The future challengestoday’s know-howLooking back at Nokia Foundation’s ten years, two innovationsrise above the others during this period. In addition to the explo-sive growth of mobile communications, the Internet has revolu-tionized the way people communicate, acquire information,

and, increasingly, the way they buy and sell goods.

The growth of the Internet has furthered the evolution andexpansion of the 1997 Nokia Foundation Award recipient LinusTorvalds’ Linux operating system into a universal operatingsystem. Linux is a good example of a global, networked innova-tion and its effect on society. Linux’s open source is a centraloperating model also in the commercial software development

of the future.

Indeed, many of the innovations brought about by the Inter-net have been adopted with amazing speed. Online purchasesby Finns surpassed the one-billion-euro mark in 2002. It’s a grow-ing trend: This year the two-billion-mark is being chased. Themajority of Finns do their banking over the Internet even

though these services have been available only since 1998.

The convergence that is currently discussed so much marksthe merging of home, mobile, Internet, and technologies andbusiness models. A new branch of industry is emerging to chal-lenge the current way of operating. To consumers, who are atthe center of it all, technology should only show as a seamlessenabler of services, while the business models encourage the takeup of services. Which operating models and technologies will betriumphant is not yet clear. This situation holds a lot of potential

also for Finnish innovation, which the Foundation supports. In order for innovation cooperation to be possible, Finland

must have universities that can realistically compete with theworld’s leading educational facilities across different disciplines. To stay at the cutting edge of development, it is important forus to actively gravitate towards international research and de-velopment programs and networks. The real disruptions thatlead to genuine renewal are found in research that boldly pushes

the boundaries.

Nokia Foundation has characteristically shown this kind ofboldness and innovative pursuit of new areas and directionsby the awards it has handed out. I hope other players de-monstrate the same kind of curiosity and daring, as we togetherseek tomorrow’s successes. We need to push specialization, networking, and the development of our know-how to the next

level again and again. Each era has its visionaries who have questioned existing

ways of doing things and who have looked even further ahead.

The future challenges today’s know-how and requires us toalways look at things from a new perspective. Only by investingin the top know-how can we participate in buildingtomorrow’s innovations.

Moving ahead withthe boundless energyof a ten-year-oldTen-year-olds are typically very active and still boldly curious, yet they are capable of cooperating and considering the rami-fications of their actions.

The same thing can be said of the Nokia Foundation as itapproaches the end of its tenth year. Since 1995 the Founda-tion has gradually established its position in the Finnish foun-dation arena with its specialty in supporting scientific re-search, education and innovations in information, telecom-munication, and data communication technology in Finland.Yet the Nokia Foundation still aspires to support new develop-

ment in its sector and expand its know-how.Nokia Foundation is best described by its continuous in-

teraction with industry and academia. Two factors foster thisconnection: The Nokia Foundation was established by NokiaOyj, and the majority of the Foundation’s board members rep-resent Finnish universities and colleges. As a result of fruitfulinteraction, students of the telecommunications sector havebecome interested in postgraduate studies. The number ofscholarship applications has steadily increased during thefirst years, climbing sharply at the turn of the millennium.

For Nokia, the Foundation has reinforced the creation of astrong information technology competence base in Finland.Supporting the visits of top experts to Finland and the foreignvisits of Finnish postgraduate students has contributed to this. All in all, the Nokia Foundation scholarships and Awards haveboosted the respect and profile of the information technologysector in Finland.

The Nokia Foundation has put special focus on supportingthe postgraduate studies of talented, young people regardlessof the discipline. Investing in talent is always worthwhile. Atthe turn of the millennium, the Foundation started awardingauthors of educational books for the IT sector.

When Juhani Kuusi, Jaakko Astola, Jorma Lammasniemi,Kaj G. Lindén, Yrjö Neuvo and Heikki Saikkonen convened atthe Nokia Foundation’s first board meeting on June 20, 1995,

could they envision the Foundation’s ultimate and influen-tial support in the sector of scientific development and edu-cational activities in Finland? This is what the Foundation istoday. A good place from which to move forward, to mirrorand envision the challenges of future know-how in Finlandand abroad.

Congratulations to the ten-year-old and may the next tenbe as energetic.

Funders of research – whether an authority that fundsuniversities or a decision-maker allocating foundationscholarships – are perpetually faced with the question:How to know if the project seeking funding is really onthe brink of new information or innovation. To be able toassess the significance of the research, the decision-makermust be familiar with the characteristics of different typesof research and have a deeper understanding of the timeperspectives of major innovations.

Basic and applied research – or frontier researchThe first starting point for research funding is that basicresearch and applied research are different by nature.Today the buzz word is frontier research, which is usedin an effort to avoid the words basic and applied. Frontierresearch is trailblazing research. There must be a reason forconducting all research. But the reasons differ dependingthe phase of the research.

Applied research, i.e. research that aims for a definedgoal, is often supported through programs called “focusareas.” As such, it is believed that the area and even thekinds of results and applications that are hoped for andexpected are known. As focus areas, e.g. nanotechnologyor microtechnology doesn’t reveal anything about thetime span of the research.

In general, applied research is a matter of looking fora solution to a clearly known problem. However, the diffi-culty emerges from the fact that, for really new findings, sufficient advance knowledge of research results is al-ready impossible by definition: It isn’t new if it’s alreadyknown in advance. On the other hand, what often hap-pens is that when moving from basic research to applica-tion, new basic research emerges on the next level, until iteventually leads to a product.

Basic research aims specifically for totally new infor-mation. That’s why it is better to support talent, i.e. toweigh the previous demonstrations of researchers, thanto support content that seems promising.

The second starting point for research funding is thatdifferent institutions produce different research environ-

ments. Applied research and work group support is bettersuited to facilities that are organized into permanentwork communities. And support for basic research andindividuals is a more natural fit for independent founda-tions.

Nokia Research Center’s strategic research teamshave clear models, focus areas and programs accordingto which research is carried out. The Research Center’slaboratories, meanwhile, conduct more exploratory basicresearch. There is also strategic basic research, meaningbasic research in areas from which measurable benefits inone way or another are expected within a finite time.

Foundations supplement the organized research fieldby supporting risk-taking, the exploration of totally newpaths, and the development of innovations. The most im-portant contribution of foundations is often the extratime talented researchers need to develop ideas and tofollow new research paths that suddenly emerge. Wejust have to trust the intuition of a talented person.

8 A Decade of Activities

Time span of researchThe third starting point for research funding is to gaininsight into the time span required by different researchwork. On a very general level, it could be said that changesare overestimated in the short term, but underestimatedin the long term.

Five years from now life will probably be very muchlike it is today, but fifty years from now it will be totallydifferent. The rationale behind this is the observationthat in 1999 people lived essentially the same as they didin 2004, while in 1954 the world was totally different, lacking most of the revolutionizing inventions we nowtake for granted.

The significance of a long time span becomes evenclearer when examining the different phases of the in-dustrial revolution. The steam engine revolutionizedproduction and transportation in the early 1800s. Electri-city changed industry and the operating environment inthe early 1900s. In both cases, it took several decades beforethe full effect of the new technology created by both ofthe original inventions could be seen.

The main question of our time is to understand thenature of the ongoing, third industrial revolution. Wemust try to discern whether the momentum of the changeis just at the beginning and whether the scope is growingor diminishing.

In general, it takes at least five years for basic researchresults to materialize. Concrete products that can becommercialized often emerge some ten or twenty yearsafter the original inventions. And changing the entireoperating environment takes several decades.

The key is an intact and functioning information re-fining chain. This requires cooperation, networking andcommunication at all phases.

It is important that the history of the technology de-veloped and applied by Nokia is written with sufficientscope and detail. It could give the people carrying outand supporting today’s basic research and product deve-lopment a better understanding of the time spans of re-search and its role as the engine driving the evolving in-

dustry. The following examines a few examples impor-tant for the mobile telecommunications industry fromthe perspective of the research time span.

Antenna technology, speech coding, directional microphoneThe initial stimulus of wireless communications andantenna technology are found in basic research datingback to the late 1800s. Maxwell’s equations in 1865 (theyear Nokia was established!) and Hertz’s radio wave testsin 1887 created the foundation for understanding electro-magnetic radiation. The conventional dipole antenna isbased on further development of Maxwell’s theories.

The planar antennas used in mobile phones had beenaround for decades, but it took a long time before thescientific community developing them converged withmobile phone manufacturers. The first attempt wasmade in 1985 when developing the Mobira Citymanhandheld phone, but the new technology didn’t catch on.Development work was restarted in 1996 and the firstmobile phones equipped with a built-in antenna appearedon the markets a few years later.

Practical testing of data transfer was done in Finlandback in the early 1960s, but a commercial breakthroughwouldn’t be seen for two decades; in the 1990s it becameone of society’s most important basic structures.

The mathematical modeling behind speech codingstarted in the 1970s. Signal processing progressed on itsown paths and the signal processors enabling real-timeoperations evolved. The shift from analog to digital phonesystems fuelled the standardization work, in which Nokiahas been a frontrunner.

A third example is the directional microphone. Therequired fundamental know-how emerged through Nokia-funded research conducted at the Tampere University ofTechnology around 1990. Microphone arrays and the formingof the directional pattern by combining the informationobtained from more than one microphone with the DSP

algorithm has been a target of research at Nokia ResearchCenter continuously since 1996. Over the years, the research

has advanced from basic research to product develop-ment, and a commercial application is probably possiblein the near future.

BluetoothBluetooth creates a wireless connection via radio link tovarious devices within a 10-meter range and allows theuser more freedom of mobility. Bluetooth’s roots at Nokiadate back about ten years.

Research on the topic started in Salo under the nameof Low Power RF, with the goal being an RF technology-based wireless connection as an alternative to infrared. In 1996 a product development project was launched, and the first demonstration was presented the followingyear. Upon discovery that Intel and Ericsson were devel-oping similar technology, forces were joined and thename Bluetooth was launched in 1997. Two years later, with several companies involved in the developmentwork, version 1.0 was deployed. The first Nokia productwith Bluetooth functionality (the Nokia 6310) saw itsmarket launch a couple of years later, i.e. some six yearsafter the product development project had started.

It may very well be that we are just now at thethreshold of Bluetooth technology becoming more widespread. At the moment there are more than 2 000 compa-nies in the consortium.

Polyphonic ring tonesThe Nokia melody was first designed to function as asimple beeping, which was used in mobile phones someten years ago. The support for monophonic melodiesenabled the creation of simple ring tone melodies. Pro-ducing more musical ring tones required numeroustechnological changes. Polyphonic music utilizes a widefrequency band and requires better sound reproduction. The traditional sound production with buzzer technology

had to be replaced with more expensive loudspeakertechnology.

The next breakthrough in the ring tone area was theMIDI (Musical Instruments Digital Interface) standard, which has been used in synthesizers since the early1980s. MIDI enabled realistic polyphonic sounds thatreplicate several notes at once. The music technologyindustry and communications industry (3GPP) standard-ization organizations reached a consensus on supportingthe SP-MIDI standard.

SP-MIDI’s commercial significance lies in the standard’sinteroperability, which utilizes scalability. Two differentdevices can share SP-MIDI content even if their polyphonyis at different levels. The musical scalability hierarchy isdefined by the composer as part of the composing work.Nokia was the first to enter the market with a productsupporting the SP-MIDI specification: The Nokia 3510 waslaunched in May 2002.

Today SP-MIDI is the most widely supported polyphonicring tone format on the market. The Mobile DLS andMobile XMF standards, adopted in 2004, support a widerspectrum of musical instruments, voices, and sound effects.

A Dec ade of Activities

A major supporter ofinformation and telecom technology

Nokia’s social responsibility as backgroundWhen Nokia Board of Directors decided at the share-

holders’ meeting in March 1995 to establish the Nokia

Foundation, the decision was based on the need to sup-

port the scientific research, education and innovations of

information, telecommunication and data communication

technology in Finland.

The idea to establish the Nokia Foundation had gradually

matured inside Nokia. It was sparked by the numerous

sponsorship requests received from universities and student

associations to which Nokia wanted to respond favorably.

Nokia also wanted to profile its own sector’s expertise

through the Foundation.

“When establishing the Foundation, the aim was to create

clear, socially orthodox frameworks to support students

and researchers and to publicly advocate social responsi-

bility,” says Juhani Kuusi, Chairman of the Nokia Foun-

dation from 1995–2003.

By establishing the Foundation, the aim was to ensure

that Nokia would use the often limited resources of uni-

versities in a socially sustainable way and support the

operations of universities by giving scholarships, describe

Simo Luiro and Markku Ranta, Nokia Foundation re-

presentatives from 1995–2000. The Foundation also

offered a suitable framework for researcher support rath-

er than the allocation of individual scholarships.

University and industry interactionFrom its establishment the Foundation aimed to take

into consideration the various issues related to student

life and research education. It was advantageous to Nokia

Foundation’s activities that, right from the start, the

Chairman, the board members and the representatives

of the Nokia Foundation had personal experience with

the university and research world. Similarly, it was un-

derstood that even though the use of the scholarships

was often very practical, it was important for the scholar-

ship recipients to receive recognition from a major,

world-class company for the research they had already

done or would do.

The newly created Foundation wanted to encourage

high-level, trail-blazing research and the fast track to

theses completion at a young age, but the few applicants

that did apply in the first rounds had set modest goals.

Establishing research educational facilities under the

Ministry of Education changed the situation and offered

a clear opportunity to continue research and to engage

in postgraduate, university studies.

“Within a few years, the interest in postgraduate studies

increased. The interest in basic telecommunications re-

search had grown as a direct result of our contribution,”

notes Yrjö Neuvo, Senior Vice President, Technology

Advisor of Nokia, and a Nokia Foundation board member.

Vice Rector, Professor Markku Kivikoski at the Tampere

University of Technology attributes the growing number

of applications to the higher profile of the Foundation.

12 A Decade of Activities

“When information spreads, there are more applications

received and, coincidentally, the quality of the applica-

tions rises,” assesses Kivikoski, a Nokia Foundation board

member from 2000–2002.

Four grant categoriesIn 1995, the Nokia Foundation’s first year of operation,

the Board of Foundation decided to allocate three differ-

ent grants. The Nokia Scholarship, Nokia Visiting Fellow,

and Nokia Team award formed a working basis also for

the types of grants that followed in the years to come.

Researchers aspiring to defend their doctoral theses are

the most important for the Foundation’s operations. In

terms of money and numbers, the majority of the grants

are Nokia Scholarships awarded to this end. Initially, the

goal of the scholarships was to support postgraduate

students, particularly the younger ones. It was intended

for full-time postgraduate study, and awarded for up to

the duration of two years.

In 2004, the Foundation had four categories of grants:

Nokia Visiting Fellow, Nokia Visiting Researcher, Nokia

Educational Award and Nokia Scholarship.

Nokia Visiting Fellow scholarships are granted to distin-

guished foreign professors or experts visiting and work-

ing in Finland, or respectively to Finnish meritorious pro-

fessors or experts to work at a respected foreign univer-

sity.

The objective of the Nokia Visiting Researcher scholar-

ship is to support the formation of new collaborative re-

lationships and stronger research coalitions by promo-

ting research exchange programs. The scholarship is li-

mited to newly graduated researchers.

The purpose of the Nokia Educational Award is to sup-

port the development of education in information or tele-

communications technology or the sectors pivotally sup-

porting them. The Nokia Educational Award can also be

granted as recognition for work already completed.

Nokia Scholarships are granted for postgraduate studies

in Finland or abroad to individuals pursuing a doctoral

degree in information or telecommunications technology

or in areas supporting the development of these branches

of science.

Scholarship applicationtopics change with the timesThere was a big jump in the number of applications re-

ceived by the Foundation after the turn of the millen-

nium. By 2005, the Foundation had awarded its basic

scholarship, the Nokia Scholarship, almost 500 times.

The number of scholarships granted has followed the in-

creasing number of scholarship applications received. An

average of nearly one-third of the scholarship applica-

tions lead to a favorable decision.

Most of the topics receiving a grant during recent years

have been related to multimedia method and application

development, software development, and the develop-

ment of radio frequency electronics. After the establish-

ment of the Foundation, most of the topics in the mid

1990s were directly related to the development of com-

puting efficiency, the development of mobile phones,

and the development of network hardware and circuits,

i.e. to developments that are visible in the information

technology of existing products.

During the Foundation’s early years, there was a prevailing

assumption in universities and colleges that a scholar-

ship application had to be somehow connected to

Nokia’s mobile phones or networks. During the past ten

years, the Nokia Foundation has boldly and broadmindedly

awarded scholarships also to promising researchers, whose

work only slightly touches upon technology.

Topi Mäenpää

Topi Mäenpää is an entrepreneur whose company is stillgoing through its interesting early phases. Intopii Oy willemploy four people this autumn, and the company hashuge growth expectations. Mäenpää’s company providesexpertise, product development, and research services incomputer vision and signal processing methods to othercompanies.

Mäenpää researched computer vision as a student at theUniversity of Oulu. The topic of his academic dissertation, which he completed in 2003, was “The local binary patternapproach to texture analysis – extensions and applications.”

“I’ve been working on developing a computer visionmethod that can significantly improve the analysis accu-racy and speed of industrial quality-control applications. The method analyzes the surface structure present in adigital image to facilitate the identification of defects, theclassification of materials into different quality catego-ries, and, for instance, to automatically search for speci-fic areas, such as forests from aerial photos,” the Oulunative explains.

Mäenpää’s computer vision method differs from thosepreviously presented in that it tolerates uneven andvarying illumination as well as changes in the positioningand scale of the targets to be analyzed. Mäenpää receiveda Nokia Scholarship for his thesis in 2002.

According to Mäenpää, computer vision is starting tomake a breakthrough in industrial use, especially in qualitycontrol. “The goal of the thesis research was to develop amethod that is scientifically recognized as well as practicaland functional, a method that can be applied directly,e.g. in industrial quality control. I think this has beenvery successful.”

Intopii and Mäenpää aim to commercialize a computervision-based product during this year. “Work is beingdone all the time. Our longer-term goal is to build Intopiiinto a respected commercial research center,” Mäenpääpaints the future.

14 A Decade of Activities

“In the future, the Foundation must continue to support

the postgraduate studies and research of talented young

people, regardless of the discipline. Rewarding talent is

always worthwhile,” points out Tero Ojanperä, Head of

Nokia Research Center and Chairman of the Nokia Foun-

dation since 2004.

Grant for researcher visitsand educational materialsRight from the start, the support of researcher exchange

and researcher cooperation in the area of information,

telecom and data communications technology has been

integral to the Foundation’s operations. Researcher visits

to and from Finland have been seen as a concrete, inter-

national activity that has contributed to the develop-

ment of longer term collaborative relationships among

universities.

“International research cooperation is important in the

researcher circles because it is essential to collect new

ideas from any given branch from all around the world,”

notes Yrjö Neuvo. The Foundation’s role is clearly two-

fold: On one hand, it offers broad support for researcher

education, and, on the other hand, it promotes the transfer

and development of leading expertise through researcher

visits.

The Foundation has granted its Educational Award since

2000. Some of the awards have been granted to work

groups, by 2005 the Foundation had granted 50 educa-

tional awards. “The goal has been to support relevant

educational materials for differ-ent levels of education,”

explains Juhani Kuusi.

Leon Chua, Professor and Director of Nonlinear ElectronicsLaboratory in Berkeley, the U.S. visited Finland in 2002–2003.“My main objective for visiting Finland was to stimulateresearch on cellular nonlinear networks (CNN) with theresearch group under professors Veikko Porra and KariHalonen. I believed that the expertise from this groupcould be exploited to design a universal CNN cell.”

Puheenvuoro

A Decade of Activities 15

“The Nokia Foundation scholarship was a really greatsurprise. It’s nice that even this kind of ‘shoveling work’can be rewarded,” reflects Professor Tommi Mikkonen, head of the laboratory at the Tampere University ofTechnology, Institute of Software Systems, about the NokiaEducational Award he received in 2003.

Mikkonen’s mobile programming book was created outof a practical need. When teaching mobile programmingfor the first time, the only materials available weretransparencies, and when reviewing exams he becameconvinced of the need to find better teaching materials.During the second year, Mikkonen created a handout, butthe theses and their references remained problematic.“I thought it would be reasonable to offer students theopportunity to reference a real book, so I decided toagain improve the material and to aim for a book.”

Now Mikkonen’s book is used by students at the TampereUniversity of Technology, the University of Tampere, andthe Universities in Turku, Helsinki, and Oulu. The mobileprogramming course has been conveyed to several differ-ent educational institutions since 2002.

Why has the basic literature on mobile programmingbeen so limited? Mikkonen thinks mobile programming

Chua’s theme is to use CNN as a unifying paradigm for ex-plaining many phenomena from complexity theory.“The fundamental concept of local activity which I devel-oped recently is used as a powerful quantitative tool forunderstanding complexity, as well as predicting quantita-tively the parameter space where brain-like informationprocessing and complex phenomena are possible.”

During his stay in Finland Chua gave intensive courseson cellular neural networks and their application innonlinear information processing, synergetic, self-organ-ized systems and complexity. He also presented severallectures at various conferences and research institutionsand presented a state-of-the-art lecture at Nokia.

Leon Chua has been with University of California, Berke-ley since 1970 and has received many international prizesduring his long career. He was awarded seven U.S. patentsand eight honorary doctorates from major European uni-versities and Japan. Chua is also a recipient of the “top 15

cited authors in engineering” award in 2002, chosen fromthe Current Contents (ISI) database of all cited papers inthe engineering disciplines in the citation index from1991 to October 2001, from all branches of engineering. He was elected a foreign member of the European Academyof Sciences (Academia Europea) in 1997. In 2002 LeonChua was awarded Nokia Visiting Fellow Award.

According to Kuusi, it is important particularly in the rapid-

ly evolving areas that educational materials correspond

with the cutting edge of development and that the ma-

terials are available to meet the needs of students at differ-

ent levels and are also in the Finnish language.

The awarded educational books are often basic text-

books for the areas that the Foundation supports. “Without

exception, the books awarded by the Foundation are serious,

topical textbooks that are actually used at various levels

in academic institutions,” says Erkki Oja, Professor at the

Helsinki University of Technology and a member of the

Board of Nokia Foundation from 1999–2001.

The topics of the awarded books range from software

engineering, data processing technology and telecom-

munications technology to physics books for enginee-

ring and a book about a practice firm project. “The fact

that the Foundation awards educational books, I think is

a clear reflection of its risk-taking capacity. You can always

hear afterwards whether this kind of award on educational

book was a success or a failure”, Markku Kivikoski descri-

bes.

Nokia Foundation Awards target many areasThe Nokia Foundation's most visible event of the year is

its annual ceremony in which the recipient of the Nokia

Foundation Award is announced. The recipient of the Nokia

Foundation Award receives a lot of recognition in the

Finnish media.

The Nokia Foundation Award recipient is recognized for

elevating a socially important theme to public discussion

or for contributing to an emerging technology issue.

Visuri received 4-year funding for his thesis on signalprocessing from GETA, the Graduate School of Electronics,Telecommunications and Automation. In his thesis, Visuripresented new methods for array and multichannel sig-nal processing under non-Gaussian noise assumptions.

Visuri was awarded a Nokia Visiting Researcher scholar-ship twice and once received a Nokia Scholarship for histhesis work. “For me personally, the scholarships have

“I wanted my thesis to demonstrate that we are not yetat the end of the road. When we conduct real researchwe create increasingly better materials for use in tele-communications technology. Telecommunications tech-nology has unique requirements and it requires its ownmaterials compared to electronics,” emphasizes HeliJantunen, acting Professor and a GETA (Graduate Schoolof Electronics, Telecommunications and Automation)postdoc at the Microelectronics and Material PhysicsLaboratory at the University of Oulu.

Jantunen completed the awarded thesis “A novel LowTemperature Co-firing Ceramic (LTCC) material for tele-communication devices” in 2001, less than three yearsafter undertaking the work. Jantunen came up with thetopic for her thesis after selling her company Verdera. “I hadgiven a lot of thought to the topic because it is somethingthat really interested me. It had, and still has, such greatpotential. But I’m sure that somewhere around the worldsomeone has already come up with a better LTCC material, and I guess that’s how it should be: the world goes on.”She received a Nokia Scholarship for her thesis in 2000.

The University of Oulu’s Microelectronics and MaterialPhysics Laboratory is recognized globally for its high-quality research in the area of telecommunicationstechnology and materials. Until the end of 2004, Heli

funded a significant portion of my foreign visits. Scholar-ships also act as incentives. Being awarded a scholarshipis always a nice recognition for work performed.”

At Institute Eurecom in France, Visuri was a visiting rese-archer focusing on signal processing for multi-antennasystems. In the telecommunications technology laboratoryat the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology in Zurich,Visuri worked with multi-antenna system signal proces-sing methods and their theoretical performance. “Multi-antenna technologies will have a significant role in thefourth generation wireless communications systems;and that is what I am currently working on at NokiaResearch Center.”

Jantunen’s team is working in the EU-funded MELODY(Microwave Electronics with Tunable Dielectric Layers)project, which aims to develop components with radiofrequencies that can be tuned by adjusting their electric field.

Credited with dozens of patents, Jantunen is a materialresearcher by education, but her industrial backgroundgives her great knowledge also about wireless data trans-mission and components production. Verdera, the com-pany established by Jantunen, produced ceramic filters fortelecommunications technology, primarily for PMR devices.

18 A Decade of Activities

“The Nokia Foundation Award is offered in recognition of

an activity with exceptionally far-reaching effects in infor-

mation, telecom and data communications education,

research, and development, entrepreneurialism, or admin-

istration, or for a momentous, pioneering breakthrough

in a specific area,” Juhani Kuusi specifies.

A Board of information andtelecom technology expertsThe assembly of the Board of Nokia Foundation has been

defined so that at least half of the members must be in-

formation or telecommunication technology experts

from universities, colleges, or equivalent institutions.

These members have represented Finland’s biggest uni-

versities and colleges with information and telecom

technology faculties. Almost every year, the Board of Nokia

Foundation has had representatives from the Helsinki

University of Technology, the Tampere University of

Technology, and the University of Oulu. Representatives

also from the University of Turku, the Åbo Akademi, and

the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland have partici-

pated in the board’s work.

The Board of Nokia Foundation and its Chairman are

elected for one-year terms, and they are elected by Nokia

Board of Directors based on the proposal of the Nokia

Group Executive Board. From 1995–2003, the Chairman of

the Foundation was Senior Vice President and Head of

Nokia Research Center Juhani Kuusi. Since the beginning

of 2004, the Foundation has been headed by Tero Ojan-

perä, Senior Vice President and Head of Nokia Research

Center. The Secretary General is handling the Foundation’s

practical matters: taking care of the scholarship applica-

tions and implementation of the Board’s decisions.

The Foundation set out on a principle of keeping opera-

ting expenses at a minimum, so it doesn’t have paid

employees. The aim has always been to use virtually all

the interest of the capital on the annual scholarships and

awards.

During the years, the Nokia Foundation’s ceremony has

become an important meeting place for the scientific

community and business leaders. The ceremony is held

at the end of the year in November–December. For many

people, it is the culmination of an entire year’s work, be-

cause that is when Nokia Foundation Award recipient

and the scholarship recipients are announced.

Arto Salomaa

Per capita, Finland has more theoretical informationtechnology and cryptology experts than any other country.A major part of the kudos for this should go to AcademyProfessor and Mathematician Arto Salomaa, but he refusessuch praise. “We have a very strong tradition in mathe-matics. And we have this cold climate, so you have to dosomething,” Salomaa says with a grin from his office atthe Turku Center for Computer Science.

Salomaa has received dozens of distinctions from aroundthe world. The annual Nokia Foundation Award was givento Salomaa in 1998 for his meritorious work in the world-class development of education, research and applica-tions in the field of theoretical information technologyand cryptology.

For Salomaa, the science of cryptology is just an offshootof his mathematician career. Salomaa’s most importantresearch areas are formal languages, i.e. mathematicallybased programming languages, and automata theory.Graduate studies at the University of California, Berkeleysteered Salomaa to computer science and mathematicalautomata. “My interest in cryptology resurfaced in theearly 1980s with the emergence of public key-basedcryptology.”

Public key cryptology is an encryption system in whichthe encryption key can be published freely because de-cryption of the message requires the private key that isheld only by the recipient. In the future, in the quantum-and DNA-based computer era, the current encryptionsystems will no longer be sufficient. “There will be aneed to develop new cryptology systems,” Salomaa an-ticipates.

First cryptology lectures in FinlandThe cryptology lectures Salomaa started in the 1980s atthe University of Turku were the first in the field in Finland. The lectures were very popular, and many of Salomaa’sstudents later defended their theses in cryptology. NowSalomaa’s former students are working on things likeencryption systems for mobile systems and the healthcare industry.

Salomaa has also written numerous articles, publica-tions, and textbooks, the first one was published morethan two decades ago. Salomaa believes the future ofcryptology training looks good. “Lectures today are moreinteresting, and now Turku offers more advanced coursesin addition to the basics.”

For Salomaa, cryptology is an “eternal battle between twoworlds”: As new encryption systems are developed, effortsare made also to break them. The increase and expansionin communications will also increase the need for dataencryption in the future.

Salomaa has gradually returned to his old targets of interest, formal languages and automata theory. At the moment,he is immersed in the theory of DNA computation andDNA computers. “Now I can ponder the really difficultquestions because I don’t have to come up with the an-swers,” the Academician smiles.

Professor Jarmo Takala works at the Tampere Universityof Technology’s Institute of Digital and Computer Systems, but not for the first time around. Takala started his studiesin Tampere in 1981, and then held various teaching andresearch positions, first at TUT, and then at the VTT

Technical Research Center of Finland. He then moved onto Nokia Research Center as a researcher until 1996 whenhe eventually returned to the university.

Takala’s thesis is a compilation of research reports and istitled “Real-Time Signal Processing Systems: Parallel Algo-rithms and Architectures”. “I already had results frommy earlier years at TUT, and I returned to the university fromNokia Research Center to finish my book,” remarks Takala, who is originally from Hankasalmi, in Central Finland.

The fundamental idea behind the thesis was to tell howparallel algorithms could be utilized in application-specific hardware realizations. Takala received the NokiaScholarship in 1998. “I have continued the work on theideas presented in my thesis with couple of students andthis has resulted two doctoral theses in 2004. My own re-sults have also been applied and refined in the researchteam, and that has resulted in a host of publications, onepatent, patent applications, and several theses,” Takalanotes.

For now, Takala is continuing his academic career, andhis postgraduate students are working on their theses. He doesn’t shy away from admitting: “You never knowwhere you’ll find yourself. At some point, you might runinto a situation where the grass starts looking a littlegreener on the other side of the fence.”

Eija-Liisa Kasesniemi

From text messageresearcher to mobilecommunications expertThere are few people who are as familiar with the habitsand entries of Finland’s mobile text communications asEija-Liisa Kasesniemi. In 2000, a Nokia Scholarship wasgiven to Kasesniemi’s thesis “Life in 160 characters: TheText Message Culture of Finnish Teenagers.” A few yearslater, the VTT Technical Research Center of Finland re-searcher and project manager studied the use of mobile

video, or video communications – and she is still convincedof the importance of text.

“Text is not going to disappear from mobile communica-tions. Often when introducing new technology, people goto extremes and forget about previous good solutions. After all, the arrival of television didn’t extinguish litera-ture,” Kasesniemi reminds.

Kasesniemi’s interest in researching the topic of mobiletext communications, i.e. text messages, emails, chat, and WAP, started in the mid 1990s in conjunction withthe increasing ubiquitousness of mobile phones. From1997–1999, Kasesniemi was in charge of the Tekes (theNational Technology Agency of Finland), Nokia, andSonera joint project at the University of Tampere’s Infor-mation Society Research Center, which was surveyingthe mobile communications of children and young people. In her thesis at Joensuu University, Kasesniemi researchedtext messages sent and received by young people, i.e.person-to-person communications, as well as mobilewriting in public environments like TV chat and WAP.

According to Kasesniemi, at times it has been necessaryto justify the importance of the applied mobile commu-nications research projects. “There has been little infor-mation published for the public at large because the re-sults have gone almost directly for product developmentuse. Today, the technology research teams are almost al-ways cross-scientific.”

“Now what is also needed is the understanding that it isimportant to collect user feedback already in the middleof product development. This way a problem can be tackledearly on and mistakes can be corrected quickly.”

Research of tele-communications systemsSeppo Virtanen has the distinct honor of being the Uni-versity of Turku’s first Doctor of Technology. The topic ofhis thesis, “A framework for rapid design and evaluationof protocol processors” emerged from the idea of pro-grammable processors, the structure of which could beoptimized for processing telecommunications protocols.

“The goal is for fast but accurate system-level simulationand the assessment of physical characteristics withoutthe need for port-level synthesis. Likewise, the goal hasbeen to perform these functions using economical com-puters. In the design method presented in my thesis, synthesis is carried out when a solution realizing the ori-ginal application’s requirements as well as possible hasbeen found from several different architectures based onsimulations and evaluations of physical characteristics,”notes Virtanen. Currently he works as an assistant profes-sor at the University of Turku’s Department of InformationTechnology.

Virtanen’s subject remains topical because there are onlya handful of programmable processors truly optimizedfor protocol applications that have reached the productionphase. Most commercial products are still devices thatfocus on duplicating general-purpose processing ele-ments. Likewise, the application-specific hardware de-sign methodologies are still in the development phase.

Within the next few years, two or three new theses canbe expected in Virtanen’s research area. “My hope for thefuture is a career as a university researcher and instruc-

tor. There are plenty of challenges in the development ofthe telecommunications systems and their design meth-ods.”

Virtanen received a Nokia Scholarship for his thesis re-search in 2000 and 2001. “My research work was at a criticalphase at that time. Without the scholarships, I probablywould have had to discontinue my research work andmove on to other capacities in the corporate world.”
