I have once heard a joke which goes something like this,

“A few days before Christmas, two young brothers were spending the night at their grandparent's house. When it was time to go to bed, they wanted to do the right thing, so they both knelt down to say their prayers. Suddenly, the younger one began to do so in a very loud voice. "Dear Lord, please ask Santa Claus to bring me a play-station, a mountain-bike and a telescope." His older brother leaned over and nudged his brother and said, "Why are you shouting your prayers? God isn't deaf." "I know" he replied, "But Grandma is!”

Christmas, is a time of joy and festivity. It is a time of new beginnings and celebration. Christmas is often portrayed as a time of gifts and presents but it really isn‟t. Jesus Christ was born in the most humble of places, a stable. The only companions that he had at his birth were animals. Animals are pure, humble and have no sin inside them, maybe that‟s why he was born there, to be born next to the creatures on this planet, which haven‟t sinned.

Christmas is a time which is celebrated by millions, rich and poor all of them which comes from different roads in life and different religions, they all stand side by side, hand in hand and celebrate. This is a very unique type of celebration, because Christmas has no boundaries to any culture, nation or religion.

For many of you, you might not be the sharpest knife in the draw on your knowledge of Christmas. Christmas is the celebration of the birth of Christ. Jesus was born in Bethlehem, with no place to stay; he was born in a stable. Christmas is the dawn of a new begging or as we humans of today say, the start of A.D, which derived from Latin, means in the time of our lord.

Every little child has fond memories of Christmas, maybe its lights, the sounds, songs or just seeing that old, bearded man with silky white hair, which we call Santa Clause. You might think Santa Clause is not real and that he is just a fictional character, similar to, The Easter bunny and tooth fairy but it isn‟t, Santa is actually real up to an extent.

The true story of Santa Claus begins with Nicholas, who was born during the third century in the village of Patara. His wealthy parents, who raised him to be a devoted Christian, died in an epidemic while Nicholas was still young. Obeying Jesus' words to "sell what you own and give the money to the poor," Nicholas used his whole inheritance to assist the needy, the sick, and the suffering. He dedicated his life to serving God and was made Bishop of Myra while still a young man. Bishop Nicholas became known throughout the land for his generosity to those in need, his love for children, and his concern for sailors and ships. There was one story about St. Nicholas which tells of a poor man with three daughters. In those days a woman's father had to offer prospective husbands something of value—a dowry. This poor man's daughters, without dowries, were therefore destined to be sold into slavery. Mysteriously, on three different occasions, a bag of gold appeared in their home-providing the needed dowries. The bags of gold, tossed through an open window, are said to have landed in stockings or shoes left before the fire to dry. This led to the custom of children hanging stockings or putting out shoes, eagerly awaiting gifts from Saint Nicholas.

There are many reasons why Christmas is one of the most anticipated occasions in Australia and many parts of the world. It might be because of all the colours and gifts or maybe because of the sheer joy it brings to the people of today. Whatever it is, Christmas is a big part of our lives, and hopefully it will stay that way for many, many years to come.

Pandit Jawaharlal Nehru, the legendary freedom fighter was the first prime minister of the independent India. He was born on 14 November 1889 at Allahabad. He is also called as the architect of modern India. Nehru set India on the path of democracy and nurtured the parliament, multi-party system, independent judiciary and free press. He was very fond of children and roses. He often referred to children as the real strength of a country and as the very foundation of society. He believed that children should be carefully and lovingly nurtured as they are the future of the nation and citizens of tomorrow.

He was the beloved of all the children who gave him the endearing name of „Chacha Nehru‟. As a tribute to Nehru‟s great love for children, November 14th has been celebrated all over India as Children‟s Day. On this day most of the schools in India have cultural programmes with the students managing it all. Numerous cultural, social and even corporate institutions conduct competitions for children on this exciting and frolic day. Teachers of the school perform songs and dances for their students. Various competitions like quizzes, fancy dress competitions and elocutions are organised on this day. The real message of Chacha Nehru is to provide the children with a safe and loving environment in which to grow as well as to give them ample and equal opportunities through which they can take great strides and contribute to the progress of the nation. Children‟s Day teaches every one of us to be innocent and inquisitive as a child who enjoys learning in whatever he/she does with a big smile.
