SA HISTORY WEEKiv

I am delighted to introduce the SA History Week program for 2006 and

especially pleased to launch the inaugural program of SA Open Heritage.

I hope it will become a permanent feature of History Week.

Once again I would like to acknowledge the outstanding contribution of the

committed and enthusiastic volunteer history community of South Australia.

This year’s program of events is larger than ever and is a most impressive

demonstration of the on-going commitment of our volunteers who are vital to

preserving our history and heritage and presenting it to the wider public.

As South Australians we value our history and work hard for its preservation.

That history comes in many forms – from our heritage places and precincts,

to the stories that are told in our museums, libraries and archives. Together they

constitute a precious resource for us and for generations to come. They help to

define who we are as South Australians and to project South Australia

to the world.

The South Australian Government is proud to sponsor SA History Week and

SA Open Heritage.

I trust that you will enjoy this opportunity to see South Australia’s history

first-hand.

Once again, the History Trust is proud to bring SA History Week to the South

Australian community.

This is a bumper program, with more community participants than ever before

and a huge range of events to choose from. For the first time we also include

SA Open Heritage, opening the doors to a selection of South Australia’s

heritage treasures. We hope you will enjoy visiting some of these unique historic

places.

I would especially like to thank all of those community partners who have joined

with us to make SA History Week such a success over the past few years. Their

passion for the past is clearly evident in these pages and bodes well for the

future of history in our State.

History and historians have been much in the media in the past few years.

Sometimes these debates have become quite heated. But perhaps this is a

good thing – a sign that we care enough about our past to engage with it. After

all, our past is always present, whether we recognise it or not. Events like SA

History Week allow us to get to know it better and to use that knowledge to

strengthen our community for the future.

SA Open Heritage is an initiative resulting from a collaborative effort between

the Department for Environment and Heritage and the History Trust of

South Australia.

The SA Open Heritage program was inspired by the vision of my colleague,

Hon John Hill MP, the previous Minister for Environment and Conservation.

Minister Hill recognised that opening the doors to heritage enables people to

enjoy and learn from privately-owned heritage places. It also gives the owners

the opportunity to be recognised for the great work they do preserving our

community’s past for future generations.

I thank the many owners who have opened up their homes and special places

in order to share their part of South Australia’s heritage. I am pleased that

my Department has been able to support this pilot scheme in South Australia

during the 2006 SA History Week and wish all involved every success.

IntroducingSA Open Heritage

For the fi rst time, the SA History Week program includes

the new SA Open Heritage.

SA Open Heritage is modelled on the highly successful and long running UK

model of Heritage Open Days. It is a joint venture between the Department for

Environment and Heritage and the History Trust of South Australia.

It was developed through the vision and commitment of former Minister for

Environment and Conservation, the Hon John Hill, MP.

SA Open Heritage in 2006 will offer South Australians the opportunity of a

behind-the-doors glimpse inside some of South Australia’s less well known

but loveliest heritage places.

Fifty two participants in the Cities of Adelaide and Port Adelaide/Enfi eld and

in selected Hills townships are taking part in this inaugural event, showcasing

83 heritage buildings. As some of these heritage places are not generally open

to the public, this is an opportunity not to be missed.

As part of SA Open Heritage, Adelaide City Council and the National Trust of

South Australia have developed a special ‘Open Doors’ program for the

City of Adelaide’s signifi cant heritage places.

President of the Royal Australian Institute of Architects, South Australian

Chapter, Carolyn Wigg said about the SA Open Heritage initiative:

‘This State has an excellent architectural heritage, from early colonial

architecture to the 20th century, with some outstanding interiors.

SA Open Heritage will remind the public that our heritage is priceless and

enriches our lives’.

So step over the threshold of some of South Australia’s historic pubs,

halls, mansions, cottages, clubs and places of worship and into South

Australia’s past.

SA Open Heritage places are indexed separately in this program.

Look for the SA Open Heritage icon.

The historical photographs used in the SA History Week program are from the

South Australian Glass Negatives Collection.

This Collection has a very interesting history. Between 1890 and 1960 the

Department of Lands was responsible for the offi cial photographic record of

South Australia. Initially, a government photographic unit, using equipment

already owned by the Department of Lands’ Survey Department, began to

record government achievements, state celebrations and, for a fee, took

photographs for annual reports for other government departments and for

parliamentary records. Over the years, this growing collection also became a

repository for photographs specially commissioned by the South Australian

Government, including those taken by Frank Hurley in 1935 for the State’s

Centenary Committee to record the State after 100 years of European

settlement (1836-1936).

By the 1970s the large glass plates used by the unit were little known and

seldom required. The Department of Lands decided to send them to the

South Australian Archives (now State Records). In the mid 1980s the then

Constitutional Museum, a museum of the newly established History Trust of

South Australia, undertook the mammoth task of re-photographing the glass

negatives onto 35mm conventional fi lm negatives and cataloguing the

14 000 images, using workers employed under the Hawke Labor Government’s

Commonwealth Employment Program (CEP).

Since 1985, the images and catalogue have been available at the History Trust

of South Australia for research and use in publications. Extra information and

corrections have been added to the catalogue by volunteer George Brooks who

spent many years at the History Trust as well as at State Records identifying

the images that were a mystery to the 1980s cataloguers. The actual glass

negatives remain with State Records. The History Trust holds the only catalogue

and copy set of the Collection.

Recorded within the Collection are ceremonial events of all kinds, the day-to-

day progress of major public works and the growth of townships, ports, industry

and trade. The Collection shows South Australians at work and at play. In short,

the collection covers everything that interested governments either directly or

indirectly.

In late 2005, work commenced on a digitisation project for this signifi cant

Collection. Once completed, sometime in 2006, it will enable researchers

a much quicker and more effi cient means of tapping into this wonderful

photographic record. ces Manager, History Trust of South Australia on 8203

9873, or email: [email protected].

The Glass Negatives Collection images used in this booklet will be available for viewing on the History

Trust of South Australia website after Friday 5 May. www.history.sa.gov.au/history_week.htm

Adelaide’s most beautiful arcade has served South Australians

for over 120 years. Built in 1885 Adelaide Arcade refl ects

the maturing of the 19th century Rundle Street retail centre

development. The extensive use of cast iron and plate glass

on the street frontage and arcade shows the progressive work

of architectural fi rm Withall and Wells. The entrances from

Rundle Mall and Grenfell Street are of Italian style.

A most notable feature is the octagonal tower and dome with

a pre-Federation Australian Coat of Arms at each end of the

Adelaide Arcade. Gay’s Arcade joins Adelaide Arcade at right

angles near the centre. The interior of the Arcades has been

carefully restored to copy the original Carrara marble and

black and white tile design on the fl oors. Both arcades have

two levels with the fi rst fl oors remaining largely original.

The former Destitute Asylum includes the Female Section, the Store, the Chapel and the Lying-in Hospital. The four buildings are all that remain of a large complex of 50 buildings sited around quadrangles in this area. The Chapel was built as a schoolroom for the orphaned children of the Destitute Asylum in 1865. The Lying-in hospital on the western boundary was constructed in 1877/78 for use by women in confi nement. The female section initially housed women and children and served as a girl’s reformatory from 1871 to 1881. Built in 1859 it abutted a wall from the original Asylum constructed in 1854. SKYCITY Adelaide - part of the Adelaide Railway Station complex NORTH TERRACE, ADELAIDE

Valet parking on property, disabled visitor parking available

S Plus facilities in Railway StationR

The Railway Station complex was completed in 1928, following a design by architects Garlick and Jackman. The large neo-classical building was part of the overall modernisation of the State’s railway system instigated by Railway commissioner WA Webb. Despite loud criticism at the time for the ‘extravaganza’, the Gunn Labour Government supported the project as a source of employment for many workers during the early Depression years. The centrepiece of the building is the grand Marble Hall, originally the Railway Station’s waiting area. Topped by a 12-metre dome, Marble Hall is supported by eight giant Corinthian columns and fi nished with European marble. Four of the original telephone booths remain in the Marble Hall. In the 1980s Marble Hall became the entrance to the Adelaide Casino and in 2001 the home of SKYCITY. Smyth Memorial Chapel, West Terrace Cemetery CATHOLIC CEMETERY Wylde Road, opposite Wright Street, Adelaide

At main entrance to cemetery

West Terrace Cemetery initially comprised an oval area of 32 acres (12.95 hectares) on Colonel William Light’s plan of 1837. From 1843 the cemetery was run on non-denominational lines until 1845 when the Reverend Michael Ryan requested a section of land for the Catholic community. They received four acres (1.6 hectares) which was expanded slightly as other lands within the cemetery were relinquished. This octagonal early Gothic revival chapel is signifi cant because buildings of this form, date and style are rare in South Australia. The building was opened on 22 October 1871 by the Right Reverend Dr Shiel. It contains the remains of Reverend John Smyth to whom the chapel was dedicated and Bishop Shiel who died in 1872.
