Byron V. Kanaley Award

The most prestigious honor awarded to a Notre Dame student-athlete, the Byron V.Kanaley Awardhas been presented each year since 1927 to the senior monogram athletes who have been mostexemplary as both students and leaders.The awards, presented by the Faculty Board on Athletics, arenamed in honor of a 1904 Notre Dame graduate who was a member of the Irish baseball team asan undergraduate. Kanaley went on to a successful banking career in Chicago and served theUniversity as a lay trustee from 1915 until his death in 1960.

National &InternationalCompetition

In addition to their many accomplishments in col-legiate action, Notre Dame women’s swimmers anddivers have a history of also competing in variousprestigious national and international meets, includ-ing three of the last four Olympics.

In 1996, Jilen Siroky (’04), then just 15 years ofage, represented the United States in the Atlantagames, finishing 15th in the 200m Breast. Siroky alsowas the 1996 U.S. champion in the 100 Breast.

In 2000, Christel Bouvron represented her nativeSingapore in the Sydney games, finishing 32nd in the200m Fly and 36th in the 400 Free. Four years later,she became just the second current Notre Dame stu-dent-athlete ever – and first in 84 years – to take part

in the Olympics, matching her 32nd-place finish inthe 200 Fly.

In addition to that pair of Olympians, 39 Irish stu-dent-athletes have competed in U.S. Olympic Trialsand four more have swum in their native country’strials. Backstroker Erin Brooks, a 1997 graduate, rep-resented the U.S. in the ’97 World University Gamesand came home with a bronze medal in the 200Back. Notre Dame also has a long history of swim-mers and divers who have qualified or competed inthe USA Swimming Senior National Championships,as nearly 60 future, current, or former Irish competi-tors have done so.

missioned to design the 45,000-square-foot facilitywhich houses a 50-meter Olympic pool (25 yards inwidth), spectator seating for 400 and support facilities.

The facility features two movable bulkheads toallow sections of the pool to be blocked off, allowingswimming competition and warm-up swimming tooccur simultaneously. The design also allows recre-ational swimming, water polo, instructional swim-ming and other aquatic activities. Diving isaccommodated with two one-meter boards and twothree-meter boards.

After fouryears of varsity intercollegiate swimming competitionin the Rockne Memorial Pool, the Notre Damewomen’s swimming and diving program entered anew era in 1985, as they moved to the $4.5-millionnatatorium located in the Joyce Center.

Several deckside instructionalareas are located around the pooland feature infrared heat lamps,designed to keep wet swimmerswarm between events.The pool fea-tures a stainless steel racing gutterwhich is designed to absorb the bowwaves of a swimmer, allowing fasterswimming times.

Another instructional feature isthe presence of two underwaterwindows which allow critiquing ofa diver’s or swimmer’s underwatertechnique. The unique structuralsystem consists of three trusseswhich span 120 feet, with the roofsuspended below the trusses. Inaddition, the white exterior trussesprovide an interesting and athleticcharacter to the building. The light-ing system is designed to be adjusted

from maximum brightness for television to nearlydark for dramatic synchronized swimming presenta-tions.

The center was officially dedicated on November13, 1985.

Equipment necessary for the latest diving training techniques, including a trampoline, is located in the diving area. The Rolfs AquaticCenter diving well contains two one-meter boards and two three-meter boards.

The Rolfs Aquatic Center is home to Notre Dame women’s and men’s swimming and diving teams. The pool has twomoveable bulkheads that allow the Irish the opportunity to train on either a long or short course.


BIG EASTConferenceThe 2008-09 academic year will be the 30th for

The BIG EAST Conference. While the league hasgone through membership changes since its birth, ithas never been stronger. This academic year willmark the conference’s fourth year as the nation’slargest Division I-A conference.

The goals of the BIG EAST have never changed.The league aims and expects to compete at the high-est level and does so with integrity and sportsman-ship. The student-athletes of the member schoolscontinue to maintain the league’s proud tradition ofsuccess.

BIG EAST teams earned their share of recognitionat the highest levels in 2007-08. Four women’s teamsadvanced to their respective NCAA Final Fours:Connecticut field hockey and women’s basketball,Notre Dame soccer and Syracuse lacrosse.

Individually in men’s sports, Villanova’s BobbyCurtis was the NCAA outdoor track champion in the5,000 meters. Connecticut’s O’Brian White won theM.A.C. Hermann Trophy, the highest individual honorin soccer. Two years ago, BIG EAST male and femalestudent-athletes were Hermann Trophy winners.

In men’s basketball, the BIG EAST tied its ownrecord set in 2006 by earning eight NCAAChampionship bids. BIG EAST women’s teams havereceived eight NCAA invitations in each of the pasttwo years. The combined 16 men’s and women’sberths in 2008 was an NCAA first.

The quality of BIG EAST football has never beenmore balanced. Six of the league’s eight squads werenationally ranked in 2007. For the third straight year,the BIG EAST representative in the BowlChampionship Series won its BCS bowl game.

The BIG EAST continued to produce student-ath-letes who were at the forefront of athletic and aca-demic achievement. Nineteen BIG EAST playerswere chosen to their respective ESPN The MagazineAcademic All-America Teams, including eight first-team selections.

The BIG EAST became the nation’s largestDivision I-A group in 2005-06 when five new mem-bers began competing. The new schools were:University of Cincinnati, DePaul University,University of Louisville,Marquette University and theUniversity of South Florida.

BIG EAST institutions reside in nine of the nation’stop 34 largest media markets, including New York,Chicago, Philadelphia, Washington, D.C., Tampa,Pittsburgh, Hartford, Milwaukee and Cincinnati.With its newest members, BIG EAST markets containalmost one fourth of all television households in theU.S.

Since opening its doors in 1979, the league haswon 25 national championships in six different sportsand 125 student-athletes have won individual nationaltitles.

The BIG EAST has always been able to boast thatsome of its best students are also some of its best ath-letes. More than 370 student-athletes have earnedacademic all-America honors. Last year in football,Louisville quarterback Brian Brohm, who finished hiscareer as the BIG EAST’s career passing leader, wasone of the league’s eight first-team ESPN TheMagazine Academic All-America team picks.

Also,Connecticut’s Rebecca Lobo, one of the mostheralded women’s basketball players in the history ofthe sport, was named to the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame in 2008. Lobo, a two-timeBIG EAST Player of the Year, led the Huskies to the1995 NCAA national championship.

The BIG EAST has enjoyed tremendous basketballsuccess, especially in this decade. In 2003-04,Connecticut became the first school in NCAA his-tory to win the men’s and women’s NCAA titles inthe same season. In ’02-03, the BIG EAST becamethe first conference in NCAA history to win themen’s and women’s titles in the same year when theSyracuse men and the Connecticut women capturedtheir respective national championships. In men’s bas-ketball, BIG EAST squads have won three of the last10 NCAA championships. BIG EAST women’steams have taken five of the last nine NCAA titles.

Proactive movement has been a signature strategyfor the conference that was born in 1979. The BIGEAST continually turns challenges into opportunitiesto become stronger.

In the spring of 2001, the BIG EAST addedwomen’s lacrosse and rowing to its growing list ofsports. The first women’s golf championship was heldin the spring of 2003. In 2007, the league conductedits first women’s lacrosse championship tournament.In 2009-10, the BIG EAST will begin sponsorship ofmen’s lacrosse, its 24th sport

The BIG EAST became a reality on May 31, 1979,following a meeting of athletic directors fromProvidence College, St. John’s, Georgetown andSyracuse Universities. Seton Hall, Connecticut andBoston College completed the original seven schoolalliance.

While the membership has both increased andchanged, the focus of the BIG EAST has not wavered.The conference reflects a tradition of broad based

programs, led by administrators and coaches whoplace a constant emphasis on academic integrity. Itsstudent-athletes own significantly high graduationrates and their record of scholastic achievementnotably shows a balance between intercollegiate ath-letics and academics.

Any successful organization needs outstandingleadership. Michael Tranghese, the league’s first full-time employee, and for 11 years the associate to DaveGavitt, became Commissioner in 1990. In his firstyear, he administered the formation of The BIGEAST Football Conference.

For 2009-10, the BIG EAST will undergo one sig-nificant change. Tranghese has announced that hewill step down from his position on June 30, 2009.

The league has long been considered a leader ininnovative concepts in promotion and publicity, par-ticularly regarding television. Those efforts haveresulted in unparalleled visibility for BIG EAST stu-dent athletes. The conference has enjoyed long-standing relationships with CBS, ESPN, Inc. and ABC.

While BIG EAST basketball games are regularsellouts at campus and major public arenas, includingthe annual men’s BIG EAST Championship inMadison Square Garden, attendance figures also aresignificant in soccer, women’s basketball and baseballgames.

More than 550 BIG EAST student-athletes haveearned all America recognition and dozens have wonindividual NCAA national championships. The BIGEAST has been well represented in U.S. or foreignnational and Olympic teams. Several athletes earnedgold medals in each of the last six summerOlympiads.

The BIG EAST has its headquarters in Providencewhere the conference administers to more than 5,500athletes.
