TEMPLE NEWS From the Rabbi………….
I am writing this article on the bus-ride home from a “Stand with Israel” Rally in NYC. Several members of our synagogue and about 10,000 other supporters of Israel joined me. It was the largest group in the world outside of Israel gathered to support the state of Israel.
Amazingly, the cramped conditions and the 90-degree weather did not stop or quiet this fervently pro-Israel group. With every speaker’s words, we cheered. Politicians called for continued support of Israel's right to defend itself, and we cheered. Rabbis demanded that the UN turn its accusations of human rights abuses on Hamas and not on Israel. We cheered. Community leaders called on the world media to judge Israel with the same yardstick they use when judging every other sovereign nation under attack from terrorists. And we cheered. It was incredibly uplifting to see and hear Jews of every brand and background speaking in unison and with one voice!
Then, in one spontaneous moment, the entire crown began to sing Am Yisrael Chai, Am Yisrael Chai – The People of Israel Lives and I felt a super-spiritual surge enter my consciousness. I knew in that moment that there is still something whole in our broken world and that whole thing is the Jewish People!
I share this with you because I want every one of you to have that feeling. I know it is not just at rallies that we can feel this; it is at every Shabbat and Holiday service at the temple. This year, at any one of our services, I encourage you to be aware of those moments when we you feel at one with the people around you. Maybe it will be during one of the moments when we are all joined in prayer or song. Maybe it will be during a moment of silence. Maybe when inspiring words are being spoken. The truth of the matter is that we all need to have these moments of ‘connection’ in our lives because they remind us that we do stand on solid ground even when there are waves of uncertainty around us.
I look forward to seeing you at our High Holy Day Services and all of our services throughout the year.
From my family to yours Shana Tova – may it be a good year!
B’Shalom,
Rabbi Todd Chizner

TEMPLE NEWS
Cantor’s Song As the summer enters into its final phase, as the sun slowly sinks into the horizon earlier and earlier, our thoughts turn to the Jewish concept of time and space. The High Holidays are coming. They won’t be here as early as last year when the summer camp laundry was barely done; however, my High Holiday preparation is in full swing. I have been rehearsing with our temple accompanist Steve Belfer and our professional choir, as well as practicing the musical selections that are only sung on the High Holidays.
One of those settings, Kol Nidre, is the name of the recitation as well as the name of the evening service that indicates the beginning of that holiday.
Yom Kippur is one of the most important Jewish holidays and is traditionally believed to be the day upon which God determines the fate of each person for the coming year. For many, hearing Kol Nidre is the defining moment of the Yom Kippur experience. Kol Nidre, recited on Yom Kippur eve, means “all vows” in Aramaic. When recited, Kol Nidre asks God to nullify any vows that were made unintentionally or under duress.
The Kol Nidre text acquired significance for the Marranos during the Spanish Inquisition when they secretly recited it on Yom Kippur to renounce their promise to adopt the new religion that had been forced upon them. However, the well-known tune used today does not date back to the time of the Marranos. The first to mention a specific tune for Kol Nidre was Rabbi Mordechi Jaffe (1530-1612). In his Rabbinical Code, he approves a particular tune which developed some time between the middle of the 15th to the 16th century. The melody that stirs the heart of Ashkenazic Jews is of unknown origin, but is part of a body of music known as “MiSinai Melodies” that emerged in Germany between the 11th and 12th centuries. “MiSinai” literally means “from Sinai.” This special tune did not originate anywhere in the Middle East, but Ashkenazic Jews revere them as if they “came down from the mountain.”
Clearly, there are many variations in the way different cantors chant Kol Nidre, and many compositions for voice as well as instruments are based on this particular tune. As with any “folk melody” transmitted over time, each performer creates his or her version of the tune. By the time the melody was notated (written down) there was a clear consensus in terms of the outline of the tune as well as the distinctive and moving opening melody. It is also interesting to note that contemporary congregations may use a wide variety of accompaniments for the service in general. The Kol Nidre tune is especially meaningful when accompanied by wind or string instruments.
The music of the High holidays is not meant to sound and feel like Shabbat. The Holidays are a special time of year and its music reflects the unique quality of such an important time. The simple meaning of Kol Nidre has spiritually enriched us for centuries. May we, God willing, continue the tradition this Yom Kippur.
From my heart to yours,
Shanah Tovah U’metukah
Cantor Abbe Sher

TEMPLE NEWS
Message from the President
We will soon be welcoming the New Year. My hope for each of you is a new year filled with health and happiness and time to enjoy all that life has to offer.
I am very excited to be the President of Temple Judea at this time of rejuvenation in our temple’s life. I would like to use this opportunity to share some of my plans and hopes for our congregation. Our temple board, temple committees, and staff have been working hard to try to attract new members while retaining current members by making each of you feel connected to one another and to our temple. I’m particularly happy to say that our Religious School led by Lauren Resnikoff has played a key role in those efforts. We also have been getting fabulous ideas from the brainstorming being done at committee meetings. Ideas alone, however, are not enough to build something better. What starts as enthusiasm at a planning meeting can be difficult to sustain and see through to execution, but we are fortunate to have several new leaders as well as more experienced ones who have been working together to make things happen. I encourage you all to look at the list of Committee Chairs in this bulletin and to contact the appropriate chair if you would like to participate or give suggestions for that committee.
Please visit our website www.temple-judea.com as often as you can. You can check our calendar for all of our services, upcoming events, fliers, suggestion box, ways to donate, etc. Our website is also becoming a fundraiser for us – please read Peter Heilbrun’s report in this bulletin to find out all the other ways he has enhanced it.
Some of you already are our leaders. It is our responsibility to set the example and engage our families, our fellow Congregants and our community. We are a “big tent” with activities and events for people interested in all areas of religious, social, and educational life. We need that widespread engagement to sustain and grow emotionally, intellectually and financially. Members giving time and support empowers ALL of us to make Temple Judea the best that we can be. One of my goals therefore is to identify new leaders who are willing to engage their peers and others to be involved in our community and temple life.
I feel we all, not only our board members, should see it is our responsibility to reach out to anyone who shows interest in our temple whether at services, at any temple function, or in our community. Many of us who have come to look upon the temple as our second home began by becoming involved in just one aspect only to find so much more once we got started. When Stan and I joined Temple Judea 25 years ago, the president of Temple Judea called to welcome us and asked us to think about the areas in which we wanted to be involved in addition to our coming to services and enrolling our son in Hebrew School. I was then asked by Linda Bergman to join Sisterhood and she wanted to make me the Welcoming Person on the Membership Committee. She felt they had never asked a young person to call and welcome new members. Many of you know that I make every effort to meet our new members so that they immediately feel as if they are part of our temple family. I also enjoy continuing to connect with our long time members and value them tremendously. When I am on the bima on Shabbat or on the High Holidays, I enjoy seeing all the familiar faces of people I know.
As a longtime temple board member, I have since served on virtually every committee and have asked different members in our congregation to serve on those temple committees as I did as President of Sisterhood of WRJ – getting to know them first to determine how I could engage them. Now, as your President, I plan to fulfill some important goals. I also know and respect the fact that some of you don’t want to get involved in committees, and that you just come to pray and find our temple sanctuary to be a comforting place for prayer with services that are warm and welcoming. I share that love for our services, and enjoy conversing with you after the service on Friday nights and sharing with you the spirituality of prayer.
So this is our goal together: to help make us the best that we can be and to help others realize that Temple Judea is a wonderful Jewish home that offers friendship and spiritual, intellectual and social stimulation. We must have our arms wide open to welcome everyone into our diverse family.
I hope we all feel the presence of God within our sacred community when we pray at the High Holidays and whenever we come to Temple Judea. My hope and prayer is that God will grant good health, wisdom and strength to all of us: the officers, the Board of Trustees, the clergy, the staff, and the congregants. We then we may then be able to attain our goal of engaging people in temple life in any way they feel comfortable and fulfilling our mission as Kehillah Kedosha, a sacred community.
Stan, Alex, Jay, Rachel and my granddaughter, Sarah, join me in our wish to you for a happy, healthy, and sweet new year with our hopes that in this year of 5775 all of your dreams will start to come true.

Welcome back to all of my fellow congregants. I hope that you had a warm and fulfilling summer. I share a strong spirit and desire to welcome the fall with all of our returning Sisterhood members. I am excited to meet our new members and share all we have to offer.
For those who are not familiar with WRJ, these are some of the things I love most about our WRJ/ Sisterhood. Sisterhood has a vision — that our fellow members will be drawn to this group as a place where you will want to spend some of your very precious time. The power of the women in our Temple family is incredible, and I want to harness that power in an inclusive manner to bring success at Temple Judea and at home as well.
We offer so many ways to become involved. The New Year is the perfect time to create more, and lasting friendships and associations. A perfect example is our New Years Greetings fundraiser. This is a wonderful way to send L’Shana T’ovah wishes to our friends at Temple Judea. Coming up this fall and winter we have great projects planned, some of which are: Israeli programs, Rosh Chodesh, book groups, film festivals, College Connection, my favorite Games Day and Mah Jongg, Purim Package Project, Rummage and Vintage Sale, and Geriatric Luncheon (also a favorite) to name a few. We are partnered with the Sid Jacobson JCC and the Jewish Book Council for author presentations. On Tuesday evening, October 21st at 7:30pm, we will be hosting our first author presentation. We are thrilled to be having Rebecca Alexander speak about her new memoir “Not Fade Away.” Rebecca is a psychotherapist, spin instructor, volunteer, and an extreme athlete who is almost completely blind and deaf at thirty-five. Please save the date and join us.
WRJ membership, we hope and trust, brings you into a closely knit group of Jewish women who strive to support the Jewish community, Jewish women's rights globally, and our Temple Judea. We also support other wonderful Jewish causes and Israel. A significant percent of what we raise goes back to the temple. Last year, sisterhood contributed to updating and maintaining our Temple website, and allowed the temple to incorporate Google Ad Words. We also made contributions to nursing homes and VA Hospitals in the area, along with donations to Israel.
Sisterhood is all about caring. Sisterhood lost a longtime dearest sister Arlene Ruderman this summer. She exemplified the caring and warmth of our Sisterhood. Her passion and energy for Sisterhood will be missed greatly. May Arlene’s memory be for a blessing.
Most of all, our members of the Sisterhood support each other.
I know you are busy and some have more time than others. Let us reach out to you and just ask you to come sit with us for five minutes or a few hours. We want you to join our team to give us greater diversity, inclusiveness, and also to have fun! Please look at our monthly calendar for events and meetings. I would love to have your participation.
On behalf of the Sisterhood of WRJ, my family and I wish you and your family, a Happy, Healthy and Sweet New Year.
B'Shalom, Kathi Kafka President of Sisterhood of WRJ [email protected]

BROTHERHOOD NEWS
Brotherhood of Temple Judea, now nearly 100 members strong, continued to sponsor and participate in a variety of events in the late spring and early summer.
We continued to play our part in temple outreach efforts in May by participating in the Barnes and Noble Book Fair on May 4. Dr. Lewis Maharam once again spoke and signed copies of his book on running healthily, which was especially timely since the Long Island Marathon had been run that morning. Brotherhood members also worked at a table providing information about Temple Judea, and Dr. Michael Wininger helped to wrap books and other items purchased by interested customers. I’m also proud to announce that Brotherhood paid for the 50 Temple Judea T-shirts that were worn by our representatives at the book fair and that can be used at future outreach events.
Heading into summer, Brotherhood held a well-attended and delicious four-course dinner at Mitch & Toni’s American Bistro on June 10. We followed up with another four-course meal at Uncle Bacala’s on July 21. Our dinners have been very gratifying for me, as members of all ages have come together to network and enjoy each other’s company while discussing how we can serve temple causes.
At the time of writing this article, we’re working with WRJ-Sisterhood and the Membership Committee to put the finishing touches on our August 1st extravaganza. We’re looking forward to a special Wedding Anniversary Celebration Shabbat service “Under the Stars” followed by a sumptuous dinner indoors. I hope as many of you as possible had a chance to attend that special evening.
With the High Holidays approaching, Brotherhood also has its sights set on hosting the Sukkot Barbeque on Sunday, October 5 from 11:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. There will be food and entertainment for all as our kids will be able to play in a bouncer and complete crafts projects in our sukkah. That will be just the kickoff event for what I anticipate will be another active year for our temple’s Brotherhood.
Finally, I’d like to thank my fellow Brotherhood board members Dr. Joel Laxer, Dr. Michael Wininger, and Mark Keller for their invaluable help during my first year as Brotherhood President.
B’Shalom,
Stan Goldklang, President

SOCIAL ACTION NEWS
Hunger on Long Island Our congregation has generously responded to our notices about the shortage of food at local food pantries, particularly the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). We have made several deliveries of the non-perishable foods that have been collected in the basket in the lobby of the synagogue. Please continue to make these contributions when you come to the temple. It is a meaningful way to help those who truly need our help! Many organizations also take perishable foods. Don’t let your leftovers go to waste! Do you have extra food from a celebration or untouched food from a house of mourning? See The Food Recovery Page in the bulletin for names of organizations where you can deliver the food. And ... we always collect literally tons of food at our annual ... High Holy Days Food Drive Empty grocery bags, once again generously donated by Holiday Farms, will be handed out to the congregation on Rosh Hashanah. On Yom Kippur, congregants return the bags filled with non-perishable food, to be distributed by the INN (Interfaith Nutrition Network). This has become a Temple Judea tradition — and one that provides truckloads of food to needy people in Nassau County.
The Lone Soldier Project ... A Way to Help Israel! We continue to support our Lone Soldier in Israel. Lone Soldiers are volunteers who go to Israel to serve in the IDF ... and have been risking their lives during the latest round of terrorism. In fact, at least two American Lone Soldiers have been killed. Temple Judea has “adopted” Naftali Caplan, a Lone Soldier from New York. Our sixth grade religious school students have written to Naftali and supplies have been collected and sent to Israel.
SUPPLIES FOR SUCCESS As part of the 13th annual UJA Federation of New York’s Supplies for Success drive, our congregants were asked to donate new school supplies to ensure that children in need return to school with the tools they need to succeed. Last year, UJA filled backpacks for more than 5,000 disadvantaged children!
M’YAD L’YAD M’Yad L’Yad is a Jewish organization dedicated to helping Long Island’s neediest through anonymous pairings of volunteer sponsors and recipients. In the past, Temple Judea provided “treat bags” for M’Yad L’Yad’s children for Purim and has donated Chanukah toys. This summer, the Social Action committee purchased twenty $5 Dunkin Donut gift cards that were accompanied by a personal message from Temple Judea's congregation wishing the recipients a good summer. Each Dunkin Donuts card was attached to a $100 gift card donated from a generous and anonymous donor on Long Island. This was a project spearheaded by TANS, a social action consortium from North Shore synagogues and JCC’s.

Adopt-A-Family We are continuing to assist our Jewish Adopt-A-Family. Thanks to our wonderful shoppers and the generosity of our congregants, we provide the family with much needed groceries each month. The mom in our family has suffered a stroke and no longer can work and the dad is out of work and struggling to find a new job and take care of his wife and family. They have three children, a son who is 20, another 9-year-old son and a 7-year-old daughter. They are also victims of Hurricane Sandy and are still in need of many household items. They appreciate all the help we can give them. If you want to assist this family, please send a contribution to Temple Judea with Adopt-A-Family in the memo. Even $5 can make a difference!
Save the Date and Your Winter Coats and Sweaters! Social Action Weekend and Coat Drive
The Social Action Shabbat will take place on November 14. In addition, Temple Judea is once again participating in a community-wide collection and distribution of winter clothing. We are collecting and sorting coats, hats, sweaters, scarves and gloves. Children's apparel is especially needed!! Our congregants will be distributing the clothing and food to those in need in Glen Cove on November 16. Our religious school children will be making sandwiches and preparing snack bags. Please ask everyone you know (not just Temple Judea members) to donate their gently used winter clothing — you can make a huge difference to many people who would otherwise suffer through the coming winter. We have discovered that people donate winter coats very early in the season ... so ask your friends NOW! Temple Judea will be participating in this event with members of TANS (Tikkun Alliance of the North Shore). There are so many ways to participate in this weekend — from collecting to sorting to setting up and distributing on site. Those who have volunteered in the past know what a special experience this is!

Holocaust Resource Center Update In the last two weeks anti-Semitic events in France have become a daily occurrence. Thousands marched in London protesting against Israel. Even in Germany there are demonstrations against Israel. Some of the events are violent. Israel is the villain in the latest war with Hamas. Even Secretary of State Kerry has made some disparaging remarks about Israel off camera. The President of Turkey has compared Israel to Hitler in his speech. Even those that we consider “friends of Israel” who espouse that Israel has a right to defend itself are implying the disproportionate response by Israel. The media has been relentless against Israel. Not just Al-Jezera or the New York Times but almost all news outlets. Even academia and some church groups have joined the anti-Israel choir.
All this, while 160,000 people have been slaughtered in Syria, the daily bombing in Iraq killing dozens, fighting in Afghanistan and Isis taking over parts of Iraq hardly make a ripple in the media.
I am sure this does not come as a surprise to anyone. This response is all too familiar to us from the past and in recent history. The mantra is that Israel and by extension the Jewish people are the cause of all Middle East and world problems. In spite of this rhetoric, both houses of US Congress unanimously support Israel’s right to defend itself against Hamas terrorism.
Why did Hamas Gamble on War?
Hamas, the Palestinian militant group that controls Gaza, was hamstrung politically, economically and diplomatically. Its leaders appeared to feel they had to do something. Their leadership realized that they had nothing to lose by provoking Israel and lobbing rockets into Israel. Israel will eventually have to respond. The world will condemn Israel and Hamas’ prestige and standing in Gaza and in the Arab world will be reinstated. Since a war with Israel will be very destructive, the UN and the rest of the world will pour money into Gaza, thus improving their economy, which will yield more support to Hamas. If they are lucky, they may even get some concessions from Egypt and Israel. The fact that hundreds of civilian Palestinians may be killed is an added bonus in terms of its anti-Israel propaganda value.
The conflict has demonstrated that while Hamas governed over 1.7 million people mired in poverty, its leaders were pouring resources into its military and expanding its ability to fight Israel. If it can turn that improved military prowess into concessions, such as opening the border with Egypt, that may boost its standing among the people of Gaza — although at an extraordinarily high cost in deaths and destruction.
Hamas had been struggling. The turmoil in the region meant it lost one of its main sponsors, President Bashar al-Assad of Syria, whom it broke with over his brutal fight against a Sunni Muslim-led insurgency, and weakened its alliance with Iran. It lost support in Egypt when the Islamist president, Mohamed Morsi, was ousted and replaced with a military-backed government hostile to Hamas.
Unemployment in Gaza is around 50 percent, having risen steeply since Israel pulled out its troops and settlers in 2005 and severely tightened border restrictions.
Hamas appeared powerless to end the near-blockade of its border by Israel and more recently Egypt. It could not even pay its 40,000 government workers their salaries.
At first, when Hamas rockets were being intercepted mainly by Israel’s Iron Dome system as Israel hit Gaza with devastating force, the group strove to persuade its supporters that it was having enough impact on Israel to wrest concessions: Its radio stations blared fictional reports about Israeli casualties.
But as it wore on, the conflict revealed that Hamas’s secret tunnel network leading into Israel was far more extensive and sophisticated than previously known. It also was able to inflict some pain on Israel, allowing Hamas to declare success even as it drew a devastating and crushing response. Its fighters were able to infiltrate Israel multiple times during an intensive Israeli ground invasion. Its militants have killed at least 27 Israeli soldiers and claim to have captured an Israeli soldier who was reported missing in battle, a potentially key bargaining chip. Its rockets struck a blow to Israel — psychological and economic, by forcing a halt in international flights.
Hamas gains could be short-lived if it does not deliver a better life for the people of Gaza. Israel says its severe restrictions on what can be brought into Gaza, such as construction materials, are needed because Hamas poses a serious security threat, and the discovery of the tunnels has served only to validate that concern.
It is also unclear whether, when the fighting ends, Hamas will have the same kind of foreign support it has had in the past to rebuild its arsenal or its infrastructure; Egypt, under President Abdel Fattah el-Sisi, has destroyed the tunnels that were used to bring in arms, money and supplies, and has kept the proper border crossing mostly closed.
The international community is trying to achieve a cessation of hostility. Hamas is demanding concessions before they stop the rockets. Eventually the fighting will stop and Hamas will declare victory and start the rebuilding of tunnels and smuggle in rockets to prepare for another round of fighting.
This cycle of violence will only stop when the international community recognizes in deed rather than in words that Hamas is a terrorist organization and must be totally dismantled. Hamas is not interested in peace or building a state. Their only objective has been and remains the destruction of Israel. Israel not only has a right but a responsibility to defend its population and must continue to limit the war-making capability of Hamas whatever it takes. The tunnels must be destroyed and Gaza must be demilitarized if a semblance of security is to be established for a long term. In spite of the unfounded condemnations and anti-Israel/anti-Semitic propaganda in Europe and the world, Israel must continue its quest for secure borders and the world’s Jewish community must fully support it.

TEMPLE NEWS
Family Connection News
The Family Connection committee was created to engage religious school children and their families in fun and educational activities in order to foster a greater sense of Jewish community by celebrating Shabbat and the Jewish holidays, performing mitzvahs (good deeds) and by making Jewish friends. Allie Pritti is the new co-chair of this committee along with Janet Keller. We are all looking forward to the new school year and the High Holidays, which are fast approaching! We welcome all of the new Temple families and we look forward to seeing all of the member families who have joined us in the past. We kick off the season with the always-popular Sukkot Barbeque, which begins right after Sunday Hebrew School. It is a fun filled day with food, crafts and a “bouncy house.” We would love for you and your family to attend (and volunteer to help out if you can) to make sure our events are a great success! We also have upcoming family services including family services and a special Oneg celebrating Sukkot. We guarantee that you and your family will enjoy our events. Family Connection wishes everyone a very happy, healthy and sweet New Year and we look forward to seeing you all soon! Please be sure to check our website for all of our programs.

I can’t wait to celebrate my Bar Mitzvah with those most important to me, including but not limited to… my grandparents and my Aunts, Uncles and Cousins who have travelled far to be here today. I enjoy performing magic, playing Minecraft, and playing music. I just got back from Tannen’s Magic Camp. A sleep-away camp devoted to magic! As for Minecraft, Minecraft is a video game where you can build whatever you want out of blocks. Kind of like a virtual Lego universe. I also play saxophone and piano. I can’t wait to celebrate my Bar Mitzvah with my family and friends.

I have been playing since kindergarten and now I am a goalie on my school team. I also enjoy dancing, skiing, surfing and hanging out with my family and friends. I have been very fortunate to have travelled to many places in the United States and overseas. My 2 favorite places have been India and Israel (I have lots of family in both places). My Mitzvah project involves a school for handicapped girls in India. I plan to raise as much money as I can for supplies and other necessities for their school. I love to give back to people who are less fortunate than I am and make a difference in their lives, and I think this will. I can’t wait to celebrate my Bat Mitzvah with those most important to me.
