The 1917 letter that made public the British support of a Jewish homeland in Palestine led the League of 

Nations to entrust the United Kingdom with th

November 2, 1917

The Balfour Declaration, a letter from British Foreign Secretary Arthur James Balfour to Lord Rothschild

in which the British made public their support of a Jewish homeland in Palestine, was a product of years

of careful negotiation.

After centuries of living in a diaspora, the 1894 Dreyfus Affair in France shocked Jews into realizing they

would not be safe from arbitrary antisemitism unless they had their own country. In response, Jews

created the new concept of political Zionism in which it was believed that through active political

maneuvering, a Jewish homeland could be created. Zionism was becoming a popular concept by the

time World War I began.

During World War I, Great Britain needed help. Since Germany (Britain's enemy during WWI) had

cornered the production of acetone -- an important ingredient for arms production -- Great Britain may

have lost the war if Chaim Weizmann had not invented a fermentation process that allowed the British

to manufacture their own liquid acetone.

It was this fermentation process that brought Weizmann to the attention of David Lloyd George

(minister of ammunitions) and Arthur James Balfour (previously the British prime minister but at this

time the first lord of the admiralty). Chaim Weizmann was not just a scientist; he was also the leader of 

the Zionist movement.

Weizmann's contact with Lloyd George and Balfour continued, even after Lloyd George became primeminister and Balfour was transferred to the Foreign Office in 1916. Additional Zionist leaders such as

Nahum Sokolow also pressured Great Britain to support a Jewish homeland in Palestine.

Though Balfour, himself, was in favor of a Jewish state, Great Britain particularly favored the declaration

as an act of policy. Britain wanted the United States to join World War I and the British hoped that by

supporting a Jewish homeland in Palestine, world Jewry would be able to sway the U.S. to join the war.

Though the Balfour Declaration went through several drafts, the final version was issued on November

2, 1917, in a letter from Balfour to Lord Rothschild, president of the British Zionist Federation. The main

body of the letter quoted the decision of the October 31, 1917 British Cabinet meeting.

This declaration was accepted by the League of Nations on July 24, 1922 and embodied in the mandate

that gave Great Britain temporary administrative control of Palestine.

In 1939, Great Britain reneged on the Balfour Declaration by issuing the White Paper, which stated that

creating a Jewish state was no longer a British policy. It was also Great Britain's change in policy toward

Palestine, especially the White Paper, that prevented millions of European Jews to escape from Nazi-

occupied Europe to Palestine.

I have much pleasure in conveying to you, on behalf of His Majesty's Government, the following

declaration of sympathy with Jewish Zionist aspirations which has been submitted to, and approved by,

the Cabinet.

"His Majesty's Government view with favour the establishment in Palestine of a national home for the

Jewish people, and will use their best endeavours to facilitate the achievement of this object, it being

clearly understood that nothing shall be done which may prejudice the civil and religious rights of 

existing non-Jewish communities in Palestine, or the rights and political status enjoyed by Jews in any

other country."

Intro Prison Camps:I think the term 6 million quote is critical, and in fact key for a huge reason. WWII

wasn't the first time that Jews claimed exactly 6,000,000 of their number were eradicated in genocide.

In 1919 Jews made the exact, same claim but they would like us to forget about that.

For the permission to return to the Promised Land, God allegedly demanded from Jews a "6-Million-

Holocaust-Offering". Burnt offering to be exact.

This self-imposed prophecy without fulfillment, the return to the Promised Land would not be permitted

led to the 1919 "6 million prophecy crash".

Based on the Balfour-Declaration of 1917 the state of Israel was guaranteed, and the Diaspora-Jews

would return to the "Promised Land". In 1920, the leading Jews at that time expected a migration of 

their brethren into "their Land".

But, before the return could take place, "6 million" of them had to disappear.

Jewish organizations proclaimed already in 1919 a "6 million-holocaust", taking place in the Ukraine: "Six

million men and women are dying; eight-hundred-thousand children cry for bread. And this fate is upon

them through no fault of their own, through no transgression of the law of God or man; but through the

awful tyranny of war and a bigoted lust for Jewish blood. In this threatened holocaust of human life ..."

Since the global political situation was such, that the founding of the state of Israel was not possible, the

whole "6 million" idea of 1919 was simply put on ice.

However, the fulfillment of this prophecy is now taking place in the courtrooms of Europe, where verdict

after verdict against critical historians, serve as "judicial notice" proof that the holocaust-version of "6

million" Jewish victims murdered in the "burning ovens" of the Nazis "took place", meaning, that the

prophecy is fulfilled and the "Chosen People" can now return to Israel with the permission of the Cabala.

Term Holocaust -holocaust (hl'-kôst', h'l-) n.

Great destruction resulting in the extensive loss of life, especially by fire. A sacrificial offering that is

consumed entirely by flames.

This is the orginal meaning of the term. Of WW2 events, I could only see the dropping of the Atomic

Bomb or Dresden's fire bombing to qualify as an examples.

Yet after 1987, this definition was added.

Holocaust: The genocide of European Jews and others by the Nazis during World War II.

Genocide, Final Solution and Death Camps - There was no documents found suggesting a genocide of 

the Jewish people. Certainly there was dislike after the International boycott Jews passed on Germanyintended to starve Germans, and teach them a lesson for removed the corrupt Jews who had help

power.

But after Germans had removed Jews from power in Germany, they began making plans to export them

from Germany, and ultimately from Europe. Attempts were made for Britian, and Palestine, but

Germany was met with much resistance. So, the final solution came into play, sending all millions of 

Jews to Madagascar.

This effort doesn't reflect actions of a group looking to genocide. But rather purge a land.

There was much death in camps, but Typhus claimed more victims then Nazis. All claims of 'gassing'

have been ruled impossible and fake, in conjunction with fixed chambers. There is no question

thousands and thousands of Jews were murdered, including disease and starvation numbers would be

well over a million.

But camps were forced labor. The old, and weak were very likely killed, and mobile gassings were

sometimes used. But why would you make a very well built camp, clean, dress, and feed prisoners, only

to kill them?

If you seriously wanted to kill all prisoners, wouldn't you just stop feeding them?

- Famed "Nazi hunter" Simon Wiesenthal acknowledged in 1975 that "there were no extermination

camps on German soil." (´Books & Bookmen´, London, April 1975, p.5).

- Winston Churchill wrote the six volumes of his monumental work, The Second World War, without

mentioning a program of mass-murder and genocide.

- Dwight D. Eisenhower, in his memoir Crusade in Europe, also failed to mention gas chambers. Was the

weapon used to murder millions of Jews unworthy of a passing reference?

- Though millions of Jews supposedly died in the gas chambers, not one body has ever been autopsiedand found to have died of gas poisoning.

- Although the German government kept extensive and detailed records of its wartime Jewish policy, not

a single document has ever been found which substantiates or even refers to an extermination program

or policy.

- The voluminous German records confiscated by the Allies at the end of the war clearly show that the

German "final solution" program was one of emigration and deportation, not extermination.

- The well-known horrific photographs of piles of corpses taken in camps in western Germany at the end

of the war are now acknowledged to be photos of victims of disease and malnutrition who perished as

indirect victims of the war in the final weeks and months of the conflict.

- Confessions, such as those of Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss have been shown to be forced and

extracted by torture. Many of the official reports and testimonies presented as "evidence" by the

prosecution in the Nuremberg trials have since been shown to be lies false.

- In May 1990 Yehuda Bauer, director of Holocaust studies at Hebrew University in Tel Aviv, admitted

that: "The Nazis never made soap from Jews . . ." (quoted in The Jerusalem Post, International Edition, 5

May 1990, p. 6). This is only one recent example where an "irrefutable Holocaust truth" has been

exposed as a monstrous lie.

The Numbers

A figure, consequently, of around 3 million Jews in German- occupied Europe is as accurate as the

available emigration statistics will allow.

Approximately the same number, however, can be deduced in another way if we examine statistics for

the Jewish populations remaining in countries occupied by the Reich.

More than half of those Jews who migrated to the Soviet Union after 1939 came from Poland. It is

frequently claimed that the war with Poland added some 3 million Jews to the German sphere of 

influence and that almost the whole of this Polish Jewish population was "exterminated".

This is a major factual error. The 1931 Jewish population census for Poland put the number of Jews at

2,732,600 (Reitlinger, Die Endlösung, p. 36).

Reitlinger states that at least 1,170,000 of these were in the Russian zone occupied in the autumn of 

1939, about a million of whom were evacuated to the Urals and south Siberia after the German invasion

of June 1941 (ibid. p. 50).

As described above, an estimated 500,000 Jews had emigrated from Poland prior to the war. Moreover,

the journalist Raymond Arthur Davis, who spent the war in the Soviet Union, observed that

approximately 250,000 had already fled from German-occupied Poland to Russia between 1939 and

1941 and were to be encountered in every Soviet province (Odyssey through Hell, N.Y., 1946).

Subtracting these figures from the population of 2,732,600, therefore, and allowing for the normal

population increase, no more than 1,100,000 Polish Jews could have been under German rule at the end

of 1939. (Gutachen des Instituts für Zeitgeschichte, Munich, 1956, p.80). To this number we may add the

360,000 Jews remaining in Germany, Austria and former Czechoslovakia (Bohemia-Moravia and

Slovakia) after the extensive emigration from those countries prior to the war described above. Of the

320,000 French Jews, the Public Prosecutor representing that part of the indictment relating to France

at the Nuremberg Trials, stated that 120,000 Jews were deported, though. Reitlinger estimates only

about 50,000. Thus the total number of Jews under Nazi rule remains below two million. Deportations

from the Scandinavian countries were few, and from Bulgaria none at all. When the Jewish populations

of Holland (140,000), Belgium (40,000), Italy (50,000), Yugoslavia (55,000), Hungary (380,000) and

Roumania (725,000) are included, the figure does not much exceed 3 million.

This excess is due to the fact that the latter figures are pre-war estimates unaffected by emigration,

which from these countries accounted for about 120,000 (see above). This cross-checking, therefore,

confirms the estimate of approximately 3 million European Jews under German occupation

Aaron Breitbart, a senior researcher at the Simon Wiesenthal Center, said "The leading scholars of the

Holocaust are of the opinion that the Nazis did not make soap. It was a cruel rumor at the camps..."

Scientists would later go and test the soap for human DNA, and none was found

The lampshade lie: Like the soap lie, this is also a lie. Diane Saltzman, director of the collections division

of the Holocaust Memorial Museum in Washington, D.C. says None of the lampshades that have

surfaced over the past 50 years have ever turned out to be real. There is no proof that this practice has

ever occurred.

In the museum of the Dachau-Memorial, the editor could see clearly on a life-size enlargement that they

forgot to draw in the ropes in this picture by which the two "hanged prisoners" were supposed to hang.

As such, they are floating in the air without ropes.

An enlargement of the first image. The left arm of the man stepping over the supposed bodies is far too

long and seems to have two elbows. What is more, the bodies lying on the ground are not only in very

poor focus but also anatomically impossible.

It's clear the guard is NOT aiming at the woman so the Jews cropped it to make it seem like that.

- This is a factual list of facilities available to prisoners at the alleged Nazi death camp of Auschwitz in

Poland.

Most of these facilities can still be seen in the camp today, including the cinema, swimming pool,

hospital, library and post office.

- Supposedly the most dreaded of German camps, Auschwitz was repeatedly visited by Red Cross

inspection teams who were allowed to speak to prisoner representatives alone, in order to hear first-

hand of any mistreatment, chicanery, interruption of mail and parcel delivery, health concerns, food and

ration matters etc.

- Up to 16 camp orchestras with every conceivable instrument available

- A camp library where inmates could borrow books from Forty -five thousand volumes available

- Auschwitz marriages took place because worker inmates fell in love and married their inmate partners.

- Auschwitz maternity ward - Over 3,000 live births were registered there, with not a single infant death

while Auschwitz was in operation under German rule

He had a vision for a united nation. One built on pride, honor and loyalty. Words and standards which

today have been replaced

with guilt, greed, and power.

Hitler was a true Gentleman, women adored him, children loved him. His character was very decent

Man, he would not curse or allow any bad behavior. He also took a demilitarized, zero pride, economic

downfall nation into a world superpower in 15 years after WWI.

Other matters to note.

Between 1933 and 1939, the marriage rate had increased by 9.2%

Hitler turned around an economy

Hitler set up a health insurance scheme for all Germans that only cost 10 cents per person per day that

would fund the whole health sector. People paid for what they used, hence no one could complain

about

unfair taxes.

Nazi Germany was one of the only countries not to deny women the right to vote during war time

Hitler enacted the first laws to protect animals from cruelty which afforded them protection in line with

what humans received, this law existed till

the late 1970's till it was renamed in an effort

to de-Nazify Germany

Nazi Germany provided unlimited money towards an alternative fuel source other than oil by investing

in synthetic petrol and electric

power generation

Hitler also invested in anti-gravity theories.

Hitler invested heavily into rocket technology, the A-10 rocket was used as the basis for the launch of 

the Sputnic satellite after WW2

Outlawed medical experimentation on animals.

He undertook a war against the Communist horde that no major power in the world would do, or has

done yet by the way.

He put the power of the state in the hands of an all German state instead of the Jews.

His Nazi party was one of the first to start a war on cancer.

Under his leadership the first blood tests were given to drivers that were under the influence of Alcohol.

The party, under Hitler's command, encouraged family morals, motherhood, fatherhood, respect and

honor.

Hitler was actually a believer in women's rights and wanted to help abused and disenfranchised women.

Hence the motherhood programs came into place.

He was an environmentalist seeking to protect nature clean air, water.

Brave and decorated soldier of WW1

He envisioned the Autobahn and Volkswagen.

Gave the German workers the first May Day.

Under "Strength Through Joy" gave paid vacation trips to workers.

JEWISH INFLUENCE AND THE REICH

The National Socialist Party of Adolf Hitler gained 17,300,000 votes in the election and gained 288 seats

in the Reichstag. On 30 January 1933 Hitler was legally appointed Chancellor.

On that same day, 24 March 1933, on the front page of the London Daily Express appeared the main

headlines: "Judaea declares war on Germany: Jews of all the world unite", and followed with:

'The Israelite people of the entire world declare economic and financial war on Germany. The

appearance of the Swastika as the symbol of the new Germany revives the old war symbol of the Jews.

Fourteen million Jews stand as one body to declare war on Germany. The Jewish wholesale dealer

leaves his business, the banker his bank, the shopkeeper his shop, the beggar his miserable hut in order

to combine forces in the holy war against Hitler's people.'

The German government was removing Jews from influential positions and transferring power back to

the German people. This declaration of war by the Jews on Germany was repeated throughout the

world. The first boycott of Jewish business concerns came after this Jewish declaration of war in April

1933.

JUDEA DECLARES WAR : This examines the reasons why National Socialism came to power, the role of 

the world's jews declaring war on Germany, with a healthy helping of solid revisionist research on some

of the lies surrounding the "holocaust" fraud.

ATROCITIES AGAINST GERMANY

When the average person is faced with the question

"What do you think when hearing the term Nazi"?

Many will be quick to say - Well, they stood for evil, were led by Hitler, and killed 6 million jews.

The truth is, you have one out of three right. Hitler did lead the National Socialist. However, there was

no bad or evil with the intentions of the party or its leaders. The goal was pride, honor, and loyalty.

Germany wished only to removed a threat who had declared war on them first.

They also wanted to retake borders robbed from them

after WWI.

There is no disputing that Jewish people suffered a great atrocity and there was a serious number of 

victims. But I feel not that the actual number count is not quite as what history books or films describe. I

feel mention should be made of the millions of others that also died during this time. The following

events list some of these.

Katyn Massacre - In 1943 the Wehrmacht discovered the mass grave of over 4000 Polish officers in the

forest near Katyn and accused the Soviets of having massacred them. It resulted in the murder of 25,700

Polish citizens, including 14,700 prisoners of war being slaughtered. In 1989 Soviet scholars revealed

that Joseph Stalin had indeed ordered the massacre.

NAZI GERMANY

Nazi Germany or the Third Reich commonly refers to Germany in the years between 1933 and 1945,

when it was under the firm control of Adolf Hitler's dictatorship and the ideology of National Socialism

(a variant of fascism and totalitarianism).

The term Nazi is a short form of the German

Nationalsozialismus; the ideology was institutionalized in the NSDAP (Nationalsozialistische Deutsche

Arbeiterpartei), the National Socialist German Workers' Party, or Nazi Party for short.

National Socialism stood for much good like the public works program; encouragement of the arts,

Why did Hitler Invade Poland

WW 2 was started over the Danzig corridor which was part of Germany until the Versailles treaty gave it

to Poland

Causing a depression enabling Jews to buy up vast amounts of German industry and left Germans bitter.

The Polish Bolsheviks kill 58,000 German Nationals in the Danzig corridor.

In the months leading up to the German invasion the Polish Army and independent Bolshevik units had

been slaughtering German nationals in the Danzig corridor. Mass killings of thousands of civilian ethnic

Germans (Volksdeutsche) by both civilian and Russian NDVK Jews, who were confident that Poland

would quickly defeat Germany.

Rudolph Hess, the Deputy Leader of Nazi Germany, was in contact with the Cliveden group and flew to

England May 10, 1941 to negotiate peace.

Hitler believed the future of Western civilization depended on the cooperation of Germany and her

Aryan cousins: England and the United States. His territorial demands were limited to CommunistRussia, which he regarded as a proxy for Jewish world ambitions. He was determined to avoid fighting a

war on two fronts.

In May 1940, the British were on the verge of defeat. The English army was trapped at Dunkirk. Rather

Conclusion: Though it's impossible to deny the holocaust outright, as facts are just too abundant. It

seems clear that the event isn't without discrepancy as to the actual numbers in light of all the evidence

over the last sixty years.

NUREMBERG TRIALS:

Now knowing that main focus of the Nazi crimes against peace - the holocaust was fabricated, it's

disturbing to think how many innocent and decent men were put to death just for fighting for their

country.

Rudolph Hess was sentenced to life, and never granted parole. In the end, he was sadly murdered -

Crime Scene.

A key Holocaust document is the "confession" of former Auschwitz commandant Rudolf Höss of April 5,

1946, which was submitted at the main Nuremberg trial.

Many years after the war, British military intelligence sergeant Bernard Clarke described how he and five

other British soldiers tortured the former commandant to obtain his "confession." Höss himself privately

explained his ordeal in these words: "Certainly, I signed a statement that I killed two and half million

Jews. I could just as well have said that it was five million Jews. There are certain methods by which any

confession can be obtained, whether it is true or not."

CRIMES AGAINST FATHERLAND:

Katyn Massacre - In 1943 the Wehrmacht discovered the mass grave of over 4000 Polish officers in the

forest near Katyn and accused the Soviets of having massacred them. It resulted in the murder of 25,700

Polish citizens, including 14,700 prisoners of war being slaughtered. In 1989 Soviet scholars revealed

that Joseph Stalin had indeed ordered the massacre.

Nuremberg Trials- In 1946, the chief Soviet prosecutor at the Nuremberg Trials tried to indict Germany

for the Katyn killings.

People always connect Nazi Germany with hate and racism. Suggesting all non-whites were inferior to

It was the norm in Europe that a factory owner had the power of instant dismissal over an employee.

There was no recourse anywhere for unfair treatment from an employer. On the other hand factory

owners had no protection against crippling strikes and demands for unrealistic wage increases.

Adolf created legal rights which were fair to both factory owner and worker. Three regulatory bodies

were legally established to provide this protection.

Every enterprise with 20 or more people had to have a "Council of Trust". This council had the duty to

promote goodwill and teamwork in the enterprise. It was expected to settle disputes. Both workers and

management had a say over the composition of this council. Unresolved disputes could be referred to

Labour Commissions.

"Labour Commissions" were regional bodies that supervised the Councils of Trust. They were essentially

arbitrators and conciliators appointed by the state, with no interest in favoring workers or management.

Because of the technical nature of the manufacturing industry the Labour Commissions were assisted by

a "Consulting Council of Experts", drawn from all major technical fields of expertise.

A "Tribunal of Social Honor" was established to resolve disputes that the Labour Commission could not

resolve. Each tribunal had a presiding career Judge, seconded by two assistant judges; one representing

the workers, and one representing management. The system was revolutionary and stunningly

successful. The world had never seen anything like it. This system with its checks and balances was the

most enlightened in human history, and the world has seen no better since.

The rampant strikes, lockouts and absenteeism became things of the past after relations between

workers and management improved. Because class conflict is a cornerstone of Marxist strategy, the

looming Communist takeover in Germany disintegrated and disappeared.

Adolf also introduced the standard forty-hour work week in Europe. Overtime work was now

compensated at an increased rate, which was done nowhere else on the continent at the time. And

because the eight-hour work day was now the norm, overtime work became more readily available.

Whilst many of these rights are taken for granted today, it should be remembered that at the time, such

social protection was unheard of outside of Germany

Adolf often toured factories, to see for himself, and hear for himself from workers and management

whether the new legislation ws improving their lot. He walked about the factories without bodyguards

among hundreds of men armed with spanners and cranes. In his twelve years service and many factories

he visited, there was never an untoward incident. The workers idolized him.

In another innovation by Adolf, work breaks were increased to two hours each day, allowing greater

opportunity for workers to relax and make use of playing fields and other facilities that large industries

were now required to provide.

All German workers now also received a pension and insurance in the event of sickness or disability.

Hygiene and Relaxation AT THE WORKPLACE

In the early 1930's, factories worldwide were utilitarian and unfriendly to the human body and spirit.

Dark smelly functional pits for the sweat of labor. But in 1933 legislation caused German factories to

conform to a high standard of cleanliness ahd hygiene. Interior areas had to be open to light.

Larger factories had to provide rest areas, cafeterias, proper dressing rooms and even playing fields or

swimming pools.

It was a principle that working conditions not impair the physical and spiritual wellbeing of the workers.

Concerts and other entertainment groups toured the country, adding variety and culture to the

workplace.

Within three years 17,000 cafeterias had been added onto factories. In addition 13,000 sanitation

facilities with running water were provided to workers that previously had to make do with primitive

latrines and washbasins.

Concerts became a regular feature in large factories.

Crime Rate

Lawlessness, prostitution, smuggling and other antisocial maladies were widespread before Adolf took

over as Chancellor. By tackling the problem in various ways crime was virtually eliminated and city

streets became safe and moral regions, fit for family life again.

"Thousands of Americans, Englishmen and Frenchmen have visited Germany during the months after

the national revolution and were able to testify as eye-witnesses that there is no country in, the world

where law and order are better maintained than in present-day Germany. That there is no country in

the world where person and property are held in better respect than in our own, but that there is

perhaps also no country in the word where a more rigorous fight is put up against those who believe

that they are free to let loose their lower instincts to the detriment of their fellow-beings"

MOTHER AND CHILD CARE

The "Mother and Child" organization was formed to provide for the welfare, health, safety, financial

security, and recreation of mothers, their children and even expectant mothers. The 26,000 local centres

created by 1937 provided 1,800,000 children with holidays. In addition, 4319 new nurseries and

kindergartens were created.

assumed power. Thousands and thousands of children have been sent to special holiday and sunshine

homes in the country and at the seaside. Their numbers would suffice to flank both sides of the Berlin-

In 1937, new laws were passed outlawing the sale of alcohol to minors. Germany instituted punishment

for driving under the influence of alcohol and reinforced this through the application of blood tests to

car drivers.

The German government promoted the drinking of mineral water as a substitute for alcohol, and

conducted extensive campaigns amongst the youth to encourage them to eat and drink healthy, and get

plenty of exercise; a healthy mind in a healthy body.

After 1945 Hitler was accused of every cruelty, but it was not in his nature to be cruel. He loved children.

It was an entirely natural thing for him to stop his car and share his food with young cyclists along the

road. Once he gave his raincoat to a derelict plodding in the rain. At midnight he would interrupt his

work and prepare the food for his dog Blondi.

"I did not hear from him for years, when at last in 1921 I saw him again in Vienna. In the meantime I had

A US Prison Guard's Story

In October, 1944, at age eighteen, I was drafted into the U.S. army. Largely because of the "Battle of the Bulge," my training was cut short. My furlough

was halved, and I was sent overseas immediately. Upon arrival in Le Havre,

France, we were quickly loaded into box cars and shipped to the front. When

we got there, I was suffering increasingly severe symptoms of mononucleosis, and was sent to a hospital in Belgium. Since mononucleosis

was then known as the "kissing disease," I mailed a letter of thanks to my

girlfriend. 

By the time I left the hospital, the outfit I had trained with in Spartanburg,South Carolina was deep inside Germany, so, despite my protests, I was

 placed in a ãrepo depotä(replacement depot). I lost interest in the units to

which I was assigned and don't recall all of them: non-combat units wereridiculed at that time. My separation qualification record states I was mostly

with Company C, 14th Infantry Regiment, during my seventeen-month stay

in Germany, but I remember being transferred to other outfits also. 

In late March or early April, 1945, I was sent to guard a POW camp near 

Andernach along the Rhine. I had four years of high school German, so Iwas able to talk to the prisoners, although this was forbidden. Gradually,

however, I was used as an interpreter and asked to ferret out members of the

S.S. (I found none.) 

In Andernach about 50,000 prisoners of all ages were held in an open field

surrounded by barbed wire. The women were kept in a separate enclosure Idid not see until later. The men I guarded had no shelter and no blankets;

many had no coats. They slept in the mud, wet and cold, with inadequate slit

trenches for excrement. It was a cold, wet spring and their misery from

exposure alone was evident. 

Even more shocking was to see the prisoners throwing grass and weeds into

a tin can containing a thin soup. They told me they did this to help ease their 

hunger pains. Quickly, they grew emaciated. Dysentery raged, and soon they

were sleeping in their own excrement, too weak and crowded to reach theslit trenches. Many were begging for food, sickening and dying before our

eyes. We had ample food and supplies, but did nothing to help them,

including no medical assistance. 

Outraged, I protested to my officers and was met with hostility or bland

indifference. When pressed, they explained they were under strict orders

from "higher up." No officer would dare do this to 50,000 men if he felt thatit was "out of line," leaving him open to charges. Realizing my protests were

useless, I asked a friend working in the kitchen if he could slip me someextra food for the prisoners. He too said they were under strict orders to

severely ration the prisoners' food and that these orders came from "higher 

up." But he said they had more food than they knew what to do with andwould sneak me some. 

When I threw this food over the barbed wire to the prisoners, I was caught

and threatened with imprisonment. I repeated the "offense," and one officer 

angrily threatened to shoot me. I assumed this was a bluff until Iencountered a captain on a hill above the Rhine shooting down at a group of 

German civilian women with his .45 caliber pistol. When I asked, Why?," he

mumbled, "Target practice," and fired until his pistol was empty. I saw the

women running for cover, but, at that distance, couldn't tell if any had beenhit. 

This is when I realized I was dealing with cold-blooded killers filled with

moralistic hatred. They considered the Germans subhuman and worthy of 

extermination; another expression of the downward spiral of racism. Articles

in the G.I. newspaper, Stars and Stripes, played up the Germanconcentration camps, complete with photos of emaciated bodies; this

amplified our self-righteous cruelty and made it easier to imitate behavior 

we were supposed to oppose. Also, I think, soldiers not exposed to combatwere trying to prove how tough they were by taking it out on the prisoners

and civilians. 

These prisoners, I found out, were mostly farmers and workingmen, as

simple and ignorant as many of our own troops. As time went on, more of 

them lapsed into a zombie-like state of listlessness, while others tried to

escape in a demented or suicidal fashion, running through open fields in

 broad daylight towards the Rhine to quench their thirst. They were moweddown.Some prisoners were as eager for cigarettes as for food, saying they

took the edge off their hunger. Accordingly, enterprising G.I. "Yankee

traders" were acquiring hordes of watches and rings in exchange for 

handfuls of cigarettes or less. When I began throwing cartons of cigarettes tothe prisoners to ruin this trade, I was threatened by rank-and-file G.I.s too.

The only bright spot in this gloomy picture came one night when.I was put

on the "graveyard shift," from two to four A.M. Actually, there was a

graveyard on the uphill side of this enclosure, not many yards away. My

superiors had forgotten to give me a flashlight and I hadn't bothered to ask 

for one, disgusted as I was with the whole situation by that time. It was afairly bright night and I soon became aware of a prisoner crawling under the

wires towards the graveyard. We were supposed to shoot escapees on sight,so I started to get up from the ground to warn him to get back. Suddenly I

noticed another prisoner crawling from the graveyard back to the enclosure.

They were risking their lives to get to the graveyard for something; I had toinvestigate. 

When I entered the gloom of this shrubby, tree-shaded cemetery, I felt

completely vulnerable, but somehow curiosity kept me moving. Despite my

caution, I tripped over the legs of someone in a prone position. Whippingmy rifle around while stumbling and trying to regain composure of mind and

 body, I soon was relieved I hadn't reflexively fired. The figure sat up.

Gradually, I could see the beautiful but terror-stricken face of a woman with

a picnic basket nearby. German civilians were not allowed to feed, nor evencome near the prisoners, so I quickly assured her I approved of what she was

doing, not to be afraid, and that I would leave the graveyard to get out of the

way. 

I did so immediately and sat down, leaning against a tree at the edge of the

cemetery to be inconspicuous and not frighten the prisoners. I imaginedthen, and still do now, what it would be like to meet a beautiful woman with

a picnic basket, under those conditions as a prisoner. I have never forgotten

her face. 

Eventually, more prisoners crawled back to the enclosure. I saw they were

dragging food to their comrades and could only admire their courage and

devotion. 

On May 8, V.E. Day, I decided to celebrate with some prisoners I was

guarding who were baking bread the other prisoners occasionally received.This group had all the bread they could eat, and shared the jovial moodgenerated by the end of the war. We all thought we were going home soon, a

 pathetic hope on their part. We were in what was to become the French

zone, where I soon would witness the brutality of the French soldiers whenwe transferred our prisoners to them for their slave labor camps. 

On this day, however, we were happy.

As a gesture of friendliness, I emptied my rifle and stood it in the corner,

even allowing them to play with it at their request! This thoroughly "broke

the ice," and soon we were singing songs we taught each other or I had

learned in high school German ("Du, du liegst mir im Herzen"). Out of 

gratitude, they baked me a special small loaf of sweet bread, the only possible present they had left to offer. I stuffed it in my "Eisenhower jacket"

and snuck it back to my barracks, eating it when I had privacy. I have never tasted more delicious bread, nor felt a deeper sense of communion while

eating it. I believe a cosmic sense of Christ (the Oneness of all Being)

revealed its normally hidden presence to me on that occasion, influencingmy later decision to major in philosophy and religion. 

Shortly afterwards, some of our weak and sickly prisoners were marched off 

 by French soldiers to their camp. We were riding on a truck behind this

column. Temporarily, it slowed down and dropped back, perhaps becausethe driver was as shocked as I was. Whenever a German prisoner staggered

or dropped back, he was hit on the head with a club until he died. The bodies

were rolled to the side of the road to be picked up by another truck. For 

many, this quick death might have been preferable to slow starvation in our "killing fields." 

When I finally saw the German women in a separate enclosure, I asked why

we were holding them prisoner. I was told they were "camp followers,"

selected as breeding stock for the S.S. to create a super-race. I spoke to some

and must say I never met a more spirited or attractive group of women. Icertainly didn't think they deserved imprisonment. 

I was used increasingly as an interpreter, and was able to prevent some

 particularly unfortunate arrests. One rather amusing incident involved an old

farmer who was being dragged away by several M.Pâs. I was told he had a

"fancy Nazi medal," which they showed me. Fortunately, I had a chart

identifying such medals. He'd been awarded it for having five children!

Perhaps his wife was somewhat relieved to get him "off her back," but I

didn't think one of our death camps was a fair punishment for his

contribution to Germany. The M.P.s agreed and released him to continue his

"dirty work." 

Famine began to spread among the German civilians also. It was a common

sight to see German women up to their elbows in our garbage cans lookingfor something edible -- that is, if they weren't chased away.

When I interviewed mayors of small towns and villages, I was told their 

supply of food had been taken away by "displaced persons" (foreigners whohad worked in Germany), who packed the food on trucks and drove away.

When I reported this, the response was a shrug. I never saw any Red Cross

at the camp or helping civilians, although their coffee and doughnut stands

were available everywhere else for us. In the meantime, the Germans had torely on the sharing of hidden stores until the next harvest. 

Hunger made German women more "available," but despite this, rape was

 prevalent and often accompanied by additional violence. In particular I

remember an eighteen-year old woman who had the side of her facedsmashed with a rifle butt and was then raped by two G.I.s. Even the French

complained that the rapes, looting and drunken destructiveness on the part of 

our troops was excessive. In Le Havre, we'd been given booklets warning usthat the German soldiers had maintained a high standard of behavior with

French civilians who were peaceful, and that we should do the same. In this

we failed miserably. 

"So what?" some would say. "The enemy's atrocities were worse than ours."

It is true that I experienced only the end of the war, when we were alreadythe victors. The German opportunity for atrocities had faded; ours was at

hand. But two wrongs don't make a right. Rather than copying our enemyâs

crimes, we should aim once and for all to break the cycle of hatred andvengeance that has plagued and distorted human history. This is why I am

speaking out now, forty-five years after the crime. We can never prevent

individual war crimes, but we can, if enough of us speak out, influencegovernment policy. We can reject government propaganda that depicts our 

enemies as subhuman and encourages the kind of outrages I witnessed. We

can protest the bombing of civilian targets, which still goes on today. Andwe can refuse ever to condone our government's murder of unarmed and

defeated prisoners of war. 

I realize it is difficult for the average citizen to admit witnessing a crime of 

this magnitude, especially if implicated himself. Even G.Iâs sympathetic to

the victims were afraid to complain and get into trouble, they told me. Andthe danger has not ceased. Since I spoke out a few weeks ago, I have

received threatening calls and had my mailbox smashed. But its been worth

it. Writing about these atrocities has been a catharsis of feeling suppressedtoo long, a liberation, and perhaps will remind other witnesses that "the truth

will make us free, have no fear." We may even learn a supreme lesson from

all this: only love can conquer all.
