Scientific Process Planning Guide

Choose a title for your investigation

Make it interesting and catchy.

1. Aim A statement beginning with “To” explaining what you are trying to find out.

2. Question What is the question you are investigating? Example: How does changing ________________ affect _______________________?

3. Hypothesis – what do you predict will happen and why?

I predict ________________________ because __________________________. Choose one variable to change. Remember to keep the other variables the same.

Change one thing

(independent variable)

Measure/Observe

something (dependent variable)

Keep everything else the

Same (controlled

variable)

4. Materials List of equipment

5. Procedure – Steps taken to carry out the investigation.

Begin each step with a verb and number each step. Use equipment in ways that are safe and improve the accuracy of your observations.

6. Results – What did you observe? How will the data be represented?

Use pictures, words, photographs, tables, annotated diagrams or graphs to show what happened. Use scientific language.

7. Discussion – Why did it happen?

In detail explain your results with scientific language. Suggest possible reasons for your findings, based on patterns in the data. What problems did you encounter? Was it a fair test?

8. Conclusion – Was your hypothesis supported/ unsupported? Why?

How might you change this investigation next time? Example: My results supported/didn’t support my hypothesis because … If I repeated the investigation I would change ………………………… to improve ………………..

9. Journal – Day-to-day diary of what you did and what you found.

How did you come up with the idea? What did you do? What problems did you have? How did you overcome them? What were you thinking during your investigation? Record the dates/times for your reflections.
