Meeting face-to-face

A pair of dignitaries brought an internation-al flavor to the Holmes County Fair on Monday. Marla Calico, the chief operating officer of Inter-national Association of Fairs and Expositions and Ollie Jones of Wales, the assistant chief executive of the Royal Welsh Show.

“We are a member-

based organization, so we need to talk to our mem-bers,” Calico said. “We need to see what’s going on, what are their success stories and what are their challenges. We could do that by talking or e-mail, but it’s great to see them in action.

“What we do is, we assign our staff to go to as many fairs as we pos-sibly can,” she continued. “I take vacations to go to

fairs, and this year, as it happened, I had planned a personal vacation to the Indiana State Fair.

We have a database that’s tied to a Google map, and so I could see what fairs are going on on certain

days, and I saw the Ohio State Fair was going on. And then I figured, if I’m all the way to Columbus,

School and Waynedale High School will open for the 2015-16 school year

with a full day of classes for students on Tuesday.

Parents of students who have moved into the dis-

The state requires stu-dents entering the sev-enth grade to have a sec-ond MNM immunization (measles, mumps, rubella) and Tdap vaccine (teta-nus, diphtheria, whooping cough).

Lunch tickets may be purchased the first day of the week or students may pay on a daily basis. The cost of lunch at John R. Lea and Waynedale is $2.75 per day. Infor-mation on the free and reduced lunch program will be sent home to par-ents as soon as school begins.

should go meet them face to face.”

She also scheduled a few stops at other fairs on her way back.

“Ollie got this presti-gious scholarship, and we knew he’d be in the States, so I fixed him up to visit some fairgrounds

on his way from Chicago to the Wisconsin State Fair. I picked him up in Columbus, and when we get back to our base office in Springfield, Mo., someone from my staff is going to take him to a county fair in Arkan-sas and then the Mis-souri State Fair, and then he’ll join an international

contingency to hit the Iowa State Fair, the Ken-tucky State Fair, Minne-sota State Fair and John Deere Headquarters.

“Ollie will be here in the U.S. for a month, and it fits perfectly with his scholarship and what he’s supposed to be learning about and writing about, impact agriculture,” she

continued.Jones says his toughest

task so far is keeping up with Calico and her nev-er-ending itinerary and boundless energy.

“I’m on an agricultural scholarship to study the role of agriculture shows, and draw comparisons with our shows to the state fairs in the U.S.,” Jones said. “I’ll be here for a month going around to state and county fairs, and interviewing a whole host of people from exhibitors to organizers.”

Holmes County Fair Board President Kerry Taylor entertained Cali-co and Jones on Monday, escorting them around the fair, introducing them to different people

and sharing stories.They also toured the

new fairgrounds at Har-vest Ridge. Calico was amazed at the generos-ity displayed by the peo-ple of Holmes County to accomplish the new grounds.

“I wanted to know how a small fair could do this,” Calico said. “We went and toured the new grounds. Incredible.”

Having grown up on a dairy farm in Missouri, Calico was fascinated to visit with various cattle producers and other peo-ple involved in the suc-cessful operation of the Holmes County Fair and the strong agricultural community.

The mission of the

International Associa-tion of Fairs and Expo-sitions is to lead in rep-resenting and facilitating the evolving interests of agricultural fairs, exhibi-tions and show associa-tions.

Taylor was honored to show Calico and Jones around the Holmes County Fair.

Garaway offers religious classes for creditGaraway School District

has offered the Release Time program for the past 60 years, allowing elemen-tary students to attend reli-gious classes one period one day a week. Sugarcreek Ministerial committee has overseen the program, which has been supported by most of the local church-es, various local organiza-tions and individuals.

In January 2014, bipar-

tisan legislation passed, House Bill 171, which provides schools with the option of awarding two credits for graduation to high school students for religious instruction dur-ing released time from school. As of 2014, Ohio and South Carolina are the only two states in America that offer reli-gious education at the high school level for credit

for graduation.Students must have

parental consent and classes must be held off school property.

High school students will attend release time classes one period each day five days a week and the mid-dle school students will meet one period each day for three days a week at Sugarcreek Church of the Brethren, which is located

directly behind the high school at 144 Yoder Ave. About 35 high school and 21 middle school students are registered for the classes for the 2015-2016 school year.

Moore to simulcast to Martins Creek MennoniteLifeWay Christian

Resources is slated to simulcast well-known Bible teacher and best-selling author Beth Moore live from Wichita, Kansas on Saturday, Sept. 12. Martins Creek Men-nonite Church is serv-ing as a host location for Holmes County and the surrounding areas. Living Proof Live, sponsored by Nashville-based publish-ing company LifeWay Christian Resources, will feature Moore’s dynamic storytelling and passion-ate Bible teaching.

The event both challeng-es and encourages women to grow deeply in their faith. Join 250,000 women around the world for this live, global, Internet streaming event. Moore

has authored dozens of published Bible studies, books and devotionals specifically for women for nearly two decades. Her newest LifeWay-published study, Children of the Day: 1 & 2 Thes-salonians (released May 1, 2014), is a Bible study that equips women to let the light of Christ shine brightly. Moore’s orga-nization, Living Proof Ministries, is based out of Houston.

Dove award-winning musical artist Travis Cot-trell, who also serves as worship pastor of Engle-wood Baptist Church in Jackson, Tenn., is slated to lead worship for the event.

The Living Proof Live Simulcast kicks off on Saturday, Sept. 12 at 10:30

a.m. and ends at 5:15 p.m. Doors will open at 9 a.m. Tickets are $20 per per-son, covering one full day of music and worship; ses-sions led by Moore; light breakfast; catered lunch when registered by Sept. 1, and opportunities for fellowship with other women from Millersburg and the surrounding area. Steam bus tour set for Aug. 29

The Holmes County Historical Society is spon-soring an Age of Steam

bus tour, which will take visitors on a tour through the Age of Steam Round-house in Sugarcreek, as well as Warther’s Carving Museum.

The tour, on Aug. 29, will stop for a lunch buffet at the Dutch Valley Restau-rant and conclude with a wine tasting at Baltic Mills Winery before returning to Millersburg.

Low cost spay/neuter clinic is Aug. 29

The Holmes County Humane Society Inc. is offering a low cost spay/

neuter clinic in the mobile Rascal Unit on Saturday, August 29. The clinic will be held at the Fire Station in Killbuck. Participants must pre-register through the Humane Society and prepay in full (check, cash or Paypal) by Aug. 18 to hold a spot.

Winesburg Art Show is Saturday on Main StreetAs summer draws to

a close and thoughts of golden leaves, fresh pen-cils and new crayons sift through your mind, put a note on your calendar to attend the eighth annual Winesburg Art Show.

The annual show will take place before the busyness of school begins and the days grow shorter.

From 10 a.m.-4 p.m. on Saturday, Aug. 15, enjoy some delicious local foods

and be inspired by the cre-ativity and talent of the artisans that will be dis-playing their work along U.S. 62, known as Main Street in Winesburg.

There will be live musi-cal entertainment, vintage bicycles restored by Glenn

Wengerd and free tours of the Winesburg Historical Society Museum.

local butcher shop, the Historical Society has brought historical charm to the village with brick walkways and street lamps, providing a relax-

ing and quaint ambiance for residents and visitors. In addition, several hom-eowners and businesses have restored their struc-tures, maintaining the

original logs and stone. The art show will take

place rain or shine. Park-ing is available along the street or just north of U.S. Route 62 at the town park.

Friends remember Momchilov with second 5K Walk/Run

Following a blockbust-er inaugural campaign, organizers are gearing up for the second annual Suzanne V. Momchilov Southeast Local Educa-tion Association Scholar-ship 5K Walk/Run, slated for Aug. 29.

The event, which gener-ated $13,000 a year ago for the scholarship, begins at 8:30 a.m. at Prairie Township Fire Station in Holmesville. Entry fee for adults is $25, while kids can participate for free.

Following 35 years of teaching in the district (Holmesville Elementary School), Momchilov, an intervention specialist, passed away unexpect-edly in November 2013.

A group of five close couples, many from Tri-way Local where Sue and Gipp Momchilov raised their family, spearheaded the event a year ago in the wake of the tragedy.

“She gave so much to the Southeast Local com-munity,” said event orga-nizer Jim Gray, who’s children went to Triway with the Momchilovs.

SELEA had its schol-arship, given to a senior planning on studying edu-cation in college, in place long before dedicating it to Suzanne Momchilov.

“Even when they cre-

ated the scholarship, she was an advocate for it,” said organizer Jeanne Cerniglia, a longtime coworker and friend of Momchilov. “It was only fitting that we name it after her.”

The scholarship, though, struggled to secure funds at times. The goal in start-ing the race, Gray says, was to ensure that never happened again.

“Before they were only able to donate between $500 and $1,000,” he said. “Our little group of five couples decided it would be nice to do something a lot more significant in Sue’s name.

“Some of us are runners ... and 5Ks are popular now,” Gray added. “We combined all of our skills to make this work.”

Cerniglia, past president of SELEA, said with the influx of cash in the schol-arship account, the com-mittee was in “uncharted territory.”

“We’re cognizant of the fact that just because something happens once, doesn’t mean it’s going to be a continual thing in generating money,” she said. “A lot of that money came from cor-porate sponsorship. We’re hoping to make enough money each year to replace what we give out.”

The event chose to not have corporate sponsors this year.

A year ago, 200 runners supported the cause with 30 volunteers helping out.

With an outpouring of support in its first year, Cerniglia said it shows the impact Momchilov had on the community.

“When you’re a teach-er in a small commu-nity, you really become part of these people’s families,” she said. “She built very close rela-tionships and was loved by the community. The run may be a fundrais-ing piece, but it’s really about remembering Sue as a part of our family and community — and celebrating that.”

Organizer Lisa Rum-baugh added, “It was overwhelming last year to feel the community support in remembrance of Sue. She was a great teacher and an advocate for education. To see peo-ple supporting the schol-arship was something she really would have appre-ciated.

“She was a very dear friend of mine,” the speech pathologist at Southeast Local said of Momchilov.

The event is held in con-junction with Holmesville Homecoming.

Momchilov was set to retire the year she died.

“A lot of people knew (Sue Momchilov) in her 35 years at Holmesville,” Gray said. “We want to see that the community

continues to benefit from her hard work.”

Mancation 5.0: Perilous return from the wildFive epic rides over

five glorious days in the mountains of North Carolina without a bro-ken spoke, a dropped chain or a single flat tire. That’s a notable accomplishment for six admittedly average men and a stable of 12 above average bicycles.

By those standards our fifth annual raid on the roads and trails sur-rounding the outdoor Mecca of Brevard, N.C., was a resounding success.

As much as I’d also like to report the absence of bloodshed, an honest accounting requires me to admit I did, in fact, bloody my shin — not in a crash (which would carry some modicum of honor) but rather in what I have officially termed “a swimming-related accident” when my flip-flop slipped off a pedal while returning to our campsite after a post-ride numbing in

our favorite river swim-ming hole. If the moun-tain gods must extract their duty in some fash-ion I’d say a lump on the shin is a small price to pay.

Down from the moun-tain I sit at my desk and ponder the points in the journey where peril seemed at its greatest — the off-camber goat path on the edge of a rocky abyss, the hairpin turn in the middle of a 50 mph descent, the giant drop over a root-strewn boulder — and I can honestly say nothing was more dangerous than the ride home in the van. I’ll explain.

When you turn men loose in the woods to play hard during the day

and bring them back to civilization to relax and refuel, you will find that even the best of them are not likely to make wise nutritional choices. Our crew ate Italian once, Mexican twice and anything that could be legally killed and brought to the table the rest of the time.

Moments before our journey home we hit a burger joint where doubles with cheese and a side of coleslaw were de rigueur.

We then piled into a rental van, which already reeked so badly of damp, sweaty gear we’d actually watch people along the streets check their own armpits after we drove by.

What began each time with a giggle would end with five screams and a 70 mph “flush blast” of wind as the only two open-able windows in the van were dropped in unison. Napkins flew, newspapers

Fall Trail Run set for Sept. 5The Pomerene Founda-

tion Fall Trail Run is set for Sept. 5 at the Millersburg Trail Depot (Rails to Trails) located at Clinton and Grant streets in Millers-burg. Sign-in begins at 6:30 a.m. or 30 minutes before the start of each event.

blew and flies clung to the ceiling. This cycle was repeated in rotation for nine solid hours.

By the time we hit the Ohio line the stew of gasses emanating from that van threatened to alter the global environ-ment. I sent a text to my wife letting her know

that I loved her and I may not make it back, asphyxia was at hand. Seconds later I lost con-sciousness.

I came to only when the van door opened in front of my house. Kristin was at the window to greet me, but wisely sent the dogs out first to test the

atmosphere. They wrig-gled with overwhelming joy — not entirely sur-prising since they’re given to rolling in poop on a regular basis anyhow.

I stepped out and drew a big, cool whiff of cut grass and green trees, a grateful survivor of Mancation 5.0!

Take time to read the instruction manualI am a very lucky per-

son and well taken care of by my family. Often when I need something, a brown truck pulls into the driveway and magically a box or package appears. And so it was a few days ago when UPS brought me a box. My need — a new phone — and when I opened the box there they were — four phones and the base. Having had some health problems, my son is making sure that I have a phone close by at all times.

I started unwrapping pieces, laid them all out on the kitchen table and prepared to try to put everything together. Then I proceeded to read the instruction manual. First was a page of “warnings” and “caution” to “prevent severe injury and loss of

property or life.” I didn’t realize a telephone could be so dangerous! One of the warnings told me to “unplug the product from the power outlets if it emits smoke.” There are times when a special friend and I talk so long that I wouldn’t be sur-prised to see the phone smokin’! We have a lot of things to talk about and many world problems that need solved.

“Caution — never install telephone wir-ing during an electrical storm.” As if I am calmly going to be installing tele-

phone wiring when light-ning is flashing every-where, thunder is boom-ing, wind is blowing, and rain and hail are pouring down. I will probably be headed for the basement! And, of course, don’t talk on the phone while in the bathtub. They failed to tell me that I might talk too long and the water could get cold.

Next was the “setting up” and all those interest-ing pictures. Why do we have to have all those confusing little pictures that no one can figure out? The only one that made any sense to me was the one that looked like a clock for setting the time. One was an open ended wrench which indicated to me that a bolt or something needed tightening instead of “ini-tial setting.” One of those notes told me not to plug the AC adapter into a ceiling mounted outlet. How many people have plug-in outlets in their ceiling? I live in an older home and I am lucky to have a plug-in outlet in each room. When my house was built they used oil lamps. Up next was the identification

of the “controls.” There were pictures, symbols and numbers to identify everything and to iden-tify display items on the handset. One of those was a picture of a phone that will be displayed to tell me the phone is in use and it will say “line in use.” If I have the phone in my hand and am talk-ing on it, I think I will know I am using it!

There were three pages titled “Making and Answering Calls.” One of the instructions was “You can answer calls simply by lifting the handset off the charger.” I guess they are assuming that if the phone rings I won’t know enough to answer it. Under making calls using the base unit, the first instruction was “dial the phone number after lifting the corded hand-set” — in plainer words — pick up the phone and dial. When finished talking, place the corded handset in the cradle.” In other words — hang up! Do they think aliens are purchasing these phones? There are all those spe-cial features — Hold;

to replace the County Road 207 bridge near Benton that’s been closed since last summer because of dam-ages during a flood event.

Repair of the bridge is being done through the Ohio Bridge Partner-ship Program. The Ohio Department of Trans-portation developed the program in late 2013 to provide resources to

assist counties and cities with the maintenance of bridges.

The program is investing $120 million over three years throughout the state to repair and replace more than 200 county and city-owned bridges. Money was made available for the program by Ohio’s efforts to overhaul high-way funding, including reduced overhead costs

and improved efficiencies at ODOT.

This bridge carries County Road 207 over Martins Creek just north of Township Road 603. Traffic has been detoured since last June.

ODOT’s contractor for the $509,000 project is V.O. Menuez & Son from Millersburg, and the completion date is mid-October.

Community invited to enjoy seniors’ artwork at exhibit

The public is invited to enjoy more than 85 pieces of artwork that will be displayed at the annual “Art is Ageless” exhibit at Walnut Hills Retirement Community on Saturday, Aug. 22. All of the art-work was completed by amateur artists who are ages 55 and older and who reside in Holmes County and the surrounding area.

The exhibit will be held in the Walnut Hills Retire-

ment Home, 4770 Olde Pump St., Walnut Creek, and will be open to the public from 10 a.m.-3 p.m. Admission is free.

“This is the fifth year we have hosted the ‘Art is Ageless’ exhibit,” said Paula Miller, community relations coordinator. “Each year the quality of the artwork has been outstanding, and we are expecting more of the same this year as we cel-

ebrate the creativity and imagination of older adults.”

Visitors to the exhibit will enjoy artwork from a vari-ety of categories, includ-ing paintings and draw-ings; photography; quilt-ing, cross-stitch and other soft crafts; woodworking, ceramics and other hard crafts; and miscellaneous arts and crafts items.

AccidentsA Killbuck woman was

injured in a crash on U.S. Route 62 in Killbuck Town-ship.

According to the Wooster Post of the State Highway Patrol, Amanda N. Zim-merman, 20, Purdy Street, was transported to Pome-rene Hospital in Millers-

burg by her a friend.Zimmerman was oper-

ating a 1998 Ford Ranger eastbound on Route 62, east of Township Road 86, when she traveled off the right side of the road, over-corrected and lost control. She went off the road to the left and struck two trees.

She was cited for operat-ing a motor vehicle without reasonable control, accord-ing to the patrol.

A Killbuck woman was injured in a crash July 22 on state Route 39 in Hardy Township.

According to the Wooster

Post of the State Highway Patrol, Ashley L. Fluhart, 21, Township Road 24, was trans-ported to Pomerene Hospital in Millersburg by a Holmes Fire District No. 1 squad.

Fluhart was operating a 2004 Mitsubishi Montero westbound on Route 39, at Township Road 301, when

she rear-ended a semi-truck stopped in traffic, according to the report.

The vehicle she struck was operated by Zoran Brleski,

34, Iroquois Trail, Mentor.Fluhart was cited for

assured clear distance ahead, according to the patrol.

Moms know when it’s still not cleanUsually I try to keep

my newspaper columns from my children because more often than not I’m letting the world know about one of their quirky habits or a potentially embarrassing story too

funny not to share. But this one, I want them to see. And read. And digest.

Every summer before school starts, we tend to go through a summer cleanup in preparation for the busy new year.

Out with the old, because once activities and home-work start, there is little extra time for doing any-thing as tedious and mis-erable as cleaning your room.

So before school shop-ping can commence in this household, rooms have to be clean. Clothes should be sorted and folded, desks cleared off, closets with some sense of order.

And that’s where this next part comes in.

Dear kids,It may come as a sur-

prise to you, but when I was a child I didn’t like to clean my room, either. My mother would demand I do it, and see-ing that I was a kid who preferred playtime over sorting socks, I wanted to get the task done with as soon as possible.

I know you all feel the same way, and believe me, I don’t like to clean my own room now. Even

as an adult. But growing up requires a good bit of “dealing with it” so you’re just going to have to get it done.

I am, however, going to give you a few guide-lines before your devious little wheels start turning and brainstorming how best you can trick me into believing that you have cleaned your room without actually doing it. I know you are thinking this, because long ago I thought it, too.

Your dad and I are old, but not so old we can’t remember how smart we thought we were when we were your age. (Spoiler alert: you’re not that smart, and neither were we.)

So please, when clean-ing your room, remember these tips:

1. Smashing your clothes into your drawers so they close but can barely reopen does not consti-tute an organized dresser.

2. Stuffing things under your bed is older than the day is long. It will never work.

3. A pile of wadded up shirts with one layer of folded ones on the top can fool some of the peo-ple some of the time, but will never fool mom.

4. Simply sliding the gar-bage off your desk and into a drawer does not count. But nice try.

5. Hiding piles of stuff behind a few well-hung articles of clothing in the closet will earn you no bonus points.

Follow these rules, and you’ll be ready for school shopping and a new year in no time at all. And remember, if you are spending your time think-ing of other ways to hide your mess, you’re wasting your time. Trust me.

Fredericksburg Ameri-can Legion Auxiliary Unit 651 met July 30 at the Post Home with

10 members present. A thank-you note was received from the Fred-ericksburg Library for a book donation and a field trip for the kids.

The Freedom Flags project went well and next year brackets will need raised. The auxiliary float at the Fourth of July parade won most patri-otic. The grill raffle went well, and Missy Sidle took grill and other accessories to Hilltop Villa and they

were excited and grateful. President Donna Lemon-Weaver and Sidle talked about the high team they attended.

The constitution and bylaws were passed out and discussed. Goals for 2016 were discussed. Cindi Satterfield offered to be the chairwoman of the auxiliary’s Buckeye Girls State program. The group will sponsor a Miss Poppy and maybe Poppy Princess next year.

Next year is the 100th anniversary of the auxil-iary.

Take celebration ideas to the next meeting. A sort of “Thelma and Lou-ise” Multi Posts Run was suggested. The next meet-ing is Aug. 27.

Fruits and salads for those hot summer daysWatermelon is the best

thing to eat on a hot sum-mer day. We’ve had lots of those lately and gone through a large quantity

of melon. We have given up buying the whole mel-ons since you never know what you will be getting, plus no matter how much

we eat we cannot get it all consumed before some of it goes bad.

I had been looking for rhubarb down here in

the spring, thinking it would be nice to make a pie. There was none to be found. One day last week I saw it for sale at

our local grocery, but I had no room in the refrig-erator or time to make a pie. The last time I went back there was no more rhubarb. I asked the lady who works in the produce department if that was just a fluke or will they have more. She says they get some in every once in awhile from some place up north. It must be from Alaska at this time of year since it is a cool weather plant.

I found an old clipping with a recipe called Fruit Pops for the Tots. (It would work well for adults, too.) To make this:

Dissolve 1 tablespoon ascorbic acid (or other substance to prevent darkening of fruit) in 1/2 cup water along with 2 tablespoons sugar. Next add 4 cups chopped fresh fruit such as bananas, peaches, pears, apples or melon. Fill eight 5-ounce paper cups with the mix-ture. Insert a wooden stick in the center and freeze.

To eat, peel cup from the fruit pop and serve with a paper napkin or outside if your kids are really messy.

I found one of my moth-er’s old recipes that is very refreshing for sum-mertime. It is called Red Raspberry Salad. To do this:

Make 1 large or 2 small packages of raspberry Jell-O using 2 cups of water. When the Jello is slightly thickened, add 1 medium can of applesauce and 1 box frozen red raspber-ries that has been thawed. It would not hurt if you wanted to put in some fresh raspberries, but that is up to you.

I will be glad when the hot weather is past. The Man of the House refuses to eat food that he thinks will make him warmer. Hence, there is very little cooking going on here. I tell him we have air con-ditioning but it must just be psychological.

I like to serve leftovers, but in order to do that you have to cook at least one meal sometime. He appar-ently does not get the con-cept of that.

It will be nice to be able to whip up a lovely stir fry meal or make a pot of soup again. My repertoire for salads is growing old.

Speaking of salads, today I went to a brunch at the home of our assistant pas-tor with some ladies from our church. We were each supposed to take some-thing. There were at least three mixed fruit salads on the table including mine.

I ended up bringing most of mine home since I was late arriving and the other ladies gave their leftovers to the hostess to feed her family with four children.

The reason I was late was because I thought I knew where I was going and didn’t. In the first place I was in the totally wrong subdivision and had writ-ten down the wrong name of the first street I was to turn on in the second place.

Hiland falls to defending champs in World Series game

Saturday marked the end of the road, but the ride — from Berlin to Bangor, Maine — was an unforget-table one this summer for Hiland.

The Hawks’ historic run to the Senior Little League World Series champion-ship game ended in an 8-1 setback to West Univer-sity Place, Texas Saturday afternoon in a game that was nationally televised on ESPN2.

Texas, which secured its second consecutive crown after winning the Senior League championship a year ago, had 11 returners who played on last year’s title squad. It is still the highest finish for Hiland in the history of its Senior Little League program and finished the summer at 31-3.

“We had a great run,” Hiland coach Mike Yoder said. “I’m not disappointed at all in how it went.”

Throughout the 16Utour-nament at Mansfield Stadium, the Hawks had always broken through with a big inning mid-way through the contest to pull away. On Tuesday against Maine, the Hawks scored three runs in the fifth, along with four-spots in the sixth and seventh. On Thursday, also against Maine but this time in the semifinals, Hiland got on the board and eventually ran away with seven runs in the fourth.

On Saturday, though, Texas returned the favor, hanging a seven-spot in the third.

Against Hiland starter Bryan Yoder, Texas led

off the third with back-to-back singles from William James and Jimmy Winston, putting runners on first and third.

The next batter, John Doxakis, hit a grounder to third and an error by Braden Mast allowed both James and Winston to score, putting Doxakis on second and giving Texas a 3-1 advantage. Then Jacob Millender reached on an error by shortstop Chris Kline, putting runners at the corners.

Texas promptly turned the defensive misplays into runs.

The pair of errors, along with three consecutive hits, highlighted by a triple from Mitchell Black, made it 7-1.

Derek Miller eventually relieved Yoder, but by the end of the frame, Texas had taken an 8-1 lead, with Black scoring the final run on a wild pitch.

“The kids played one bad inning and it got away from us,” coach Yoder said. “That third inning was an inning we haven’t had in a while. We had some oppor-tunities to get out of that inning and we just couldn’t do it.”

Early on, Hiland jumped on top, but scored only once in a first inning that seemed like it had the potential to grab the momentum early. A single by Tyson Gingerich, along with walks to Chris Kline and Mitch Massaro, loaded the bases with nobody out.

Bryan Yoder grounded into a double play, which did score Gingrich, but the first-inning scoring threat ended when Miller struck out.

The third inning was certainly where Texas

did most of its damage, but coach Yoder said the opening frame may well have been the game’s turn-ing point.

“A two-spot or a three-spot and it’s a different ball-game,” he said. “But if ‘ifs’ and ‘buts’ were candies and nuts, we’ve have Christmas all year round. Give the Texas pitcher credit. He made a good pitch.”

Texas tied the game right back up in the bottom of

the first. After Yoder retired the

first two hitters, four con-secutive batters reached base, with an RBI single by Joe Gobillot tying the contest at 1-1.

For the game, Texas was led by Winston, who was 3 for 4 at the plate. Gobillot and Turner Gauntt both went 2 for 3. Millender got the win on the hill, hurling 3 1-3 innings in relief, fan-ning three, walking none

and yielding only one hit. Yoder pointed out Texas

had not only tremendous experience on the field, but immense talent as well.

Six players on the Texas squad are committed to Div. I programs, led by Doxakis, who’s eventually heading to Texas A&M. Seven players on Texas’ roster are listed at 6-foot-4 or taller. “Those kids are big, tall and good ballplay-ers,” coach Yoder said.

“You’re talking about a great team.”

The same, of course, could be said about Hiland.

“Obviously we’re excited about our Hiland baseball program,” Yoder added. “This group that will be sophomores and juniors are talented kids. We’ve learned we’ve got some good leaders and some good ballplayers that will leave their mark.”

In fact, they already have.

While others quit playing LL, Hawks continue, and are rewarded for it

On a vacation in Cooper-stown, N.Y., I passed up the day’s activities last Saturday to stay in the hotel room and watch the East Holmes Senior Little League team on national television.

And while the Hawks lost to the defending World Series champs from Texas 8-1, their season-long per-formance just might open some eyes around the area.

East Holmes is the only area program to play Little League-sanctioned base-ball after the age of 12, but the experiences of its Junior and Senior League teams this summer may have some other communities re-thinking their approach.

“I’m going to be honest,” said Hiland Senior League coach Mike Yoder, “Little League baseball has helped our high school program. Because there are so many pitching rules in Little League Baseball, our teams in Walnut Creek, Wines-burg and Berlin are forced to develop pitching to abide by the rules.

“When the kids are 13 and 14 and we put them together, we’ve got 14 or 15 players that have pitched along the way,” said Yoder. “They’re not all equal skill-wise, but we teach them some big-boy baseball, and now we have a pitching staff.”

Yoder said he had 10 pitchers on this year’s Senior League squad, which

finished the summer with a 31-3 record. The Hawks played in two different non-Little League leagues, including the Stark-Summit Baseball League, to get ready for postseason play. East Holmes then swept through the state tourna-ment in Maumee, went undefeated at the regionals in Peru, Ill., then went 3-1 in Bangor, Maine to earn their WS runner-up title. Of the three-week LL run, players and coaches were on the road for 18 days, including 16 straight from regionals to World Series.

“It was an unreal experi-ence for the kids, a once-in-a-lifetime shot,” said Yoder. “The kids ate it up. There were way more positives that came out of the experi-

ence than negatives.”For some reason, though,

Junior and Senior League Little League hasn’t caught on in other area commu-nities. At Hiland, though, kids that go away and play travel ball after conven-tional 11-12-year-old Little League, come back for the Hawks’ Senior League team because of the success the squad has had over the years (East Holmes also went to the World Series in Bangor in 2010).

“It’s so big to keep most of our kids together,” Yoder said. “When they’re 15 and 16, they want to play for the team.”

Playing together in the summer helps the ultimate goal of improving Hiland’s varsity baseball program,

and the fact Yoder and his staff do things the way high school coach Tom Gibson wants them done, it prepares the players for OHSAA games in the spring.

“Tom supports us a lot,” said Yoder of Gibson, who was the bench coach for the Hawks in Bangor. “He’s got his fingerprints all over (the summer program).”

Will East Holmes make it back to Bangor again next summer? The coaches will tell you that’s the goal, but realistically, summer base-ball is about getting bet-ter, being challenged and dealing with pressure. The Hawks may not have fin-ished with a World Series title, but they did take the county on a ride half way across the country.

A group of 15 and 16-year-old kids from the eastern half of Holmes County made their cameo ESPN appearances, and went toe-to-toe with the defend-ing champs from Houston, Texas. Like me, the kids had many interrupting their day to spend two hours in front of the TV watching. And while they were outmanned in the title game, the players didn’t act like the moment was too big for them, and that’s the kind of athletes the Hiland program is looking for.

“Every year’s been a lot of fun,” said Yoder, finish-ing up his 11th summer coaching the Senior Leagu-ers, “but this year we took it a step further.”

Well done, Hawks, well done.

One of Historic Down-town Millersburg’s new-est businesses is making quite an impact as Farm-house Frocks and Lyssa Ann Portraits, located in the old Norman’s Bakery at 65 W. Jackson, Millers-burg, is bustling and busy Thursdays through Satur-days since opening in July.

Lena Schlabach, who made her mark in the business world marketing her Amish granola, is now rocking the frock, a line of clothes handmade by Amish seamstresses.

“This has been a fun ride,” Schlabach said. “I started almost a year ago, Farmhouse Frocks online. Three weeks after I was in business, Country Liv-ing Fair asked me to come to Atlanta for a show. I didn’t know if we could do it because we were just three weeks in business and you needed lots of inventory.

“Alyssa went with me, and I’m still blown away

how fast everything has taken off,” she continued. “All my clothes are made by Amish ladies. I have 11 Amish seamstresses. After Atlanta, we did a show in Nashville and a couple smaller shows and our on-line sales were taking off. I knew we were onto some-thing. “

Many of the frocks, which go from size 28 on down to size 5, are made out of recycled fabrics, such as vintage table-cloths.

“We’ll take a lot of vintage tablecloths and up-cycle them and make them into tops,” Schla-bach said. “I start from a plus size and go down to a size 5, and people usually start at size 3 and go up to maybe a 16. I start at 28 and make my sizes down. I think that is a huge thing. As a plus size woman, you don’t just walk in and find the leftovers. I’ve always liked vintage clothes and up-cycling.”

Alyssa Eliot teamed up with Schlabach two years ago when Lena reached

out to her for a collabora-tion on a project.

“We just clicked,” Eliot said. “She’s like a second

mom to me. We both like to think outside the box.”

Don’t mess with the college fundEditor:

Growing up the young-est of five kids on our family farm, we didn’t have enough to buy expensive clothes or take extravagant vaca-tions. We worked hard on the farm and learned the responsibilities and values that helped shape our lives.

We had to feed and water our animals and finish our chores before we could go back in for breakfast. Our animals always came first. During the week of July 4, we did, however, spend our yearly family vacation at the county fair showing and selling our 4-H live-stock projects.

When the checks from the livestock sale came, mom and dad only allowed us to keep enough money to buy our school supplies and clothes (and no we weren’t allowed to buy Nike shoes or designer jeans). The rest went into savings. By the time we graduated high school, the five of us each had enough money saved up to pay for the bulk of our college.

This was life-changing money for us. Without it, we would not have had the opportunity to pur-sue a college career.

As I was looking over my daughter’s 4-H paperwork for the upcoming fair, I noticed a form asking her to

donate a percentage of her livestock sale earn-ings toward the new Holmes County fair-grounds. There is even a chart enclosed (based on last year’s averages) that shows where a 15 percent donation for an average market steer was $676.65.

I believe that it is inap-propriate to ask a Junior Fair exhibitor to donate to this project. I’m quite sure most businesses in the area haven’t even donated this much. This is hard earned money that the kids have raised and they deserve to put it toward their future goals.

Several months ago I met a well dressed man at a local restaurant. He introduced himself and stated he was from a firm that was hired to raise funds for the new fairgrounds. When I brought this subject up to him, he merely stated, “… We need to explore every avenue we can to raise funds for the new fairgrounds.”

Perhaps they could explore other avenues such as the truck and tractor pull, the moto-cross, the demolition derby, the amusement rides or the concessions and leave the Junior Fair exhibitors’ college funds alone.

— Gerald W. and Edith (Welty) Pinnicks, 8469 Harrison Road, Freder-icksburg 44627, will cel-ebrate their 50th anniver-sary Aug. 21. They were married in 1965 at Freder-icksburg Church of Christ by the Rev. Don Wilkin.

They are the parents of Carla (Roger) Stark and Jolene (Karl) Schlabach. They have three grand-children.

They are longtime mem-bers of the Fredericksburg Church of Christ where they have been actively involved many years.

Mr. Pinnicks retired from Rexroth in Wooster in 1998. He enjoys work-ing in the yard and bird watching.

Mrs. Pinnicks enjoys gar-dening and sewing. They cherish time with family and watching their grand-children grow.

Trina was a kind and caring blessing to all who knew her. Through her employment years, her passion and favorite work was home health care, and caring for others. She attended NewPointe Community Church in Millersburg, and was known, even while she struggled with her own

health, to load up her patients, and take them to church with her.

Her pride and joy were children, Brandy (Woody) Davis of Coshocton, Jer-emy Miller of Killbuck, and Nichole Miller of Wooster; she adored her grandchildren, Jonathan Davis, Felicity Miller, Hayley Davis, Nevaeh Miller and Wesley Brown; siblings, Wynoka Dillon, Dreama (Bill) Brown and James (Dawn) Fergu-son, all of Indiana, Kathy (Lance) Proper of Kill-buck, and Treasa Mottle and Rick Ferguson both of Millersburg; numer-ous nieces and nephews; and her former husband, Blaine Miller. She also had many adopted chil-dren that claimed her as “Mama”, “her Angel”, Angela J. (David) Crist of Millersburg, Robyn Cor-win of Mount Gilead, and the list goes on.

She was preceded in death by many loved ones, including her parents, stepparents, and siblings, Steven Dillon and Barb Bebe.

passed away Thursday, Aug. 6, 2015, follow-ing an extended illness at Wooster Community Hospital.

She was born Sept. 2, 1955, in Wooster to Rob-ert “Bob” and Gwendo-lyn “Gwen” (Neumann) Collian and married Ross Lilley June 1, 1985.

Surviving in addition to her husband are her parents, Bob and Gwen Collian; daughters Amber (Mike) Riddlebaugh of Mansfield and Erin Lilley of Wooster; stepdaughters April (Mike) Parks of Killbuck and Crystal Lilley (Craig) Hunt of Wooster; and grandchildren Sierra and Peyton Parks and Nakeya and Maverick Hunt.

Tessa’s favorite pas-times were family, the beach, NASCAR and word games.

It was Tessa’s wishes there be no services.

Wayne Flinner, 87Wayne Flinner, 87,

of Berlin, passed away Thursday, July 30, 2015, after an extended illness.

He was born Sept. 7, 1927, in Berlin, the son of John and Ida (Hershberg-er) Flinner, and married Beverly Sutherland on July 3, 1949. She preceded him in death on May 3, 1982. He later married Maxine Miller on Aug. 14, 1983. She survives.

He was a veteran of the U.S. Army Air Force dur-ing World War II, serv-ing in the Philippines, and retired after working 40 years for Timken of Wooster.

He attended Millers-burg Baptist Church, and enjoyed fishing and loved playing and listening to music. He was a member of the Pop Farver Band, where he played guitar.

Surviving in addition to his wife, Maxine, are sons, Richard (Kim) Flin-ner, Randy (Jane) Flin-ner and Barry (Rebecca) Flinner, all of Millersburg;

a stepdaughter, Denise (Ron) Birt of West Union; six grandchildren; 12 great-grandchildren; and numerous step-grandchil-dren.

He was preceded in death by his parents; brothers, Darrell and Carl Flinner; sisters, Vera Lari-more and Grace Flinner; and a grandson, Barry Allen Jr.

Funeral services were Monday, Aug. 3, at Mill-ersburg Baptist Church, with Pastor Greg Lonsway officiating. Burial was in Berlin Cemetery. Military rites were conducted by the Killbuck VFW.

talked about having our dream studio together,” Schlabach said. “She got married in June and need-ed a place for her studio. We started looking and this building came up and it was a perfect fit for us. It gave her the studio space she needed, and it was per-fect for what I’m doing.”

One month and 28 gal-lons of paint later, the shop was open.

“We share the same mis-sion which is empowering women,” Schlabach said. “We help women feel beautiful. So many women believe the lies, like they are defined by their size, and they don’t believe in

themselves.“We’re doing Studio 65

workshops here, with class-es on social media classes and photography classes, and a class on how to start your own business,” she continued. “We’ve gotten a lot of inspiration and support from the commu-nity. People are real excit-ed to find a shop like this in downtown Millersburg.”

The shop celebrated an open house on Thursday, July 2, with more than 200 people pouring in from all over.

“I’m always just so amazed that people are willing to drive two hours to get here to find us,” Schlabach said. “We have a good following on social media and they come for the shop. I get so excited by that. I have a big fol-lowing on Instagram, and everywhere we go I get people coming up and asking if we’re Farmhouse Frocks.”

On Monday, Aug. 17, the village of Millers-burg is blocking off the alley behind the store and Farmhouse Frocks and Lyssa Ann Photography

are teaming with down-town spas to host “Rock the Frock” a fashion show featuring clothes from the store and hair and make-up from the spas.

“We’re going to have a runway show in the back alley here,” Schlabach said. “Tickets are $20 and can be ordered online or at the store, or Studio 1876, at Millersburg Salon or at Old World Bakery in Berlin. They’re going to be serving appetizers here that night.”

There is a limited num-ber of tickets, and tickets will also entitle guests to 20 percent off at the store the night of the show.

There will also be live music in the courtyard at the Hotel Millersburg.

“It should be fun,” she added. “We’re going to string lights in the back alley and have models show how they can pair up our clothes and outfits. Also, our new fall line will be premiered that night.”

Dr. D.J. McFadden will see patients at the cen-ter Mondays, 1-4:30 p.m., and Wednesdays, 8 a.m.-noon.

“We felt it was time to re-enter the Mount Hope area. There is a need for family care services in town, and we consider ourselves for-tunate to have a facil-ity available to run our practice out of,” McFad-
