PROTOTYPE HISTORY: SincethebeginningofrailroadingintheUnitedStates,tankcarshavebeenanessentialpartofthefreightcarfleet.Fromtheirprimitivebeginningsasbarrelsmountedtoflatcars,tankcarshaveevolvedintocomplexdesignsoptimizedforhaulingavarietyofliquids,fromcornsyruptoanhydrousammonia.

Whiletankcarsareprolific,mostrailroadsdonotownlargefleetsoftheserelativelyspecializedcars,preferringtomakeuseoffleetsmanagedbyfreightcarcompanies,suchasGATX.Oneofthelargerequipmentmanagementcompanies,GATXcantraceitshistorytotheturnofthecentury,andiswell-knownforitslargefleetoftankcarsofvaryingdesigns,manyofwhichwerebuiltin-house.OneofthemoredistinctivedesignstooriginatefromGATXisthe“TankTrain”,whichmadeitsdebutinthe1970s.TheTankTrainconceptwasasolutiontotheproblemoflongload/unloadtimesforunittrainshipmentsofparticularcommodities,suchascrudeoil.Atypicalunittraincantakesignificanttimetoloadorunload,withtheneedforworkerstoattachthenecessaryhosesandotherfittingstoeachindividualcar,coupledwiththenecessarytimetoloadorunloadthecommodityfromeachcar.TheTankTrainwasdesignedtosignificantlyreducethistime.TankTraincarsareinterconnectedwithalarge-diameter,flexiblehosebetweeneachcar,whichallowsthecommoditytobesiphonedoffatasinglepointattheendofasetofcarswhilebeing“pushed”attheoppositeendwithinertnitrogengas.Usingthismethod,TankTraincarscanbeloadedorunloadedatarateofapproximately3,000gallonsperminute,allowingatrainof90carstobeloadedorunloadedinunderfivehours.Thishastheobviousbenefitofincreasedequipmentutilization,aswellasreducedlaborcosts,andshorterdwelltimesatterminals.Additionally,TankTraincarswerebuiltinvarioussizesanddesignstohandlevariouscommoditiesresultinginawidevarietyofTankTraincarsroamingthenations’rails.
