EL MUSEO DEL BARRIO…BRINGS US WHAT NOONE ELSE CAN OR WILL.

Dear so-and-so,

As the New Year approaches I feel prompted to reflect on El Museo and the many firsts we have together garnered. Here are a few that come to mind.

We are the first Latino and Latin American museum of art in the United States.

We are the first museum in the nation to institutionalize bilingual arts education.

We are the first to organize a biennial exhibition series promoting Latino artists.

We are the first to institute an annual series of retrospectives by women artists.

We are the first museum to introduce a Spanish language program for individuals with Alzheimer’s or dementia.

We are the first to formalize philosophy for children through museum education.

Each of these came naturally to a museum founded on a deep and abiding sense of cultural responsibility.

Join me in sharing in our pride in these firsts, in owning the many innovations at El Museo as our own, and in committing with us to reimagining the American cultural landscape to reveal a richer nation within.

Our exhibitions open new worlds of art and culture to American audiences: from cinema, such as with Under the Mexican Sky, to fashion, Antonio Lopez, Future Funk Fashion, to architecture, Oscar Niemeyer, Radical Modernist; and from the local, The Young Lords in New York, to the global, The Illusive Eye—an international show of optical art from a Latin American perspective.

This is what we do—deliver new perspectives. As reported in The New York Times: “El Museo del Barrio…brings us what no one else can or will.”

Let’s keep earning those rave reviews. This holiday season, show your support for El Museo—for our shared spirit of innovation and commitment to cultural enrichment.

Cheers to you,

Jorge Daniel VenecianoExecutive Director
