Definition of a Histogram
A graphical representation of the distribution of numerical data
often confused with a bar chart
Very useful statistical technique to understand the spread of data for a process
History Regarding The Histogram
Initially developed by Karl (Carl) Pearson in 1891
Statistician, University College London
How To Develop A Histogram
Collect a sample of data (minimum of 30 data points)
Break it down into Bins of data based upon interval range for the sample data values
Once Bins have been determined, count the number of data points in each bin
Plot the number of data points in each bin to form a histogram
Rules Of Thumb For Determining Data Bins For A Histogram
Need to develop the number of bins for representing data
Most common: Sturges's Formula & Rice Rule
Sturges's Formula:
Rice's Rule:
Example Of A Histogram
From a production line that cuts brakeline tube to length
Length Data on next slide collected over the last 24 hours
Three shift operation, 8 hours per shift
Data presented in intervals or Data Bins
Specification is 35 inches +/-1.5 inches
