The Sheriff was brought to the united States because laws needed to be enforced

NDCC 11-15-03 Duties of the Sheriff

1. Preserve the peace

2. Arrest and take before the nearest magistrate …all persons who attempt to commit or have committed a public offense

3. Prevent and suppress all affrays, breaches of peace, riots …come to Sheriff’s knowledge.

4. Attend each term of the District Court…obey lawful orders…any other matters under its direction.

5. Command aid …to execute…duties.

6. Take charge and keep the county jail…prisoners.

7. Endorse upon all notices and process ….

8. Serve all process …prescribed by law.
