Connectivity, or a sense of belonging, is a case of supply and demand, and when somebody is lacking
a feeling of being connected to the world, they seek out a means to fill their hearts demands for it,
but there may also be problems that originate from the seeker, such as fear, that prevent the gain of
this sense of belonging. Emily Dickensons poems this is my letter to the world, I had been hungry
all the years, and the saddest noise, the sweetest noise show this idea in detail, proving that
belonging is wanted by those who do not share a sense of it, and that they will find a way to obtainit.
A persons desire for what comes with belonging in a particular place drives them to find a way to
belong and to do so, but after isnt always easy for the person to maintain the feeling of
connectivity. Emily Dickensons poem I had been hungry all the years portrays to the reader the
feelings and emotions of being hungry for that sense of belonging, taking a chance on it, but finding
it overwhelming and realising that upon having that feeling of belonging, it is not what it seemed
when it was not owned. When the persona says and touched the curious wine they personify the
wine by adding the trait of curious to it, imprinting in the readers mind the idea that the
intoxication, as shown by the connotations of the wine, gained from the idea of belonging leaves
curiosity and a want for ones own belonging, rather than to watch others. Following the grasping of the curious wine the persona says the plenty hurt me t was so new Myself felt ill utilises the
change from referring to herself as I in earlier stanzas to myself as a change of perspective, to
reinforce in the readers mind how all those extra feelings that come with a feeling of belonging,
strangled her sense of self, and made her feel overwhelmed by it, as she no longer refers to herself
in the first person. From this we can see that when a person desires belonging they grasp at it, and
take a chance on it, but afterwards it may be difficult to hold on to the feeling as it may overwhelm
or frighten the individual with their newfound position in the world.
Means by which people search for a sense of belonging, include many different things, including a
cry for help, or a message seeking understanding. The poem This is my letter to the world by Emily
Dickenson, is portraying a persona, attempting to pass on the messages she gained from recluse, and what she did not get as well. The statement this is my letter to the world. Shows through the
connotations of [a] letter, the distance and time that separates her and everyone else, due to the
nature of a letters long travel distance and slow movement. This distance is attempted to be closed
by the persona by commit[ing] to hands i cannot see. Showing that the letter is the personas way
of attempting to find belonging in some way, even if it is just imparting her knowledge to others
through the high modality language of the hands i cannot see which also reveals to the reader the
fear that must be being felt by the persona, aas she does not know how she will be taken in by the
hands. From this we can see that people can search for belonging in various ways, such as sending
a message with all that you are stated, and that when somebody is seeking belonging the look for a
way to find it, yet there may be problems such as fear of the unknown that prevent the search.
Belonging is wanted by people; however, their pursuit of their place in the world can be halted or
slowed by a fear or failing. The poem The saddest noise, the sweetest noise by Emily Dickenson,
explains the sensations felt upon realising the continuing nature of the world, and the temptation to
try to clutch at the fleeting moments where one can belong to the world, but at the same time,
being haunted by the idea that in the end, they will be left with solemn loneliness after the moments
have past. The daunting reluctance to grasp opportunities is shown through the allusion to the
faeries of British myth, with the phrases March and April line, the magical frontier, and nights

delicious close. Which all bring forth images of beauty corrupted with mischievousness and
impishness, as these were the favourite time of the day and for the faeries in those British myths.
The superlative, paradox of the opening line uses the contrasting natures of the words saddest and
sweetest to immediately demonstrate to the reader the mixture of extreme desire for belonging,
but also the extreme fear of what it entails at the end. We can see from this that while belonging is
in high demand by most, and that they have a potential means of achieving belonging, fear or failurecan be another roadblock to the final achievement of a feeling of belonging.
From all of this we can clearly see that where people desire belonging, a means to gain belonging is
available, but it is not always easy to do, come in various ways, and is often daunting or hard to
settle into the newly found sense of belonging easily. This is shown in various ways from many
different texts, and also shows that to achieve a sense of belonging, a person must go through a
method of achieving it, and push through difficulties or fears associated with the journey.
