Dear SIS Community,

We suddenly find ourselves already at the mid-point of the semester, wondering “how did it go by so quickly?” yet again. Seems so each semester doesn’t it? Well, after some delays and challenges having new teachers get their proper approvals for both our campus and Sunway Iskandar, we are back to fully staffed and I must first thank all parents and guardians for their patience and understanding of circumstances that are out of our control.

It never ceases to amaze me how every teacher here at SIS steps into the void to fill in a time of need or to volunteer to go above and beyond, and it is always for the good of the students and school. We are truly blessed with a professional and dedicated team of educators that are always wanting to help students achieve and excel and they are a group that I am proud to be associated with.

Speaking of high quality teaching staff, I want to send out a very large thank you to all the teachers who put in many hours of hard work after our March 2018 Ontario Ministry of Education inspection. As a result of the efforts of both SIS and CIMP staff, our April 2019 virtual inspection could not have gone better. Our Ministry inspector was completely satisfied that previous areas have been addressed thoroughly and impressed with the overall quality of the Canadian programme here at SIS. It was a very proud moment for all of us here and is a testament to the quality of education that your children are receiving here at SIS.

We have already had a number of field trips and adventures and it seems like I am signing permission forms and proposals every week. Both teacher-led and student-led activities are providing ample opportunities for cultural, community and curriculum connected experiences. Also, for the first time, we will have middle school students travelling to Macau with Mr. Vidotto and Ms. Picanco to compete in the Canadian Classsic 2019, sports competitions against other Canadian schools from Asia, including our friends from SIS Sunway Iskandar.

Finally, I want to again extend condolences to the family of Jeany Tan Ying Fei. Jeany passed away on the evening of March 22nd, 2019 after battling cancer for a considerable time. Jeany started with SIS several years ago in Grade 7 and the outpouring of emotions and memories from staff and students are testament to the wonderful impression she made upon everyone in SIS. She was always wanting to return to see her friends and SIS family during her illness and will always be remembered fondly by all of here in SIS. Heartfelt thoughts and prayers to all affected by Jeany’s passing and blessings to Jeany for her too brief time with us and her family.

Wishing you all a good year ahead!

Best Wishes,

PrincipalHeath Kondro

SIS’s curriculum and practices are consistently reviewed to ensure that we are following the most updated best practices, meeting all regulations, and addressing the future needs of our students. Our staff consistently follows current trends as set by the Ontario Ministry of Education and in collaboration with administration, creates action plans to incorporate those trends that are most appropriate into the classrooms. The application of educational technology continues to be one of SIS’s strongest points.

Each student is assigned a Google Classroom account that they use throughout the school year. Students are working with Google Apps for Education, TurnItIn, Educreations, Peergrade, and many others. Our teachers have put incredible effort and thought into the use of educational technology over the years and have developed comprehensive eBinders that curate lesson plans, class materials, and resources into a bank of professional knowledge and best practices that is easy to navigate and to use. Our administration continues to provide professional development through the use of curriculum meeting and sharing sessions as well as mentoring sessions for our new teachers to become confident and masterful teachers when using the many Ed-Tech tools we have available in our toolboxes.

SIS’s commitment to applying technology for stronger connections and collaboration between teachers and students continues to grow on our foundation of a decade’s worth of professional knowledge and development.

2019 began in a flurry of excitement and the first quarter of Grades 7 & 8 as well as the mid-term for Grades 9 – 12 has already came and gone. Time moves quickly when there are so many good things happening in regards to academics at SIS!

Here you will find some academic updates that details some past events at SIS.

School Letter AwardsIt is with great pride that we can continue to see School Letter Awards being sought after by our students. By participating and demonstrating excellence in academics, community service, athletics, co-curriculars and the many events held at SIS, our students continue to collect points that demonstrates the values that SIS embodies: Nurturing Minds. Building Character.

This semester we were proud to recognize our winners of the SIS School Letter Award. Congratulations Pranay Prem and Eealyn Lee Yong Jia for earning the letter award and top-tier trophy. Congratulations Goh Li Shi, Yee Rae Lyz and Siti Syireen for earning the letter award and the mid-tier plaque. Finally, congratulations to Tee Yen and Teh Pei Ling for earning the letter award. Please continue to shine and grow with your outstanding contributions!

This award is considered the most prestigious award an SIS student can earn and therefore includes all aspects of student life – including community involvement and extra-curricular participation.

Interim Reports / Letters of CommunicationPersonalized email communications have been sent to the parent(s)/guardian(s) of students who are experiencing learning difficulties in their respective courses. These communications are designed to identify specific barriers to learning, suggest targeted actions for intervention, and overall engage parent(s)/guardian(s) to become partners in supporting improved learning outcomes.

Ontario Secondary Schools Literacy Test On March 28th, 2019 students wrote the Ontario Secondary Schools Literacy Test (OSSLT). After months of planning, preparation, workshops, and targeted literacy instruction, we are confident that our results will exceed a 70% pass rate. Results will be released by the Ontario Education Quality and Accountability Office (EQAO) in June 2019.

Last month, our Second Year IB students travelled to Bali, where they cleaned a beach, learned about Balinese culture, and learned how to cook delicious Balinese food. They are now hard at work finishing the reports on the investigations that they have completed for their Humanities, Science, and Math courses, and they continue to work on their Extended Essays.

Our First Year students recently travelled to an elephant sanctuary to help clean and feed the elephants. They have begun developing ideas to research for their extended essay and develop ideas for their CAS projects.

Many of our graduates from our IB Graduates of 2018 who chose to attend universities in Malaysia have begun classes, and letters of acceptance have begun to arrive for those students that will pursue post-secondary education in Canada, Australia, Europe and the United States.

Current students & parents, especially in Grade 10 who are interested in joining IB in January 2020 should meet with me soon to find out if IB is the right choice. If you have questions about IB, you may also email me at [email protected] directly to get those questions answered.

The Middle School Student Council and the Library Committee teamed up to organised the Harry Potter Week in March.

The objectives of the Harry Potter Week is to:

There were many activities arranged to hype the Week, namely Guess the Number of Jellybeans in the Jar, Hogwarts House Votes, Harry Potter Movie Screening, Harry Potter Theme Day, Daily Harry Potter Trivia, Middle School Quidditch Game, and Food Sale. The library was also elaborately decorated with Harry Potter merchandises, coupled with tantalizing Harry Potter potion drinks display.

On Tuesday and Thursday, the library was transformed into a cozy mini movie theatre, screening Harry Potter movies, complete with a snack stand selling popcorn and drinks.

Harry Potter fever escalated as the week progressed when the Library Committee visited Middle School classes daily with secret envelopes of Harry Potter Trivia which the students responded eagerly.

The week ended with a bang on Friday with magically dressed Harry Potter wannabees participating in the theme day and SIS’s first-ever Quidditch Cup, where fake brooms run amok and pretend flights take place.

A special shout out goes to Team 7 Alpaaca and Team Nutrition Break 2, who battled it out in the final championship match. It was also a great way to end off a week of Harry Potter themed contests and events.

On 27th March - 1st April, 13 of IB Year 2 students and 2 teachers travelled to Bali as part of their Creativity, Activity, and Service (CAS) trip. They cleaned the beach and learned about Balinese culture and food.

On 20th March, all Grade 7 students laced up their hiking boots, filled up their canteens, and set out for a totally different learning experience. Under the canopy and out of the classroom, students enjoyed a peaceful, yet challenging morning of hiking at Bukit Gasing Forest Park, PJ. The trip was organized as a cross-curricular learning opportunity, with students tasked with reflection activities based on the science and physical education curriculum. The students didn’t see any tigers or elephants, however they did run into an unexpected guest while at the first viewpoint.... Mr. Kondro!

The Middle School Career Workshop was back again on 15th March! An assemblage of panellists who are experts in their field filled the classrooms, energized the minds, and touched the hearts of eager students. The workshops covered an array of fields, from arts, technology to science.

It was a day for the students to let their hair down and express their creative side composing sugar artwork on a cookie

canvas, splashing bold bright colours on batik fabric and articulating what is in their heart on white woven fabric.

On the technology side, students learned to make a game in 30 minutes, tinker with electronics and sensors and play a university home-grown game.

The prize for most popular workshop goes to Chef Anges Sushi Making workshop, featuring colourful displays of dramatic seaweed smiley faces.

SIS Grade 8 Edward Liew Min Yu came as 1st finisher for the 11-12 years old Male category which consist of 1.2km Run, 3km Bike, and another 1.2km Run at Powerkids 2019 at Putrajaya on 2nd March 2019 morning.
