NEW DELHI: It's the sort of dance that a certain kind of men put

their best foot forward to after four pegs of alcohol. In recent

years, the nagin dance - where the performer bends and

wriggles, sometimes even on the floor in a hooded cobra pose -

has become the most shared or uploaded take-away from a night of

embarrassing excess. But last week, the nagin dance rocked an entirely

new stage when a desperate bunch of protesters raved to its rhythm at a

PWD office in Buldhana. It was the viral video of the day.

What happened at the small town in Maharashtra further underlines how

the nagin dance has come captured and colonised popular imagination in

a quiet subterranean way.

Originally inspired from the antics of Sridevi, its premier populariser via Nagina (1986), the dance has become far more copied

than one has cared to notice and acknowledge.

On Google search, Nagin dance, fetches 4,32,000 results. Just type, Nagin dance wedding, on YouTube and you get 34,300

results. Young men from Haryana sway and strike like a viper, paunchy geriatric Punjabi frolic to the sound of an imaginary

been and obese dancers slither in Pakistan parties. In Bihar, marathon nagin dance sessions are commonplace in marriage

events. Those seduced by its pleasure are said to be getting withdrawal symptoms after the liquor ban.

Interestingly, this highly amusing dance has been largely appropriated by males, especially in weddings, though its film origins

go back to the heroines of Hindi movies and Hollywood. Now it can be seen in commercials too. A list:

Films:

Nagina (1986): This Rishi Kapoor-Sridevi starrer of an icchadhari (form-changing) snakewoman's love made box-office

hisssstory. Sridevi's venomous dance number (Main teri dushman) against the malevolent Amrish Puri is full of dirty glares and

cobra strike poses. This was perhaps the break-out moment for this dance. .

The Indian Tomb (1959): The world is divided into two categories of people: those who have seen Debra Paget's divine snake

dance and those who haven't. Dressed in nothing but jewel-like conical accessories, rather miraculously glued to her essentials,

Hollywood's Ms Paget wiggles in a manner worthy of any Olympian gymnast. The show has over 2.3 million views and

undeniably this para will add to the numbers.

Nagin (1954): Man dole mera tan dole, the original Nagin song which stood at no 2 on Binaca Geet Mala's annual chart,

brought the sound of the been to the masses. The truth is that the sound came from a clay violin, used by music director

Hemant Kumar on the advice of his assistant Kalyanji (the other of Anandji), who also played it. Classically-trained

Vyjayanthimala plays the pining lover seduced by the music.
