The sun was shining on Wednesday 13th, as the first ever sports day took place at the newly titled, Hodgson Academy; with over 650 participants taking part, it was a busy yet eventful day. Every form was given a country, and a few people were selected to walk round with the flags as flag bearers. At the side, teachers and students cheered on their fellow form members, until the last race of the day, where the teachers took part! Overall the form ‘A’ won with 13 1st place titles, followed by ‘R’ with 8 1st place titles.

In the end, it was a day, which was joyful and eventful; bring on sports day 2012!

SUMMER ATTRACTIONS

“ BORED? NOT ANYMORE!“

The Pleasure Beach has just opened up another side of the park. You may have ridden the Big One, you may have rode Infusion but if you haven’t been lately I bet you haven’t ridden the rides in Nickelodeon Land!

Many people think that the Pleasure Beach is for the older generation but now, Amanda Thompson (the Managing Director) has proved them all completely wrong with the new Nickelodeon Land, which is designed for the younger gen-eration! Amanda did think about the teenagers as well though because there are still rides that will probably make those with a weak stomach feel a little bit sick!

If you have never visited the Pleasure Beach before then now is your time. No matter how old or young you are there are rides for everyone! So if you are a thrill seeker then the Pleasure Beach and Nickelodeon Land is the place for you!

Recently, a fabulous new facility opened its doors on the Cleveleys promenade. The jubilee leisure park welcomed the brand new Subzero ice skating to it’s family which is now at-tracting over a hundred more people to Cleveleys every week-end and providing a brilliant ice rink and ice skating wear shop.

Inside the small-looking building hides a huge ice skating/hockey rink in the centre, a modern reception area where you can hire your skates and a scrumptious café to have a snack!

SUBZERO

Whilst the skaters have a ball on the regularly smoothed ice, the spectators have a relaxing hot drink in the Subzero café where they can chill and watch there friends fall around on the ice.

If you don’t fancy skating, you can watch through the windows in reception whilst sheltering from the hot Cleveleys sun, prices vary depending on when you skate so get down to Cleveleys and take a look inside!

“ GAMING AND READING “

Portal 2 is a surprising game, with lots of puzzles and different levels to achieve in order to advance to the next; it is a first-person puzzle campaign with mind-boggling puzzles to be solved.

The whole story behind Portal 2, which is based on Portal 1, is that you are testing ‘Aperture Science’ as the main character of Chell, while doing, you will utilise the portal gun to your advantage to complete every stage or task.

The portal gun is a gun which doesn’t fire bullets but is able to teleport from one place to another by casting an orange portal and a blue portal against certain walls, the physics behind it is that you can go through objects, walls, or even obstacles. It makes the portal gun more powerful than any other gun combined because of its teleportation energy.

GLaDOS, who is in charge of Aperture Science research facilities, is an artifi-cial-intelligent computer system who guides the player to every level, throughout the game you will notice that in Portal 1, he is very dangerous and has killed many scientists who have tried the tests before.

Awakened is the newest book in the incredibly popular dark romance series, House of night. The series is all about Zoey Redbird, a sixteen-year-old girl who has just become a fledgling Vampyre and is required to attend the House of Night boarding school in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Being the latest book in the series; Awakened follows Zoey’s newest adventures at House of night. This book has been anticipated since the readers finished the previous book, Burned, it was released on 4th Jan 2011.

Yes, this, as sad as it maybe, is it! The end of an epic, mind-boggling wizardry era will come to a stop on Friday 15th July…all secrets will be revealed, all storylines sealed and the nations’ jaw, shut. It's dramatically satisfying, spectacular and terrifically exciting, easily justifying the decision to split the last book into two. The ‘Potter’ movies weren't just an adaptation of a series of books, but a living, evolving collaborative phenomenon between page and screen.

Here is where the Harry Potter series gets its groove back, with a final confrontation between Voldemort (played by Ralph Fiennes) and our young hero and with the sensational revelation of Harry's destiny, which Dumbledore had been keeping secret from him. When stout-hearted young Neville Longbottom, (a scene-stealer from Matthew Lewis), steps forward to denounce the dark lord in the final courtyard scene, the viewers were on the edges of their seats!

The colossal achievement of this series really is something to wonder at. The Harry Potter movies showed us their characters growing older in real time: unlike ‘Bart Simpson’, Daniel Radcliffe's ‘Harry’ was going to grow up like a normal person and never before has any film – or any book – brought home how terrifyingly short home life is. The first movie, Philosopher's Stone, came out in 2001, when JK Rowling was working on the fifth book, Order of the Phoenix, and when no one – perhaps not even the author herself – knew precisely how it was going to end. The movies devel-oped just behind the books, and it's surely impossible to read them without being influenced by the films.

In this final episode, Harry (Radcliffe), Hermione (Emma Watson) and Ron (Rupert Grint) con-tinue their battle to find and destroy the horcruxes that the sinister Voldemort needs so he can stay alive for all eternity: these are objects in which the fragments of souls are trapped and whose vital, spiritual force Voldemort, that hateful parasite, can siphon off for his own ends. Harry and his friends track down these horcruxes, but the last one is a puzzle. As the forces of good assemble at Hogwarts for the final showdown with Voldemort and his hordes, Harry knows only that the most vital horcrux is actually in the castle, very close at hand!

This film looks absolutely outstanding, possibly the best yet, and I for one can’t wait to see it!

FASHION “THIS SUMMER’S TRENDS“

Again, in this issue we have another update on the trends, this time for summer instead of spring.

However one thread that has continued through both seasons is floral prints, especially in bright cheerful colours. Per-fectly reflecting the bright summer weather and flowers. The bright colours are also popular in block, shining jewel tones that contrast but work well together, or in comparison to softer, less loud colours. Continuing on the theme of patterns, that are appearing everywhere, it is not just florals, but others in the browns and bronzes that are popping up too, as well as some subtle animal prints.

Jumpsuits in the current popular patterns with square necks and wide legs have been seen in loads of magazines and shops, a real comfortable and styl-ish piece that can be dressed up or down and will suit lots of people of all heights and sizes. Also for a younger, more girly look, short plays suits in lovely patterns work just as well.

.

Thank you for reading and I hope that you find our guide and ideas useful inspiration for you summer wardrobes. We don’t expect you to buy every-thing new and throw out everything you’ve got, you can adapt things or keep your own style- whatever suits you this summer.

Some new ideas and trends that are fast becoming popular at the mo-ment are adventure style and brown shades. As part of the adventure style there are lots of shirt style dresses with breast pockets and but-tons. Accompanied by small shorts, and suede bags and shoes with fringes. Also, lots of the tops have fringes and are lose and flowing in a free relaxed style, that is cool and light, great for hot sunny weather.

A lot of the outfits that have been seen on the runway and in high street stores are in a 60’s style, with high polo necks, knee high boots and miniskirts. Lots of the fabrics are wool and felt, in bright colours (again). If it is cold enough to need one, coats with sloping shoulders and bracelet sleeves should work a treat this can also be applied to shorter jackets for warmer weather.

Perfectly showing that not all patterns are floral, in a wonderful pop art print.

Bright modern colours in a 60s, 2 in 1 with a modern style.

Our playsuit style, adventure, summer and patterns all in one.

A FOND FAREWELL

Miss Bagshaw is a fun, loving and intelligent teacher at Hodgson academy! We are all very sad to say that after the 6 week holidays she will no longer be here. She is an ICT teacher and has helped many stu-dents to get A* GCSE’s. Good luck to you and the future ahead of you we will all miss you dearly!

Mr Davies will be retiring this year although he will return as a part-time teacher. Mr Davies is an intelligent and very clever maths teacher at Hodgson and will always belong at this school.

To Hodgson’s greatest disappointment, Miss Caton will unfortunately be leaving us at the end of this year. She is a funny, friendly and very kind teacher who helps stu-dents in the best way possible and will be missed by every-one who has had the pleasure of being taught by her.

Miss Sweeney has been a great, fun and innovative person who has taught science at Hodgson- she has also been a great head of year for year 10 who has influenced us all and will be missed and loved by everyone.

Another one of the super staff leaving us soon is Mr Blake, a very important figure in the school who always made our lessons fun while juggling his responsibilities as assistant head. He has done this really well and all of the Hodgson family will miss him and wish him good luck in the future.

We are very sad to be saying goodbye to Miss Turner, who has worked at Hodgson as our textiles teacher. Miss Turner has always been friendly and cool, with a bright funky room full of displays. She has always been ready to help any students who have needed it and been kind and supportive. Good luck Miss Turner in your new job!

“GOODBYE TO... ”
