to contact the Grand Royal Matron with any questions or concerns.

The “holiday season” is upon us for sure! Even in these COVID times when we are asked to

meet only in small groups, we have many things to be thankful for and hopefully warm wishes

will come your way for a special holiday season.

Our plans may be different than they traditionally are, but we all need to remain safe and

positive! I have never cooked Thanksgiving for two, but I did this year. We had a zoom call

with all of our family, and it was great to have them all together because miles often come

between us. I do believe we have a new tradition for the holidays – zoom call with all!

Christmas is a very special holiday in America. American Christmas traditions began quite

early with the coming of the Moravians of Bethlehem, in Pennsylvania in 1800 s. Though some

believe the tradition of decorating christmas trees began with the arrival of German

immigrants.

The Yule Log comes from the legend that Joseph, Mary and Jesus were very cold when the

shepherds found them on Chirstmas night. So the shepherds got some branches or twigs to

burn to keep them warm. In some parts of Ireland, people have a large candle instead of a log

and this is only lit on New Year’s Eve. The custom of burning the Yule Log goes back to, and

before, mdeieval times. It was originally a Nordic tradition. Yule is the name of the old

Winter Solstice festivals in Scandinavia and other parts of northern Europe, such as

Germany.

The legend of the mistletoe is one of the most famous sympols of Christmas and also the

most recognizable; it is one of the most sacred and magical plans in Christian folklore. The

springs of this plant are extensively used in Christmas decorations and it is also believed that

the plant can protect the house from lightening and fire. Some have considered it to bestow

life and fertility; a protection against poison; and an aphrodisiac. The mistletoe of the

sacred oak was especially sacred to the ancient Celtic Druids.

There are numerous legends associated with the Christmas tree and how it came to be associated

with Christmas. But, legend or no legend, the fact that the Christmas tree is and has been an

integral part of Christmas celebrations cannot be ignored. As this ritual has almost been there

from eternal times, it is difficult to find out which was the first Christmas when this tree

became a part of the Christmas celebration. There are a number of legends and folktales which

are told to the young lads in Europe in order to teach them about the importance of a Christmas

tree at a Christmas celebration. It is said that the first Christmas tree was decorated in

Germany in the 700's. But it is just a supposition as there are no written proof to support this

fact.

Some may not celebrate Christmas but celebrate Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or other special celebration.

I wish you a wonderful celebration that has many traditions you and your family hold near and

dear to your hearts. For all members - make the most of times with family and friends by

whatever methods you have available.

In Amaranth love and service,

HL Patti Nielsen, Grand Royal Matron
