The Health Information Technology for Economic and Clinical
Health Act (HITECH Act)
• HITECH is meant to stimulate industry-wide adoption of electronic
healthcare records (EHR)
• HITECH provides $19.2 billion in stimulus money
• The goal is to encourage 90% of all doctors to be meaningful users
of EHR
• Penalties will begin for late adopters of EHR in 2015
President Barack Obama signed the
HITECH Act, part of the American Recovery
and Reinvestment Act
HITECH ACT
Only a small percentage of physicians are using EHR in their
practices
• 4 out of 10 doctors use EHR in their practice
• 2 out of those 4 use EHR systems to its fullest potential
• The remaining physicians are buried under paperwork
