Guidelines and Process:
•Pick a song that is significant to you, has some visual imagery and is suitable for school
•Print out the lyrics and bring in for approval
•Your image should not only illustrate the song, but also stand on its own as a good piece of art... good composition, etc,
Make Plans
•Do EXTENSIVE RESEARCH... In order to draw things to make them look real, you must use imagery that looks real... Therefore, you must search things/images out (draw from photographs or direct observation, find images on the internet to draw from)
•Make 5 good sketches, not 3rd grade material

•The better your beginning, the better the end result.
•Do not marry the first idea that pops into your head.. You’ll wish you hadn’t
Chose Materials
•You may work with any 2D material of your choice. Pick according to the mood of the song. You may use more than one material.
•Cautionary Whale…….Now is not the time to experiment with a new material.
Requirements
•Paper is 16”x 20.” You may use materials other than paper if you wish.
•Think composition, detail, value, color, originality and creativity
•Originality and creativity are the top priorities in this project.

•Execution, detail, composition and overall appearance are key as well.
•Project estimate of 10-12 HRS
•Out of class assignment. Check out the materials that you need.
•This is 20% of your grade!
•EXAM DAY: 30 minutes given to finish last minute details, rest of time for class CRITIQUE

•Your image should not only illustrate the song, but also...
•Be a good piece of art... good composition, etc.
Do not make art that looks
like a grocery list of items
Not allowed• Musical instruments and notes
• Images of the artist or band
• Silhouettes
• Rainbows
• Sunsets
• Logos and symbols.
• Images of drug/violence/ weapons or inappropriate imagery.
• No inappropriate language
• ** A project will have images that are drawn and shaded well with value and detail. Get some photos to use as sources. Do not draw from your head.
Read your lyrics and think about
the imagery in the song

to create one interesting
UNIFIED balanced composition
BAD GOOD
While the end result might be an illustration of your song, it will also be a strong work of art on its own.
We won’t need to know the song to
appreciate the artwork. It should stand on it’s own.
