History of Holi
•It is believed that there used to be an evil ruler called Hiranyakashyip.•He ordered to punish everyone who worshiping Lord Vishnu.• To his utter surprise his own son Bhakta Prahlad went against him and kept praying Lord Vishnu. •So he become angry and ordered his son to be killed. But all his attempts were failed because as Lord Vishnu saved him.• Then he sought her sister Holika’s help who had the unique ability to walk safety through fire .•She planned a trap and took Prahlad into centre of fire . But Lord Vishnu intervened again , instead of Prahlad, Holika was burnt alive.• Holi thus named after her. it’s a celebration of victory of good over evil.

Holi Dhahan-Bonfire
• On the eve of Holi, called Chhoti Holi people light huge bonfires, the ceremony is called Holika Dahan.
• To render greatfulness to Agni, God of Fire, gram and stalks from the harvest are also offered to Agni with all humility.
• Ash left from this bonfire ,people apply it on their foreheads.
• People believe that the ash protects them from evil forces.

Preparations• Heaps of various hues of gulal can be
seen on the roadside days before the festival.
• Pichkaris in innovative and modern design too come up every year to lure the children .
• Womenfolk too start making early preparations for the holi as they cook loads of gujiya, mathri and papri for the family and also for the relatives.

The Celebration• Holi celebration starts with the burning of
Holika in the eve of Holi.• People dance on the rhythm of dholak and
sing traditinal fock songs.• Children throw water ballon at passerby
and if any stares, they have ready naswer “bura na mano Holi he….”.
• People have pichkaries to drench the person from far and escape from further drenching.
