Established by the British Parliament and named for U.S. General George C. Marshall in appreciation of the U.S. participation in post-WWII recovery, this scholarship is comparable to the Rhodes Scholarship and is designed to allow outstanding American students to study in Britain.

Templeton Scholars
The Templeton Scholars Program, named for Ohio University’s first African American graduate, John Newton Templeton, was created to mirror the Cutler Scholars Program while attracting high-achieving students from disproportionately represented groups. The scholarship covers the cost of tuition, room, board, and books for the academic year. Recipients must successfully complete 48 credit hours per academic year at Ohio University and achieve and maintain a cumulative 3.00 g.p.a. by the end of each spring quarter.

This program is part of the National Security Language Initiative (NSLI), a U.S. government-interagency effort to expand dramatically the number of Americans studying and mastering critical need foreign languages. Undergraduate, master’s, and Ph.D. students and recent graduates receive funding to participate in beginning, intermediate, and advanced level summer language programs at American Overseas Research Centers and affiliated partners. Scholarship recipients must be U.S. citizens.

A committee of distinguished professors reviews nominations made by faculty to select each year’s recipient. The Distinguished Professor Award, a lifetime designation, is considered the University’s highest academic honor.

The Office of Regional Higher Education has established this award to recognize the accomplishments of faculty who have demonstrated excellence in teaching; quality scholarship in their discipline, or in areas of teaching, learning, or engagement; outstanding work with students and student organizations; leadership in civic and community activities directly germane to the educational mission of Ohio University and southeastern Ohio; and leadership in professional organizations. Each campus may nominate one candidate per year for selection by a regional campus faculty committee. Up to two Outstanding Professors are named each year.
