COMMITMENT WEEKEND: 2017 ANNUAL CATHOLIC APPEAL

This weekend, our parish will be conducting the Annual Catholic Appeal in-pew Commitment Weekend. Please remember that the Annual Catholic Appeal is much different than a one-time special collection. It is a pledge campaign where you can make a gift paya-ble in installments.

The ACA theme, “Love Your Neighbor As Yourself,” was selected to remind us that our contributions to the Annual Catholic Appeal enable the funded ministries and services to share God’s love with many others in our Parish and our Archdiocese.

Each pledge makes a difference because all Parishes participate in the campaign and the gifts of many enable our Archdiocese to deliver needed ministries and services. Thank you for your prayerful consideration and generous response.

Catholic “social” media should be a part of a vibrant Catholic life today. The Pope does it, Bishop Barron does it, even the Little Sisters of the Poor do it. So if you’re a Catholic news “junkie” as opposed to a junk food “junkie” or an avid follower of the latest fashions, join the crowd and dedicate at least a few minutes to surveying all the “chatter” that goes on out there in cyber space. I say “a few minutes” because you must be warned, podcasts, (which are basically radio shows, 3 minutes to an hour and half) and video clips (which can be found on something called YouTube, or Vimeo, or just plain “google searches” can be very addictive. And of course, wading into these waters can be dangerous since vulgarity, fake news and pornography are often making their unwanted attempts to add to one’s addictive behavior. This is why it is so vital to search for and be a loyal sub-scriber to the most fascinating and most interesting topics of our lives. I refer of course to religious topics. In fact, may I share a little advise that I share especially with men in the confessional? (Obviously, watching inappropriate videos on the internet can be a female challenge too, but because of the way God put men and women together in something we call “human nature”, this particular chal-lenge is basically a male challenge. Overwhelmingly, it is women who make the inappropriate videos, but it is men who consume them.) When a man struggles with such temptations, I often say, “Sometimes a passion cannot be eliminated in the regular way of doing things. The fire of this particular passion can only be diminished by a fire that comes from a bigger fire. A bigger passion is needed to capture the male imagination. A more intense desire is needed to help allow the other fire to burn out on its own, for lack of fuel. But I digress. So, please visit the following YouTube channel.

It’s called: Unlike Other Nations, and it takes you farther

into the lengths and depths of Catholic theology. This episode is called: “JESUITS SAY THE DARNEST THINGS.” In five minutes, you’ll learn something about the Jesuits that 99.5% of Catholics don’t know.

OUT WITH THE OLD…….

IN WITH THE NEW…….

Very special thanks to the ladies of the altar and rosary society for funding the re-upholstering of our sanctuary chairs. Watch this space in future bulletins for more in-formation on future news and events. Like a Lenten bible study and Soup Night.

Your St. James’ Maintenance funds at work. Since our precious little historical parish lacks some of life’s usual modern conveniences, like reliable electric power, our plant really depends on back electricity by means of a generator. Unfortunately, Sag hall’s generator was deemed too expensive to repair. You know what that means. So as you can see…

Seventh Ordinary Sunday Page Three

WHAT THE WORLD HAS FORGOTTEN by Kim Lee We spend plenty of money on text-books, activities, courses and other things that we believe would make us

"successful", all for temporary gratifica-tion. We go out of our way to spend on mere

keys that might open doors, yet when it comes to serving God, the slightest thing makes people moan. Even our time is so pre-cious that we can spend it on everything, but God. But who are we kidding? Are you really choosing temporary, POSSIBLE grati-fication over ETERNAL LIFE? Seriously?! Here are some of the comments we're all familiar with: "Oh, C.C.D.is open tomorrow. That's another hour wasted". "I'm busy and I want to see my friends. I don't get to see them that often, so I'll skip Mass this time round". "I'll go to the other parish this weekend because the priest there finishes Mass faster". "I have so much work to do, I don't have time to pray or to do any-thing in the church for free. I need to earn money for everything I do". So, what God are we really serving? The one who loves us and wants to bless us with His presence for all eternity, who will walk with us, if only we ask? Or are we just serving our selfish desires like greed and want for money? What do you really desire? It seems that a book for catechism class is deemed a burden, unnecessary in the eyes of some, because education (academically) or extra-curricular activities take priority. However, the world has so many issues today. Why? Because we fail to educate our young people in such a way they develop their full potential in all areas of life, including their spiritual lives. When parents and family members fail to set a good example to their children, it is no wonder that they stray from the faith and disap-pear after confirmation, or worse still, after first communion! It is sad to see this happening in more and more places. So, what can we do to try and turn things around? Start by cultivating a culture of prayer within the family. If you feel you don't know how to pray, there are plenty of resources online that you can turn to – EWTN and Catholic Online, or even speak to the priest in your nearest Catholic church. Talk about God with your friends and family. This might seem hard at first, but I'm not asking you to shove down people's throats that God loves them and if they don't convert they'll burn in hell! No, I'm asking you to show them by your life that God loves them, and to comfort them with this fact as they go through the struggles of life. I'm asking you to be there for them, as a physical and living example of God's love, to show them and lead them to the Truth. Encourage especially young people, but generally everyone as well, to get involved with church ministries. The more involved you are, the less likely you'll leave. It also provides a support network and Catholic friends to discuss with and share your lives with, which is healthy for growing in the spiritual life. These are just a few things you could do to change your percep-tion and attitude, but remember, always pray and ask for God's guidance on how best to approach your situation, and if neces-

sary, ask your local parish priest for help. Focus on what can give you eternal life - the living water, instead of on the worldly things society tells us to indulge in. God bless you all and know you have my prayers. Let's help people know there's something so much more to life than the next meal. Tell them that there is a God who loves them and will be with them all the days of their life. Go out to the whole world and spread the Good News. Editors Note: Do our young people discuss or seek out ques-tions faith being passed down from their grandparents? At the same time as grandparents what atmosphere do we create about our own practice of the faith when are grandchildren come to visit? Are we living examples in the ways of faith? Do we en-courage awe and wonder that ask questions? What will our grandchildren remember us for? Are we dedicated to living and participating in parish life? Or did someone occasionally bring us to Mass and nothing more? Deacon John Wilkinson, C.K.M.
