FROM THE DESK OF THE PASTOR, FR. THOMAS KOYS, M.A.,S.T.L.

It was a cold Easter morning but our souls were warmed by the Easter morning sunrise atop Centenni-al Hill. Oliver Carver crosses the threshold of faith, receiving his First Holy Communion from Fr. James Socias. One special little man. Did you catch these? WORCESTER, Mass., April 4, 2018/Christian News-wire/ -- A firestorm of outrage erupted over blasphe-mous claims made by Prof. Tat Siong Benny Liew, chair of New Testament Studies at the College of the Holy Cross in Worcester, Massachusetts, that Jesus was an erotic "drag king." Catholic laity from across Massachusetts plan to gather in front of Holy Cross on Saturday, April 7, at 11:00 AM for a Rosary of Reparation, and to deliver a faith-filled message to the Jesuit-run college: Prof Liew should disavow his attack against Christ or resign his teaching position at the Catholic college. The Most Rev. Robert J. McManus, bishop of the Diocese of Worcester, called

Liew's writings "blasphemous" and added that if he "...disavows them, then he must state so publicly, so as not to create confusion about the nature of Christ." According to The Fenwick Review, Prof. Liew uses the Gospel of St. John in his writings to claim that Jesus Christ was an impure "cross-dresser" who had "queer desires," and eroticizes the Passion and Cruci-fixion of Our Lord, and uses unrepeatable language to attack the holy purity of Jesus and His Apostles. A network of young Catholics, gathered more than 16,045 petitions, urging Holy Cross president Fr. Philip L. Boroughs, S.J. to "correct the scandal" and "remove Prof. Tat-Siong Benny Liew, Chair of New Testament Studies, for openly attacking the Sacred Person of Our Lord Jesus Christ with unrepeatable blasphemy."

According to a California tourism website, there’s a new kind of vacationing allurement. If you are plan-ning a trip to California’s majestic National Parks, you’ll find tourism organizations dedicated to vaca-tions that specialize in pot smoking.

“Brandon Gillespie is daring to organize a walkout against abortion. Will his public school allow such thing? He's not sure it will, but we should pray more young people see what he sees. Brandon is in the school where a teacher was suspended for wondered if an abortion protest would be allowed just as the “anti-gun walk out” was allowed.” The “pro-life” walk-out was planned for Wednesday, April 11. The adult-organized 17 minute walkouts protesting gun violence got plenty of administrative and media sup-port at many schools. If you haven’t heard about Brandon’s walk out by the time you read this note, you can be sure it went unnoticed.

Third Sunday of Easter Page Three

THE DEVIL IS A REAL THREAT TO CHRISTIAN LIFE, NOT A MYTH, POPE SAYS:

VATICAN CITY (CNS) -- The path to holiness does not in-volve wrestling with some abstract boogeyman, but in-volves a "constant struggle against the devil, the prince of evil," Pope Francis said.

In his new apostolic exhortation, "Gaudete et Exsul-tate" ("Rejoice and Be Glad"), released by the Vatican April 9th, the pope urged Christians not to think of the devil as an intangible construct but rather "a personal being who assails us."

"We should not think of the devil as a myth, a representa-tion, a symbol, a figure of speech or an idea," the pope wrote. "This mistake would leave us to let down our guard, to grow careless and end up more vulnerable."

Taking advantage of that vulnerability, he added, the devil "does not need to possess us. He poisons us with the ven-om of hatred, desolation, envy and vice."

Throughout his papacy, Pope Francis has warned of the presence of the devil and the dangers of going to hell if one doesn't turn away from sin.

Recently, however, doubts were cast on the pope's beliefs on hell and the consequences of sin when Eugenio Scalfari, a co-founder and former editor of La Repubblica, an Italian daily, claimed that Pope Francis said, "Hell does not exist."

The Italian journalist has explained on more than one occa-sion that he does not take notes or record his conversations with the pope; he re-creates them afterward from memory, including the material he puts in quotation marks.

Shortly after the interview was published in March, the Vati-can issued a statement pointing out that Scalfari's article "is a product of his own reconstruction in which the actual words pronounced by the pope are not cited."

In his apostolic exhortation on "the call to holiness in the modern world," the pope said Christian life isn't merely a struggle against human weaknesses or worldly mentalities but a spiritual battle against a very real threat.

"We will not admit the existence of the devil if we insist on regarding life by empirical standards alone, without a super-natural understanding," he wrote.

While acknowledging that in biblical times there were "limited conceptual resources" to understand the difference between demonic possession and mental illness, the pope said it should not "lead us to an oversimplification that would conclude that all the cases related in the Gospel had to do with psychological disorders and hence that the devil does not exist or is not at work."

The path toward holiness, he explained, is a constant battle and without the "powerful weapons" of prayer, the sacra-ments and works of charity, Christians "will be prey to failure or mediocrity."

"If we become careless, the false promises of evil will easily seduce us," the pope said. In the fight against the devil, Pope Francis added, cultivating good, progressing in the spiritual life and growing in love are the best ways to counter evil. However, those who choose to remain neutral and "renounce the ideal of giving themselves generously to the Lord, will never hold out."

"Christian triumph is always a cross, yet a cross which is at the same time a victorious banner, borne with aggressive tenderness against the assaults of evil," he said.

Matthew 5:12–5:12 12Rejoice and be glad, for your reward is great in heaven, for in the same way they persecuted the prophets who were before you.
