The term textile is derived from the Latin term taxere which means toweave. Textile is a very important part of our life, be it the clothes wewear or the bed and furnishings that we use in our daily life. The history oftextile industry is very rich and has impacted the world economy in a bigway. It is one of the oldest form of craft and dates back to Neolithic age.Initially twigs, leave and branches were weaved but subsequently other
natural fibres were interlaced to form cloth and fabrics. The wool fromsheep was the first to be spunned into yarn and then weaved into fabric. The first spinning wheel was invented in India. It was hand operated andby the 14th century had spread to Europe. In the year 1785, the firstpower loom was invented in England. The steps involved in making a clothare harvest and cleaning of fibres wool or cotton, spinning of thesefibres into threads or yarns, weaving of thread and yarns into fabric orclothsand finally dyeing and stitching the cloth into dresses. Despite theindustrial revolution and development in spinning and weaving machinesand technology, the handicraft and handloom sector has retained its placemaking unique fabrics and clothes, which are very much in vogue in theglobal market.

Karnataka is the largest producer of silk in the
country. It produces only mulberry silkcontributing about 41.4 per cent of the
country's output. Here mulberry cultivation
occupies about 8,500 hectares of the
agricultural land yielding about 68 lakh kg of
raw silk annually. Bulk of the production comes
from Bangalore, Mysore, Kolar, Mandya,Tumkur and Belgaum districts.
Channapatna and Mysore are the main centres
of silk textiles. The state-owned Channapatna
mill has a capacity of 6,000 spindles. The state
hardly uses 40 per cent of the total yarn
produced and the rest is sent to places like
Varanasi Dharmavaram, Kancheepuram, Arani,
Kumbakonam and Surat.
