromaconditiontoanotherconditioncanbeachieved,noristherestrengthexceptbyAllah.O’Allahforgiveme.

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘TosaySubhanallah,Alhamdulilah,andLaailaahail’laAllahwallaawhoakbarismorebelovedtomethenallthatthesunhasrisenover.’(Muslim)

AbuHurairahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Whoever wishes to be answered while in distress, shouldexcessivelysupplicateAllahintimesofease.’(Saheehal-Jaam’i)

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص saidintheHadeeththatisnarratedbyIbnAbbas:‘BemindfulofAllahintimesofease,andAllahwillaidyouintimesofhardship.’(Tirmithi)

TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Whoeverhelpsabelieverwho is inhardships,Allahwouldaidhim through the hardships of the Hereafter. Whoever aids apersonindebt,Allahwouldaidhiminthislifeandthehereafter.Whoever concealsabeliever’s faults in thisworld,AllahwouldconcealhisfaultsinthisworldandintheHereafter.Allahwouldaidhisservant,aslongasheaidshisbrother.Whoeverseeksapathinwhichhewouldgainknowledge,AllahwouldmakeeasyforhimapathtoJannah(Heaven).

ApeoplewouldnotgatherinahouseofthehousesofAllahandreciteandstudytheQur’an,exceptthattheywouldbetranquil,and themercyofAllahwoulddescendupon them,andAllahwouldpraisethem(inthepresenceoftheangels)andrewardthem.Whosoeverdoesnotput forthgooddeeds,his lineagewouldbeofnoavailtohim.’(Muslim)

Givingoutcharityanddoingrighteousdeeds.BythewillofAllah,thiswouldwaivethecalamities.AnasMaliksaidthattheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Charity would lessen the anger of the Rubb and wouldsafeguardonefromanevildeath.’(IbnHibban)

Mu’adthJabalsaidIaccompaniedtheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص onatrip,andIwasclosetohimandwhileweweretraveling,Iaskedhim:‘OMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص informmeofadeedthatwouldadmitmeintoJannahandsafeguardmefromtheFire.’Hesaid:‘Youhave asked about a great thing!And it is easy for one whoAllahmakes it easy for.WorshipAllah, anddonotassociateanypartnerswithhim.Performprayers,giveouttheZakat,fastRamadhanandperformHajj.’Hethensaid:‘ShallInotinformyouofthe‘gatesofgoodness’?Fastingwouldsafeguardone

TobemindfulofAllahandseekhisforgiveness.Formostof the calamitieswhich befallman are from the sins that hecommits.Allahsays:(Andwhateverstrikesyouofdisaster–itisforwhatyourhandshaveearned;butHepardonsmuch.)(42:30)

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص clarifiedtheimportanceofseekingforgivenesscontinuously.Heملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Whoever continuously seeks forgiveness, Allah would granthimrelieffromeveryworry,andrespitefromeverytensionandprovidehimfromplacesheexpectsleast.’(Haakim)

Allahhasinformedusthatcontinuousrepentanceis a cause for receiving provision, reward andwaivingpunishment.Allahsays:(And I have said: ‘ask for forgiveness from yourRubb, indeed He is the Most forgiving. And Hewill send rain to you in abundance.And He willbestowon youwealthand sons, andprovide foryougardens,andwillmakeforyourivers.)(71:10-12)

Allah has made repentance among the majorfactors that would waive calamities. Seekingforgivenessalonethroughspeech isnotenough

though.Thisshouldbeaccompaniedwithafirmdeterminationandbelief,whichwouldcauseonetoleavethesin,feelsincereregretfordoingit,andaleadtoadeterminedeffortnottoreturntoit.Allahsays:(And[Younus],whenhewentoffinangerandthoughtthatWewouldnotdecree[anything]uponhim.Andhecalledoutwithinthedarkness, “There isnodeityexceptYou;howperfectareYou above all that they falsely associate withYou. Indeed, Ihavebeenofthewrongdoers.”)(21:87)

OneshouldbemindfulofAllahduringtimesofease,bybeinggrateful toHim forall thegracesandbountiesHehasbestoweduponus,byrememberingHim,andworshippingHimappropriately.

Nomatterhowdelayedthepunishmentoftheoppressormayseem,hewouldindeedmeethisfate.AbuMusaal-Ash’arisaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Allahgives respite toanoppressor,butwhenHedecides toseizehim,Heneverreleaseshim.’Thenherecited:(AndthusistheseizureofyourRubbwhenHeseizesthecitieswhiletheyarecommittingwrong.Indeed,Hisseizureispainfulandsevere.(11:102))

Seeking refuge withAllah, by continuously supplicatinghimandhumblinghimselfbeforeHim.Allahsays:(And your Rubb says: ‘Call uponMe and I shall answer you.SurelythosewhoarrogantlydisdaintoworshipmeshallenterHellutterlyhumiliated.)(40:60)

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘There is nothing more beloved to Allah thansupplicatingHim.’(Tirmidthi)

ThobaansaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Man would be affected by a limitation in hisprovisions due to a sin which he commits, andnothing would prevent a calamity from befallingexceptDu’aa(supplication),andthegoodnessinone’s lifewould not increase except if one doesdeedsofrighteousness.’(IbnMajah)

Al-Ghazali,mayAllahhavemercyonhim,said:‘If it is said,what is the benefit ofDu’aa (supplication)whenthepreordained cannot beprevented?Know that among thepreordained things is the prevention of calamities throughsupplication.Du’aaisacauseforthepreventionofcalamities,andisasourceofmercy.Similarlytheseedisacauseforthegrowthof vegetation from theearth, as armor safeguards itswearerfromarrows.ThusdoesDu’aapreventcalamities.’

TheDu’aaistheweaponofthebeliever.Withit,hewouldbegrantedgoodness inhisprovisions.With it hewouldpreventcalamitiesfrombefallinghimbeforetheyoccur,orlightentheireffectaftertheyhaveoccurred,orcompletelyremoveit.

fromtheFireandcharitywouldeffaceone’ssinsjustaswaterwouldextinguishfireandaman’sprayerduringthenight.HethenrecitedthewordsofAllah:(TheyforsaketheirbedsastheycallontheirRubbinfearandhope,andtheyexpendofthatWehavebestoweduponthem.Nosoulknowswhatjoysoftheeyehavebeenkepthiddenforthemasrewardoftheirdeeds.)

Hethensaid: ‘Shall I informyouofthemost importantaspectoftheDeen, itspillaranditshighestpoint?’Mu’adhsaid: ‘CertainlyOMessengerofAllah!’Hesaid:‘ThemostimportantaspectoftheDeen is Islam (i.e. the two testimoniesofFaith),and itspillar isprayerand itshighestpoint isJihad.’TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص thensaid:‘Shall I inform you of a thingwhichwould secure for you all ofthis?’Mu’adhsaid:‘CertainlyOMessengerofAllah!’Hesaid:‘Bemindful,andguardyourtongue.’Mu’adhsaid:‘Wouldwebeheldaccountableforwhatwesay?’Heexclaimedwithsurprise, ‘Mayyourmotherloseyou!WouldpeoplebethrownintoHellontheirfaces,ortheirnoses,exceptonaccountofwhattheysay?’(Tirmidthi)

MaintainingtherelationsofKithandKinbyvisitingthemandhelpingthemintheirneeds.Allahsays:(Sowouldyouperhaps,ifyouturnedaway,causecorruptiononearthandseveryour[tiesof]relationship?Those[whodoso]aretheonesthatAllahhascursed,soHedeafenedthemandblindedtheirvision.ThendotheynotreflectupontheQur’an,oraretherelocksupon[their]hearts?)(47:22-24)

TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Thereisnogooddeedwhoserewardisgrantedmorerapidlythantyingrelationsofkithandkin.Thereisnosinwhosedoerispunishedmorerapidlythanharlotryandseveringtherelationsofthekithandkin.’(Baihaqi)

Oneshouldabstainfromwrongingorharmingpeople.TheProphetofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘TheDa’wah(supplication)oftheonewhoiswrongediscarriedabovethecloudsandthegatesoftheheavensareopenedforit,andtheRubbwouldsay:‘ByMymight,Iwillgrantyouvictoryevenafteraperiodoftime.’(IbnHibban)

Al-MuhaajirQunfudthsaid:‘IpassedbytheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص whilehewasurinating,andIgreetedhim,buthedidnotrespondtome,untilheperformedablution.Hethenexcusedhimselfsaying:‘IdislikedmentioningthenameofAllahwhileIwasnotinastateofpurity.’(IbnKhuzaimah)

Apersonshouldsupplicatewhilehisvoiceisnottooloud,nortooquiet.Allahsays:(Anddonot recite too loudly inyourprayeror tooquietlybutseekbetweenthatanintermediateway.)(17:110)

AbuMusaal-Ash’arisaid:‘WewerewiththeMessengerofAllahwouldwevalley,adownwentwewheneverand ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصutterTahleel (i.e. to say: La’ilaaha il’laAllah) andTakbeer(i.e.tosay:AllahAkbar)andwewouldraiseourvoiceswhiledoingso.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Opeople!Donotraiseyourvoicessomuch,foryouare not calling untoOnewho is deaf or notpresent,butOneWhoiswithyou,nodoubtHeistheAll-Hearer,EverNear.’(Bukhari)

Tobegin supplicationbypraisingAllahandexaltingthementionoftheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص.ApersonshouldthenhumblyrepenttoAllah,andheshouldendthesupplicationwiththisaswell.Allahsays:(Theircallthereinwillbe,“HowPerfectareYou,OAllah,”andtheirgreetingthereinwillbe,“Peace.”Andthelastoftheircallwillbe,“PraisetoAllah,Lordoftheworlds!”)(10:10)

FudaalahUbaidal-AnsaarisaidthattheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص sawamanwhosupplicatedduringhisprayer.HedidnotpraiseAllah,nordidheexalt thementionof theProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص andthereuponheleft.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Thismanhasrushed!’Hethencalledhimandsaidtohim:‘Ifoneofyousupplicates,lethimbeginbypraisinghisRubbandthenexaltthementionoftheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص andthensupplicateforwhateveryouwish.’(IbnKhuzaimah)

ThepersonshouldsupplicateAllahbyaskingHimwithHisbeautifulnamesandattributes.Allahsays:

Thecommanderofthebelievers,Umaral-Khattabsaid:‘IamnotworriedabouttheanswertomyDu’aa,ratheraboutthesupplication itself. If IaminspiredtomakeDu’aa,Allahwillanswerit.’

TheDu’aahasmanymannerisms,whichapersonwhosupplicatesshouldabidebywhensupplicating,sothathissupplicationwouldmorelikelybeaccepted.Ofthesemannersare:

Consuming only the lawful, such that he eats, drinks,wears,andrideslawfulthingsonly.AbuHurairahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:

‘O people, Allah is far removed from everyimperfection,andonlyacceptsthatwhichispure.IndeedAllahhascommanded thebelieverswithwhatHecommandedtheMessengers.Hesays:(O Messengers, eat of the good things and dorighteousdeeds,surelyIamAll-Knowingofwhatyoudo.)

AndHesays:(O you who believe! Eat from the good thingswhichWehavebestowedonyou,andbegratefultoAllah,ifHeindeedistheOneyouworship.)

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص thenmentionedamanwith shaggyhairandcoveredwithdustwhotraveledalongdistanceandthenraiseshishandsuptotheheavenssaying:‘OmyRubb!OmyRubb!’andheconsumedtheunlawful,drankfromtheunlawful,woretheunlawful,andwasraisedandnourishedwiththeHaram.SohowcanAllahanswerhissupplication?’(Muslim)

When a person supplicates and beseeches Allah, heshouldbeinastateofpurity,facethedirectionoftheQiblah,andraisehishands.SalmansaidthattheMessengerofAllah:said ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص‘IndeedyourRubbismodestandgenerous.HewouldbeshyofHisslavewhenheraiseshishands(supplicatingAllah)tonotrespondtohim.’(IbnHibban)

One should not transgress in his Du’aa. AbdullahMugahf’fal said that he heard his son saying: ‘OAllah, I askYoutograntmethewhitepalaceontherightsideofJannah!’Hesaid:‘Oson,ifyouaskAllah,askHimforJannah,andseekrefugefromHell-Fire,forIhaveheardtheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص say:‘Towardstheendoftimetherewillbeapeoplewhotransgressintheirsupplicationandablution.’(AbuDawud,Ahmad)

One should not make Du’aa to sever the relations ofkinshiportoseeksinfulthings.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘NoMuslimwouldsupplicateAllahwhilethatsupplicationdoesnotcompriseseveringrelationsofkinshiporsinfulthings, except thatAllahwould grant himoneofthreethings;AllahwouldeitheranswerhisDu’aa,orwardawayevilwhichisequaltowhatheaskedfor,orHewouldstoretherewardforhim.’

TheCompanionssaid:‘OMessengerofAllah,weshallthenexcessivelyaskAllah!’Hesaid:‘AskHim,forHelovesthat!’(Hakim)

Supplicating Allah in honorable and nobletimesandplaces.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘The best supplication is the supplication on theDayofArafah.ThebestthingIandtheProphetsbeforemesaid is ‘Laa ilaahah il’lal-laah’ (i.e. there isnothingworthyofbeingworshippedexceptAllahalone).’(Baihaqi)

ItispraiseworthytoaskAllahontheDayofJum’ah,asintheHadeethofAbuHurairahthattheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘InitisanhourinwhichnoslaveasksAllahwhileheisprayingforsomething,exceptthatAllahwouldgranthimwhatheaskedfor.’(Bukhari)

It is also praiseworthy to ask Allah during the Month ofRamadhan,theProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘In the month of Ramadhan, the Gates of the Heaven areopened,andtheGatesofHellareclosedandtheSatansarechained.’(Bukhari)

(AndtoAllahalonebelongallthebeautifulnames.SocallonHimbythese.AndleavealonethosewhodeviatefromtherightwaywithrespecttoHisnames.Theyshallberepaidforwhattheydo.)(7:180)

Abdullah Buraidah reported that his father said that theMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص heardamansaying:

د الذي ليم ييلد مي د الص ينتي األيحي ينتي الله ال إليه إال أ ينكي أ د أ يشهي يني أ يلكي بيأ يسأ »اللهم إني أ

د« يحي ويليم يوليد ويليم ييكن ليه كفوا أ

'Al'laahum'ma in'nee as'a'lo-ka be'an'nee ash-ha'do an'nakaan'tal'laah laa ilaahah il'laa anta al-Ahad as-Samad al-la'dheelamya'lidwalamyou'ladwalamya'kul'lawhoko'foo'oneAhad'

Meaning: ‘O Allah I bear witness that You areAllah,Whohasnopartner.TheOne,theOneuponwhom creation depends, the One who begetsnot,norisHebegotten;andtheOnebeyondanycomparison.’

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘YouhaveaskedAllahbyHisGreatestName,withwhichifyouaskHim,Hewillrespondtoyou,andifHeissupplicatedwith,Heanswers.’(IbnHibban)

The person supplicating Allah should bedevout,fearfulofHispunishment,andhopefulforHisreward.Allahsays:(AndrememberZakariyahwhenhecriedtohisRubb,saying,‘MyRubbleavemenotchildless,andYouarethebestofInheritors.SoWe heard his prayer and bestowed upon him Yahya andcuredhiswifeforhim.TheyusedtoviewithoneanotheringoodworksandtheycalledonUsinhopeandinfearandtheyhumbledthemselvessubmissivelybeforeUs.)(21:89-90)

Donotbeimpatientfortheresponseofyoursupplication.AbuHurairahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Oneofyouwouldbeansweredas longashedoesnot rushfortheresponseofhissupplicationsaying:‘Isupplicated,andIreceivednoresponse!’(Bukhari)

Repeating the supplication three times.AbdullahMasoodreportedthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص commendedrepeatingtheDu’aathreetimesandtoseekforgivenessthreetimes.(AbuDawood)

SeekingnearnesstoAllahandaskinghimthroughgooddeedswhichhehaddone.AbdullahUmarsaid:‘I heard the Messenger of Allah :saying ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص ‘Three men fromamong those who were before you, set out together till theyreachedacaveatnightandenteredit.Abigrockrolleddownthemountainandclosedthemouthofthecave.Theysaid(toeachother),‘NothingcansaveyoufromthisrockbuttoinvokeAllahbygivingreferencetotherighteousdeedswhichyouhavedone(forAllah’ssakeonly).’

So,oneofthemsaid,‘OAllah!Ihadelderlyparents(whomIusedtoprovidemilk)andIneverprovidedmy familywithmilk before them.One day, I wasdelayed, and I came late (at night). I milked thesheep for them and took the milk to them, but Ifoundthemsleeping.Idislikedprovidingmyfamilywiththemilkbeforethem.IwaitedforthemandthebowlofmilkwasinmyhandandIkeptonwaitingforthemtogetuptillthedaydawned.Thentheygotupanddrankthemilk.OAllah!IfIdidthatforYoursakeonly,pleaserelieveusfromourcriticalsituationcausedbythisrock.Sotherockshiftedalittlebuttheycouldnotgetout.’

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص added,‘Thesecondmansaid,‘OAllah!IhadacousinwhowasthedearestofallpeopletomeandIwantedtobeintimatewithherbutsherefused.LatershehadahardtimeinafamineyearandshecametomeandIgaveheronehundredandtwentyDinarsontheconditionthatshewouldnotresistmydesire,andsheagreed.WhenIwasabouttofulfillmydesire,shesaid:‘Itisillegalforyoutoviolatemychastityexceptbylegitimatemarriage.So,Ithoughtitagravesintoproceedwithherandleftherthoughshewasthedearestofallpeopletome,andalsoIleftthegoldIhadgivenher.OAllah!IfIdidthatforYoursakeonly,

Heshouldsupplicatewhileheisfasting.AbuHurairahreportedthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Three people’s Du’aa (supplication) will not be rejected; the(supplication of a) person who is fasting until he breaks hisfast, (thesupplicationof)a just Imam,and(supplicationof) theoppressed.HisDu’aawillberaisedovertheclouds,andthegatesoftheheavenswillbeopenedforit,andtheRubbwouldsay:‘ByMymight,Iwillgivevictorytoyouevenifafterawhile.’(Tirmithi)

Thelastthirdofthenight,andaftertheobligatoryprayers,asintheHadeethofAbuUmaamahthatitwassaidtotheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص whatDu’aaismostlikelytobeaccepted?

Heملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Du’aaduringthenight,andDu’aaaftertheFard(obligatory)prayers.’(Tirmidthi)

AbuHurairahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘OurRubbdescendstothelowestheavenduringthe last third of every night, andHewould say:‘Who calls upon Me and I would answer him?WhoasksofMeandIwouldgivehim?Whoseeksforgiveness,andIwouldforgivehim?’(Bukhari)

OneshouldaskAllahduringSujood(prostration);IbnAbbas said that the Prophet moved ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص the

curtainandsawpeopleprayingbehindAbuBakrandhesaid:‘No glad tidings of prophethood remain except for a truedreamwhich one sees himself or others see for him. It hasbeen forbidden to recite Qur’an during Rukoo (bowing) andSujood (prostration).As forRukoo,glorifyyourRubb therein,asforSujoodsupplicateAllahforyoursupplicationswouldbeanswered.’(Muslim)

Du’aawould be acceptedwhen it rains or armies face eachother; Imam ash-Sha’fiee, may Allah have mercy on him,summarizingthevariousstatementsoftheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص onthismattersaid:‘Seektheresponsetoyoursupplicationswhenyoufacetheenemy,whenIqamahisbeingcalledforprayers,andwhenrainfalls.’

supplicating.Iblees,mayAllahcursehim,whoistheworstofallcreation,supplicatedAllahandAllahansweredhim.Allahsays:(Hesaid,‘Grantmerespitetillthedaywhentheywillberaisedup.Allahsaid,youshallbeofthosewhoaregivenrespite.)(7:14-15)

AbuHurairahsaid:‘IheardtheProphetsaying,A servant committed a sin and he said: O Allah, forgive mysin! Allah the Exalted said: My servant has committed a sinandheknowshehasaLordwhoforgivessinsandholdshimaccountable.Thentheservantreturnedtohissinandhesaid:OAllah,forgivemysin!Allahsaid:MyservanthascommittedasinandheknowshehasaLordwhoforgivessinsandholdshimaccountable.Then theservant returned tohissinandhesaid:OAllah,forgivemysin!Allahsaid:MyservanthascommittedasinandheknowshehasaLordwhoforgivessinsandholdshimaccountable,sodowhatyouwillforIhaveforgivenyou.(Bukhari)

Apoetsaid:Whenmyhearthardened,andIhadnowheretogoIhopedthatyourforgivenesswouldencompassmeMygravesinsloomoverme,ButwhenIthinkofYourforgiveness,itisfargreater!

pleaserelieveusfromthepresentcalamity.’Sotherockshiftedalittlemorebutstilltheycouldnotgetoutfromthere.

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص added, “Then the thirdman said, ‘OAllah! IemployedafewlaborersandIpaidthemtheirwageswiththeexception of onemanwhodid not take hiswages andwentaway.IinvestedhiswagesandthisinvestmentgrewsomuchthatIendedupwithagreatdealofpropertythereby.(Thenaftersometime)hecamebackandsaidtome:‘OslaveofAllah!Paymemywages.Isaidtohim:Allthecamels,cows,sheep,andslavesyouseeareyours.Hesaid:‘OslaveofAllah!Don’tmockatme!’Isaid:Iamnotmockingyou.So,hetooktheentireherd

and drove themaway and left nothing.OAllah!If Idid that foryoursakeonly,pleaserelieveusfromourpresent suffering.’So, that rockshiftedcompletelyandtheywereabletoescape.’(Bukhari)

WhensupplicatingoneshoulddosocertainlyandaskAllahdeterminedly, andhumblehimselfbeforeAllah.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘IfyousupplicateAllah,askHimdeterminedlyanddonotsay:‘ifyouwish,grantme’,fornoonecanforceAllahtodoanything.’(Bukhari)

Oneshouldsupplicatewhilehe isattentiveofwhathe issaying,andsure thatAllahwill respond tohim.TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Theheartsarevesselsandsomecanholdmorethanothers,sowhenyouaskAllah,askHimwhileyouaresureanddeterminedthatHewillrespondtoyou.AllahdoesnotrespondtoaslavewhocallsuntoHimwhileheisinattentiveorabsentminded.’(Ahmed)

He replied: ‘Whenever you go to bed, recite Ayat al-Kursi(Al’laa’wholaae’laa’hail’laawho’walhai’yil-qay’youm)tillyoufinishthewholeverse.Ifyoudoso,Allahwillappointaguardfor youwhowill staywith you tillmorning and no devil willcomenearyou.’SoIreleasedhim.

Inthemorning,theMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص asked,‘Whatdidyourprisonerdolastnight?’Ireplied,‘HeclaimedthathewouldteachmesomewordsbywhichAllahwouldbenefitme,soIlethimgo.’TheMessengerofAllah,asked ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص ‘Whatwerethey?’ I replied, ‘Hesaid tome,‘Wheneveryougotobed,reciteAyatal-Kursifromthebeginningtotheend’.Hefurthersaidtome‘(ifyoudoso),Allahwillappointaguardforyouwhowillstaywithyou,andnodevilwillcomenearyoutillmorning.’AbuHurairahaddedthatthecompanionswereveryeagertodogooddeeds.

TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Indeed,hespokethetruth,althoughheisaliar!Doyouknowwhomyouweretalkingto,thesethreenights,OAbuHurairah?’AbuHurairahsaid:‘No’.Hesaid:‘ItwasSatan.’(Bukhari)

*AbuHurairahsaidthattheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Whenanyoneofyougoestobed,heshouldshakeouthisbedwiththeinsideofhiswaistsheet,forhedoesnotknowwhathascomeontoitafterhim,andthenheshouldsay:

AbuHurairahnarratedthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص assignedme to keep watch over the Fitr Alms during Ramadhan.Someone cameand started takinghandfuls of the foodstuffalms inastealthilymanner. I tookholdofhimandsaid: ‘ByAllah,IwilltakeyoutotheMessengerofAllah!’

Hesaid: ‘Iampoorandhavemanydependents,and Iam ingreat need for this.’ I released him, and in the morning theMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص askedme:‘whatdidyourprisonerdolast

night?’Isaid, ‘OMessengerofAllah,thepersoncomplainedof beingneedyandof havingmanydependents,so,Ipitiedhimandlethimgo.’

TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Indeed,hetoldyoualieandhewillbecomingagain.’IbelievedthathewouldshowupagainastheMessengerwaitedISoreturn.wouldhethatmetoldhad ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصforhimwatchfully.

When he appeared and again started stealinghandfuls of foodstuff, I caught hold of himagainand said, ‘Iwill definitely take you to the

MessengerofAllah!’Hesaid,‘Pleaseleaveme,forIamverypoor andhavemanydependents. I promise Iwill not comebackagain.’Ipitiedhimandlethimgo.

InthemorningtheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص askedme,‘Whatdidyourprisonerdo?’Ireplied,‘OMessengerofAllah!Heagaincomplainedofhisgreatneedandoftoomanydependents,soItookpityonhimandsethimfree.’TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Verily,hetoldyoualieandhewillreturn.’

*AbuQatadahsaidthattheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘ThegooddreamisfromAllahandthenightmareisfromSatan.Sowhoeverseessomething he dislikes should dry spit three times on his leftside,andheshouldseekrefugeinAllahfromSatan,forthenitwouldnotharmhim,(andwhoeverseesmeinhisdreamwouldreallyseeme)forSatancannotappearlikeme.’(Bukhari)

*AbuSa’eed al-Khudri said that theProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص Ifanyoneof youseesadream thathe likes, then itisfromAllah,andheshouldpraiseAllahfor itandnarrate it toothers;but if heseessomethingelsefromwhathedislikes,thenitisfromSatan,andheshouldseekrefugewithAllahfromitsevil,andheshouldnotmentionittoanybody,forthenitwillnotharmhim‘(Bukhari)

'Al-hamdo lil'laahil ladthee ahyaanaba'da maa amaa'tana wa ilai-hinnashoor.'(Bukhari)

Meaning:With your name I die and live.All praise is due toAllah,Whohasgivenus lifeaftercausingus todieanduntoHimistheResurrection.’

ريجنيا الله خي ويليجنيا وبسم الله بسم الميخرج ي ولج وخي المي ي يسأيلك خي أ إني اللهم

لنا وعىل الله ريبنا تيويك

‘Al’laahum’ma in’nee as’a’lo-ka khair al-molij wa khair al-makhraj. Bismillahi walaj’naa wa bismillah kharajnaa wa alaAllah rab’banaa tawak’kalnaa.’ Then he shouldgreethisfamily.’(AbuDawud)

Meaning:OAllah! IaskYou forgoodbothwhenenteringandwhengoingout;inthenameofAllahwe have entered, and in the name of Allah wehavegoneout,andinAllahourRubbdowetrust.

Meaning:IbeginwiththenameofAllah,IputmytrustinAllah.There is no changing of condition nor is there power unlessAllahgivesHisleave.’

'Subhaa'nakal'laahum'marab'banawabe'hamde'kalaailaahahil'laaantaastaghfe'ro'kawaatooboilaika'

Whatever (sins) he accumulated in that gathering would beforgiven.’(Tirmithi)

Meaning:OAllah,weaskYouinthisjourneyofours,uprightness,pietyandsuchdeedsasarepleasing toYou.OAllah,makeeasy forus this journeyofoursandmake its lengthshort forus.OAllah,YouaretheCompanioninthejourney,andtheOneWholooksafterthefamilyandpropertyinourabsence.

Uponreturningfromthetriponeshouldaddtotheabove:ابدون لريبنا حامدون آيبوني تيائبون عي

'A'yee'boon taa'iboon aa'bidoon le-rab'be'nahaa'me-doon'

Meaning:We return repentant,worshipping, andpraisingourRubb.(Muslim)

SUPPLICATION OF THE TRAVELER TO THOSE WHOM HE LEAVES BEHIND.

Meaning:IentrusttoAllahyourreligion,whatyouareresponsibleforandyourfinaldeeds.

Meaning:FarremovedisAllahfromeveryimperfection,ourRubbandIpraiseHim.ThereisnothingworthyofbeingworshippedexceptYou.IseekYourforgivenessandrepenttoYou.

SUPPLICATION FOR EASING MATTERS IN LIFE

Alinarrates thatFatimahcomplained tohimaboutherhandsblisteringfromgrindingflour.Sohesaid:‘Whatifyouweretoapproachyourfatherandaskhimforaservant?’

Meaning: I seek refuge with the perfect (andcomplete) words of Allah from the evil of allcreatedthings.

IbnAb’bassaidthattheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Ifoneofyouwantstoapproachhisfamily,lethimsay:

Meaning:OAllah,Rubbofthesevenheavensandallthatisshadedbythem,andtheRubboftheearthandallthatstandsonitssurfaceandtheRubbofthedevilsandallwhomtheyhaveledastrayandtheRubbofthewindsandallthatitcarries.OAllah,

weaskyouthebestofthiscity,andthebest(hospitality)fromitsinhabitantsandweseekrefugewithYoufromitsevilandtheevilofitsinhabitantsandalltheevilinit.

WHAT ONE SHOULD SAY UPON SEEING THAT WHICH HE LIKES

A’ishah said whenever the Messenger ofAllah was amusedwithsomethinghewouldsay:

‘Alhamdulilahal’ladtheebe’ni’ma-te’heto’tim’mos-saa’le’haat’

Meaning:Praise is toAllahbyWhoseGracegooddeedsarecompleted.

JabirAbdullahsaid: ‘Iheard theMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص saying,“IfapersonmentionstheNameofAllahuponenteringhishouseor eating, Satan says, addressing his followers: ‘You will findnowheretospendthenightandnodinner.’ButifheenterswithoutmentioningtheNameofAllah,Satansays(tohisfollowers);‘Youhave found (a place) to spend the night in, and if he does notmentiontheNameofAllahatthetimeofeating,Satansays:‘Youhavefound(aplace)tospendthenightinaswellasfood.”’‘(Muslim)

A’ishahsaidthattheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘IfoneofyoueatshisfoodheshouldmentionthenameofAllah,andifheforgetstomentionit,heshouldsay:

Meaning:OAllah,wemakeYouourshieldagainstthem,andtakerefugeinYoufromtheirevils..

WHAT ONE SHOULD SAY WHEN HE IS IN DISTRESS

IbnAb’bas said that theProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص used to supplicateAllahwiththefollowingwhenhewasindistress:

ال إله إال الله العظيم الحليم . ال إله إال الله رب العرش العظيم. ال

إله إال الله رب السماوات ورب األرض ورب العرش الكريم

'Laa ilaa'hah il'lal'laah al-adtheem al-haleem laailaahahil'lal'laahrab'bilarshiladheem.Laailaahahil'lal'laahrab'bissamaawaa'teewarab'bilardiwarab’bilarshilkareem.'

Meaning: There is nothing worthy of beingworshippedexceptAllah; theGrand, theSerene.There is nothing worthy of being worshippedexceptAllahtheRubboftheGrandThrone.ThereisnothingworthyofbeingworshippedexceptAllah,theRubbof theHeavens, theRubbof theEarth, and theRubbof theGenerousThrone.

AbdurrahmaanAbi Bakrah said that his father said that theProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص said:‘Thesupplicationofonewhoisindistressis:

أني كله ال إليه إال أينت يصلح ل شي ي وأ رفية عي يرجو فال تيكلني إىل نيفيس طي تيك أ اللهم ريحمي

‘Alla’hum’marahmatakaarjoofalatakil’neeilaanafseetarfataainwaaslihleesha’neekol’lahlaailaahahil’laanta.’(AbuDawud)

Meaning:OAllahIseekYourmercy,anddonotabandonmetomyselfevenforamoment.Andbettermysituationforme.ThereisnothingworthyofbeingworshippedexceptYoualone.

يا ل اة خي ا كانيت الويفي يا ل وتيويفني إذي ياة خي يحيني ما كانيت الحي اللهم أ

‘Al’laahum’maah’ye’nemakaa’natal-hayaatokhairanleewatawaf’fa’neemaakaa’natalwafaatokhairanlee.’(Muslim)Meaning:OAllahkeepmealiveaslongaslifeisgoodforme,andcausemetodie,ifdeathisbetterforme.

AbuSa’eedal-Khudrisaid: ‘Whenever theMessengerofAllahwhatmentionwouldhegarmentnewawearwould ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص itwas,whetheraturban,ashirt,oralowercovering,thenhewouldsay:

يعوذ بكي من ليه وأ ي ما صنع يه وخي يسأيلك من خي أ وتنيه سي ينتي كي أ مد اللهم ليكي الحي

ا صنع ليه مي ه وشي شي

‘Al’laahum’malakaal-hamdantaka’so-ta’ne’heas’a’lo-kaminkhai’re’hewakhairmasu’na’a la’whowaa’oodthobe’keminshar’re’hewashar’reemasuna’ala’who.’(Tirmithi)

Meaning:OAllahtoyoubelongsallthePraise.Youhavegivenittomeforclothing.Iaskyouitsgoodnessandthegoodnessitwasmadefor.IseekrefugewithAllahfromitsevilandtheevilitwasmadefor.

Meaning: O Allah, I consult You through YourKnowledge, and I seek strength through YourPower,andaskofYourGreatBounty;forYouareCapablewhereasIamnotand,YouknowandIdonot,andYouaretheKnowerofhiddenthings.OAllah,ifYouknowthatthismatter(hereoneshouldname it) is good forme in respect ofmyDeen,mylivelihoodandtheconsequencesofmyaffairs,(orhesaid), thesooneror the laterofmyaffairsthen ordain it forme,make it easy forme, andbless it forme.But ifYouknow thismatter (oneshouldagainnameit)tobebadformyDeen,mylivelihoodortheconsequencesofmyaffairs,(orhesaid)thesoonerorthelaterofmyaffairsthenturnitawayfromme,andturnmeawayfromit,anddecreeformegoodwhereveritmaybe,andcausemetobecontentedwithit.

Jaabirsaid:‘TheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص wouldteachusIstikhaarahashewouldteachusachapteroftheQur’an.’(Bukhari)

SalahofIstikhaarahisapracticebasedontheSunnahtoaskAllah for guidance when one is about tomake an importantdecision,orwhenheencountersadifficultchoice,andhedoesnotknowwhichoptionisbetterforhim.

Also,thiswouldsafeguardmanfromthewhisperingofSatan,andof thatwhichhemissesandhe thinks tobegood.Mandoeswhathecaninordertoobtaincertainthings,andAllahwould grant him what he seeks or not, and in any casewhateverAllahwillsandordainsisinthebestinterestofman.TheonewhoseekstheguidanceofAllahthroughIstikhaarah

wouldcertainlynotbeinastateofloss,andtheonewhoseeksadvicewouldnotregretit.

Procedure of Salatul-Istikhaarah

Apersonshouldperformatwounitprayer(otherthantheobligatoryprayers). In thefirstRakahapersonafterrecitingal-Fatihah,hemayreciteQulyaaa’you-halkaa-fe’roon’(Surah109)andinthesecondafterrecitingal-Fatihah,hemayreciteQulwho’wal’laa who-ahad’ (but this is not requiredandtheMuslimcanpraywithanyotherpartofthe

Qurantheywish).

BeforesayingtheDu’aaofIstikhaarah,oneshouldpraiseAllahandglorifyHimandthenaskAllahtoexaltthementionoftheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص thereafter,heshouldsupplicateAllahsaying:اللهم إني أستخيك بعلمك، وأستقدرك بقدرتك، وأسألك من فضلك العظيم؛ فإنك

تقدر وال أقدر وتعلم وال أعلم، وأنت عالم الغيوب . اللهم إن كنت تعلم أن هذا األمر

readupon)bestrongandfaithful,andthattheonewhoreadsthemhasesteemandstrong Iman.So(when theseare readandnoeffectisseen)thisisduetoweaknessoftheonewhohasadministeredthetreatment,orduetotheweaknessoftheoneuponwhomthis isread,orforsomeotherstrongreasonwhichwouldprevent theeffectivenessof the treatment,as isthecasewithconventionalmedicines.Theineffectivenessofamedicinecouldbecausedbyitbeingrejectedbyone’snature.’1Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, also saidconcerning prophetic treatment for sicknesses: ‘The cure forthis type (of sickness) isthroughtwothings:The first pertains to thepatient, and the second tothe one who administersthecure.Fromthepatient’sside, it pertains to thestrength of his soul andsincere return toAllah, theCreator of all, and to seekrefuge with Allah truthfully.One would not be abletoharmhisenemywithhisweaponsunless twomattersarepresent:Theweaponinitselfisstrongandenduring,andone’sforearm isstrongaswell.Wheneveroneof these two thingsisnotpresenttheweaponwouldbeofnouse.Sowhatifbothofthesethingsarenotpresent?One’sheartwouldbefarfromtheTawheed(beliefintheOnenessofAllah),truedependenceuponhim,andhewouldhavenoweapons.Thesecondmatteristhattheonewhoadministersthetreatmentmustalsopossessthesetwotraitsaswell.’2

TheMuslimwhoadherestotheteachingsofIslamandappliesthemwouldlivealifeofhappinessandhewouldbesafeguardedhimfromsicknessesthatresultfrompsychologicalconditions.

Supplication and remembrance ofAllah are among themostimportantmethodsbywhichonewouldsafeguardhimselffromdiseasesbeforetheybefallman.SupplicationandremembranceofAllahwould alsowaive calamities after theyhavebefallenman.Allahsays:(AndWesenddownof theQur’an thatwhich ishealingandmercyforthebelievers,butitdoesnotincreasethewrongdoers

exceptinloss.)(17:82)

Allahalsosays:(Say,‘Itis,forthosewhobelieve,aguidanceandcure.’)(41:44)

It should be known that seeking treatment fromQur’anandSunnahoftheMessengerملسو هيلع هللا ىلص wouldnothaveaneffectunlesstheonewhoisadministratingthecurehasfirmIman.This,ofcourse,doesnotmean that one should leave aside conventionalmedicines and medical treatment. The Prophet:said ملسو هيلع هللا ىلص

‘Seekmedical attentionO slaves ofAllah, for indeedAllahhasnotplacedadiseaseexcept thathehasplacedacureforit.’(IbnHibban)

Yet, one should be aware not to seek medical treatment inunlawfulthings.AbuHurairahsaid:‘TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص forbadeusingunlawfulmedicines.’(Haakim)

Ibn al-Qayyim, may Allah have mercy on him, said: ‘Thereis a point here which must be seriously considered. Theremembrance of Allah, verses from the Qur’an, andsupplicationsthatareusedfortreatment,eventhoughtheyarebeneficial in themselves, require that the individual (they are

Meaning:OAllahrelievehimfromhisailment,RubbofthePeople,curehimforindeedYouaretheOneWhocures,thereisnotruecureexceptYourcure,acurethatleaves(notraceof)illnessbehind.

*TheRuqyahofJibreelu.AbuSa’eedal-KhudrinarratedthatJibreelucametotheProphetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص andsaid:‘OMuhammaddoyoufeelpain?’Hereplied:‘Yes’hesaid:

ي حاسد الله ييشفيك يو عي كل نيفس أ ء يؤذيك من شي يرقيك من كل شي باسم الله أ

يرقيك باسم الله أ

‘Bismil’laaharqeekminkol’leeshai’inyo’dheekminshar’reekol’lee nafsin o ai’nin haasidin Allah yash’feek bismillahiarqeek.’(Muslim)

Meaning:IbeginwiththenameofAllahandaskAllahtocureyou fromeverythingwhichharmsyou,and fromallevilsandfromtheeviloftheenviouseye.OAllahcurehim,IbeginwiththenameofAllahandaskHimtocureyou.’

UthmanAbilAassaidthathecomplainedtotheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص ofapainthathefeltsincehebecameMuslim.TheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص saidtohim:‘Putyourhandonthespotthathurtsandsay:

اذر )7( يجد وأحي ا أ مي يعوذ بالله ويقدريته من شي باسم الله )3( أ

'Bismillah three times, and then say seven times: A’oodthobil’laahwaqudra’te’heminshar’reemaaa’je-dowao’haadhir.’(Muslim)

Meaning:IbeginwiththenameofAllah.IseekrefugeinAllahandHisPowerfromthisevilthatIfindandthatIfear.

Herearesomeversesof theQur’anandsupplicationswhichhave been authentically reported from the Prophetملسو هيلع هللا ىلص whichwould waive calamities after they have befallen, and whichwouldserveasaneffectivetreatmentbythewillofAllah:*Abu Sa’eed al-Khudri said: ‘A group of the Companions of theProphetofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلص traveleduntiltheypassedanArabvillageandtheysoughttobeentertainedbythem,butthesepeoplerefusedtohostthem.Theirchiefwaslaterstungbyascorpionandtheysearchedforonewhocouldcurehimfromhisailment,buttonoavail.

Sosomeofthevillagerssaid:‘Maybeyoushouldapproachthetravelers.Maybesomeofthemhaveameanstocurehim.’Sotheyapproachedthemandsaid:‘Opeople,ourchiefhasbeenstungandwehavesoughttocurehimbuttonoavail.Sodoanyofyouhaveacure?’

Oneof theCompanionssaid: ‘ByAllah, Iadminister treatments,butbyAllahwesoughttobeentertainedbyyouandyourefused,and Iwillnotadminister thecureuntil yougiveussomething incompensation.Sotheyagreedtogivethemaflockofsheep.

TheCompanionread(Alhamdulil’laahrab’bilaa’lameen…)andblewover[thechief],andhewascuredandhewalkedaboutasthoughnothinghadharmedhim.Theythengavethemtheflockofsheep.Someofthecompanionssaid,‘Dividetheflockamongus.’But theonewhoadministeredthetreatment,said: ‘DonotdoanythinguntilwereturntotheMessengerofAllahملسو هيلع هللا ىلصandwementiontohimwhathappened,andseewhathecommandsus.’

WhentheymentionedwhathadhappenedtotheMessengerofAllah,hesaid:‘Andhowdidyouknowthatitisacure?’Hefurthersaidtothem:‘Youhavedonewell, divide [the sheep]andassign formeashareamongstyou.’TheProphetthensmiled.(Bukhari)

A’ishah said that whenever the Messenger of Allah ملسو هيلع هللا ىلصvisitedasickpersonorasickpersonwasbrought tohim,hewouldsay:
