Mrs Dani Bath and Mr Matthew Reece
On the 30 and
31 July, Mrs Dani
Bath and Mr Matt
Reece attended the LivingWorks Applied
Suicide Intervention Skills Training (ASIST)
run by Lifeline. The course aims to enhance
caregivers' abilities to help a person at risk.
Participants learn to recognise when
someone may be at risk of suicide and
respond in ways that help increase their
immediate safety and link them to help.
Our school's
Student
Wellbeing Team is
working hard to
increase
awareness,
knowledge and
skills of Mental
Health issues
amongst both sta and students. We now
have 4 teachers trained in the 2 day course,
and the whole sta were trained in a very
valuable 3 hour SafeTalk (Suicide
Prevention Awareness) program on the
Term 3 Sta Development Day.
As a result of this training we are now able
to oer the LivingWorks safeTalk program
to our entire Year 11 cohort in Term 4,
helping them to support each other and
contribute to a suicide-safer community.
We would like to acknowledge and oer our
appreciation to North Gosford Rotary who
have sponsered these courses for us as a
part of their SOKs: Save Our Kids campaign.

Welcome to our babychicks!
Year 11 Agriculture incubated eggs from the
HKHS chickens (Isa Browns and Polish
Frizzles) earlier this term and have been
eagerly awaiting the arrival of our newest
babies. 21 days later, right on schedule, the
chicks began hatching!
During this process, the students learned
how to candle eggs to check for fertility and
have studied the developmental process of
a chicken embryo. The chicks will continue
to be monitored and cared for by the
students and will form part of a trial to
investigate growth rates.

It has been very busy in Special Education
with lots of exciting events so far and a few
more to come this term. In week 3 our
students were invited to see the CCGS
production of Oliver. The show had a huge
cast and chorus and the students got to
meet some of the actors aer the
performance. The behaviour of our
students was fantastic. The kids were
enthralled.
Some comments from our students
included:
Elliot “Wow, that was wonderful.”
Brady “Loved It” and he did a little dance
and sang “Consider yourself”
Wanda “The Show was fabulous.”
Breanna “Loved it, loved it, loved it.”

Week 3 also saw 40 of our students travel to
Olympic park to see The Wheel Chair Rugby
world cup. We witnessed an incredibly
close game between New Zealand and
Colombia with Colombia winning 60 to 59
aer two extra time periods. Our students
were in awe of the amazing determination
and athleticism of the competitors.
Our new trampoline has arrived and has
been well used in these last weeks. A big
thanks to the parent group of our Special
Education Centre who fundraised through
BBQ’s to pay for this.
We have also been using our new laptops
that the schools has funded. We have a
charging trolley and 30 laptops to use in
our classes. They are fast and the students
have been making good use of them. Many
thanks also to Magenta Shores Golf and
Country club in particular John and Jackie
Tesoriero for the donation of funds to
purchase iPads.
Our coee shop initiative is still going
strong with 45 parents visiting the coee
shop on our parent coee shop day. Our
next parent coee shop will be Wednesday
22 August. Parents of Students in Special
Education are welcome to attend. Please
phone the school to make a booking.
Kirsty Abigail is painting a mural in our area
as her Max Potential project. The mural was
designed and overseen by Kirsty with the
help of Sirena Butterworth and Khaleesa
Whitaker. The mural depicts bees and a bee
hive and has enhanced the entrance to our
playground area.

Congratulations again to our Mock Trial
Team. The have won the second
elimination round defeating Lambton High
School and have now made it through to
the top 16 schools in the competition.
What a great result Katie Lewis, Eli
Clarkson, Alexandra Sidiropoulos, Leo
Coleman, Luke Mirfield and Thomas Marsh.
The Mock Trial Competition is conducted by
The Law Society of New South Wales and is
a practical means of introducing students
to the law and to increase understanding of
the basis of our judicial system.
The competition also helps students to
increase basic skills such as listening,
speaking, writing, reading and analysing.
The goal is not to win for the sake of
winning, but to learn and understand the
meaning of good citizenship through
participation in our system of law and
justice. All who participate in the Mock Trial
Competition are winners in this sense.

Sydney North AthleticsCarnival
This year at the Sydney North Athletics
Carnival, the Special Education Unit was
represented by four Para Athletes; Ebony
Wright, Lateesha Mead, Charlotte Gott and
Krystal Harris. The girls had a great day and
should be congratulated for their
perseverance for getting this far to
represent Brisbane Water. The Special
Education Unit has long had a tradition of
encouraging students to push themselves
and try new sports such as Athletics, with
past students such as Adam Moyle and
Jessica Buth achieving Gold Medals at the
CHS Athletics Carnival.
By the end of the day the girls were
rewarded with three students qualifying to
go on and represent Henry Kendall High
School at the CHS Athletics Championships.
We look forward to seeing how they go in
September.

The day was really cold we had really heavy
rain. My mum and I le the Central Coast at
5:15am so we could miss all the heavy
traic. I was on set for 9 hrs in total. I got to
each lunch with some of the stars. The
episode I was in air on Tuesday 5 June. I
was apart of 'beat the cancer fair'. My role
was a fair goer who ate gelato for the day !
Ziggy asked me where was hers, that was
funny cause she wanted some but didn’t
get any. On site I wore purple singlet purple
jeans with a apricot singlet top with green

Year 7
Lots of things happening in Year 7 at the
moment.
Our Middle School students are currently
collaborating across dierent classes to
create poetry magazines that will be
published later this term. Students are also
filming and editing movie trailers based on
their recent novel study. On top of that,
students are learning about the design
process in IC (Investigate &
Communicate) where they are developing
their own storage items. The teachers are
busy too as preparations for $20 boss are
well underway.
In Mathematics, Year 7 are revising for their
assessment task that will happen in Week 5.
In PDHPE students have been working on
their dance moves in preparation for their
'Bush Dance' assessment.
During Sport, students have shown
exemplary behaviour in moving to and
from Adcock Park during their netball unit.
Later this term they will move into their
'Recreation' unit which involves Laser Tag
and Ten Pin Bowling.
Our YAP students have been using both
logic and creativity to plan their 'Mission to
Mars' in PBL. In English they are attempting
to create advertisements that 'sell the
unsellable', and in History students are
studying the Aztec society. To celebrate
Science Week, students have been involved
in a range of fun activities such as
constructing towers with pasta and
marshmallows as well as using energy
transfer to light bunsen burners.
A huge thank you to all parents who
attended the recent Parent/Teacher
Interviews and YAP Celebration Evenings. It
is great to see so many parents working
together with the school.
Congratulations to Alexander McGavin and
Deklan Rayner who participated in the
Legacy Junior Public Speaking
competition. Both boys delivered excellent
prepared and impromptu speeches and
impressed the judges. Alexander received a
Highly Commended which is made even
more impressive given that the boys were
competing against students who were
generally two years older.
We recently had the pleasure of listening to
our potential Year 7 leaders deliver quality
speeches as they ran for SRC election.
Congratulations to Alydia Dumpert and
Alexander McGavin who were successful.
We look forward to hearing some of their
great ideas for the school.
As always, students who are doing good
things around the school are rewarded with
'Vivos'. Well done to Brodie Norman, Luella
Marcatili and Jessica Worboyes who have
been earning lots of 'Vivos' recently.

Max Potential
This year, we have three students
participating in the Max Potential project.
Max Potential is a leader ship development
program that connects emerging young
leaders with local community and business
leaders, who receive professional coach
training. The program runs over five
months with one-on-one coaching,
experiential workshops and a focus on
delivering innovative community service
projects to make a dierence locally.
Mason Colwell conducted an outstanding
careers seminar named “Outside & Beyond
Schooling" which included a panel of
community representatives come to school
and discuss employment and further
education opportunities with all of Year 9.
Guest speakers from TAFE NSW, University
of Newcastle, atWork Australia and
Saronbell assisted Mason in his
presentation. Well done!
Marley Irvine conducted a Year 6 and 7
wellbeing day as a transition for the
incoming Year 6 students to meet some of
the current year 7 students. The day was
centred on an anti bullying theme and
recognised support networks within the
schools. Marley was recognised for her
professionalism and received the following
feedback “she was quite well spoken, she
was engaging and my students really got a
lot out of her lessons.” Thank you to Alisha,
Sirena, Sophie, Emily, Maddie, Jack,
Ananda, Brad, ach and Antonio for their
support of a fellow student and leadership
on the day. Fantastic work!
Kirsty Abigail is currently completing her
final project that includes a gigantic mural
placed next to our Special Education Unit.
We cannot wait to see the final project.
Year 11 Exams
The Year 11 exams are taking place in week
nine and ten this term. Any student who
would like to apply for special provisions
must see Ms Wilkinson in Student Services
as soon as possible. I would like everyone
to remember that study support that is
available for everyone Tuesday and
Thursday aernoon in the library. This
provides you with an additional four hours
of support each week; please make the
most of this opportunity. Many students
also received a study timetable to help
them plan out their study in the following
weeks. Time management is essential and I
encourage all of you to plan carefully and
maintain a life balance.

We are very lucky to have a diverse range of

13 Reasons Why: whatevery parent needs toknow
By: Julie Inman Grant, eSafety
Commissioner
13 Reasons Why was one of the most talked
about series streamed on Netflix Australia
last year, quickly cementing itself as a cult
hit—especially with young people. It comes
as no surprise, as young people find it easy
to connect with a compelling and
suspenseful story.
We need to be aware that popular media
portrayal of these complex issues can be
taken out of context and may pose risks for
young people that are vulnerable,
impulsive, or have been experiencing issues
with mental health and distress. For these
reasons, it is important that young people
are not only aware of serious issues such as
self-harm and suicide, but also that parents
check in and keep the lines of
communication open.
It is no secret that the release of 13 Reasons
Why sparked concerns from mental health
experts in Australia, and around the globe.
If you haven’t had a chance to watch the
series yourself, the story centres on a
female teenage suicide and her “13
reasons” for doing so. Headspace do an
excellent job at explaining why these
portrayals can cause serious impact on
vulnerable young people—extensive
exposure to this type of content in popular
media can not only lead to a potential
contagion eect but can also cause
desensitisation to the severity and finality
of suicide.
It was these concerns that propelled me to
reach out to Netflix last year in Washington,
D.C to open up a conversation about the
crucial role we can all play in creating a safe
and supportive environment for young
people, especially those that are
vulnerable. Being new territory for Netflix, I
was encouraged to see their team jump on
board and collaborate with leading
Australian mental health organisations
Headspace and Everymind, to develop
support materials for young people to
access once season 2 of 13 Reasons Whyairs
in Australia.
Should negative emotions be triggered, by
either viewing the series or negative
conversations at school, work, or within the
media, the resources oer guidance and
support to young people, detailing where
to go for help and actions that can be taken.
With season 2 of 13 Reasons Why set to air
tonight at 5 pm EST on Netflix Australia, we
encourage parents, carers and teachers to
have a look at the resources, available at
Wellbeing Corner

https://13reasonswhy.info familiarise
yourself with them and share them with
your children and anyone else within your
community. It is important that we, as
parents, carers and educators, are engaged
with our children and keep the lines of
communication open. Even if your child is
unlikely to watch the show, they might be
able to oer support to a friend at school
that they may be worried about.
While there is no panacea for protecting
young people from harmful online content,
as the national coordinating online safety
body, we will continue our eorts to engage
and encourage industry to oer better
safety approaches and safeguards to
protect our young people.
When it comes to mental health, Australia is
truly world-leading. For Australians in need
of psychological support, help with online
issues such as exposure to harmful online
content, there are a range of mental health
services and online safety organisations
that can assist. Contact ReachOut, Kids
Helpline, Lifeline or visit our Online
Wellbeing Directory for guidance and
support.
How much is too muchtime online?
https://esafety.gov.au
There is no magic guideline for the ‘right’
amount of time for children to spend
online. This is a matter for you to decide—
but there are guidelines that can help you
in addition to factoring in the age of your
kids, their maturity level and your family
dynamics.
What do the experts suggest is
appropriate for entertainment?
A great place to start is understanding what
health professionals recommend. The
Department of Health has established
Australia’s Physical Activity and Sedentary
Behaviour Guidelines, which include links
to brochures, fact sheets and tips for
physical entertainment.
Australia’s National Physical Activity and
Sedentary Behaviour Guidelines *
Your child’s age Recommended screen
time
Under 2 years Zero. Babies and
toddlers should not
watch any
television or other
electronic media (DVDs,
computers and electronic
games).
Over 2 years Less than one hour
per day. Limit
their time
sitting and watching TV or
using other electronic
media to less than one
hour per day.
5 to 17 years Less than two hours
per day. Limit
their use of
electronic media for
entertainment (i.e. TV,
computers and seated
electronic games) to no
more than two
hours per day.
*These guidelines are for entertainment
purposes only and do not include screen
time for educational purposes.
What about screen time for educational
purposes?
The internet is a great tool for educational
support and some of the time that your
child will spend online will be for this
purpose. In fact, more schools are now
implementing a ‘bring your own device
policy’ in the classroom to take advantage
of online education in the classroom. It is
crucial that you help your children strike
the right balance between online time for
education and online time for
entertainment and social networking.
How can I help my kids strike the right
balance?
Health experts recommend limiting
sedentary behaviour because of risks linked
to chronic disease, obesity, sleeping issues,
poor academic performance and reduced
face-to-face social contact. But screen time
in moderation can provide many benefits
including enhanced learning experiences,
creativity, social interaction, entertainment,
support in literacy and numeracy skills and
improvement in motor skills. So striking a
balance between social activities that
include active time away from screens is
incredibly important.
How can I tell if my child is online too
much?
If your child’s online activity appears to be
having a negative impact on their personal
wellbeing or physical behaviour (or on your
family), then consider discussing
expectations and time limits. Some of these
noticeable changes that can indicate
excessive internet use include:
17/08/2018 HKHS Highlights - Issue Eight
https://inewsletter.co/issue/vlenzY/print/#/0 18/23
online activities interfering with
general health and wellbeing
obsession with particular websites
or games
anger when being asked to take a
break from online activity
appearing anxious or irritable when
away from the computer
spending increasing amounts of
time online
a declined interest in social
activities like meeting friends or
playing sport
excessive tiredness
decline in academic performance
and failing to complete schoolwork
seemingly isolated or withdrawn
reduced personal hygiene
negative changes in their behaviour
ongoing headaches, eye strain and
sleep disturbance.
How can I tell if behavioural changes are
just their age?
Some behavioural changes are a normal
part of growing up (teenagers, anyone!),
but try to find out why your child is
struggling, as there may be underlying
issues such as cyberbullying, friendship
diiculties or mental health issues. As part
of your conversation, ask your child about
how much time they spend online and
explain why it is worrying. Try not to show
that you disapprove or they might shut
down communication altogether. Talking to
their school may also reveal academic or
social issues but they may also be able to
provide support.
