Consolidation of Power

30th January 1933 Hitler was legally appointed Chancellor.

27th February 1933 The Reichstag building was destroyed by a massive fire.

28th February 1933 The decree "For the Protection of People and State" was passed, givingthe government sweeping powers to suspend civil liberties and freedoms.

5th March 1933 Nazis gained only 44% of the vote (288 seats) in the last ever Reichstagelections, failing to win the overall majority of votes as expected.23rd March 1933 The Centre Party voted with Hitler who gained # of the vote needed topass The Enabling Act - this allowed Hitler to make any law he wanted for the next fouryears without the approval of the Reichstag or the President.

24th March 1933 The Enabling Law came into effect.

7th April 1933 Jews and political opponents were removed from important jobs and keypositions in Germany's state governments were taken over by Nazis.

2nd May 1933 Trade unions were banned, their funds taken and their leaders imprisoned.They were replaced by a Nazi union, the DAF.

22nd June 1933 The Social Democratic Party was officially banned.

5th July 1933 The Catholic Centre Party disbanded itself.

14th July 1933 Germany was officially declared to be a one party state.

12th November 1933 Plebiscite put to German people: 92% vote in favour of the Nazis.

30th January 1934 Law For the Reconstruction of the State put Nazis in charge of all stategovernments.

30th June 1934 Night of the Long Knives.

1st August 1934 Law passed combining posts of President and Chancellor for Hitler, cominginto effect on Hindenburg's death.

2nd August 1934 Hindenburg dies.

19th August 1934 Plebiscite put to German people: 89.93% vote 'yes' for the Nazis.

20th August 1934 Army Oath of Allegiance to Hitler.
