Currently a December 2011 graduate of George Washington University's MFA Interior Design Program Renee Golding is excited about continuing a lifelong passion of pursuing a very rewarding career in Hospitality and Institutional design. Renee is the current winner of George Washington University's 2011 Juror's Choice Award for Best MFA Graduate Project in Interior Design. This was awarded over nine amazing graduate projects across GWU’s design department and Renee was truly proud, but also humbled by the honor. Renee does believe her hard work paired with natural design talent allows her to achieve such great honors.

“I am proud to be on a path of becoming one day thought of as a design industry leader. I hope to be amongst an elite group of trailblazers as I continue to explore, create, learn and share my love for the arts and design.”

“To continue to diversify and grow the chapter, adding ‘new blood/fresh ideas’ with every incoming board.“

My NEWH Resolution…

-  Barbara Azzinaro, Committee Development Chair

Founding member, Barbara Azzinaro, president/owner of Cohen Azzinaro Associates, LLC, reflects on 20 years.

In the beginning…In 1990, I was encouraged by my then-sales manager, who was on the board of the Atlanta chapter, to start this chapter, and once I applied for membership to the organization, and voted in, I began that process. As my first step, I contacted Helen Marcus of the Los Angeles original chapter, and she sent me a guide book “How to Start an NEWH Chapter”. I invited several colleagues to the first informal meeting, including Lynda Welte, and from there we all went through our databases to create the first distribution list. I became the Founding President, and after that, remained on the Chartering Board of Directors. We were officially chartered in November 1992 in a ceremony and reception held at the Key Bridge Marriott, and attended by Helen Marcus and Doritt St.John of the Los Angeles Original Founding Chapter of NEWH (then called The Network of Executive Women in Hospitality).

Getting involved…Being involved with this chapter gave me the opportunity to meet and get to know a great number of people on different levels in the industry, including respected clients and colleagues, many of whom, have become lifelong friends as well. The number one expectation was to grow the chapter and thus begin our work of raising funds for, and awarding scholarships to students in the Hospitality Industry. The chapter has exceeded expectations thanks to the great ideas and leadership of all the wonderful and talented members who have been part of our chapter over the years!

The future looks bright…Our chapter has evolved and grown, to such a diversified membership and leadership, that I can hardly wait to see our growth over the NEXT twenty years.I am so much in awe, and extremely proud, of how well-respected our chapter has become over the years, not only within NEWH, but within the entire hospitality industry, and I feel honored to have been the catalyst.

Hillary McElroyGeorge Washington UniversityHillary McElroy is a 5-year Bachelor of Business Administration- Master of Tourism Administration student, concentrating in hospitality management at The George Washington University. During her time at GWU she has been actively involved in Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity, serving on the executive board, an RA, Americorps education volunteer, and currently is president of Tourism for Tomorrow, a graduate hospitality and tourism organization. Tamar MarinoL’Academie de CuisineTamar Romero Marino grew up in a small town in Northern New Jersey and always imagined herself eventually working at a magazine or in fashion. While in college, she met a friend whose passion was cooking and agriculture. Tamar's friend recommended that she read Michael Pollan's The Omnivore's Dilemma, a book that changed the way she thought about food. Tamar started paying attention to what she ate and how food is raised or harvested. Since graduating from college about four years ago she volunteered on organic farms in Catalonia, worked in a restaurant and wrote a food blog, “Basque Fed,” while living in San Sebastian, Spain, and interned at the food magazine, Saveur, in New York City. This past year Tamar made the decision to go L'Academie de Cuisine for a certificate in the pastry arts. Now she is working full-time as the pastry assistant to Chef Douglas Hernandez at Bibiana Osteria-Enoteca in Washington, DC.

My NEWH Resolution…

-  Corinne Ritsick, Strategic Planning Chair

1. Hoteliers will invest in reinvigorating properties to take advantage of the market.

2. There will be little to no new development dollars on the debt or equity Side.

3. Online booking will continue to (modestly) grow.

4. There will be more mobile bookings and research.

5. Demand and average rate are up in most markets, but not equally distributed.

6. Revenue management will make the art of managing a hotel more of a science.

7. Proliferation of distribution channel management will largely impact pricing.

8. Brands will put more money into deals to expand market share.

9. Prepare for growth.

10. Social media will continue to transform connections with travelers.

My NEWH Resolution…

-  Carl Ranno, Past President/ Parliamentarian/ Ways & Means

It’s one month into the new year…how many messages are in your email inbox right now? A few dozen? It’s probably more like a few hundred, or even a few thousand. We all get too much email. Getting through all those messages every day isn't easy. So here are some tips to help you keep your inbox healthy:

There are only three kinds of email messages: stuff you need to do, stuff you're waiting on, and stuff you might want to refer to later. Make three folders in your email program: To-do, Reference, and Wait. When you read an email, if it just needs a quick response, reply on the spot. If it's trash, delete it. Everything else will go into one of your three folders.

Do yourself a favor: Select all the email in your inbox that's more than three days old, and move it into a Backlog folder.

Process whatever's left using your new three-folder system. When you have time you can work your way through the old message backlog--but don't worry, there will always be new email to deal with.

Check your email only a few times day.

Email is asynchronous--senders do not expect an immediate response. Take advantage of this by turning off your visual and audio alerts, and checking it just a few times a day.

The mission of the Washington DC Metro Chapter is to bring hospitality professionals and students together to promote excellence and leadership in the industry through education, mentoring, promotion and awareness of sustainable design and building, networking opportunities and the awarding of scholarships.
