SUMMARY
This report tabulates respirable dust concentrations and compositions atLady Victoria Colliery for the period April, 1971 to March, 1972.Information regarding seams worked, outputs, methods of working', dustsuppression and manpower together with the associated dust concentrationsis preBented in a series of face charts.
At Lady Victoria Colliery the coal face mean respirable dust concentrationwas 2.8 mg/m . The mean ash content of respirable dust sampled was 39per cent and the mean quartz content of the ash 27 per cent, representinga concentration of 0.29

1. INTRODUCTION
This report describes the environmental measurements made at Lady VictoriaColliery during the period April, 1971 to March, 1972« . Routine dustmeasurements were made with the K.R.E. Gravimetric Sampler, Type 113A.
The stratification of manpower and method of sampling, almost exclusivelyby volunteer instrument carrier, were as described previously (Johnston &Thomas, 1972).
Dust concentrations, which form the bulk of the measurements, are presentedmainly in a series of charts with relevant comment in footnotes0 Detailedon the charts are mean concentrations and compositional data for differentsites and occupation in each face area,,
The report gives general information about the colliery and notes occupation-al groups for which volunteer carriers were not obtained. The relationshipbetween dust concentrations at control sampling points in return roadways andon faces is examined and "total dust" concentrations are noted for someoccupational groups*
2. LADY VICTORIA COLLIERY
2*1 Colliery details
Location : Lady Victoria ia situated at Newtongrange in thesouthern part of the Lothians coalfield about onendle from its eastern limitc
Seams worked : The three seams worked during the period, indescending order, were the Splint (24:850)*,Kailbladea (24:871) and Parrot (24:940).
Quarterly output : April - June 1971 115 764July - September 1971 7.2 943October - December 1971 68 581January - March 1972 27 403 (National Strike)
Faces : Five faces worked during the period, all byAndertpn shearer,, Usually three faces in
/ production at ono time,
2.2 Ventilation and dust suppression
Average air quantities, temperatures and relative humidities taken in returnroads of faces are shown in Tables 1 - 5, Air quantities were taken fromthe colliery records and temperatures were taken by P.F.R» investigators.
The main methods of dust suppression, noted in the tables, were gel ampoules, and spray clusters on shearers. All transfer and loading points wereequipped with mist sprays.
Dust respirators were not usually worn at this colliery due to high tempera-tures and humidities on all faces.
* National Seam Correlation Code.
2.
2.3 Manpower and occupational groups
The total colliery population.at the end of the year was approximately 920,of whom 301 were classed as faceworkers, 459 as non-faceworkers undergroundand 160 as surface workers0
The number of occupational groups in 1971 was 33 -

3. SAMPLING AND EVALUATION
3.1 Sampling programme
Sampling was carried out mainly by means of volunteer instrument carriers(Johnston, 1972). The "random collier" technique was used only for surfaceoccupational groups where it waa not practicable to have volunteers.
The allocation of sampling effort is summarised in Table 6.

There were no unsampled groups during the year.
The volunteers carried as and when requested by the investigators but notmore than twenty times in the year,
3,2' Sampling and evaluation
The sampling methods and evaluation of samples, including determination ofcomposition and "total" dusts were as described previously (Johnston, 1972).
Compositional analysis of the respirable dust was carried out at theInstitute of Occupational Medicine and consisted of the determination foreach occupational group of the ash, quartz, kaolin, mica, calcium andmagnesium carbonate and iron carbonate contents of samples (Harrison, 1972/3),
4. RESULTS AND DISCUSSION
4»1 Faceworkers
Tables-1-5 show the mean concentrations of respirable dust for faceoccupational groups in each quarter of the year. Mean.ash and quartzconcentrations are also given,, Detailed comment on the face results areshown as footnotes to these tables.
4.2 Non-Faceworkers .
Details of mean concentrations and composition are summarised at Table 7for non-faceworkers groups0

Dust concentrations away from tho faces were generally low. It will be seenfrom Table 7 that the majority of the development samples were taken in coalheadings where the dust concentration was greater than the one stone heading. Also the high quartz concentration, shown for the Officials group (E2l) is dueto 10 out of 13 of the samples having been taken on 1st East face in the ParrotSeam, where the quartz concentrations were much higher than for the other faces.

TABLE 5
4.3 jSnylyonniental summary
Table 8 (at end of repox*t) gives the mean respirable dust concentrations forfacesy elsewhere underground and surface together vdth the correspondingconcentrations for the preceding two years. Compositional data are alsogiven for each face*
The Coalface mean respirable concentration was 2.8 mg/m^ compared with 2.9and 3.2 for 1970 and 1969 respectively,,
The quartz content of samples on l\Tce 1 Bast face i*as relatively high (over13 per cent) and gave a mean quartz concentration of 0044 mg/m^ for the face»
4.4 Relatlonshi-p between control point ajid face concentratiAns,
The mean respirable dust concentrations at the face control points (70m alongthe return road) are given in Tables 1-5 and from Table 8 it can be seen thatthe ratio of return road concentration to face concentration for coal-gettingoperations ranged from 1»38 to 3»29» with an overall colliery mean value of2o220 This ratio has risen steadily since 1968 (la25) and is much higherthan the 1,4 used by Jacobsen, Eae & Walton (1969) in the Interim Standards'Studye
4.5 Total,. dust measurements .
The measurement of "total dust concentration" continued as described byJohnston & Thomas (l972)e Total dust concentrations were derived from totalweight of dust (elutriator and filter) deposited in the gravimetric samplerand sample volumeSo When these observations are grouped by face site as inTable 9 » it can be seen that the ratio of total to respirable concentrationvaries from point to point along the faces, being generally higher at theintake end and lower towards the return roadway .

On average, total dust concentrations are six to seven times respirableconcentrations.
• 5, BEOOMMEND4TIONS
1. Relatively high concentrations with high quartz contents were noted on theface, return stable and control point samples of Ko0.l East, Parrot, face*Management were notifiedo Dust conditions on this face should be kept undersurveillance.
2<> The ratio of return road to face concentration at this colliery hasapparently risen from 1.25 in 1968 to 2.22 in 1971* However, too few controlpoint samples were taken for the later figure to be regarded aa a confidentestimate. More control point, sampling is roccamendod0
