FOR LATINOS IN 2010, THE WORD ISACCOUNTABILITY

It's Time to Get Immigration Reform

    Done

Recently the White House is holding a meeting with

community-based organizations who are focused on achieving

immigration solutions. Later in the day, President Obama will

meet with Senators Charles Schumer (D-NY) and Lindsey

Graham (R-SC) to discuss their plans for bipartisan

immigration reform legislation. The following is a statement

from Clarissa Martnez De Castro, Director of Immigration and

National Campaigns at NCLR (National Council of La Raza),

the largest national Latino civil rights and advocacy

    organization in the United States:

"For the president, the pressure is on and the need is great.

Latino voters are demanding accountability. We want to see

concrete action and a commitment to moving forward on

legislation before the November elections-and not just

another meeting to discuss the issue or check the box saying

that the president is serious about immigration reform.

    LUIS VALDEZ's

    landmark stage play,

"ZOOT SUIT" is set toopen in Mexico City

    on April 29, 2010.

    Luis Valdez directs the National

    Theatre Company of Mexico

(CNT) in what will be the first

    Chicano play ever produced by

    the national company. Alma

    Martinez, who appeared in the

    original stage and film, brought

the project to the CNT and

    serves as US-Mexico ProjectCoordinator.

"We must do everything we can to get our economy back on

track, and doing so includes passing immigration reform that

levels the playing field for all workers and restores dignity and

the rule of law to our system. The president has

acknowledged that we must fix our broken immigration

system, and he promised, to do so, but we have not seen

much action to accompany his words. It is significant that he

is putting a series of immigration-related meetings on his

schedule this week, but these need to result in actuallyadvancing bipartisan legislation.

"If the president and Congress move forward, immigration

reform would be a prime motivator of Latino civic participation

this fall. The millions of Latinos who voted for the first time in

2008, and those who went through the arduous citizenship

process to get that privilege, need to see that participating in

the democratic process means something. Many had the

expectation that their vote would help speed up the day when

we got serious immigration reform enacted and now their

patience is wearing thin. We must not lose momentum or let

the Latino community's unprecedented civic engagementwither. As we look toward November, we don't care what

party people vote for, but we do care that people vote and see

that their vote has meaning and leads to action. Therefore,

both parties have much to gain by advancing immigration

reform and solving this vexing national problem that has

    special significance for Latino voters.

"Now is the time for elected officials in both parties to stand

up and be counted. Our nation has waited more than 20 years

for a solution to our broken immigration system, and the

entire Latino community is paying the price. Our leaders know

what needs to be done, and it's time for them to demonstrate

they have the courage and commitment to do it. And we

know that voters, including Latino voters watching this issue

closely, will hold them accountable, whether for avoidance or

for obstruction. From a policy, political, and moral

perspective, the time to act is now."

$1.5 billion. On the Census Bureau's Take 10 Challenge Map

    http://2010.census.gov/2010census/take10map/ you

can track how well your community is participating in the

census by seeing what percentage of households have mailed

    back their census forms.

The nation surpassed the 50% mark on the last day of March

-- half the nation has returned their census form. Are you

above or below this national rate? The Census Bureau ischallenging all communities to achieve a higher rate in 2010

than they did in 2000. Nationally, our goal is to "beat" the

2000 Census rate of 72%. Each community's 2000 rate is also

    on the Take 10 Map.

The Mail Participation Rate Tracker Widget is now available for

you to embed on your Web site. It's an easy way to remind

your constituents that they need to mail back their census

forms. Perhaps it will inspire them, too. Once the widget

displaying your area's rate is embedded on your site, the rate

will automatically update every day when Take 10 map is

updated with the latest daily rates. Directions for finding andembedding your Rate Tracker Widget are included below.

Remember:Census data help determine how more than

$400 BILLION in Federal funds are distributed to state, local

and tribal areas each year. A complete count of your

community in the census will help ensure that your

community gets its fair share of census-based funding for the

    next ten years.

Census Bureau Reports Puerto Rico'sManufacturers Shipments Reach $80.2

    Billion in 2007

Puerto Rico reported $80.2 billion in manufacturers'

shipments in 2007, up from $58.6 billion in 2002, according

to results from the U.S. Census Bureau's 2007 Economic

    Census.

In 2007, Puerto Rico had 2,151 manufacturingestablishments, employing 110,691 people and accounting

for $3.5 billion in annual payroll. This compares with 2,195

such establishments in 2002, which employed 126,707 people

and had $3.1 billion in annual payroll.

The economic census, which profiles Puerto Rico's economy

every five years, includes statistics for Puerto Rico

manufacturing by metropolitan statistical areas and

municipios (county equivalents). The data files provide

information on the number of employees and production

workers, value added by manufacture, cost of materials,

In 2007, chemical manufacturing continued to lead a ll

manufacturing subsectors in value of shipments,

reporting $52.1 billion (65 percent of total

manufacturing shipments), compared with $39.8 billion

(68 percent of total shipments) in 2002.

Miscellaneous manufacturing was the second leadingsubsector with $7.4 billion in shipments in 2007,

compared with $3.2 billion in 2002. Medical equipment

    and supplies manufacturing led miscellaneous

manufacturing with $7.3 billion in shipments in 2007.

In 2007, the manufacturing sector reported value added

of $68.6 billion, cost of materials of $12.5 billion, and

capital expenditures of $4.9 billion. In 2002, value

added was $45.6 billion, cost of materials was $13.4

    billion, and capital

    expenditures were $3.7 billion.

    The San Juan-Caguas-Guaynabo metropolitan statistical

area accounted for $64.2 billion of the island's

    manufacturing

shipments in 2007. The same metropolitan statistical

area led the manufacturing sector in 2002, with

    shipments of $44.1 billion

Latinas are a large and influential segment of the U.S. population. The

Census Bureau estimates that the total U.S. Latino population will be

47.8 million by the year 2010, of that figure, 14.1 million are Latinas. Of

this figure, 14.1 million are Latinas, and of these, 65% are bilingual or

English-speaking only. The show that taps into this powerful market

sector is, Let's Talk! (produced by Latin Heat Entertainment), the Latina

POV talk show which officially makes its debut on Wednesday, March

10th, at Mama Juanas in Studio City.

Let's Talk!, is a ground breaking English-Language talk show featuring

four intelligent, opinionated and dynamic ladies who feel it is time

Latinas had their say. Emmy-award winning host Marabina Jaimes

    (Storytime); Actress-comedienne Dyana Ortelli (Curb Your Enthusiasm);

    Bel Hernandez, Publisher of Latin Heat, a print and online magazine;

and Actress and Y-Generation/Green Gal Kikey Castillo, get together to

dish about current social issues and just plain "Chisme" (gossip).

These four Latinas are already bringing cultural relevance to the talk

show landscape with their internet talk show. Let's Talk! is a 15 minute"Anytime" talk show with a unique perspective on culturally relevant

topics with universal appeal. "Our target audience is Latinas, but our

content is universal which anyone can enjoy," says Hernandez, who

serves as both co-host and executive producer. Current episodes can

be seen at: www.latinheat.com and www.letstalkshow.tv.

"The one thing missing in the nation's conversation is the Latina voice

and that's where we come in. We want to be part of the dialogue,"

co-host Jaimes, the Mexi-Rican in the group says. As for Ortelli, the

self-described "Last Angry Chicana", she is more direct, "I'm tired of

being ignored." Castillo, the "Y-generation/Green Gal" of the group, best

described the need for the show, "I am an American, yes I'm Latina, but

    I'm an American. I'm today's culture."

Latin Heat Productions, a division of Latin Heat Media, LLC is producing

in association with Angel Flight Media. "We felt it was time to give

English-speaking Latinas a forum to speak their minds," added Miguel

Torres, CEO of Angel Flight Media.
