HIV Funding

• In the early years that follow the discovery of HIV:– ARV treatment is too expensive and not

sustainable in developing worlds– Focus on prevention

• Bold advocacy effort. As a consequence:– The price of ARVs decreased drastically– The hope to access life saving drugs was

created for millions of people in the South

• Then new Funding mechanisms were created:– MAP (WB)– The Global Fund– PEPFAR

• An unprecedented amount of funding was mobilized to fight AIDS, even if there was still a gap

• Millions of people were put in ARV treatment, even if millions are still on waiting list

• We have never been so close to our ultimate objective to end AIDS

HIV Funding (3)• 2008, the world faced to an economic and

financial crisis• Because of those crisis most of the donors

cut their contribution to the fight against AIDS• Gains realized the past decades are now in

jeopardy • Again, Advocates from around the world

engaged in advocacy effort to protect the gains and to explore for additional sources of funding
