The Abel HMT pump is a heavy duty triplex single acting Hydraulic Membrane(HMT) pump. The HMT family actuallyincludes a single piston double actingpiston membrane pump (HMD) and aQuadruple acting (double piston, doubleacting) piston membrane pump (HMQ).The HMT family of pumps can be usedfor capacities up to 1760 GMP (400m3/h) and pressures up to 3626 PSI (25 MPa) (For higher capacities contactABEL).
The entire HMT pump range is equipped with heavy duty preformedmembranes which separate the abrasiveslurry from the hydraulic side of thepump where most of the common wearparts (pistons, cylinder liner etc) are located.
The slurry side of the pump consists of heavy duty cone type slurry valveswith a long life time of up to 6000 to8000 hrs (depending on the operatingconditions). As a standard, the pump is further equipped with pulsation dampeners which enforces minimalNPSHa conditions and minimize thepulsations in the discharge piping.
Abel HMT pumps are being used formany severe duty applications in themining, metalurgical and power industry.
For high temperature applications (suchas autoclave or digester feeding), ourpumps can be equipped with extensionsto the membrane suction manifoldswhich can be cooled by means of acooling jacket (so called drop legs). By means of this technology, slurries with temperature up to 480 °F (250 °C)(or even higher) can be handled.
For corrosive slurry handling, the wetslurry end of Abel pumps can be executed in a number of different alloysteels.

The Abel HMT family of pumps are equippedwith relatively simple and easy to understandfeatures. These features include a mechanicalmembrane stroke control system which willautomatically remedy any shortage or excessof propelling liquid or, in case of emergency,shut down the pump. One of the other features is the externally mounted reductiongearbox which is easy to access.
Many more technical details, such as a rein-forced piston and gear lubrication systemensure that Abel piston membrane pumps willensure maximum longevity, availability andminimum operating costs.
Although the technology is simple and easyto understand, it provides the pump withexcellent protection measures and easy ope-rational procedures.

Maintenance and availability

Due to the longevity of wear partsand the innovative design of replacing these parts, usually anavailability of 96%+ can be achieved, thus avoiding the need of stand-by pumps.
A minimum of maintenance ensu-res a maximum of availability.That´s why ABEL pumps areequipped with heavy duty, longlasting wear parts such as preformed membranes and conevalves.

ABEL HM pumps are being usedfor the transfer of high density tailing slurries in many countriesworldwide. Another importantapplication is the transfer of highdensity fly ash at coal or lignite fired power stations.
Applications and references
ABEL was founded in 1947 in theGerman city of Essen which still isthe heart of the German miningindustry. Consequently, ABELpumps have been used more than50 years in the mining industry formine dewatering and tailings trans-fer applications. Presently, morethan 200 ABEL pumps are in operation in mining, power and metalurgical processing installations.
ABEL HM pumps are in operationat a lignite fired power plant inNorth America for the transfer ofabrasive fly ash. Solids concentra-tion is almost 75%. Similar pumpsare transferring gold tailings inSouth America. Other interestingapplications can be found in India(bauxite), Zambia (copper), CzechRepublic (power), Norway (nickel),Brazil (magnetite) and many morecountries, worldwide.
In addition to tailings transfer atprocessing plants and fly ashtransfer at power plants, ABELpiston membranes pumps arebeing used for applicationssuch as :

Reasonable options for measurement, control and regulation
In order to operate ABEL HMTpumps efficiently, our pumps areusually equipped with a number ofaccessories.These accessories consist of suc-tion and discharge pulsation dam-peners or air vessels , chargepumps, flow meters, pressure gau-ges, monitoring equipment etc.
Even more important for an efficientpump operation is the drive of thepump : HMT pumps are always dri-ven by electric motors which usuallyrequire a soft start up. This can berealized by means of frequency con-verters or other electronic or mecha-nical accessories. Also the controland protection of the pumps is ofimportance. The ABEL control andprotection panels can be mountedlocally and/or in a central controlroom for remote control.
ABEL is capable of supplying stan-dard solutions for drives and con-trol/protection as well as tailor madearrangements which meet thecustomer requirements and specifi-cations. Upon request, ABEL canalso assist in the engineering of thecontrol panels and other accesso-ries.
