History of the Toilet

Going inside

2500 BC: Harappan city builds indoor toilets.

Toilets empty into a brick-lined sewer. Technology was lost when cities were

invaded (1500 BC). Advances then took place in Europe.

Royal Flush

1500 BC: Crete install first flush toilet.When flushed, rainwater is released into a

bowl and down clay pipes running through the palace.

An earthquake destroyed the toilet.

Really Public Bathrooms

800 BC: Cloaca Maxima = sewer system in Rome.

Public toilets above the sewer.11,000 seats on stone henches--no privacy.Only one sponge on stick for wiping.
