    Reindeer Games includes a combination of math enrichment and creative thinking activities.

    The creative thinking activities are intentionally open-ended to encourage divergent thinking.

    Creative thinking is not only fun for students, but it is also important. Divergent thinking

    increases a students desire to learn and supports his/her intellectual development. When we

    encourage creative thinking, we promote student engagement, motivation, and love for

    learning. Below are some possible ways to make the most of the open-ended activities

    included:

    1. Accept and celebrate all of the ideas students offer even the ones that are wacky or off the

    wall. When brainstorming, the goal is quantity, not quality. Generating ideas is an essential

    component of, and often the first step in, the problem solving process. Students can always

    revisit their ideas later to decide which ones are worth keeping.

    2. Make it a game when using Reindeer Fun or Reindeer ABCs. Set a

    timer for 3-5 minutes. Students can work on their own or in teams to

    brainstorm as many items in the category as possible. When the time is up, students compare answers and tally

    points. Students/teams earn one point for each idea (fluency). Students/teams earn additional points for each

    unique response that no one else has (originality). The player/team with the most points wins.

    3. Encourage collaboration! Creative thinking does not exist in a vacuum. People learn from and thrive on the

    inspiration and ideas of others. Encourage students not to copy but to build on, develop, and extend the ideas

    of their peers.

    4. Make time to share. Not only do students love to share their original creations, but it also supports

    and promotes further creative thought. Seeing other ideas and perspectives can help students to

    approach their own work in different ways. In addition, students are more likely to be purposefully

    engaged and challenge themselves if they know their work will have an audience.

    Reindeer Fun:Brainstorming is an open ended activity, so

    answers will vary. Possible answers might include:

    Round: a clock, the letter o, Jupiter, a hole, a

    ball, Santas belly, etc.

    Cold: The North Pole, ice cubes, snow, the lake

    in winter, the pool after a hot tub, The Grinchs

    heart, a nasty remark, etc.

    Kids are incredibly creative! They continue to

    surprise me with the variety and originality of their

    responses!

    Reindeer ABCs:

    This is an open-ended activity with a wide variety of

    possible answers. Here are some possible

    responses:

    Up in the air:

    A = airplane

    B = balloon

    C = cloud

    D = decisions

    Reindeer Art:

    This is an open-ended activity designed to promote

    creativity and divergent thinking; answers will vary.Check out the Teacher Tips for suggestions on

    how to nurture creative thinking and how to use the

    printables in different ways.!

    Answer KeyReindeer Logic:

    Ruby = octagon

    Clarence = triangle

    Theo = rectangle

    Glory = hexagon

    Edmund = square

    Tori = pentagon

    Sam = trapezoid

    ** Note: Students may be initially tricked by the clue that Edmund is a

    rectangle. A square is a type of rectangle! My goal was to help

    students think critically about the definition of 2 dimensional shapes!!

    Reindeer Patterns:

    1. Reindeer = 2; The four numbers add up to12

    2. Reindeer = 10; The product of numbers 1

    and 3 equal the product of numbers 2 and4.

    3. Reindeer = 1; The sum of the two digits ontop equals the number below.
