CREATIVE LEARNING GUIDE The Holi Throw experience could lead to greater awareness of different celebratory customs throughout the world. Links to History, Music and Dance could be formed, to enable students to learn and experience folk dances and practices from around the world as well as understand their own origins. Focussing on the uplifting experience of renewal, spring and cleansing, may enable students to reflect and respond to the experience through their own art making. Links to Visual Art through understanding how colour can connect and reflect emotion could be explored, and inspire artworks on the theme of Holi and celebrations of new life.

ART FORM FOCUS:Visual Art

KEY MESSAGES:How can colour communicate emotion? How can you celebrate new beginnings?

LEARNING OPPORTUNITY:These activities are designed to:• encourage children to make meaningful choices with regards to

expressing their feelings through colour• provide an engaging and uplifting experience with cultural links to

the meaning and significance of Holi.

LEARNING ACTIVIITES:EXPLORING THE CONCEPT OF HOLI• Research the term ‘holi’ and have students identify their

strengths and weaknesses as a student; friend; sister or brother. Focus on one weakness to make a strength and improve themselves and the concept of renewal.

• Develop a weekly ritual of writing what you are grateful for each week and place these notes in a jar. Use this as a weekly prayer ritual for celebrating positive events.

• Respond to a variety of images to discuss the use of colour and its associated emotion. Use picture books to discuss the use of colour to communicate emotion.

• Allocate pairs of small groups to create shapes to communicate emotions as specified by the teacher. One person is the sculptor and the other the clay being moulded to reflect a given emotion. Discuss the use of levels and shape, and their association with positive or negative emotions. Discuss what colour could be used for each clay shape and why. Repeat this activity with actual clay and paint your piece. Reflect on the shape and colour of your creation in communicating an emotional state.

CELEBRATIONS AROUND THE WORLD• Collect images of celebrations from the students’ lives to identify

characteristics of a celebration. Discuss the similarities and differences between the celebrations.

• Compare how different cultures celebrate events such as:– Zorba dance at a Greek Wedding– Halloween– Dragon Dance at Chinese New Year.

• Describe the setting and important elements of a given cultural celebration and identify how colour communicates emotion. Explain why the colour used for the event is appropriate.

• Learn a celebratory dance such as Zorba the Greek to perform as a class.

CELEBRATE AS A CLASS• Choose an upcoming event to celebrate as a class such as:

– Father’s Day– Valentine’s Day– ANZAC Day– Graduation

• Think about the purpose of the event and discuss:– colours that could communicate the emotion/s associated

with the event– decorations that would be appropriate and why.

• Design and create decorations and celebrate the event as a class.• Develop a ritual dance to communicate preparing for a chosen

class celebration. Encourage students to develop movement for stages of the celebration such as:– Preparing the food, costumes and/or location– Activities at the event.

• Join the movement into a sequence for the whole class to perform at the class celebration.

• Buy paper confetti (various colours and sizes) and throw it around the room and at each other at the chosen class celebration to honour traditional Holi celebrations.

• Prepare costumes for the class party by having each student bring a white T-shirt. Use plastic bags, latex gloves, rubber bands and colour dye to tye-dye the shirts (allowing them to sit overnight for best results) in preparation for the class celebration.

• Use watercolour paint and paper to experiment with lines, shapes and colours to reflect mood. Reflect on your own and other’s artwork and the colours chosen to communicate emotion.

• Make hand prints using different colours. Cut them out and join them to make decorations for the wall in preparation for the chosen class celebration or Holi Throw experience.
