We will then be taught the basics of ‘elephant language’ spoken by the ‘mahout’, or caretakers, which will help us communicate with the animals during our time with them. We will then feed the elephants, learn about their eating habits & favourite foods & have the opportunity to try traditional elephant body painting with natural colours (this is not harmful to the animals in any way). We will then help to water & bathe the ellies.

Overnight at Neemrana Fort Palace (B) Day 17: Monday, 09 March – Neemrana/Mandawa

After breakfast we take another interesting drive, this time to the desert village of Mandawa (170 km/5 hours). We check into our quaint Rajasthani hotel, have lunch, then take an escorted walking tour though the cobblestoned streets of the ancient town. We visit a school (stopping first to purchase some notebooks, pens & pencils), admire havelis & temples, shop at local bazaars for traditional arts, crafts & souvenirs & visit a typical village home for ‘chai’ & optional henna hand-painting in preparation for the upcoming festivities!

Tonight there is a “pre-party party” when locals celebrate the annual Holika Dahan with bonfires & fireworks. The fires symbolize the burning of the evil demoness Holika & are a testament to the power of devotion over evil. Bring earplugs if you’re hoping for a quiet night! Day 18: Tuesday, 10 March - Mandawa

Today is a very special day in India. It is the Holi Festival - a Hindu spring festival also known as the "Festival of Colours" or the "Festival of Love". There will be singing, dancing, joyous celebrations & the traditional beats of dhol (drums), while at several enclosed courtyards & grounds in the village, young men will dance to the tune of musicians & drummers with many of them dressed in women’s outfits. A local brew of “bhang” (a cannabis based drink served at Holi) is prepared & the revelry continues till late – only to start up again the next day!

Join in the fun & purchase an inexpensive ‘kurta’ (cotton Gandhi-style wrap) or ‘pyjamas’ (white cotton trousers & long white shirt) to wear on the night & to keep as a souvenir of your magical time in Mandawa. Tonight we enjoy a special Farewell Dinner under the stars in the courtyard of our hotel as the celebrations happen around us. What a fabulous way to spend our last night in Rajasthan! Remainder of day is at leisure to pack, catch up on last-minute shopping, collect your luggage (if you left it in storage) or just recover from your Holi celebrations! Lunch at own expense. We’ll enjoy farewell drinks in the bar at 6:00 p.m. - the first drink is on us! – before we enjoy a casual last group meal in the hotel restaurant.
