Battle of Highbury

England v Italy in 1934

Which was the real world cup? Italy beat

Czechoslovakia in the official second world cup

final. Five months later the ‘friendly’ match

between the world champions and England

was maybe the real world cup match. It was a

violent game which England won 3-2 but the

Italian dirty play made the headlines.

Football A follower of the red devils from an early age,

Harry remains a fan to this day. He has seen

a lot of changes.

Old Traffod itself has gone from the post war

80,000 capacity ground through a low of

40,000 when all-seader stadia were required

for all first and second divison clubs and

back to its current over 75,000 capacity.

Like the ground, the team has had its ups

and downs. The low must have been the

loss of seven of the “Busby Babes” in the

tragic Munich air crash in 1958.

After the disaster, Matt Busby started again

to build one of the best teams ever. A team

full of names which are still familiar and

including footgalls first ever super star

George Best.

In 1968 United beat Benfica in the European

Cup final at Wembley with Harry there to

cheer them along. Matt Busby was knighted

soon afterwards.

The transfer of Denis Law to city, haunted

the team in 1974. He scored at Old Trafford

in April 1974, on a day when United's

relegation to the Second Division was

confirmed.

In ’86 Fergie joined the team and stayed at

the helm until just recently. He brought Eric

Cantona and renewed majic to the reds.

Cantonas retired in early 97 leaving rising

new stars including David Beckham and

Gary Neville.

In 1999 and 2008, United again won the European Cup

The best Wembley ever

CARS

Somehow managing to obtain a drivers license with out taking a test while

doing National Service in the British Army, Harry loves to change cars every

few years. He is loyal to brands – sticking with family friendly Vauxhalls for

many years. Two adults, four children and a dog up and down to Blackpool

– not a problem. Next came the Rovers and now a days a sensible Honda

is the carriage of choice.

We are still struggling to

emulate his ability to have

the tax man pay for the car …

Drinks

Everyone knows that Harry likes his red wine, brandy, whisky and Guinness.

But do you know how much coffee he drinks? Or that when he gave up coffee he became addicted to drinking hot water?

Reliable informers tell

that Harry can't go a

family meal without

knocking over his red

wine glass

Thursday's child has far to go

Australia, America, Tunisia, Majorca, Russia, Spain, Crete, Turkey, Hong

Kong, Singapore, Isle of Man, Portugal and more …

From Derbyshire to Wales

& DOGS

Always an animal lover, Harry has had many

dogs, from Beauty to Sara.

…He also had encounters with other animals

Family

One way or another, Harry’s children follow in his footsteps. From Michael and Mark continuing the work at Elecon (started October 1972 @ Victoria Street Openshaw ) to Diane’s love of glass of what ever. And Christine has moved to the country and got a dog.

Chris Buckley “We were only allowed boring cereal at home, plain Rice Krispies or Weetabix. Grandad would always supply us with the good stuff such as Frosties and Crunchy Nut Cornflakes. Diet Coke only though”

Emma Buckley “… hidden Pringles

and nuts stored in his office to secretly share with us when playing on the computer, looking through photographs he had taken or demonstrating his latest technology purchase ... also all the hours we have all spent with him golf ball hunting in Porthmadog”

The Secrets

Rule 1 - Harry

is always right

Rule 2 - if Harry

is ever wrong

refer to rule 1

(everyone knows – but don’t tell Beryl, Mum, Grandma)

Beer behind the dog food

Wine in the spare room wardrobe

Toffees and sweets in the car

Bottle of Port in the kitchen cupboard

Pringles and nuts stored in his office

… shhhhh secrets!

Do as I say, not as I do

Reliable informers include Chris, Christine, Diane, Emma, Hanna, Helen Mark, and Michael
