“THE AFFLICTION OF GOD'S PEOPLE”

Exodus 1:1-22

The word “exodus ” - Greek word = “the way out ”

The Hebrew title of the book is taken from the opening line:

“Now  these are the names of ” we-elleh shmot or the shortened form - sh,mot

Moses is declared by the N.T. to be the author of the book by the passages in:

Mark 7:10 with Ex. 20:12; 21:17; M ark 12:24 with Ex. 3:6;

Luke 2:21-24 with Ex. 13:2; Hebrews 11:23-29 .

Key commentary - Hosea 11:1 cf. Matt. 2:13-15

The Hyksos rulers arose against Egypt.

The Amorites (Gen. 15:16 ) were a part of the Hyksos empire, and perhaps had

reason to hate the Israelites.

“GOD CHOOSES A MAN”

Exodus 2:1-25

Consider the following factors:

1A. THE PROTECTION OF GOD - 1-10

Cf. Psalm 18:17-19, 36, 50; 34:6-8, 17-19

The devil will try to destroy the man God chooses, but God will protect and sustain

him in the midst of affliction and trials.

Notice the following evidences of God’s protection:

1B. The COURAGE of his parents - 1-4

God’s sovereign plan being worked out - even the circumstances behind the

daughter of Pharaoh - Queen Hatshepsut.

NOTE: Queen Hatshepsut was the daughter of Thutmose I, a great warrior and

builder. She married her half-brother, Thutmose II, who died after a short

reign. Thutmose III was the son of her husband by a harem wife.

Queen Hatshepsut ruled for 20 years and groomed Moses to be her son and

Pharaoh of all Egypt. Thutmose III finally took over and expressed great hatred

and resistance to Moses, who fled from his wrath when Moses was 40 years

old, long after the death of Queen Hatshepsut.

3B. The COMPASSION of Pharaoh’s daughter - 6

She knew what her father had commanded, and knew that this was a Hebrew

child - v. 4 no doubt saw his circumcision  NIV - “felt sorry for him ”

NASB – “had pity on ”

4B. The CALLING for a nurse - 7-8

His sister, Miriam, offered to get a nurse, and gets his own mother.

How marvelous is God’s sovereign plan!

5B. The CARE of Moses - 9-10 cf. Acts 7:18-21

 Message No. 3

“GOD HAS A PLAN”

Exodus 3:1-22

Four things involved:

1A. A DEMONSTRATION OF THE AWESOME PRESENCE OF GOD - 1-6

1B. It was UNEXPECTED in terms of what Moses was doing - 1

“kept the flock of Jethro (2:18 - Reuel) NIV/NKJV - “was  tending the flock ”

God often teaches those whom He will greatly use by having them take care of

sheep - cf. Psalm 78:70-72

2B. It was UNIQUE in terms of the place to which he led the flock

“the backside of the deser t ” - In Semitic thought, one always faces east when

giving directions. The phrase may be translated “west side ” - the verb “led ” is a participle that indicates a continuing occupation. He was not looking for God

 but for pasture.

“Horeb ” - means “waste ” or  “wilderness area ” - a general term for the entire

area, while “Sinai ” which means “shining ”  perhaps a derivation of the

Babylonian moon god, Sin .

Sinai is probably the traditional site called Jebel M usa (the hill of Moses), one

of three peaks near the southern end of the peninsula, 7500 feet in elevation.

Sinai is used for the mountain as well as the entire wilderness area (Ex. 19:2 )

It is called simply “the mount ” in Exodus 19:2 , “the mount of the Lord ” in

Numbers 10:33 , or  “the mountain of God ” as in our text in Exodus 3:1 .

3B. It was UNUSUAL in the circumstances that occurred - 2-6

Cf. Acts 7:29-36

1C. The Revelation of the angel of the Lord - 2a

Cf. Gen. 12:7; 16:7-13; 17:1; 18:1; 22:15-18; I sa. 63:7-9; Malachi 3:1 Cf. Psalm 34:7

2C. The Refusal of the bush to be consumed – 2b-3

Cf. Gen. 15:17; Exodus 19:18; Daniel 3:26-27; Hebrews 12:29

3C. The Remark about the sacredness of that place - 4-5

“holy ground ” - cf. Joshua 5:13-15 cf. I saiah 6:1-8

Cf. 1 Samuel 12:6-8; Psalm 77:20; 105:26; I saiah 63:11-13; Hosea 12:13;

M icah 6:4

3B. The CONCERN of Moses - 11-12

1C. His Anxiety was based on his own significance & ability - 11

the question is not “Who am I ”, but “Who is God ”.

2C. God’s Assurance was based on His presence - 12

“Certain ly I wil l be with thee ”

He would give a “token ” or  a “sign ”

 Message No. 9

“THIS IS THE FINGER OF GOD”

Exodus 8:1-32

1A. THE DEMAND TO LET THE PEOPLE GO - 1-4

1B. The PURPOSE of this demand

“that  they may serve Me ” - v. 1

2B. The PLAGUE that will come if Pharaoh refuses - 2-4

FROG FACTS:

(1) The presence of frogs was not unusual. Egyptian paintings and inscriptions

- many ponds pools - frogs heard regularly - from overflow of the Nile.

(2) The picture of many frogs was not difficult - it represented fruitfulness,

blessing, assurance of a good harvest.

(3) The place of the frog in Egyptian mythology was one of honor - a sacred

symbol worshipped. A frog could not be killed - involuntary slaughter was

 punishable by death.

The goddess Heqt was symbolized by a frog head - she was the wife of the

god Khnum - the symbol of resurrection and fertility - they believed she

assisted women in childbirth - she was one of eight primeval gods - four

frog-headed gods, and four serpent-headed gods - water, infinity, darkness,

and the occultic.

2A. THE DUPLICATION OF THE FROG ATTACK - 5-7

“covered the land of Egypt ”

“the magicians did so with their enchantments ”

NASB/NIV – “secret ar ts ”

Harry Rimmer in his book, DEAD MEN TELL TALES, wrote on page 105:

“ Like a blanket of filth, the slimy, wet monstrosities covered the land, until men

sickened at the continued squashing crunch of the ghastly pavment they were

forced to walk upon. If a man’s feet slipped on the greasy mass of their crushed

bodies, he fell into an indescribably offensive mass of putrid uncleanness, and

when he sought water to cleanse himself the water was so solid with frogs, he got

no cleansing there.”

“THIS IS THE FINGER OF GOD”

 Message No. 9 - Exodus 8:32

21

Louis Untermeyer in his book, MOSES  , wrote on page 184:

“Small green peepers, no larger than locusts, distended toads, the color of

excrement, mottled frogs like bloated vegetation, frogs that were lumps of bronze,

frogs with eyes of unblinking demons, frogs subtler than salamanders, frogsmotionless, frogs that leaped into the laps of screaming children, wart-breeding

frogs, frogs like droppings of mud, frogs trailing their slime after them, flying

frogs that built nests in high reeds, frogs that died and bred death. Once again the

sacred Nile was the source of pollution!”

Whatever popularity the frog enjoyed in the past, now it was greatly diminishing

and horrifying to the people! Why would the gods do this to them?

3A. THE DELIVERANCE WHICH ONLY THE LORD GOD COULD BRING - 8-15

1B. The INABILITY of the magicians to remove the frogs - 8

(Pharaoh did not call for them to do so, but for Moses and Aaron)

2B. The IMPROVEMENT in Pharaoh’s theological understanding – 8

“Entreat  the Lord ” cf. Exodus 5:2

3B. The IMPORTANCE of setting the time - 9

“Glory over me: when shall I entreat for thee ”

NASB - “The  honor is yours to tel l me ”

NKJV - “Accept  the honor of saying when I shall in tercede for you ”

NIV - “I leave to you the honor of setting the time for me to pray for you ”

Pharaoh would be forced to acknowledge the miraculous nature of removing

the frogs.

4B. The INTENT behind this decision of Moses - 10

“that thou mayest know that there is none like unto the Lord our God

5B. The “ IMPACT of this plague - 13-14

“the land stank ” - LB - “ terrible  stench ”  NASB - “became  foul ”

6B. The INDIFFERENCE of Pharaoh - 15

the moment he saw relief from the plague, he hardened his heart

“as  the Lord had said ”

1B. The MIRACLE came this time without warning - 16-17

2B. The MANNER  in which it affected the land“all the dust of the land became lice thr oughout the land of Egypt ”

Lice - Hebrew word, kinnim , refers to gnats or possibly mosquitoes. An insect

that is quite small but has an irritating and painful sting.

The translation, lice , follows the opinion of Josephus and Talmudic writers, but

has no foundation in the Hebrew text.

3B. The MOTIVE  behind this plague as it relates to Egyptian religion

It possibly was designed to humiliate the Egyptian priests, who were known for

their physical purity - no blemishes, scabs, or scars.

They taught the people that they were the only ones who could pray to the gods

 because they were physically clean.

4B. The MAGICIANS were unable to duplicate this miracle - 18

cf. 1 John 4:4

5B. The MESSAGE was clear - 19

“This is the finger of God ” 2 Tim. 3:8

5C. Refers to casting out demons - Luke 11:20

6C. Refers to Jesus writing on the ground - John 8:6, 8

1B. The SWARMS God sent - 20-21

‘ “swarms of f l ies ”- NASB - “ insects ”Hebrew – ‘arob, used 9 times, always referring to this plague.

Cf. Psa. 78:45; 105:31 - LXX uses the word kunomuia - referring to

“dog-flies ” - an insect that is blood-sucking.

In Egypt, the Ichneuman fly which deposits its eggs on other living things

where its larvae can feed, was regarded as the manifestation of the god.

2B. The SEPARATION God made - 22-23

“division

”- NKJV - “difference

3B. Pharaoh ARGUED that he would allow it, if they did not go far away - 28

4B. Moses AGREED to entreat the Lord, but warned Pharaoh about beingdeceitful - 29

5B. Moses APPEALED to the Lord to remove the swarms - 30-31

 Message No. 10

“GOD SHOWS HIS POWER!”

Exodus 9:1-35

1A. BY STRIKING ALL THE CATTLE OF EGYPT - 1-7

1B. The DESCRIPTION by which the Lord would be known – 1

“Thus saith the Lord God of the Hebrews ”

2B. The DISASTER that would come upon Egypt – 3

“a very grievous murr ain ” Hebrew word, deber - idea of pestilence – fatal.

Upon domestic animals - “horses, asses, camels, oxen, and sheep”. These

animals were sacred symbols to the Egyptians and were pictured as gods in

their mythological paintings and inscriptions.

Notes: A necropolis of sacred bulls was discovered near Memphis. The Apis bull was considered the sacred animal of the god Ptah. At any one time, there

was only one sacred Apis bull - when it died, it was buried in the tombs of the

bulls - the replacement was chosen by 28 standards that identified him as deity

and became the object of worship.

On Nov. 13, 1856, this burial place of the bulls was discovered. The total

length of its tunnels reached 1,120 feet. 64 burial chambers were discovered,

with huge red or black granite sarcophagi, 12 feet long, 9 feet high, and 6 feet

wide, weighing 60 tons.

Another deity was Hathor, the goddess of love, beauty, and joy, represented by

the cow. The center of this worship was the city of Denderah, though its

 popularity reached all over Egypt.

It was often pictured with the king sucking it for divine nourishment. In upper

Egypt, the goddess appears as a woman with the head of a cow. In another

town, Hathor was a woman whose head was adored with two horns of a cow

with a sun disc between them.

Another deity was Mnevis, a sacred bull, worshipped at Heliopolis and

associated with the god Re. The disaster would fall only upon the animals that

were in the field at the time - the open air - Animals protected by shelters

would not have been effected - cf. v. 19 .

It would have been an economic disaster, and would be especially hard on

Pharaoh himself, due to his large supply of cattle - cf. Genesis 47:6, 17 .

2B. The main CHARACTERISTIC of this plague

“i t  became a boil breaking forth wi th blains upon man, and upon beast ”

(blisters - open and running sores)

Notes: the lion-headed goddess, Sekhmet, was supposed to have power to

create epidemics and bring them to an end. Various amulets and other objects

were worn by the Egyptians to ward off evil.

The Egyptian god of healing was Serapis, and the god of medicine, Imhotep,

also known as the guardian of all healing sciences - their inability must have

led to deep despair and frustration.

3B. The CONSEQUENCE upon the magicians - 11

Cf. 2 Timothy 3:8

4B. The RESULTS seriously affected the economic life and survival of the

Egyptians - 31-32

Occurred in late January or early February - barley was an essential in the

Egyptian diet, and flax was crucial to their clothes - they did not like woolen

materials worn by others.

5B. The RESPONSE of Pharaoh emphasizes again the depravity of the human

heart - 34-35

“he sinned yet more, and hardened his heart ” Heb. 3:7,12; 4:7

encamped before they came to Rephidim - Dophkah & Alush. Rephidim is

thought to be the present-day Wadi Refayld near Jebel Musa, the supposed site

of Mt. Sinai.

and knew along what was going to happen - so it is with our lives as well.

Some of the places to which God brings us in our journey are difficult.

COMMANDMENTS - 1-11

1B. Our  UNDERSTANDING of God

“I  am the LORD thy God ” and “Thou  shaf t have no other gods before me ”

I sa. 43:10-11; 44:6, 8; 45:5-6. 18:21-22

2B. The UNDERMINING of God’s glory

“Thou  shal l not make unto thee any graven image, or any l ikeness of

anything ... Thou shaft not bow down thyself to them, nor serve them

Cf. I sa. 40:25; 42:8; 46:5-11

Two important considerations:

1C. The Jealousy of God

“for  I , the LORD thy God, am a jealous God ”

2C. The Judgment of God

“visiting  the in iqui ty of the fathers upon the chi ldr en unto the thi rd and

four th generation of them that hate me...”

3B. The USAGE of God’s Name

“Thou  shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain ; f or the LORD

wil l not hold him gui ltless that taketh H is name in vain.” - cf. James 5:12

4B. The UNIQUENESS of the Sabbath day

“Remember  the sabbath day to keep it holy ” - vv. 8-11 cf. Exodus 31:12-18

Deut. 5:12 - “Keep  the Sabbath day to sancti fy it ”

“Remember ” - means to think or to meditate - six days to work; one day to

think! We are to worship, not work!

It is for our benefit - Mark 2:23-28 - cf. Matt. 12:1-8 “the Sabbath was made

for man ” - Matt. 12:8 - “For  the Son of Man is Lord even of the Sabbath ”.

“FURNITURE OF THE TABERNACLE”

Exodus 25:1-40

1A. THE COMMENCEMENT OF THE PROJECT - 1-9

1B. The MOTIVATION the people should have - 1-2

“giveth it wi ll ingly with his heart ” - 2 Cor . 8:4-5; 9:7

Exodus 35:5, 21-29; 36:4-7 NIV - “whose  heart prompts him to give ”

 NASB - “whose  heart moves him ” cf. Deut. 16:16-17;

1 Chron. 29:3 - “offering ” - NASB - raise  a contri bution

Henry Soltau writes in his wonderful book on THE TABERNACLE these

words concerning their willingness to give: (born in 1805 a.d. and died in 1875

a.d. - he was best known for his prophetic messages delivered all over Englandand Scotland - his teaching was known for its clearness and depth, and for its

close adherence to the Scriptures)

What a truth this tells us, respecting the way in which we shoul d seek to

please God! A servile spir it i l l befi ts one who has tasted of H is grace. A

covetous heart is especial ly an abomination to Him who has not spared His

own Son. Let us only contemplate more deeply, more trul y, the vastness of

H is gift to us. Let us learn a l ittl e more and more of the heart of God as

shewn in H is wondrous love in the gif t of Chr ist, and we shall acquir e a

more pr incely character - more tr ite nobili ty of spir it, and we shal l be more

ready to yield ourselves, all we are, and all we have, a wil li ng offer ing in H is

service. (Page 171)

2B. The MATERIALS to be used - 3-7

v. 3 - “brass ” -  NKJV/NIV/NASB - “bronze ” (Hebrew - “copper ”) The word

refers to an alloy of copper and tin, not the later material known as “brass ” - an

alloy of copper and zinc. - cf. Ex. 3:22; 12:35-36

v. 4 - “scarlet ”  NKJV - “scarlet  thread ”  NIV - “scarlet yarn ” NASB – “scarlet mater ial ”

Hebrew tahash - marine animal - can refer to seals, dolphins, sharks, dogfish

and sea cows, a herbivorous animal that grows to about 10-12 feet long, has a

round head and a divided tail, found among the coral rocks of the Red Sea.

“ephod ” - used 49 times, 31 in Exodus - perhaps a simple linen garment, apron,

worn over the priest's robe and under his breastplate

3B. The MOTIVE behind it all - 8-9

“make me a sanctuary; that I may dwell among them ”

“sanctuary ” - Hebrew miqdash - from root gadash meaning

“that which is holy or separate”

The Hebrew word mishkan - used in Ex. 25:9 , translated “tabernacle ” from

root shakan meaning “to dwell ” cf. John 1:14 - “tabernacled ”.

The word “tent ” (Ex. 26:36 ) is the Hebrew word ' ohel - refers to a temporary

or collapsible dwelling. The term “the tent of meeting ” (referred to in KJV as

“the tabernacle of the congregation ”) is the Hebrew ' ohel mo’ed - Ex. 29:42.

In Ex. 38:21 it mentions “the tabernacle of testimony ” - the mishkan he’ edut .

 NIV - “ski l led men “  NKJV - “gifted  artisans ”

NASB - “ski ll ful persons ”

cf. Exodus 31:1-3, 6, 10; 35:30-31, 35; 36:1-2

Prov. 2:6 - “For  the LORD giveth wisdom; out of his mouth cometh

knowledge and understanding ”

4B. The PROMINENCE which these garments would give to the priests - 2, 40

“for  glory and for beauty “  NIV - “dignity  and honor ”

Psalm 132:9 “Let  thy pr iests be clothed with r ighteousness ”

Psalm 132:16 - “I wil l also clothe her priests with salvation ”

5B. The PIECES which were to be made for the priests - 4

“a breastplate, and an ephod, and a robe, and a broidered coat, a mitre, and

79

3D. Its stones - 17-21

v. 21 - “with the names of the children of I srael ”

1E. The English names of these stones are often transliterations of

either Hebrew or Greek words.

2E. Only two English words come directly from the Hebrew words

“sapphire ” and “ jasper ”.

3E. The English words that are based on Greek (LXX) “sardius ”

and “topaz ” in the first row “amethyst ” in the third row “beryl ”

and “onyx ” in the fourth row.

4E. Interestingly, the foundation stones of the New Jerusalem (Rev

21:19-20 ) include nine of the stones on the high priest's

breastplate, if you are comparing the Greek O.T. with the N.T.

5E. The first stone would have “Reuben” on it; and the last stone

would have “Benjamin ” on it. “Reuben ” means “Behold, a

Son !” and “Benjamin” means “ the Son of my Right Hand ” - cf

Jesus Christ.

4D. Its standard for making decisions - 30

“put in the breastplate of judgment the URIM and THUMM IM ; and they shal l be upon Aaron' s heart.. and Aaron shall bear the

judgment of the chi ldren of I srael upon his heart before the LORD

continually.”

 cf. Num. 27:18-23; Deut. 33:8-11; Ezra 2:61-63; Neh. 7:63-65

“URIM” - possible from the root 'arar meaning “to curse ” and

THUMMIM perhaps from the root tamam meaning “to be per fect ” -

one is a negative answer, and the other is a positive answer.

More likely that the word “URIM” is from the word for “light ” -

“lights ” and “perfection ” Hebrew words are found on the seal of

Yale University!

Cf. Prov. 16:33;  I Samuel 28:6

3C. The Robe - 31-35

4C. The Mitre (turban) - 36-38

5C. The Coat and girdle - 39“girdle ” - or “sash ” - cf. I saiah 11:5 - “And  r ighteousness be the girdle of

his loins, and faithfu lness the girdle of his reins ”

The object of the girdle was to strengthen the loins for service.

John 13:4 - “r iseth f rom  supper , and laid aside his garments, and look a

towel and girded himself ”

6C. The Clothing of his sons – 40-43

7B. The PREREQUISITE of anointing these special garments - 41

The word “priest ” is used 497 times in the Bible, of which 70 times are in the

equate the old covenant to the new covenant, circumcision with baptism,

Passover with communion, priest with pastor, temple with church, tithing with

but at best, a faulty interpretation of the distinctives of Israel and the Church -

they are not one and the same.
