  • History of the Cosmopolitan Era

Traditionally supper clubs were considered a “destination” where patrons would spend the whole evening, from cocktail hour to nightclub-style entertainment after dinner. In February 1955, Coco Chanel, recognizing that the modern woman needed to have her hands free while attending social functions, designed the double-chain shoulder strap of the 2.55 handbag. It was named after the month and year it debuted. A postage stamp cost $0.03 in 1949. 1953 ushered in a mood of sleek, slender elegance — at once young and sophisticated. Hemlines, waistlines, and hairlines all grew shorter. Although baseball and Jackie Robinson started the integration process in 1947, it really became an integrated sport in the 1950s. Willie Mays and Hank Aaron were two African American baseball players during this time. It was announced that air-conditioners would be available as optional equipment on at least three 1953 cars. The most famous NYC supper clubs included the Copacabana, The Stork Club, the 21 Club, The Rainbow Room.

What kind of clothes did women wear in 1951? Tailored tweed dresses, fur trimmings, short décolleté dresses with cover-up jacket, ankle-length dinner dresses, brooches, and small daytime hats adorned with jewels.

The DeSoto, Hudson, Nash, and Packard were popular cars of the era. Throughout the decade, famous entertainers headlined at ritzy supper clubs, including Dean Martin, Jerry Lewis, and Jackie Gleason. Humphrey Bogart, Lauren Bacall, or Cary Grant could be spotted at the tables on any given night. Songsters like Frank Sinatra, Judy Garland, and Peggy Lee were top name performers. Winner for the Best Motion Picture of 1951 was All About Eve starring Bette Davis. In 1947, Christian Dior’s “New Look” debuted. The silhouette was characterized by a small, nipped-in waist, and a full skirt falling below mid-calf length, which emphasized the bust and hips. Texaco Star Theatre and I Love Lucy were the most popular TV shows of the early 1950’s. A night out at the supper club meant knocking back a few Manhattans, Sidecars, Martinis, Old Fashioneds, Rusty Nails, or G&T’s.

  • Direct dial coast-to-coast telephone service began in 1952. Baseball was the dominant sport of the late 1940’s and 1950’s. Athletes like Mickey Mantle, Hank Aaron, and Ted Williams were household names. Leading box-office stars of 1949 were Bob Hope, Bing Crosby, Bud Abbott and Lou Costello, John Wayne, Gary Cooper, Cary Grant, Betty Grable, Esther Williams, Humphrey Bogart, and Clark Gable.

In the postwar America of the 1950s, many changes for consumers were afoot. New on the scene in this decade: credit cards, power steering, diet soft drinks, music synthesizers, and transistor radios.

The bundt cake was popularized in 1950 by the Minneapolis Hadassah Society, a group for Jewish women, who wanted to recreate traditional kugelhopf—a dense, ring-shaped cake. Entertainers at supper clubs such as Jack Benny, Milton Berle and Sammy Davis, Jr. put on three shows nightly, along with a cavalcade of chorus girls. In 1953, United States President Harry S. Truman announced the United States had developed a hydrogen bomb. In the late 1940’s, wartime austerity and fabric rationing set the precedent for practicality above flashiness in men’s fashion. However, men began expressing themselves in the details with colors, prints, and accessories in the early 1950’s. During the Golden Age of Radio, new forms of entertainment were created for the new medium: radio plays, mystery, adventure and detective serials, soap operas, quiz shows, variety hours, talent shows, situation comedies, children's shows, as well as live musical concerts and play-by-play sports broadcasts. In 1949, Arthur Miller’s tragedy, Death of a Salesman, ran for 742 performances in NYC. In the early part of the 1950’s, conservatism and conformity ruled for men’s dressing with trim tailoring and similar accessories such as, a hat, pocket square, cigarette, and martini. Elizabeth II was crowned queen of the United Kingdom in 1953.

  • Dear Friends of Delbarton School, Welcome to The Cosmopolitan Club! For the 2020 edition of their signature annual event, the women of the Delbarton Mothers’ Guild have created an experience like no other. Tonight, we return to an era of glamour and elegance, a time when supper club culture dominated postwar New York City's nightlife, and where names like "21" and "The Copacabana" hinted at late evenings in fine clothes, sparkling conversation, and music that would shape a generation. The 2020 Fashion Show, like all fundraising events sponsored by the Mothers' Guild, is presented to raise funds to be used in the current school year for financial aid. Delbarton's mission statement proudly welcomes "diverse young men" of all backgrounds to share in and contribute to the Delbarton Experience. This year, 127 students can attend Delbarton because of the $3.5 million in financial assistance made possible, in part, by the support of the DMG and of friends like you. Those 127 students receiving financial aid clearly benefit from the opportunity to attend Delbarton. In return, they bring their academic prowess to our classrooms, their musical and artistic talents to our stage and studios, their athletic skills to our fields and gyms, and their fierce spirit of brotherhood and fraternity that makes our Benedictine Catholic community spirit a reality for all students. Without those 127 aided students, the Delbarton Experience as we know it in all of its richness and excellence would not be possible. When we empower students to come to Delbarton School through financial aid, we ensure that Delbarton can be its very best self for all of our young men. Thank you for your participation in the 2020 Fashion Show through your attendance, your donations, and your volunteer work. The Fashion Show Committee has prepared a special night on the town for you, so come on in through the velvet rope and enjoy! Gratefully,

    Fr. Michael Tidd, O.S.B. Headmaster
