Live work units developed adjacent to the train station in Portland’s Chinatown. The emphasis was to form collaboration areas for businesses and provide a conference space. The atrium space provides a semi-private public space for residents and circulation for the businesses. The lower floors can be open their wall to the public if they choose, decreasing boundaries between a passerby and businesses.

Harmonic Deviation

Music school designed with public practice rooms and library to encourage sharing music with community musicians and students. The school is centered around a large auditorium, the form of which is derived from an analysis of tonic and dominant notes within a chord.

“I make these spaces where the spaces themselves are perceivers or in some way pre-form perception.” James Turrell

physical

PERCEPTION

when designing a space, it is important to put ourselves in position of the user. when the user is distressed, nauseous, in pain, under heavy medication, paranoid, or in their body’s ight mode, their perception and experience of a space is very dierent from our perspective. light has the ability to distort our vision and therefore our experience of a space. i have created light experiences to displace the designer, creating disorientation and discomfort sothat there can be an empathetic design response. this will provide the contrast needed to understand the needs of the user.
