FUTURE Heightened focus on Evidence Based Practice Development of a stronger evidence based through more rigorous methods and

multiple , confirmatory strategies . Greater emphasis on systematic integrative reviews . Expanded local research in health care settings. Strengthening of multidisciplinary collaboration . Expanded dissemination of research findings . Increasing the visibility of nursing research . Increased focus on cultural issues and health disparities.

Synthesis of global nursing priorities indentified the following :i. Health promotion and disease prevention

ii. Promotion of health of vulnerable and marginalized communities .iii. Patient safety and quality health careiv. Development of EBP and transational researchv. Promotion of the health and well-being of older people

vi. Patient-centered care and care coordination

60s Jeanne Quint Benoliel began a program of research that had majorimpact on medicine, medical sociology, and nursing .She explained thesubjective experiences of patients following diagnosis with a life-threatening illness (1967). Physicians in the early 1960s usually did notadvise women that they had breast cancer, even following a

mastectomy. Quints (1962, 1963) seminal study of the personalexperiences of women following radial mastectomy contributed tochanges in communication and information control by physicians andnurses .

70s Kathryn Barnards research led to breakthroughs in the area ofneonatal and child development . Her research program focused on theidentification and assessment of children at risk of developmental andhealth problems , such as abused and neglected children and failure-to-thrive children (Barnard , 1973 , 1976; Barnard and Collar , 1973; Barnardet al .,1977). Her research contributed to work early interventions forchildren with disabilities , and to the field of developmentalpsychology.

80s A team of researchers headed by Dorothy Brooten engaged in studiesthat led to the development and testing of a model of site transitionalcare . Brooten and her colleagues (1986,1988,1989), forexample, conducted studies of nurse specialist-managed home follow-up services for very-low-birth-weight infants who were dischargedearly from the hospital , and later expanded to other high -risk patients(1994). The site transitional care model , developed in anticipation ofgovernment cost- cutting measures in the 1980s , has been used a s aframework for patient who are at health risk as a result of earlydischarge from hospitals , and has been recognized by numeroushealth care disciplines .

90s Many studies that have been identified as breakthroughs in nursingresearch ( Donaldson, 2000) were conducted in the 1990s. As but oneexample , several nurse researches had breakthroughs in the area ofpsychoneuroimmunology (PIN) . Barbara Swanson and Janice Zeller, for example , conducted several studies relating to HIV infection andneuropsychological function (1993, 1998) that have led to discoveries inenvironmental management as a means of improving immune systemstatus .
