THE LAST TIME – HOFSTRA AND ALBANY:September 2, 2004 in Hempstead: Junior quarterbackBobby Seck threw for 424 yards and four touchdowns,and added a fifth touchdown rushing, as the Prideopened the 2004 season with a 45-0 win over Albanybefore 6,245 fans at Shuart Stadium.

Seck threw for 201 yards in the first quarter alone,helping the Pride break out to an early 14-0 lead. Hofstratacked on 24-second quarter points to take acommanding 38-0 lead and cruised to the easy win.Seck finished the game with 26 completions in 38attempts for a 196.88 pass efficiency rating.

Hofstra wasted little time getting started, as it marched80 yards in seven plays on its first possession,culminating in a 3-yard touchdown run from sophomoreTerry Crenshaw with 9:53 left in the first quarter. Afterthe defense held, Seck connected with junior receiverDevale Ellis on a 2-yard touchdown pass with 2:27 left inthe first quarter to stretch the lead to 14-0.

Seck then plunged in for a 1-yard touchdown run on aquarterback sneak on the first play of the second quarterto give the Pride a 21-0 advantage. A 58-yard strike fromSeck to senior receiver Isaac Irby with 12:53 left in thesecond stretched the lead to 28-0, and a 35-yard fieldgoal by Chris Onorato made the score 31-0. Seckfinished off a spectacular first half performance with a38-yard touchdown to red-shirt freshman receiverCharles Sullivan to give the Pride a 38-0 lead atintermission.

Seck connected with Irby on a second touchdown pass,this time from 34 yards, with 2:01 left in the third quarterto close out the scoring. Irby finished with eight catchesfor 168 yards and two touchdowns on the day. Sullivanadded seven catches for 97 yards and Ellis chipped inwith four catches for 91 yards. Crenshaw led the groundattack with 49 yards on 17 carries. The Prideaccumulated 504 yards in offense while holding theGreat Danes to 264. The shutout was Hofstra's firstsince a 68-0 blanking of Delaware State on September5, 1998.

HOFSTRA PRESEASON ALL-AMERICANS: ThreeHofstra players have been named to The SportsNetwork 2005 I-AA Preseason All-America Team. Juniorlinebacker Gian Villante, who suffered a pre-trainingcamp knee injury and is out for the season, was namedto the TSN All-America first team, senior offensive tackleWillie Colon was named to the second team and seniorreceiver Devale Ellis was an honorable mentionselection. Villante was a I-AA All-America first teamselection by The Sports Network and The FootballGazette as a sophomore in 2004 after recording 65 solotackles and 64 assisted stops. His 129 total tacklesranked third in the Atlantic 10. Villante tallied double-digittackles in nine of the 11 games and ranked in the Top 20nationally and fourth in the A-10 with 16.5 tackles forloss. He was a second team All-America selection byThe Associated Press and was a finalist for the BuckBuchanan Award as I-AA Defensive Player of the Year.Colon is entering his final season at Hofstra in 2005 andis one of the Pride’s strong pro prospects. He started all11 games at right tackle in 2004 and was named to theAll-Atlantic 10 second team. Colon also received theHofstra Hard Hat Award as the Offensive Lineman of theYear last season. Ellis had a breakout season in 2004,posting a career-best 74 receptions for 1,067 yards and13 touchdowns, ranking second in the Atlantic 10 and11th in I-AA in receptions. The 74 receptions were alsothe fourth-most catches in Hofstra single season history.His 1,067 yards ranked fourth in the A-10 and 14th in I-AA in 2004. Ellis, who posted four 100-yard receivinggames in 2004, broke the school record with 16receptions for a career-best 225 yards at Massachusettsin the season finale.

ATLANTIC 10 PRESEASON COACHES POLLHofstra is picked third in the Atlantic 10 North Divisionand three Pride players have been named to thepreseason All-Atlantic 10 Team in the 2005 Atlantic 10Preseason Poll of conference coaches and select media.The Pride placed behind Massachusetts and NewHampshire in the North Division, while 2004 nationalchampion James Madison and 2003 I-AA champDelaware are picked one-two in the South Division. In2004 the preseason poll favorites were Villanova in theSouth and Maine in the North. The Wildcats placedfourth and the Black Bears finished fifth in the finalstandings. The Atlantic 10 sent a record four teams –William & Mary, New Hampshire, Delaware and JamesMadison – to the I-AA Championships with JMU, whichwas picked fourth in the A10 South in the preseasonpoll, winning the national title.

WR DEVALE ELLIS: Senior WR Devale Ellis, who ledthe Pride receiving corps in 2004, broke Hofstra's all-time single game reception mark with 16 catches in the2004 season finale at Massachusetts. The 16 receptionstopped the previous record of 15 set by Rusty Hoehn atthe United States Merchant Marine Academy in 1971and tied 20 years later by Wayne Morris at Fordham.From his 16 receptions, Ellis racked up a career-high225 yards against the Minutemen. Ellis' record markedthe second consecutive year that a Pride receiver brokea school mark in the final game of the season. In 2003Marques Colston broke Wayne Chrebet's 1994 schoolmark of 245 receiving yards with 267 yards on sevenreceptions at Liberty. In 2004 Devale Ellis:• Tallied seven 90+ receiving yard games• Recorded 74 catches for 1067 yards and a team-high13 touchdowns after recording 19 catches for 111 yardsand one TD in 2003• Ranks fourth all-time on the Hofstra single seasonreception list. QB ANTON CLARKSON: For the first time in his careerjunior QB Anton Clarkson will enter the new season asthe starting quarterback. Clarkson, who played in all 11games last year including eight starts, has played in 17games during his first two seasons at Hofstra. Last yearClarkson:• Had a career day on November 6, 2004 at Maine,completing 30 of 50 passes for a career-high 408 yardsand three touchdowns in the 31-20 victory in Orono. Forhis efforts he was named the Atlantic 10 OffensivePlayer of the Week for the second straight week.• Was 26th in I-AA in passing efficiency with a 132.34rating. He also ranked 47th in total offense with a 202.0average.

• Completed 22 of 34 passes for 323 yards and a career-best five touchdowns in the 48-17 victory over Richmondon October 30, 2004• Was almost perfect against Stony Brook on October 9,completing 20 of 22 passes for 225 yards.• Completed 192 of 324 passes for 2239 yards and 19touchdowns with seven interceptions in 2004.

P JOE NOLAN GETS SIXTH YEAR: Punter Joe Nolanreturns to the Pride football team in 2005. A three-yearstarter at Hofstra after a red-shirt season at Penn StateUniversity, Nolan was awarded a sixth year, per NCAArules and regulations, to utilize for his final season earlierthis summer. He led the Pride in punting in 2001, 2002and 2004. He sat out the 2003 season due to injury.Nolan ranked fourth in the Atlantic 10 in punting as asenior in 2004 averaging 37.9 yards in 59 punts. Hereceived the Hofstra Mayor’s Trophy and was named toAll-Atlantic 10 Academic Team and the CoSIDA/ESPNThe Magazine Academic All-District Team last season.Nolan graduated in May with a bachelor’s degree incommunications and has begun work on a graduatedegree.
