∙ Highlighted effects will help blend away white hairs.

∙ White hair is often more dominant around the hair line, place your lightest & brightest colours here to help with re-growth.

∙ Opt for a deeper root colour & work with a combination of golden, richer tones to inject warmth & create a glow.

∙ Gentle contrast is the most flattering option, creating shadow & light will have the most glamorous results.

∙ Use professional in-salon colourants only that are specifically designed to cover grey hair gently without drying it out.

THE GUIDE…Cuts over 55

∙ Blunt cuts can accentuate lines, softer edges are more flattering.

∙ If you are going to have longer hair than bob length you really need to take extra care with condition & styling to keep it looking healthy. Add longer layers around the jaw line & a cut which sits on or just below the collarbone is really flattering.

∙ Avoid wispy fringes – they can look straggly. A side swept fringe is a glamorous option.

∙ For short hair looks, gamine crops are super flattering but geometric shorter hair is harder to pull off (because of the sharp lines).

∙ Short hair with lots of chopping layers will disguise thinning hair, use the Nioxin System tailored for your hair type – this combined with a great colour to add depth is a game changer! Make sure you have a good cut for this shape, as too long in the back & too short on the top will have the opposite effect.

It sounds high maintenance but using the next generation glossing colours the re-growth is extremely minimal as it gently softens away as the hair grows out. Step 1: Start by prepping damp hair with L’Oréal Professionnel Tecni.ART PLI to add volume and bulk on top. Blow-dry hair, smoothing from root to tip using a large ceramic brush.

I don’t remember a time in my life ever when I have washed my hair, let it dry naturally & liked it, let alone loved it. I have loved

my hair & still do (every time I go to the salon have a beautiful blow-dry & walk down the street swishing as I go) but never, ever when I let it do its own thing, until this summer… I went on a 2 week long camping trip (that is the first shocking revelation) & secondly

I used a communal shower daily so no 40min blow-dry for me. It was get out as quickly as possible! But I learnt a quick way to make it look good & accepted that I have wavy hair I need to channel the beachy, no-fuss (as if) look! But, & here’s the thing, I asked all my friends & none (except 1 – we all have that friend) are happy with their hair texture but want to learn how to work with it. This is what the experts say…

How to:

HAIR FoCUSHAIR FoCUS

Embrace your natural hair typewith advice from the experts

• Curly hair, like wavy hair, tends to be dryer, swap your conditioner for a moisture rich treatment, Kérastase Masque Oleo Relax £27.50 works wonders especially when used with a Tangle Teezer £10.60 in the shower to coat every stand.

• The shower is the last time you should attempt to comb or brush your hair, any other time will result in an uncontrollable amount of frizz!

• Invest in a diffuser, Diva Diffuser Pro £9.99, to give lift if you need it & bounce or just help dry curls after the shower gently.

• Stop shampooing daily, this won’t work for your hair. Use a gentle cleanse like Paul Mitchell Awapuhi Wild Ginger Moisturizing Shampoo £16.95.

• Have your hair cut by a Headmasters Couture Curls expert, every salon has at least one, they will be able to dry cut your curls to create the most flattering shape for you.

• Shampoo your roots not your ends! They will get clean as the shampoo rinses off & extra shampooing will only make your hair harder to control.

• Use a deep conditioner, wavy hair often tends to be drier, this will help.

• Styling cream – invest in a good one this is your biggest tool in your arsenal against frizz, try [1] Paul Mitchell Super Skinny Serum £17.95

• Blast your roots dry on a medium heat gently stretching your hair with your fingers to smooth it out, blot the ends with a towel (or better still kitchen roll to avoid roughening up the cuticle.)

• Twist your hair into a loose bun & wait until it is completely dry – if it’s thick like mine this bit takes ages (24hrs but it’s worth it.)

• Release your bun & use product to tame ends & eliminate any left over frizz, I like [2] K Styling Touche Finale £19.50.

• If it still needs a little more definition, use a large barrel curling tong to add some oomph to random pieces (only use from the ear down to avoid mushrooming!)

Wavy

Straight

• If you have thick & straight hair you were born blessed! You can do pretty much do anything with your hair. Your only potential issues are frizz (easily solved with a deep conditioner & an oil like Mythic Oil £15.99) & a wig-like look (solved by a good cut with graduated layers!)

• If you have fine, straight hair keep it short (above shoulder length works best). A great cut will take all the work out of your hair.

• Colour it! Colouring fine hair will thicken up & roughen up your hair strands making them look more voluminous.

• Shampoo is your friend, wash daily if not every second day with a shampoo like Paul Mitchell Shampoo 1 £9.75.

Q: Where will you be in 5 years?SIAN: “In 5 years I want to still be involved with writing and teaching our courses, I’m always striving to learn new things, and the exciting thing for me about hairdressing is that there are always new techniques and products coming out, so in 5 years it will all be different again!”SUZANNE: “Already in the 6 1/2 years I have been with Headmasters I feel that I have accomplished so much. However, education is where my main passion lies! In 5 years I see myself really pushing the education we do at Headmasters to the next level in a new Academy that will be not only a diverse education hub, but also a place to express everyone’s creativity!”

Q: What’s an average day spent doing for you?SIAN: “When I wake up I need to double check where I’m going that day! At the moment I’m mainly teaching. Whenever I get a break I’m checking my emails to see if there are any exciting jobs coming up, so multitasking is often essential.”

SUZANNE: “An average day for me is teaching at our Senior Academy, running workshops and doing demos about our fantastic Colour Menu.”

Q: Who inspires you? SIAN: “For me, it’s Sam McKnight, my favourite look he has done would have to be Kate Moss on the cover of June’s Vogue, I love the effortless chic

Q: Most memorable thing you have done with Headmasters? SIAN: “The most memorable thing I’ve done so far with

Headmasters was that I got to fly to Holland to do a show for M&S. We were styling hair all day for the show which was attended by Dutch royalty, it was all really exciting.”SUZANNE: “I worked on a shoot when I first got into the Art Team with Jonathon Soons for Good Housekeeping! It was a series of makeovers for wives of soldiers who were fighting in Afghanistan and who weren’t coming back for Christmas. We did one particular makeover for a wife who’s partner had passed away and after the makeover I remember her just expressing so much thanks and how she felt amazing, that is why I do my job!”

Q: Best advice you can give someone thinking about becoming a stylist?SIAN: “If you’re creative and passionate, go for it! You will spend hours on your feet, but there’s nothing more rewarding then making someone feel glamorous and confident!”SUZANNE: “You need to have a passion for the industry and the willingness to work hard. It is definitely a journey when training so you need to be prepared for good days and bad days. However once you are qualified it is such a satisfying job!

That feeling when you have a client that isn’t happy about their image and in 45 mins you can completely turn that around. There are not many other jobs you can get that feeling from!”
