he holiday season brings opportunity to think about your community and fellowship with your friends and families. The neighborhoods of Athens will

begin to brighten with holiday lights, and introduce new ways to get to know the place that you call home. Among the events listed in our Holiday Guide, we also outline community service opportunities and groups that always benefit from extra hands around this busy time of year. And with holiday breaks coming up on the horizon, schedules open for more time to party and toast with the folks that we appreciate every season. No matter the event you’re hosting, we have a playlist and holiday game that will make you smile.

Bundle up and take a walk down Milledge Ave. Stop in Five Points and say hello to the merchants. Have some fun, you deserve it. Be kind this holiday season and learn something new about your community - it will start the year off right!

An exciting offering from The Red and Black captures the personalities and flavor of campus life throughout the paper’s 120 year history.

For Every Bulldog on Your List

very university has its lasting traditions, but the University of Georgia’s Shirttail Parade has to take

the cake – or in this case the pants. Started in the 1930s, the campus tradition called on male freshmen to drop their pants and parade (pictured above) in their underwear through the streets of Athens. “There will be a contest for the most ‘undressed fresh-man,’ The Red & Black wrote in 1961, “with a first place award of $5.00.” This event, plus many other campus traditions, organi-zations, trends and transitions are explored in Dear Old U-G-A, a look at student life through the pages of The Red & Black from 1893-2013. Written by Carrol Dadis-man, a former editor and publisher with Knight-Ridder

Newspapers (and former Red & Black editor as well), Dear Old U-G-A is a 384-page tribute to the university, with more than 225 photos and thousands of references to the people who made history on campus. “In his splendid book, Dear Old U-G-A, Carrol Dadisman brings back a flood of memories for all generations who attended the University of Georgia,” wrote Tom Johnson, former president of Cable News Network. “Historical ele-ments of campus life are recalled with warmth, humor, surprises, disappointments, triumphs and tragedies.” A perfect gift for any UGA grad, Dear Old U-G-A is avail-able at the University of Georgia Bookstore, Barnesand-Noble.com and Amazon.com.

THE ROCKING NEW YEAR’S EVE PARTYIt’s okay to go all out and over the top on New Year’s Eve. Reuse your shiny Christmas decorations, so keep the tinsel, electric lights, and garlands hanging up. For a really awesome party, replace all your lightbulbs with fluorescent ones. Just before the New Year’s ball drops, be sure to hand out party poppers, horns, and cham-pagne. Everyone has a favorite song or video they want to share, so while you’re waiting watch music videos with your friends. The inventory on Youtube makes it pretty easy too. Make sure you have an appropriate cord to hook up your laptop to your TV. Get started with these crowd favorites:- Calvin Harris - Summer - Ariana Grande ft. Iggy Azalea - Problem - Meghan Trainor - All About That Bass - Jason Derulo ft. 2 Chainz - Talk Dirty - DJ Snake & Lil Jon - Turn Down For What

Your Perfect Holiday Party

FOR THAT QUIET EVENING WITH LOVED ONESLove, tradition, and bonding are themes you want to express through the party. Bond with your guests by planning activities everyone can be a part of. Pull out the board games, shuffle a deck of cards, or try crafting holiday decorations. Make your family feel loved with some hot chai tea or eggnog topped with whipped cream and cinnamon sugar. Set the atmosphere with traditional holiday music. Our suggested playlist:- Jethro Tull - Greensleeves - Mariah Carey - All I Want for Christmas is You - Beach Boys - Frosty the Snowman - Dean Martin - Walking in a Winter Wonderland - Michael Bublé - Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas

A WINTER NIGHT WITH FRIENDSJust have fun! Throw tinsel, garlands, and electric lights on the walls. As your guests arrive, hand them some hot cocoa and marshmallows to warm their hands and their hearts. Inspire a few laughs with a tacky sweater contest or white elephant exchange. Are your guests into pop, rock, dancehall, or something else? If you aren’t sure, lean your playlist towards classic covers, but make sure to pick songs with an upbeat pace. Try out these songs:- Trans-Siberian Orchestra - Winter Wizards - Weezer - We Wish You a Merry Christmas - The Waitresses - Christmas Wrapping - Karmin - Sleigh Ride - Victoria Justice - Rockin’ Around the Christmas Tree
