We hired our neighboring workshops to do our construction, fabrication, and detail work, and now we’re turning around and serving beer to those same artisans and laborers.” LMI is now working to complete construction and rehabilitation work on the seven remaining Coal Shed buildings, which range in size from 1,000 to 8,000 square feet, and creating a direct pathway from the Coal Sheds to the Mare Island Ferry Terminal. Historic Coal Sheds — Mare Island Brewing Company Begins Production

Late last year, Lennar Mare Island (LMI), reached a major milestone in their efforts to reinvigorate the Mare Island Waterfront, unveiling its newly rehabilitated Coal Sheds, including its first commercial business, Mare Island Brewing Company.

LMI is rehabilitating the Coal Sheds as a mixed-use commercial complex, intended for a variety of businesses, including small manufacturers, food and beverage companies and specialty retailers. With an eye on the historic significance of the Coal Sheds, Mare Island Brewing in partnership with LMI, completely and carefully restored its Coal Shed with historically accurate details.

“Restoring this Coal Shed was an incredible journey for both LMI and us,” said Mare Island resident and Brewing Company co-founder Kent Fortner. “It was hard work—but extremely gratifying work—with constant reminders of our responsibilities as stewards of history as we forge a new future for the Island.”

The opening of the new brewery will allow the company to nearly double their current workforce and significantly increase its brewing capacity.

“The thriving Mare Island economy is unique; restoring the Coal Shed required specialized artisan work, and nowhere else in the Bay Area—and perhaps nowhere in the whole country—do you find such a concentration of such artisans than on Mare Island. We hired our neighboring workshops to do our construction, fabrication, and detail work, and now we’re turning around and serving beer to those same artisans and laborers.”

LMI is now working to complete construction and rehabilitation work on the seven remaining Coal Shed buildings, which range in size from 1,000 to 8,000 square feet, and creating a direct pathway from the Coal Sheds to the Mare Island Ferry Terminal.

Alstom Expands its Mare Island OperationsAlstom Transport, Inc. will see its Mare Island operations expand in the coming years after being awarded a new large-scale, multi-year contract with Los Angeles County Metropolitan Transportation Authority. Under the new contract, Alstom will overhaul 52 Light Rail Vehicles (LRV) for the LA County Metro system, allowing them to keep the rail cars in service for at least another 15 years.

Alstom has operated on Mare Island since 2009, using the Island’s unique resources to restore and refurbish rail cars. High-profile clients serviced at the Mare Island facility include major rail providers such as Amtrak, Caltrans and Rocky Mountaineer. Alstom expects the LRV program to create roughly 45 highly skilled local jobs directly and through its many subcontractors over the course of the contract as the company continues to invest in its Mare Island facility.

New Residential Neighborhoods Springing Up on Mare IslandMare Island’s residential community continues to expand by attracting home buyers from all over the Bay Area. Construction by Lennar Homes is currently in full swing with the finishing touches being put on a new 38-home neighborhood. Across the street, LMI has started a series of multi-million dollar public improvements that will allow for construction of an additional 58 new homes, expected in 2018 and 2019.

With strong sales interests from home buyers, the new residential neighborhood has been a boon to the local community. More than 100 construction jobs have been created, generating local tax revenue and creating millions of dollars worth of economic activity.

Mare Island currently has 346 homes, including new homes, historic homes, condominiums and apartments. Residential amenities include walkable family-friendly neighborhoods, the K-8 Mare Island Health and Fitness Academy, ferry service, several parks and open space in a grand natural setting.
