Queen Hatshepsut ruled for 20 years and groomed Moses to be her son and
Pharaoh of all Egypt. Thutmose III finally took over and expressed great hatred
and resistance to Moses, who fled from his wrath when Moses was 40 years
old, long after the death of Queen Hatshepsut.

Message No. 3
“GOD HAS A PLAN”
Exodus 3:1-22
Four things involved:
1A. A DEMONSTRATION OF THE AWESOME PRESENCE OF GOD - 1-6
1B. It was UNEXPECTED in terms of what Moses was doing - 1
“kept the flock of Jethro (2:18 - Reuel) NIV/NKJV - “was tending the flock ”
God often teaches those whom He will greatly use by having them take care of
sheep - cf. Psalm 78:70-72
2B. It was UNIQUE in terms of the place to which he led the flock
“the backside of the deser t ” - In Semitic thought, one always faces east when
giving directions. The phrase may be translated “west side ” - the verb “led ” is a participle that indicates a continuing occupation. He was not looking for God
but for pasture.
“Horeb ” - means “waste ” or “wilderness area ” - a general term for the entire
area, while “Sinai ” which means “shining ” perhaps a derivation of the
Babylonian moon god, Sin .
Sinai is probably the traditional site called Jebel M usa (the hill of Moses), one
of three peaks near the southern end of the peninsula, 7500 feet in elevation.
Sinai is used for the mountain as well as the entire wilderness area (Ex. 19:2 )
It is called simply “the mount ” in Exodus 19:2 , “the mount of the Lord ” in
Numbers 10:33 , or “the mountain of God ” as in our text in Exodus 3:1 .

“holy ground ” - cf. Joshua 5:13-15 cf. I saiah 6:1-8

“THIS IS THE FINGER OF GOD”
Exodus 8:1-32
1A. THE DEMAND TO LET THE PEOPLE GO - 1-4
1B. The PURPOSE of this demand
“that they may serve Me ” - v. 1
2B. The PLAGUE that will come if Pharaoh refuses - 2-4
FROG FACTS:
(1) The presence of frogs was not unusual. Egyptian paintings and inscriptions
- many ponds pools - frogs heard regularly - from overflow of the Nile.
(2) The picture of many frogs was not difficult - it represented fruitfulness,
blessing, assurance of a good harvest.
(3) The place of the frog in Egyptian mythology was one of honor - a sacred
symbol worshipped. A frog could not be killed - involuntary slaughter was
punishable by death.
The goddess Heqt was symbolized by a frog head - she was the wife of the
god Khnum - the symbol of resurrection and fertility - they believed she
assisted women in childbirth - she was one of eight primeval gods - four
frog-headed gods, and four serpent-headed gods - water, infinity, darkness,
and the occultic.
2A. THE DUPLICATION OF THE FROG ATTACK - 5-7
“covered the land of Egypt ”
“the magicians did so with their enchantments ”
NASB/NIV – “secret ar ts ”
Harry Rimmer in his book, DEAD MEN TELL TALES, wrote on page 105:
“ Like a blanket of filth, the slimy, wet monstrosities covered the land, until men
sickened at the continued squashing crunch of the ghastly pavment they were
forced to walk upon. If a man’s feet slipped on the greasy mass of their crushed
bodies, he fell into an indescribably offensive mass of putrid uncleanness, and
when he sought water to cleanse himself the water was so solid with frogs, he got
no cleansing there.”

“THIS IS THE FINGER OF GOD”
Message No. 9 - Exodus 8:32
21
Louis Untermeyer in his book, MOSES , wrote on page 184:
“Small green peepers, no larger than locusts, distended toads, the color of
excrement, mottled frogs like bloated vegetation, frogs that were lumps of bronze,
frogs with eyes of unblinking demons, frogs subtler than salamanders, frogsmotionless, frogs that leaped into the laps of screaming children, wart-breeding
frogs, frogs like droppings of mud, frogs trailing their slime after them, flying
frogs that built nests in high reeds, frogs that died and bred death. Once again the
sacred Nile was the source of pollution!”
Whatever popularity the frog enjoyed in the past, now it was greatly diminishing
and horrifying to the people! Why would the gods do this to them?
3A. THE DELIVERANCE WHICH ONLY THE LORD GOD COULD BRING - 8-15
1B. The INABILITY of the magicians to remove the frogs - 8
(Pharaoh did not call for them to do so, but for Moses and Aaron)
2B. The IMPROVEMENT in Pharaoh’s theological understanding – 8
“Entreat the Lord ” cf. Exodus 5:2
3B. The IMPORTANCE of setting the time - 9
“Glory over me: when shall I entreat for thee ”
NASB - “The honor is yours to tel l me ”
NKJV - “Accept the honor of saying when I shall in tercede for you ”
NIV - “I leave to you the honor of setting the time for me to pray for you ”
Pharaoh would be forced to acknowledge the miraculous nature of removing
the frogs.
4B. The INTENT behind this decision of Moses - 10
“that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the Lord our God
”
5B. The “ IMPACT of this plague - 13-14
“the land stank ” - LB - “ terrible stench ” NASB - “became foul ”
6B. The INDIFFERENCE of Pharaoh - 15
the moment he saw relief from the plague, he hardened his heart
“as the Lord had said ”

that is quite small but has an irritating and painful sting.
The translation, lice , follows the opinion of Josephus and Talmudic writers, but
has no foundation in the Hebrew text.
3B. The MOTIVE behind this plague as it relates to Egyptian religion
It possibly was designed to humiliate the Egyptian priests, who were known for
their physical purity - no blemishes, scabs, or scars.
They taught the people that they were the only ones who could pray to the gods
because they were physically clean.
4B. The MAGICIANS were unable to duplicate this miracle - 18
cf. 1 John 4:4

“GOD SHOWS HIS POWER!”
Exodus 9:1-35
1A. BY STRIKING ALL THE CATTLE OF EGYPT - 1-7
1B. The DESCRIPTION by which the Lord would be known – 1
“Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews ”
2B. The DISASTER that would come upon Egypt – 3
“a very grievous murr ain ” Hebrew word, deber - idea of pestilence – fatal.
Upon domestic animals - “horses, asses, camels, oxen, and sheep”. These
animals were sacred symbols to the Egyptians and were pictured as gods in
their mythological paintings and inscriptions.
Notes: A necropolis of sacred bulls was discovered near Memphis. The Apis bull was considered the sacred animal of the god Ptah. At any one time, there
was only one sacred Apis bull - when it died, it was buried in the tombs of the
bulls - the replacement was chosen by 28 standards that identified him as deity
and became the object of worship.
On Nov. 13, 1856, this burial place of the bulls was discovered. The total
length of its tunnels reached 1,120 feet. 64 burial chambers were discovered,
with huge red or black granite sarcophagi, 12 feet long, 9 feet high, and 6 feet
wide, weighing 60 tons.
Another deity was Hathor, the goddess of love, beauty, and joy, represented by
the cow. The center of this worship was the city of Denderah, though its
popularity reached all over Egypt.
It was often pictured with the king sucking it for divine nourishment. In upper
Egypt, the goddess appears as a woman with the head of a cow. In another
town, Hathor was a woman whose head was adored with two horns of a cow
with a sun disc between them.
Another deity was Mnevis, a sacred bull, worshipped at Heliopolis and
associated with the god Re. The disaster would fall only upon the animals that
were in the field at the time - the open air - Animals protected by shelters
would not have been effected - cf. v. 19 .
It would have been an economic disaster, and would be especially hard on
Pharaoh himself, due to his large supply of cattle - cf. Genesis 47:6, 17 .

“ashes of the furnace ” - the place where bricks were made.
2B. The main CHARACTERISTIC of this plague
“i t became a boil breaking forth wi th blains upon man, and upon beast ”
(blisters - open and running sores)
Notes: the lion-headed goddess, Sekhmet, was supposed to have power to
create epidemics and bring them to an end. Various amulets and other objects
were worn by the Egyptians to ward off evil.
The Egyptian god of healing was Serapis, and the god of medicine, Imhotep,
also known as the guardian of all healing sciences - their inability must have
led to deep despair and frustration.

It is celebrated in the Diaspora by Orthodox and Conservative Jews for eight days, and by

Work is prohibited on the first two and the last two days; in Israel, work is forbidden on
the first and last days only.

Rephidim. Numbers 33:12-14 mentions two other locations where they
encamped before they came to Rephidim - Dophkah & Alush. Rephidim is
thought to be the present-day Wadi Refayld near Jebel Musa, the supposed site
of Mt. Sinai.

and knew along what was going to happen - so it is with our lives as well.
Some of the places to which God brings us in our journey are difficult.

provision of the Lord for their needs.

3B. The PEOPLE who would make the garments for the priests - 2
“all that are wise hearted, whom I have fi ll ed with the spir it of wisdom ”
NIV - “ski l led men “ NKJV - “gifted artisans ”
NASB - “ski ll ful persons ”
cf. Exodus 31:1-3, 6, 10; 35:30-31, 35; 36:1-2
Prov. 2:6 - “For the LORD giveth wisdom; out of his mouth cometh
knowledge and understanding ”

“for glory and for beauty “ NIV - “dignity and honor ”

3D. Its stones - 17-21
v. 21 - “with the names of the children of I srael ”
1E. The English names of these stones are often transliterations of
either Hebrew or Greek words.
2E. Only two English words come directly from the Hebrew words
“sapphire ” and “ jasper ”.
3E. The English words that are based on Greek (LXX) “sardius ”
and “topaz ” in the first row “amethyst ” in the third row “beryl ”
and “onyx ” in the fourth row.
4E. Interestingly, the foundation stones of the New Jerusalem (Rev
21:19-20 ) include nine of the stones on the high priest's
breastplate, if you are comparing the Greek O.T. with the N.T.
5E. The first stone would have “Reuben” on it; and the last stone
would have “Benjamin ” on it. “Reuben ” means “Behold, a
Son !” and “Benjamin” means “ the Son of my Right Hand ” - cf
Jesus Christ.
4D. Its standard for making decisions - 30
“put in the breastplate of judgment the URIM and THUMM IM ; and they shal l be upon Aaron' s heart.. and Aaron shall bear the
judgment of the chi ldren of I srael upon his heart before the LORD
continually.”
cf. Num. 27:18-23; Deut. 33:8-11; Ezra 2:61-63; Neh. 7:63-65
“URIM” - possible from the root 'arar meaning “to curse ” and
THUMMIM perhaps from the root tamam meaning “to be per fect ” -
one is a negative answer, and the other is a positive answer.
More likely that the word “URIM” is from the word for “light ” -
“lights ” and “perfection ” Hebrew words are found on the seal of
Yale University!
Cf. Prov. 16:33; I Samuel 28:6

2C. To provide a Rest for the people - 15a
cf. Mark 2:27 - cf. Hebrews 4:1-11
3C. To leave a Reminder of what God did on the seventh day -17
cf. Genesis 2:1-3 - “on the seventh day ” - preposition often means “priorto ” or “by ” - He simply discontinued or finished His work of creation, but
He continues His work of providential care and control and of
redemption. cf. John 5:8-18
4C. To encourage a Realization that the LORD is the One Who sanctifies

2B. The PROHIBITION of this covenant - 15
no “work

- what is to be done on the SabbathNumbers 28:9-10 – sacrifices. – cf. Deut. 5:13-14
special “burnt offeri ng ” every Sabbath - two lambs in first year without

“shal l sur ely be put to death ”
4B. The PRACTICE of this covenant – 16-18“perpetual ” vv. 13-14 - “ye shal l keep ”
Consider Colossians 2:16-17 - “a shadow of th ings to come ” - the attempt to
equate the old covenant to the new covenant, circumcision with baptism,
Passover with communion, priest with pastor, temple with church, tithing with
giving, Sabbath with Sunday, etc., is inappropriate teaching, close to heresy,
but at best, a faulty interpretation of the distinctives of Israel and the Church -
they are not one and the same.
